- HODINKEE Radio presents The Collector’s Edition hosted by founder Ben Clymer. This series provides listeners with an inside look at the art of collecting and what it means to be an enthusiast. The conversation will cover watches, of course. But it won't stop there. For this episode, we are thrilled to sit down with comedian, actor, producer, and serial entrepreneur Kevin Hart.
If it seems like Hart is everywhere all the time, that's because he is - from the current "Reality Check" stand-up tour and the big screen in hits like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Secret Life of Pets to television ads for the likes of DraftKings and JPMorgan Chase. On top of that, he also runs a media company called HartBeat Productions. And on top of that - and what brings us here today - he's also a legit watch enthusiast.

@@jimbojimbo6873 Agreed but having conversations with interesting people about watches is something he seems to enjoy. To a lot of old Hondinkee fans he is still the face of the company and if you read the comments, most of those fans are not too keen on the new corporate approach.
Sometimes it feels like a lot of celebrities are just anointed with watch knowledge from day one but it's refreshing to see that Kevin came into the hobby the same we all did, just by being interested in time and had the same journey as us. Start off with fashion watches, get some 'well known' pieces, get burned on vintage and eventually figure out what works for us in our day-to-day. For one of the world's best known collectors, that was brilliant to hear.
Ben is absolutely brilliant at these interviews too. Hopefully this lends itself to more of these and we can get Mark Wahlberg, Jackie Chan and Corey Gamble on with their full collections.

"Annointed with watch knowledge from day one." What? It's either you care about it enough to learn it or you don't get it at all. No one comes out just knowing about all watches. Plus, a lot of people nowadays are only into watches because they believe it is the "it" thing to do.
I remember going to a hodinkee meet-up where all that was there were watch nerds like myself. Men and women alike. I loved it! Ben used to bring in some of his personal pieces and talk about it with all of us. It was a great day and age. Now, it has become a circus. There are people in this watch game who don't even care about watches for the beauty of the timepieces. They just care about what they can sell it for. It's a scarier world. But, as the saying goes, "you just have to roll with the punches" and keep it going.

@@Kcseales I think they mean a lot of celebrities act like they got into watches knowing everything there is to know about collecting. Without telling the story about "learning" the watch collecting hobby.

Kevin seems like a nice guy. His take on watches is funny. "Nobody knew what watch I was wearing" is the basic thesis of why he gets into serious watches... completely opposite from most collectors who would tell you to buy what you like and buy for yourself instead of trying to fit into a club. Kevin is so big now he could probably make invicta cool to a group of people but he's still trying to fit in. Honestly interesting.
It's an interesting commentary on the watch world in general. Why is a watch desirable and how subjective that is.
Value and cost are two very different things.
@Richard Lloyd yes. Also on the idea of investments. I think that started as a way to justify these purchases to significant others and now seems to be the mantra of so many... I'd love if Kevin just said, "I'm rich and I like buying cool stuff"

Everybody into watches are trying to fit in (in my opinion). It is just a matter of what ballpark you are playing in. Some really high end watches may not be known by the average person (giving the illusion we do not care about fitting in) but at that point you are playing ball with the group who "when you know, you know" as Kevin said it.
This is spectacular! Always terrific to see Ben sharing his profound affinity for watches with his guests! The passion is utterly incredible and infectious!

Regardless of the fame and the money Kevin Hart is always so chilled, humble and funny. I love how he broke into a sketch and had to restrain himself. He really knows that tomorrow isn't promised and life is fragile.

Favourite part of the video is where we see the diverse group of watch friends. I also like that Kevin’s focus is on what the Watch means to him or why he got it rather than it’s value or the bling. Cool dude.
This two guys couldn't be any more different even if one of them was an extraterrestrial, yet they can get together, find common ground and bond around watches. And then people ask why do we love this hobby.
Appreciate the passion of Kevin and I think he's an humble guy. Need another episode with hands on his watches.

Respect to Kevin for being straight up honest. "I'm the AP spokesperson, which is awesome, but it's hard to not be able to wear other brands that I like too." Meanwhile, Floyd mayweather said, "Hublot is the greatest watch brand in the world..." So many "influencers" and artists just say things because they are paid to do so.
I wonder if AP is going to drop his pay now.
To be honest, I don't understand why anyone would care what Floyd Mayweather thinks about watch brands.

I don't know the exact ref, but, I noticed Kevin Hart was the first person I saw with the rose gold Daytona Cosmograph with black ceramic bezel and brown dial with the Arabic numerals. That was one of my favorites as the colors look so warm and rich and is unique for a Daytona.

I would really really love to see Jay Z on TW! He was collecting watches way before any other significant pop culture personalities were flashing them. I remember his Hublot phase, when he obsessed over AP, down to his blue sapphire RM. He never followed the pack and I bet he’s very well versed into the significance of the houses and references he selects. Ben - make it happen!

I got to meet him and size his Patek 5650G a few years back. He is a super nice and humble guys despite his monumental success...also the watch was incredible!

@@Roadglide86 very slowly because you had to cut sections off since it was a rubber strap. The guys with him joked about not cutting it too short and making it unwearable...definitely one of the more nerve-wracking things I've done in my career. 😂

Everyone nowadays always talks about collecting watches because of milestone purchases, but once in a while I would like to hear: hey I got that watch because I love the way it looks or the features.

It’s cool to hear about the high end stuff some times but these conversations often miss the more entry level of watches. The true mark of a collector in my mind in verity in styles and price levels. Maybe when we get to see his collection there will be some more variety.
