The Settlers 3 & The Settlers 4 is in my opinion the best in the franchise and I still play them to this day. Games aren't the same anymore, I miss this type of level of detail in those games. I recommend this to anyone who loves RTS games but with incredible details!

Bluebyte had made settlers 2 co-op split screen with dual mouses on the same machine! (I think it was Amiga 1200, dual mouses, one mouse per player, in all its co-op RTS goodness way ahead of it's time)

Weel, it DOES include The Settlers 1, but only the Windows version.
Settlers 1 was on PC since 1994. It roughly the same as the Amiga version thanks to SVGA. Only the music is different : it uses MIDI (which of course depends on your MIDI settings).

Settlers 5 was one of my first games. I have hectic nostalgia for it. Every music track brings a tear to the eye and it still looks so beautiful. The next one, six, was good too. Better. The heroes were nice since they drove a story and gave players something to focus on. An end goal. But they weren’t sandbox. If you want sandbox and organic stuff then ja maybe play something else. If you want solid story, play some 5 and 6. 7 looked weird so I never played it.
Mack, you made me buy S3. The only thing I hated.. was the resolution. I need the mods for 1920x1080 to see my legion flood a nation. It's a drug to see them ALL begin moving to the enemy. The frequency of sword clinging and settlies yelling is the gauge to tell how big/fun your game got... Thank you Mack.

Caesar 3 was a good game too. Watching people move into your village was way too satisfying
I enjoyed Caesar 4 too - Caesar 3 had a few too many bugs with worker movement and resource collection when trying to build the top cities, which was a pity.
Zeus: Master of Olympus was also great
I still Play Caesar 3 today 😁 have Always Loved it ❤️

I also like the settlers, but I was always more the Anno-player. Next year we have a new Anno and a new Settlers (both from Blue Byte Studio). Could be a fantastic year for city-building fans.

I have no hope for the next Settlers, because my favourite one is 4 and they're not going back to that style of gameplay again, it's pretty obvious that they believe it's too "slow" for 2019. I do have hopes for Anno though, because I LOVED 2205. I know hardcore Anno fans hate it because it seemed simplified, but if you go all out on the min-maxing I think it's actually the most complex Anno game to date and the only one to focus on that "huge macro-empire" feel, where one miscalculation can have a cascading effect on the entire world map. They need to find a place for their RTS combat though, because right now they seem to not know what to do with it. They also need to fire that fucking asshole who keeps putting pixel hunting quests in the Anno games.
@@Carnagath82 From what I've heard the new Settlers is going to be a mix between Settlers 3 and 7, with a stronger focus on "product circulation". Meaning marketplaces will be very important. This doesn't sound that bad, but we have to wait and see. I agree that Anno always struggled with the RTS-combat, since it is not the focus of the game.

Mac why dont you do som,e of Anno series? They from Blue byte, they are management strategies, they are great. You will love them for sure
Anno 1800 can't be released fast enough, hope it will be close to 1404
I play 1404 like once a month. The progression in that game is so fantastic.
If he does it, he should try to reinstall anno 2070 with the DLC purchased. You literally cannot play it with the expansion pack without getting a community installer hotfix because Blue Byte were that incompetent with it.
Anno 1602 was so great. I remember playing it as a kid, having no clue about strategy and strategy games, learning very slowly by doing it over and over again.
Then 1503 came out and played weirdly on my old PC, that was a downer, I'm still unable to forgive the game for that.
2070 was brilliant. The other stuff... meh.

I picked this up the other day as a newcomer to the series and so far I am enjoying 6. The seasonal weather effects in it are done quite well.
Settlers 4 also had an interesting system where early aggression was difficult because your army was weaker outside your own borders. You could build monuments to boost your armies attack, and building enough monuments, requiring a significant investment of gold, you did have a significant attacker's advantage. On difficult maps fending off the AI's big wave attacks was challenging, but with a big enough army you could finally go and take revenge and finish the level. The map designs difficulty progression was also nicely done.
As a kid Settlers 4 was really complex and difficult, and playing it again as an adult understanding the mechanics way better it was just a pure delight.

Speaking of Settlers II, have you tried out Settlers II 10th Anniversary Edition? It completely reworks the graphics but keeps the mechanics. Anyone played this version? What did you think of it?
I have on CD, but can get it to run on windows 10. it worked on windows 8 fine.
It was a really good remake. But there were a lot of problems with the game, a lot of bugs.
Frags of War I only play that one with the custom maps. I spent hours and days playing that one.
Hey Mack. If you have tried the multiplayer in this series, do you recommend it as the draw of the game or for the solo play?

- The Settlers: Rise of Cultures (2008)
All of these 3 games are remakes of The Settlers 2. They moved to 3D. You had tutorial-text on the screen, some quality of life improvements. If you had to place them in the rankings, then definitely higher then Settlers 5/6/7.
I was talking about battle isle the other day and my mate didn't have a clue! I loved that game!
My most favorite one was Settlers 5, because of the nice storytelling that added some depth to the game, but you are right with the argument that it felt a lot different then the previous games.
Settlers 3 was great but Settlers 6 is definitely my favourite due to its mechanics (that differ from the previous games). It also aged very, very well.
@Sebastian Montoya I'd recommend the Cultures series (Northland etc.) over Settlers 3, as it has more interesting and deeper aspects if you're craving for something more time consuming than let's say Settlers 6. You can get any of these games on gog.com with no DRM.

I purchased 1 and 2 separately, when i was younger i played 1 on Amiga and loved it. I can pick the 4-5 little things that are different but its nice the save game feature works everytime these days hahaha
I had Settlers on Amiga \o/ best game ever and I'm with you Mack (as always) like most games .. game these days loose what makes games good.. #BringBackTheGoodOldGames
Settlers 5 and 6 have seasons though which is super comfy storing up for winter. I also liked the region system which added a bit of extra strategy to the combat.

Just found your channel today by searching a video of Maelstorm. Then watched the Atlas vid, now this one. I really enjoy the way you make your videos and as of now I love your opinions! Especially on this one. Settlers 3 was like my first real computer game and I even just had the demo. I played the shit out of the demo as kid but for me they killed the game with the newer games.

I use to love the gold system where you didn't just use gold to buy troops but instead used it to improve your troops. I loved Settlers 3, it was amazing fun.

I can see your reasoning for picking this as the best settlement management game, but mine has always been stronghold 2! I wouldn't be surprised if you already played it but I haven't seen you review any of the games in the series. If you are looking to review some more rts/settlement management games I highly recommend making a video about stronghold 2 and stronghold crusader (those are my favs) and stronghold 1 and maybe crusader extreme as additional videos. Don't review stronghold 3 or crusader 2 they were just wasted potential....
also you mentioned it in this video but maybe a age of empires 2 hd review? It has a very active community that is constantly growing.

great review. i have fond memories of playing settlers 1 on my amiga 500 and settlers 3, which i also think is the best game of the entire series, on my first windows PC in 1998. great that it's coming back including multiplayer. might even buy it, altho I don't really have the time for 5 hour long base building games.
Settlers 2 was one of the first PC games I ever played and I fell in love with it. I wrote Bluebyte expressing my enthrallment with their product and also made recommendations. I told them it would be neat if you could place archers in the towers amongst, expand upon the combat, and several others I cannot remember. I received a letter back in response where they thanked me for my compliments, my patronage, as well as the ideas I shared. Certainly a standup company indeed! Sure enough, when Settlers 3 was released, you were actually able to place archers in towers. Now, I don't think my letter had any impact on their design, but it was really cool thinking I may have had a role to play in that final result.

The most amazing game, i recall with joy all the hours i spent with it during childhood and after.
For me settlers 2 was the best, I loved the road system. Settlers 3 was prettier but I just personally loved the road system. But I am totally with you, this type of game the settlers has been king forever, nothing has ever fulfilled my Settlers itch, I really loved Settlers 2. I did try the Settlers 2 online edition Uplay put out but it's just shit. There are features missing and it doesn't feel right.

Thanks for creating a great review (Love your description of Windows 10!!) The Settlers was THE game that I played to death, the 1st Settlers, Civ and Sim City were the games I played over and over. As time has progressed the franchises have become all flash and no substance :o( they look stunning but thats it. Gaming has devolved rapidly and is heading for extinction.... Once the Dinosaurs like EA and their ilk have died out the little Indie mice will have their day and we will see a return to games that are GAMES again :0)
I was playing Settlers 2 & 3 back then and then, after some years I bought 7. And man, I was so disappointed... Would be great if Settlers 8 would get back to the 1,2,3 philosophy, but, I have not much hope that this is going to happen.

I used to love the Settlers III demo (lol) and I ended up buying Settlers IV... and I've just found out that these History Editions exist and I am SO HAPPY!!!
I've never played any Settlers games but I played a lot of Pharaoh back in the day and this game sounds very similar. It was a fun game but it got too repetitive (every mission you had to do the exact same 100 steps to build all the different pieces your city needed). Anyone know how the Settlers games compare?
Its a strategic game so its all about a balance in the buildings you make. If you know the right order it stays the same, this is in all strategic games. If you don't like to build your economic and just want great strategic battles settlers is not your game. Settles3 especial is about the build up and the aesthetics its a relaxing playful game.
@@angryguineapig4323 Actually i would say settlers is more of a resource management city builder type of RTS. Like you said, you needed to have a certain order of wich building to put down, this was almost always the same patern. If you didn't do this your economy would become a mess.
Settlers 2 is the beast but it is weird look at it now because the graphic felt so much better back then-

I love Settlers 5 for multiplayer because of all the different units. We did fun things like one player playing regularly versus three players only fighting with settlers.

When was 16ish, I used to wake up at 5 am, ride the bus for an hour to go to my Mom's office to play Settlers 2 for 45 minutes and then I had to take the bus back home so I would be on time for school. When I saw the S2 footage...the memories hit me right in the feels. Thanks for this man, you just made Ubisoft some money.

Seems like you cant settle on a version of settlers. Love videos where you can just feel the posters passion come through. We all have our favorite titles. Mack seems to love his settlers.
Northland/Cultures takes it a slightly different direction and has more management. Individual characters gained skills, and you had to couple them to get more people.
Similar to Settlers 3 and 4.

Settlers 2 also had a 2 player hotseat mode on PC using its own internal mouse driver. Took some fiddling but my brother and I got it to work. Mind blowing at the time xD

The animatioms in K&M are so good! Pigs grow fat, weat and grapes grow on fields and sounds of it all are great as well! Playing it right now and it's fantastic. AI is almost nonexistent, but I still want to play it, so immersive

Haha I remember my first time trying to play Set 3 I was so confused and did not know what the bloody heck I was doing but I remember loving the look of the game and I have always loved building type of games. Think that came from WC1 and building up my base but then seeing this having an actual economy I wanted to try it. Sadly I think I was too young to really get the game play, Now since I never really got to enjoy the game I never really bothered with 4-6 but then 7 came out and I had loads of fun, and I was happy to see they were making a new one while I agree with you that 7's combat was really shallow and boring I loved the theme and look of the game and I am glad they went with the same style for 8. I for one am hoping for the best!!
Big fan of 5 as it was the first game I ever bought from PC world on disk. Loved how the troops would be in squads led by leaders. The heroes didn't play many factors into the game and weren't anything groundbreaking at all, just added more content. Much more of a fan of the graphics change in 5 as well but this is probably because I played this first. Overall I enjoy all of them and hope the new one isn't a step back like most series of games.

Mac, did you ever play Gangsters: Organized Crime? It's on GOG but sadly doesn't work on Windows 10. You would absolutly love it. It's a little hard to understand at first but the combination of planning phase and RTS and the depth in the city and your organisation is amazing! Please can you give it a review and maybe put some pressure to have that made to be compatible with Windows 10? Or even better if they do a remastered version. I would pay £60 for it easy

great series of games. I was wondering if you ever played the Impression Arts city builders (i.e.) Pharaoh, Zeus and Emperor? They were classic city builders for their time and Zeus stands as the arguable best of the three.
S3 and S4 were great. Loved them! S6 was great too but had more focus on city building gameplay than previous and later titles. Which is not bad, just a different kind of game.

The settlers III and the expantions was the very first game i ever bought...I'm in love with this game..I still have the cd's for win98,me,2k and i;m still playing them in dell laptop with pII 300mhz 256 ram and 2mb graphic card...lol!!!!!

Wow for sure ! ...Me as a kid...hours and hours of Settlers 2. And as you said, it's quite complex. Especially as a kid. And it's pretty harmless as a game for kids tbh. Sure there's war. But there's also ppl blowing bubbles and falling asleep with a paper waiting for their goods to be done. ...Anyway, I ended up with Shogun TW and stuff when that came out. I'll always have a soft spot for Settlers, that's for sure !

I played alot of Settlers 3 back in the days. But my computer at home couldent handle it so i did go to a neighbour 2 house away to play it. Pretty crasy that they let me come there and play on their computer when they was home.
