STORYLINE:
The Greek Cypriot president crossed the Green Line that splits the island for the first time on Wednesday amid growing hopes that a diplomatic breakthrough this week could herald an end to a 27-year dispute.
A journey of just a few kilometers across the divided city of Nicosia brought Glafcos Clerides for dinner at the residence of Rauf Denktash, leader of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot republic.
Neither leader spoke to journalists before or after the dinner, which lasted two and a half hours.
The invitation was issued on Tuesday when the two leaders met face-to-face for the first time in four years.
The UN's envoy to Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, also attended the dinner.
De Soto was greeted by Olgun el Gun, political adviser to Denktash.
Minutes later Denktash himself welcomed Clerides.
Greek Cypriot opposition parties and refugee associations criticized Clerides for making the visit while the refugees cannot return to their homes in the north.
They charged that the visit could be interpreted as a move toward recognition of the breakaway state.
Clerides told reporters before crossing that he was visiting the north not as the president of Cyprus but as the leader of the Greek Cypriot community.
At Tuesday's meeting, the two leaders agreed to launch a new round of face-to-face talks on the island's reunification, starting next month.
They also promised to negotiate until a comprehensive settlement is reached.
Denktash had previously insisted he wouldn't negotiate directly with Clerides without international recognition of his breakaway state.
The search for a solution on Cyprus has gained urgency with the application by the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government to join the EU.
If the EU approves - it is expected to do so as early as next year - then Turkey has warned it could annex the north, a move analysts say would be a fatal blow to Turkey's own hopes of joining the 15-member union.
Turkey, Greece, the EU and the United Nations have all expressed hopes that the new talks will lead to a settlement on an island divided since Turkey invaded in 1974, following a short-lived coup by supporters of union with Greece.
Denktash has accepted an invitation to dine with Clerides in the Greek Cypriot south later this month.
It will be his first trip there.
