I wouldn't recommend getting a 4 year degree to be a cop. Get a degree after you are hired. But yes, that would really suck to put all that effort in and fail the polygraph.

I did a paper on the polugraph for my undergrad degree. Here is my theory; The polygraph is not a lie detector but a stress evaluation. Getting people to confess to lies is an added bonus. I think the true purpose is to test how you handle the stress of being interrogated in the same manner a defense attorney is going to interrogate you on a witness stand.
@Alfonso Garcia about getting people to confess. Not about it being an interview for court performance. Noone would dare say it is true because there is no real way to prove it. Thus, it is theory.
It's true. I've been interrogated before. They didn't get anything out of me. Later on I took a polygraph and went in with the same "you're not going to break me" attitude and I passed the polygraph. Not only did I passed but I finished alot faster than some of the other testers
Thank God in the state of Michigan, polygraph test for hiring someone who applied for a job is illegal.. This should be illegal anywhere in the u.s. period
The test can measure heart rate, sweat/pores, breathing and muscle within the torso, feet and hip movement, it depends on how much they hook up to you. They test for inconsistency, sometimes they'll get in your head. The best thing to do is always remain calm and still, answer everything the same, and come clear minded, don't over think it. The poly is a test of confidence in my opinion. Even if you forget to tell small things like that pack of gum you stole when you were 10, if you truly believe in your answers and are confident in them, they'll answer the same.
I took several for LEO jobs in past. Passed them. Ever notice it's the last stage of the process, not the first? They want you to be invested and feel like you have something to lose. If they gave the poly first off you'd be relaxed and not care nearly as much if you passed or failed vs. after you've invested yourself in hours and hours of tests, medical exams, psychs, physical agility tests, paperwork, background etc etc. They want you to feel stress. Next, realize it's all just a game and an interview. Play the game, you'll pass. The game is to convince you the thing works. The game is to convince you they're experts. The game is to convince you they can tell if you're trying to cheat. The more you believe the test is legit the more you'll be afraid of it if you're lying. I agree with him, stay calm and never, ever admit to anything. He's right, they WILL play head games, the oldest trick is to scare you that you didn't pass a question to get you to confess to something. Even if you told the truth they'll try this trick. Why? Because it works, people are stupid and believe it and confess things. It's better to dq with them suspecting you're lying than leaving no doubt by confessing. The exam doesn't start when they hook up the machine. The exam starts the second you walk in the door and ends the second you walk out. The machine is a prop. They want you to believe the machine can perform magic. The meat and potatoes is the interview and the head games they play. Focus on your relationship with the examiner. Be pleasant and friendly and calm. They will try to make you feel like they're your new buddy. They're not but play along anyway. Be their buddy but don't go overboard and kiss ass. Just be friendly and calm, don't fall for the head games and you'll pass. I wish I had more free time on my hands, it would be fun to apply and take the poly and purposely lie to see if i could pass. I'm pretty sure I could.
....yeah, so true what you say, I had a PT a few months ago, the tester was super friendly with me b4 thet test, agreeing with me etc, smiling making me real relaxed, i thought it odd as I never met him b4. Anyway, when the test started, Q's rolling in, he became cold and even unfriendly towards me. This got me nervous, he was like ordering me around, “DON'T MOVE YOUR HEAD, BREATH CORRECTLY, KEEP EYES STRAIGHT AHEAD!!!“ He kinda yeld. I realized what he had done to me a few days later, I felt I had been tricked, I failed btw. I asked him how many years he'd been doing PT, said 10 years, meaning, he knows all the tricks in how to fail you. I honestly told the truth, no lie here.
Perfect example of the head games. Buddy buddy at first then they change their tone to shock you or throw you off guard. It's an appeal to people who don't want to anger or disappoint and like to "make things right" so they might confess things. Oh sorry I offended you, you're right I should have told you about that key of coke I sold last year. Or if you're not the remorseful type, at least just throw you off to see how you react. It's basically good cop bad cop routine all in one person. If you told the truth and failed, demand a new test, knowing what to watch out for. Don't under react when you get accused, don't over react. Just be like I'm surprised you think I'm being deceptive, I am telling the truth sir/mam. This is why I hate them, I passed both of mine but they do try to trick you. The whole thing is a ruse.
@@hifiandrew ....so very right you are, kinda scarred me for life knowing I was telling the truth, polygraph testing should never be a fact in court, I can confidently say this because of my situation with it, even if I passed I would still say what I'm saying now, because of the other comments and viewing videos on PT I have read and saw about it being unreliable.

Ieat utube it depends on the applicant, my friend was further ahead of me in the process meaning he completed his interview 2 months before i had mine, for the polygraph they called me back to schedule it in 7 days and even now my friend is still waiting to get an appointment to take the polygraph so it’s all different between applicants

polygraph test should be outlawed. you have people who lie and pass them and people who tell the truth and fail them. every human is different and emotions are different. iv'e had a few in my life and one of the testers told me i was not truthful of my name. wtf... my name has been the same since i was born. asked did i ever steal anything? being a truthful person, i thought of everything i stole in my life. i don't care if its a rubber band or car, its still stealing. other people can lie their asses off and pass. what a joke.some people future is dependent on this crap.

Lol i got kicked out of JSO, I was trying to b CSO... I was truthfully written everything in the questionnaire and first they call every name but not me and later someone told me to go. I’m like what, they won’t tell me why. So I think being honest is a crap.

Reading between the lines I think I understand what you’re saying. Tell the truth and don’t waiver. Anyone who folds under the minute pressure of another man asking them a question in a safe environment doesn’t have the gall to deal w criminals.
I remember my first poly with the State Troopers. I sat there saying everything with honesty as I did with in my application for 2 hours (tons and tons of paper repeating the same thing over and over) and everything went smoothly even tho I was kinda nervous because I never had one before, now Im nervous again because Im taking it for another agency all over again. Guys, he is telling you the truth, just be truthful at the application and you will be fine in the poly.
Same thing happend to me. Just recently took one for my agency I’m getting into and I was so nervous during the whole deal it kept getting a bad reading cause I couldn’t relax. Even though I was being honest everything that I was saying, it kept coming up that I was lying. After watching this and seeing some of the comments I feel a lot better on who to do this now. It was also my first time doing that ever.
“Did you lie, omit or falsify any information on your background packet?” This question supposedly caused the polygraph machine to spike on all 3 rounds of the same line of questions and now I can’t reapply for another year to the biggest department in my state who is hurting for officers(Phx, AZ). The only thing questionable in my background is my Other Than Honorable Discharge(which is not an automatic DQ)from the Navy Reserves in 2009(10 years ago, agencies typically frown upon drug use within 3-7 years). I had experimented with marijuana at a Halloween party on a Friday night prior to my drill weekend and that following Sunday while at drill, I freaked out because I was scared so I admitted to smoking. I was young, drunk, and I thought I was cool which wasn’t the case because I ended up getting discharged. Fast forward to now, I still have a clean record, no felonies no misdemeanors. Never been arrested or booked. Scored 200 points above passing score on the fitness test and an 80% on the written. This is such a hard pill to swallow because I know how much I have to offer.
Cool video!!! George makes a good point , you are Your Own Worst Enemy when you take this test , tell the truth , and don't needlessly stress yourself out prior to taking this test . Years ago in my youth I applied for a major law enforcement agency. I had to take a polygraph test and even though I answered all pre interview questions as truthfully as I could the whole process of being hooked up to a machine psyched me out and made me nervous. Needless to say the results of my polygraph test were inconclusive according to the tester. A few days later I received a disqualification notice for theft issues. The issue was that I took a handful of disposable gloves from my past employer and use them for personal use but I do believe that it was because the test was not a full pass. The moral of the story is that if you are telling the truth reaffirm that in your mind and realize that the polygraph test is nothing to be stressed over if you told the truth. Like others have said, they passed it telling flat-out lies While others have failed it telling the truth and being as nervous as hell. Don't let your fears of this machine cause you to wrongfully fail or in my case get an inconclusive result which is probably the same as failing to some agencies. Looking up all these little tricks to help you pass when you're telling the truth in the first place will just make things worse for you. If you didn't do anything heinous in the past just tell them the truth and relax when you take the polygraph test. You are at the mercy of the guy conducting the test. In my case the interviewer conducting the test tried to stress me out even more by saying," you better not be lying because if you do the little needle will go up and down and tell me the truth, so is there anything you have to tell me?" I simply replied to him," well, you'll see I'm telling the truth when the little needle doesn't move, right?" The polygraph interviewer found a little bit of humor in that and I proceeded to get an inconclusive on the test. At the end of the day if the agency you apply for gets a guy who's not very good at conducting the test and that's the reason why you failed wrongfully, then you should just brush it off and think to yourself that the agency who disqualified you is not worthy of you and you'll eventually find one that is. Needless to say, I got disqualified for a petty theft issue when earlier that week I had found a wallet with over $1,000 in cash and returned it to the owner. I never had a chance to exposed that good deed on my pre-interview test. Remember that people of good moral character get disqualified for some reason or the other every single day so don't let it get you down, go take the test for another department who deserves Someone Like You.
I've taken 2 polygraphs for 2 different departments. My first one was like 5 hours of getting screamed at saying I was a criminal, this and that. Really made me feel like I was lying when I wasn't, it's all a tactic to get you to admit to things. That same week I took another department and was told on the spot I passed it. I passed both at the end. Best tip I can give is TELL THE TRUTH on your Background packet. Is better for you to put that you did drugs, etc. on paper rather than them asking you the question while being hooked up to the machine and see that you're lying when you said you never did drugs. Is better to be honest than get caught lying is my best advice.
This is the best secret. Be honest! They do not expect you to be perfect but they do expect you to own anything that have done that you are proud off if you ever did.
The problem with the polygraph is that the examiner is too often the deciding factor. There are instances where an examiner harasses or intimidates examinees to get them to divulge information, even though the charts don't indicate deception. This is over the line. These aren't criminals, these are job applicants. When it comes to job applicants, everything should be set up for candidate success. Some tactics should be completely off the table. If the polygraph is that good at getting the truth out of people, then they shouldn't need to resort to shady tactics against a person who just wants a job.
Failed my cbp poly.. I was 100 percent honest the examiner was discriminating me because I live in a border town. I disclosed the same info that I put on my application he was a real jerk. I never switched my story up and he straight up told me if I didn’t admit to something he was going to fail me cause I lived in a border town and I had to be involved in something. I told him to do what he had to do because I’m not involved in anything & sure enough he failed me. Polys are a joke. My brother took one and he passed it said it was 10-15 min long. Mine lasted from 8am-4pm. And the whole time he told me I was failing made me not even want to be there. Horrible experience. Will try one more time now that I know what to expect.

I was discharged (general under honorable conditions) from the army for pissing positive for cocaine. When interrogated by CID, I told them the truth that I do not remember taking anything and also advised them that I was sexually assaulted by another soldier who was encouraging me to drink and party with him. My Platoon Sergeant told me not to say anything as I wasn’t penetrated. My army appointed legal counsel advised me I may have been poisoned and my abuser’s roommate also tested positive when I did indicating it was more likely for poisoning. Regardless I was discharged after being found guilty of wrongful use either knowingly or otherwise it didn’t matter. Would I still be able to work for most law enforcement agencies? When I was transitioning out of the army I was solicited by border patrol but my conditions of discharge require a 2 year hiatus before I can work there.
Law N' Smoke why do they? I was totally honest with mine but was told I stole from an employer, which I never did in my life, I've always been the straight and narrow individual even as a child. The examiner later told me he believes I was telling the truth🤔 After the fact though. Oh well, gonna try with a different Department.
As a recruiter for the USMS I initially did not like being sent to high schools as I thought my time better spent talking to college students. I realized though that a lot of the college students had already made decisions that negatively affected their ability to get hired (drug use, minor criminal charges, poor driving records, bad credit). I started going to the high schools a lot more and telling them that they needed to start walking the line right then and there.
While this is true. It's also a consequence of the failure of law enforcement agencies. As they're either hiring someone with no life experience and who don't know themselves and are destined to make terrible mistakes in the future. Or people who only have ever done everything they've been told in their lives and don't know any better from the truth. Law Enforcement is struggling today hiring people because the hiring process is not based on truth and based on reality. Just what you look like on paper. And the world is suffering because of that.

I literally just turned my background paperwork into TPD last week. And now I’m waiting to do everything else in the hiring process. Small small world we live in.
I was doing very well with a local county but got kicked for failing the poly. The interviewer was pretty aggressive and said I was lying on sex crimes. I've never done anything on the list she gave me. Blew my mind. I passed the polygraph for a different department. No idea what was wrong with the first operator. Wish I saw your video earlier, I would have requested another operator.
Thanks for the help. I’ve never gotten in trouble with the law, I’ve tried weed once in high school, no other drug use/anything that would disqualify me.but I think the examiner may think I’m lying or something. I have a polygraph with cbp coming up soon, and they fail about 70% of applicants. It’s hard to believe that 7 out of 10 people who apply for cbp aren’t good enough people to be law enforcement officers. Polygraph is a joke

I recently applied for a Police Officer Recruit position/academy sponsored with my city’s police department and so far I’ve passed the application screening, the telephone interview, and now my physical ability test is next. Upon completion of that test, I’ll move onto the written test and oral board interview. I must say, the process already seems thorough. In my city, our police department doesn’t have people take a polygraph, we have people take the CVSA test, which isn’t as complicated. I guess they just clip a microphone on your shirt and begin asking you questions from your job application. I have moderate anxiety, and any time I’m doing something new or experiencing some sort of change, I’m always nervous. My wedding day, I was nervous. The day my daughter was born, I was nervous, high school graduation, I was nervous. But watching police recruit videos makes me feel a little better.
@@2k18SRTHELLCAT Some cities offer a sponsorship through their police departments. Usually there’s recruitments once or twice a year for either a fall or spring academy. Just look on your city’s employment page and the job title will either say “recruit/academy sponsored,” or “cadet/academy sponsored.”
thank you for video, i'm looking up everything i need to be ready for to become a LEO, first i will be a volunteer officer and try to go to school for my associates psychology for when i become a sworn LEO i can use it on the field and have a chance for promotions... i dont care if i dont get paid for being a volunteer and get shot in the line of duty i would have died doing what i always truly wanted to do. i think the process for me will be easy because being truthful from the first day you put your application is the key to passing it. no matter what the truth will set you free at a 2nd chance at a new life because its a lifestyle not just a job.
I just recently was DQ’d for a year because the examiner believed I was withholding information about drug use. I can tell u certainly this guy is right. If u are telling the truth u have nothing to worry about just stick to ur guns. What happened to me was I was unsure of the amount of times I’ve smoke marijuana in high school, he asked me why it looked like I was being deceptive. I told him it’s hard to give a truthful answer to a question u don’t honestly know the answer to. now that I am here in the chair I am worried it may have been more that I put on the application. It was that simple and I have to wait until next year to apply again. Honestly the test was a load of horse shit and the guy giving me the test was attempting to put words in my mouth, a part of his job, and trying to get me to say I’ve used more drugs and that I’m a habitual pot smoker. None of that is true. These guys are to forensics as what witch doctors are to medicine. It’s discouraging but u have to learn and move on. Just stick to ur guns and u will be fine.
It is the only logical reason so many people with, seemingly, spotless backgrounds would claim they pass and fail these exams at inconsistent rates. I am willing to bet they do not maintain their composure when accused of lying by the investigator. Even if you are telling the truth, your reaction to being called a liar and having your reputatiin and integrity questioned could cause a jury to doubt your testimony.

Thank you! This was super helpful. I applied to the Pima County Sheriffs office on Thursday and got my background email today. I was a stupid kid growing up but I'm gonna just lay it all out there and let the chips fall where they may. Honesty is the best policy.
My first polygraph came back as “no opinion”. Got my second on this week and hoping I pass. I figure if police departments are insisting you take a polygraph they should skip the psych exam and make you take a personality test using phrenology, or a traditional Chinese medicine doctor for my physical. It’s about as scientific and accurate as those things.
If you are a sociopath or a psychopath its very easy to beat a polygraph. You just have to make yourself truly believe your lie is reality. Those who are cold and dont feel.empathy or are numb from years of suppressing emotions can lie to your face without blinking an eye.
the thing is, ive done something thats messed up. i dont know if thats an instant DQ if i fess up. should i fess up before the exam and let them know wat i did? one is that i impersonated a cop by getting a blue/red lights and run a red light. (3am, no traffic) the other 2 are really messed up.
@@BP-vr3rt messed up shit lol one of them happened on accident. really dont wanna say. but i spoke with 3 officers in my town and pretty much told me, it happened a long time ago, never did it again, not to worry to much, ive never been arrested so more likely im good. they laughed wen i told impersonated. told me not to worry, its more serious wen u tell others ur a cop in a fake uniform and trying to pull cars over. i never did those things, just ran a red light w/ blue n reds and was never caught cuz no one saw me. yes its still impersonation of a public servant but it happened a long time ago, i passed the Statue of limitation of 7 years (in Texas). so they cant charge me.
Thank you. I don't want people to lie. Lies have a tendency to catch up with you. But polygraphs are so stressful it is easy to get a false positive and I want as many qualified people as possible to get hired.
So if you have had a rocky past and have overcome, what do you do? If you’re completely honest about an unfavorable past but you tell the truth do you still have a chance?
Fine video of useful information. Polygraphs are a part of more government employment processes that most people think. In some agencies, they are part of a review process that determines if you keep your job or not. I have taken more of them than I can remember and what you say about the skills of an individual examiner is so true. Even the examiner's attitude about what the purpose of their job is can make a difference. I've known people whose reaction to taking a polygraph makes it impossible to get any meaningful results. The accuracy of a polygraph is debatable at best and the depictions of how polygraph are given and used ranges from inaccurate to hysterically unbelievable. Still, they are a fact of life for the time being. Yours is great advice - be honest and tell the truth up front. Quite often a transgression is viewed as far less of a problem than an attempt to hide it. Be well - peace
The only secret is to be honest. Before the test make sure you eat and drink. Do not necessarily picture the question but just stay focused and let your body answer. It is really stressful but don’t try to control your emotions and feelings express them and when it’s time to answer once again tell the truth . If you ever see the question like an accusation your emotions are going to take over and that could affect the results badly… for exemple if you have cheated in the past just be honest and assume it even if you shouldn’t be proud of it
Ten years ago during an argument, my spouse tried to forcefully remove our baby daughter while I was holding her. I felt she was endangering our daughter and my natural reaction was to slap her face with my one free hand (the other one holding the baby). I didn't even think about the ramifications. Pure reaction, that I have since regretted and have never repeated since. Police were not called, and there were no charges. But I admitted to this before the polygraph. The polygrapher took this information to the CPT in charge, and the determination was that I did not meet their hiring standards. I was disqualified and permanently barred from future employment. This happened today. Domestic violence with this department and others is only listed as automatically disqualifying if there is a conviction, which in this case there certainly was not. It was my own admission. My question is if I can expect similar outcomes with other departments I've applied with and if I have any recourse to an appeal of their decision. If I'm wasting my time going forward in my LEO career pursuit, I'd certainly like to know because the time away from work is a financial strain and could also result in termination at my present job. Any comments and feedback are appreciated.
@@ProfessorWalker yes, I have. Thank you. I spoke with a friend who is a retired sheriff's deputy, and he told me this dept is notoriously stringent in their hiring standards. I'll keep pushing.
@@ProfessorWalker so if someone does a lateral and gets refused, can they usually go back to their old department? If not, seems like a risk. If you're a questionable hire maybe you just want to stay at the department that was willing to hire you?
The polygraph examination is undoubtedly bunk psueodoscience and totally falls down to the interpretations of individuals. They have been peer tested out the wazoo and found to be totally unreliable. In fact, if it wasn't for police agencies being strangely reliant on them, they'd be totally gone from public use and become the historic relics they deserve to be.

Hey @Professor Walker! I did my Polygraph yesterday and fully disclosed everything on my PHS, Polygraph Questionnaire and Polygraph interview about my prior drug use, work history, etc... I met with the examiner and we hit it off. Things went extremely well and I felt comfortable enough to take the polygraph. The test took about 3-4 hours and the examiner said that I was inconclusive on one part(Harm to persons) and failed the second part(drug usage). I was and have been completely honest and only experimented with marijuana 2x in 2008 and that was all, which I disclosed to everyone and anyone that’s asked me. Then the examiner said things like “I hope the department gives you a second chance”, “You’re a great candidate and I can tell you’re an honest person”, “Is there anything else you’re hiding?” Basically trying to get a confession out of me even though I don’t have anything else to confess. Is this just a scare tactic to try and get me to confess to something? I was 110% honest and am unsure why I failed the test. I was extremely nervous just seeing the machine not to mention actually taking the darn thing. If he says I failed does that mean I’m DQed from the process or is he just playing games with me?
@@rcramirez7852 I did get hired. Be honest with yourself and know that anything you say to that department can’t be any worse than what they’ve heard already from other candidates. They say honesty is the best policy and I believe in that 100%.

Im currently applying for the sheriffs office ( im 22 years old) I have to do a polygraph soon. I have no bad record im basically clean and im really committed and want the job but im no angel. I done 2 small bad things i did last year. I never got caught doing. I only done them 1 or 2 times in my life time. And i regret doing them as i am more mature now.Im taking this serious and want to make my family proud and help people in my community. But im nervous bc of these 2 things DQ me. Wish me luck.
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Just be transparent, police agencies look for integrity and a good moral compass. They understand that not everyone is perfect. Good luck to you all that are making the journey towards the badge.

My question I have for you sir is do they ask you about past employment? I can't remember if I put every job on the application and don't want to seem that I was trying to hide it. Ms Mrs Mr(Other) Staples, Smaller cities can't afford to self insure(both liability, and workers comp), so an insurance salesman can then DICTATE what may be asked of a new hire. Including making the polygraph mandatory. It makes no sense, but we aren't insurance adjusters, and there is never a lack of attorneys to file liability law suits. This is the reason behind stopping police chases, the infractions don't justify the potential loss of life and property. The areas that can afford to self insure, then follow in lock step the decisions of the liability insurance companies(ie polygraphs etc). It stinks, but this is the reality of city policing today, limit liability.
I wish I had seen this video before, I did a retest last month and fail, because I gave underbthe pressure and started thinking that maybe I need smoke more that what I already had told him, maybe It was 10 times but each time I took a hit out of 2 different Joints of Marijuana ext. Said that I smoked more times that what I new I did, He was so persuasive and told me he wanted to help me pass but that I needed to admit something that Was a lie itself. This was after he disconnected me from the machine, told me to sit down at a different seat, post test, and started to acuse me like a criminal and he got me good. He told me that the drug question was bothering me that I was reacting to it, after telling him like 5 time that I was telling the truth at the end I was so mentally drained that I told him what he wanted to hear. End of story, lost my future career After 2 years on the hiring process.
That same examiner will lie to a suspect on his results in order to get a confession because they perceive you guilty its Bull shit A dam lair giving some1 a polygraph it goes further cops can lie and make up stories trying to get a suspect to admit some wrong and it's these folks giving the Lie detector test. I like good non lying cops I don't like the lair cops
It's deemed a high risk or dangerous job, having a heart condition is something a department can't really work with... they can work with stuff like ADD or other disorders that don't make you that much of a liability.
The polygraph is the whole reason why the Steve Wilkos show is soo successful.. I mean what if some of these people were actually telling the truth but the polygraph says otherwise.
I took one last week fully passed it except for one question I did a retake and failed the ones I passed, it’s truly a nerve stressful process and I was honest with my investigator so honest it was uncomfortable
If you get disqualified for lying through one agency, does that mean no other agency will hire you? Also, do agencies communicate between each other to talk about your disqualification from previous agency??
@@gunnyjwells1977 From a Marine corporal to a gunny, I would expect nothing less. One of the frustrations I had in law enforcement was they didn't meet the expectations I had from the Marine Corps. No one does. Leadership, commitment to the mission and your people is not the same. But your Marine Corps skills will enable you to excell. Even if someone tells you, like they told me, what a dick I was in the academy. Apparently I yelled at someone for forgetting their PT gear 🤣🤣🤣.
I'm also a Marine here Oorah! I took a poly for San Diego PD recently and bombed it somehow. I told the truth. I went from nervous, excited, and then a bit bored and agitated but kept a poker face the entire time. I'm from and live in Nebraska and took 2 round trips out there so the pressure was on. I was told that I would be given a date at which I could reapply if choose to. My answers are not going to change if I do it again. All my cop friends said I'd make a great cop and that I'll do fine. I think I'll just go do something else for a while and if I feel like comeing back I might give it another shot.
I am really thankful for this, because I am willing to disclose all, yet I am terrified of the polygraph. 2x I smoked marijuana at age 23, now I am 27, in a state that it was legal, because my wife, soon to be ex wife legitimately forced me to upon leaving the military. I have a masters degree, 3.9/4.0 gpa, honorable discharge, and a good back ground but the polygraph just spooks me because it doesn't detect lies, it detects nervousness, and if it inherently makes me nervous then how can I pass? Hearing that I can demand a redo is relieving. I may actually apply for a government job now, previously I was staying private sector just because of fear of being all wired up and scrutinized.
I did a lie detector test today 7th /12/ 2020 the lie detector failed me and I was telling the truth I don't think that lie detectives are a 100% accurate. Lie detector can sometimes fail innocent people telling the truth. what must I do because I'm thinking of getting another test done again. I had to borrow £400 off my mother to do the test and I'm not working now that he failed me I have to repay back the money to my mother. I'm distressed and so heartbroken.
I lied about how many times I used marijuana during the background packet, once I sat down for my polygraph I got so nervous and asked if I could disclose something before we started, so I confessed I lied about the drug use, ended up passing the polygraph and the examiner said disclosing before the test started was the smartest thing I did
Raymond Alanis what I lied about during the background wasn’t an automatic disqualifier, Which recent marijuana use is. I guarantee you no department in the nation hires anyone who used marijuana within a month of their polygraph.
luke smith no not at all, however some departments have a maximum amount of times they’ll allow, and some have no limit. It’s on a case by case basis, they’re mainly looking for possible addiction issues
Richard T you're 100% right and law enforcement knows it but they seem to forget that fact unless the results don't go their way. I was falsely arrested once and to help prove my innocence I agreed to a polygraph, which showed that I was telling the truth and did not do what the officers had claimed. They then decided that polygraphs were not reliable and got the results thrown out of evidence. In the end I was forced to take a deal to avoid jail time.

Well said! These are a series of trick questions designed to trap, hence, double bind. You are also correct by saying, “Be truthful.” This is not the time to deceive anyone! So don’t start. I say, “Remain legal and ethical.” “Cooperation without compromise, is crucial.” This also goes for the Department Psychologist. Be sincere. Often times they may have had a tough time getting to work or concerns with family leading to series of projective comments! (Transference and counter transference issues.) One final piece, “It is impossible to fail a psych profile!” In short, the applicant may not have met the profile the agency is looking for. It's not my job to answer stupid questions. Wear a shoe with a wide toe box and glue the tack between two toes so you can step on it when you want. It's not complicated. Are you super low IQ or trolling? You will get caught. Pain stim and the accompanying movement will be caught by the instrument. So just tell the truth or go waste someone elses time.
So, I know they use the belts around your chest to monitor heart rate, and breathing pattern, they use the devices on your fingers to measure sweat gland activity, and they use a Blood Pressure cuff, however, do they use pulse oximetry too? The machine with the little red light on your finger, or earlobe to measure oxygen saturation?? This was a great video!!!

I wouldn't recommend getting a 4 year degree to be a cop. Get a degree after you are hired. But yes, that would really suck to put all that effort in and fail the polygraph.

I did a paper on the polugraph for my undergrad degree. Here is my theory; The polygraph is not a lie detector but a stress evaluation. Getting people to confess to lies is an added bonus. I think the true purpose is to test how you handle the stress of being interrogated in the same manner a defense attorney is going to interrogate you on a witness stand.
@Alfonso Garcia about getting people to confess. Not about it being an interview for court performance. Noone would dare say it is true because there is no real way to prove it. Thus, it is theory.

It's true. I've been interrogated before. They didn't get anything out of me. Later on I took a polygraph and went in with the same "you're not going to break me" attitude and I passed the polygraph. Not only did I passed but I finished alot faster than some of the other testers

Polygraph doesn't measure lie or truth it measures emotions.
And that, fails me... like taking a final on college... it kills my nerves...
Its goes by brain waves, pulse and heart rate.
It measures reactions for comparison and analysis.
Actually they measure physiological responses...
The test can measure heart rate, sweat/pores, breathing and muscle within the torso, feet and hip movement, it depends on how much they hook up to you. They test for inconsistency, sometimes they'll get in your head. The best thing to do is always remain calm and still, answer everything the same, and come clear minded, don't over think it. The poly is a test of confidence in my opinion. Even if you forget to tell small things like that pack of gum you stole when you were 10, if you truly believe in your answers and are confident in them, they'll answer the same.
I took several for LEO jobs in past. Passed them. Ever notice it's the last stage of the process, not the first? They want you to be invested and feel like you have something to lose. If they gave the poly first off you'd be relaxed and not care nearly as much if you passed or failed vs. after you've invested yourself in hours and hours of tests, medical exams, psychs, physical agility tests, paperwork, background etc etc. They want you to feel stress. Next, realize it's all just a game and an interview. Play the game, you'll pass. The game is to convince you the thing works. The game is to convince you they're experts. The game is to convince you they can tell if you're trying to cheat. The more you believe the test is legit the more you'll be afraid of it if you're lying. I agree with him, stay calm and never, ever admit to anything. He's right, they WILL play head games, the oldest trick is to scare you that you didn't pass a question to get you to confess to something. Even if you told the truth they'll try this trick. Why? Because it works, people are stupid and believe it and confess things. It's better to dq with them suspecting you're lying than leaving no doubt by confessing. The exam doesn't start when they hook up the machine. The exam starts the second you walk in the door and ends the second you walk out. The machine is a prop. They want you to believe the machine can perform magic. The meat and potatoes is the interview and the head games they play. Focus on your relationship with the examiner. Be pleasant and friendly and calm. They will try to make you feel like they're your new buddy. They're not but play along anyway. Be their buddy but don't go overboard and kiss ass. Just be friendly and calm, don't fall for the head games and you'll pass. I wish I had more free time on my hands, it would be fun to apply and take the poly and purposely lie to see if i could pass. I'm pretty sure I could.
....yeah, so true what you say, I had a PT a few months ago, the tester was super friendly with me b4 thet test, agreeing with me etc, smiling making me real relaxed, i thought it odd as I never met him b4. Anyway, when the test started, Q's rolling in, he became cold and even unfriendly towards me. This got me nervous, he was like ordering me around, “DON'T MOVE YOUR HEAD, BREATH CORRECTLY, KEEP EYES STRAIGHT AHEAD!!!“ He kinda yeld. I realized what he had done to me a few days later, I felt I had been tricked, I failed btw. I asked him how many years he'd been doing PT, said 10 years, meaning, he knows all the tricks in how to fail you. I honestly told the truth, no lie here.
Perfect example of the head games. Buddy buddy at first then they change their tone to shock you or throw you off guard. It's an appeal to people who don't want to anger or disappoint and like to "make things right" so they might confess things. Oh sorry I offended you, you're right I should have told you about that key of coke I sold last year. Or if you're not the remorseful type, at least just throw you off to see how you react. It's basically good cop bad cop routine all in one person. If you told the truth and failed, demand a new test, knowing what to watch out for. Don't under react when you get accused, don't over react. Just be like I'm surprised you think I'm being deceptive, I am telling the truth sir/mam. This is why I hate them, I passed both of mine but they do try to trick you. The whole thing is a ruse.

polygraph test should be outlawed. you have people who lie and pass them and people who tell the truth and fail them. every human is different and emotions are different. iv'e had a few in my life and one of the testers told me i was not truthful of my name. wtf... my name has been the same since i was born. asked did i ever steal anything? being a truthful person, i thought of everything i stole in my life. i don't care if its a rubber band or car, its still stealing. other people can lie their asses off and pass. what a joke.some people future is dependent on this crap.

I remember my first poly with the State Troopers. I sat there saying everything with honesty as I did with in my application for 2 hours (tons and tons of paper repeating the same thing over and over) and everything went smoothly even tho I was kinda nervous because I never had one before, now Im nervous again because Im taking it for another agency all over again. Guys, he is telling you the truth, just be truthful at the application and you will be fine in the poly.
Same thing happend to me. Just recently took one for my agency I’m getting into and I was so nervous during the whole deal it kept getting a bad reading cause I couldn’t relax. Even though I was being honest everything that I was saying, it kept coming up that I was lying. After watching this and seeing some of the comments I feel a lot better on who to do this now. It was also my first time doing that ever.
“Did you lie, omit or falsify any information on your background packet?” This question supposedly caused the polygraph machine to spike on all 3 rounds of the same line of questions and now I can’t reapply for another year to the biggest department in my state who is hurting for officers(Phx, AZ). The only thing questionable in my background is my Other Than Honorable Discharge(which is not an automatic DQ)from the Navy Reserves in 2009(10 years ago, agencies typically frown upon drug use within 3-7 years). I had experimented with marijuana at a Halloween party on a Friday night prior to my drill weekend and that following Sunday while at drill, I freaked out because I was scared so I admitted to smoking. I was young, drunk, and I thought I was cool which wasn’t the case because I ended up getting discharged. Fast forward to now, I still have a clean record, no felonies no misdemeanors. Never been arrested or booked. Scored 200 points above passing score on the fitness test and an 80% on the written. This is such a hard pill to swallow because I know how much I have to offer.

Cool video!!! George makes a good point , you are Your Own Worst Enemy when you take this test , tell the truth , and don't needlessly stress yourself out prior to taking this test . Years ago in my youth I applied for a major law enforcement agency. I had to take a polygraph test and even though I answered all pre interview questions as truthfully as I could the whole process of being hooked up to a machine psyched me out and made me nervous. Needless to say the results of my polygraph test were inconclusive according to the tester. A few days later I received a disqualification notice for theft issues. The issue was that I took a handful of disposable gloves from my past employer and use them for personal use but I do believe that it was because the test was not a full pass. The moral of the story is that if you are telling the truth reaffirm that in your mind and realize that the polygraph test is nothing to be stressed over if you told the truth. Like others have said, they passed it telling flat-out lies While others have failed it telling the truth and being as nervous as hell. Don't let your fears of this machine cause you to wrongfully fail or in my case get an inconclusive result which is probably the same as failing to some agencies. Looking up all these little tricks to help you pass when you're telling the truth in the first place will just make things worse for you. If you didn't do anything heinous in the past just tell them the truth and relax when you take the polygraph test. You are at the mercy of the guy conducting the test. In my case the interviewer conducting the test tried to stress me out even more by saying," you better not be lying because if you do the little needle will go up and down and tell me the truth, so is there anything you have to tell me?" I simply replied to him," well, you'll see I'm telling the truth when the little needle doesn't move, right?" The polygraph interviewer found a little bit of humor in that and I proceeded to get an inconclusive on the test. At the end of the day if the agency you apply for gets a guy who's not very good at conducting the test and that's the reason why you failed wrongfully, then you should just brush it off and think to yourself that the agency who disqualified you is not worthy of you and you'll eventually find one that is. Needless to say, I got disqualified for a petty theft issue when earlier that week I had found a wallet with over $1,000 in cash and returned it to the owner. I never had a chance to exposed that good deed on my pre-interview test. Remember that people of good moral character get disqualified for some reason or the other every single day so don't let it get you down, go take the test for another department who deserves Someone Like You.

I've taken 2 polygraphs for 2 different departments. My first one was like 5 hours of getting screamed at saying I was a criminal, this and that. Really made me feel like I was lying when I wasn't, it's all a tactic to get you to admit to things. That same week I took another department and was told on the spot I passed it. I passed both at the end. Best tip I can give is TELL THE TRUTH on your Background packet. Is better for you to put that you did drugs, etc. on paper rather than them asking you the question while being hooked up to the machine and see that you're lying when you said you never did drugs. Is better to be honest than get caught lying is my best advice.

This is the best secret. Be honest! They do not expect you to be perfect but they do expect you to own anything that have done that you are proud off if you ever did.
The problem with the polygraph is that the examiner is too often the deciding factor. There are instances where an examiner harasses or intimidates examinees to get them to divulge information, even though the charts don't indicate deception. This is over the line. These aren't criminals, these are job applicants.
When it comes to job applicants, everything should be set up for candidate success. Some tactics should be completely off the table. If the polygraph is that good at getting the truth out of people, then they shouldn't need to resort to shady tactics against a person who just wants a job.
Failed my cbp poly.. I was 100 percent honest the examiner was discriminating me because I live in a border town. I disclosed the same info that I put on my application he was a real jerk. I never switched my story up and he straight up told me if I didn’t admit to something he was going to fail me cause I lived in a border town and I had to be involved in something. I told him to do what he had to do because I’m not involved in anything & sure enough he failed me. Polys are a joke. My brother took one and he passed it said it was 10-15 min long. Mine lasted from 8am-4pm. And the whole time he told me I was failing made me not even want to be there. Horrible experience. Will try one more time now that I know what to expect.

I was discharged (general under honorable conditions) from the army for pissing positive for cocaine. When interrogated by CID, I told them the truth that I do not remember taking anything and also advised them that I was sexually assaulted by another soldier who was encouraging me to drink and party with him. My Platoon Sergeant told me not to say anything as I wasn’t penetrated. My army appointed legal counsel advised me I may have been poisoned and my abuser’s roommate also tested positive when I did indicating it was more likely for poisoning. Regardless I was discharged after being found guilty of wrongful use either knowingly or otherwise it didn’t matter. Would I still be able to work for most law enforcement agencies? When I was transitioning out of the army I was solicited by border patrol but my conditions of discharge require a 2 year hiatus before I can work there.
I think as long as you let some time pass you should be ok. Just be prepared to explain what happened.
Basically, if you’re the type of person who gets nervous easily, then you’re fucked! Even if you told the truth to everything. What a shame

The examiner later told me he believes I was telling the truth🤔 After the fact though. Oh well, gonna try with a different Department.

As a recruiter for the USMS I initially did not like being sent to high schools as I thought my time better spent talking to college students. I realized though that a lot of the college students had already made decisions that negatively affected their ability to get hired (drug use, minor criminal charges, poor driving records, bad credit). I started going to the high schools a lot more and telling them that they needed to start walking the line right then and there.
While this is true. It's also a consequence of the failure of law enforcement agencies.
As they're either hiring someone with no life experience and who don't know themselves and are destined to make terrible mistakes in the future.
Or people who only have ever done everything they've been told in their lives and don't know any better from the truth.
Law Enforcement is struggling today hiring people because the hiring process is not based on truth and based on reality.

I was doing very well with a local county but got kicked for failing the poly. The interviewer was pretty aggressive and said I was lying on sex crimes. I've never done anything on the list she gave me. Blew my mind. I passed the polygraph for a different department. No idea what was wrong with the first operator. Wish I saw your video earlier, I would have requested another operator.

I’ve never gotten in trouble with the law, I’ve tried weed once in high school, no other drug use/anything that would disqualify me.but I think the examiner may think I’m lying or something. I have a polygraph with cbp coming up soon, and they fail about 70% of applicants. It’s hard to believe that 7 out of 10 people who apply for cbp aren’t good enough people to be law enforcement officers. Polygraph is a joke

I recently applied for a Police Officer Recruit position/academy sponsored with my city’s police department and so far I’ve passed the application screening, the telephone interview, and now my physical ability test is next. Upon completion of that test, I’ll move onto the written test and oral board interview.
I must say, the process already seems thorough. In my city, our police department doesn’t have people take a polygraph, we have people take the CVSA test, which isn’t as complicated. I guess they just clip a microphone on your shirt and begin asking you questions from your job application.
I have moderate anxiety, and any time I’m doing something new or experiencing some sort of change, I’m always nervous.
My wedding day, I was nervous. The day my daughter was born, I was nervous, high school graduation, I was nervous.
But watching police recruit videos makes me feel a little better.

@@2k18SRTHELLCAT Some cities offer a sponsorship through their police departments. Usually there’s recruitments once or twice a year for either a fall or spring academy. Just look on your city’s employment page and the job title will either say “recruit/academy sponsored,” or “cadet/academy sponsored.”
thank you for video, i'm looking up everything i need to be ready for to become a LEO, first i will be a volunteer officer and try to go to school for my associates psychology for when i become a sworn LEO i can use it on the field and have a chance for promotions... i dont care if i dont get paid for being a volunteer and get shot in the line of duty i would have died doing what i always truly wanted to do. i think the process for me will be easy because being truthful from the first day you put your application is the key to passing it. no matter what the truth will set you free at a 2nd chance at a new life because its a lifestyle not just a job.
I just recently was DQ’d for a year because the examiner believed I was withholding information about drug use. I can tell u certainly this guy is right. If u are telling the truth u have nothing to worry about just stick to ur guns. What happened to me was I was unsure of the amount of times I’ve smoke marijuana in high school, he asked me why it looked like I was being deceptive. I told him it’s hard to give a truthful answer to a question u don’t honestly know the answer to. now that I am here in the chair I am worried it may have been more that I put on the application. It was that simple and I have to wait until next year to apply again. Honestly the test was a load of horse shit and the guy giving me the test was attempting to put words in my mouth, a part of his job, and trying to get me to say I’ve used more drugs and that I’m a habitual pot smoker. None of that is true. These guys are to forensics as what witch doctors are to medicine. It’s discouraging but u have to learn and move on. Just stick to ur guns and u will be fine.

Not true, it's based on changes from your base line to the actual test the examiner has no say (per sey)
@@Dero_milsurp that is incorrect good sir. The "Baseline" is determined by the applicant not the examiner.
It is the only logical reason so many people with, seemingly, spotless backgrounds would claim they pass and fail these exams at inconsistent rates. I am willing to bet they do not maintain their composure when accused of lying by the investigator. Even if you are telling the truth, your reaction to being called a liar and having your reputatiin and integrity questioned could cause a jury to doubt your testimony.

I’ll never understand why the cops won’t use a lie detector in court, but they will use it for their hiring process?
My first polygraph came back as “no opinion”. Got my second on this week and hoping I pass. I figure if police departments are insisting you take a polygraph they should skip the psych exam and make you take a personality test using phrenology, or a traditional Chinese medicine doctor for my physical. It’s about as scientific and accurate as those things.

If you are a sociopath or a psychopath its very easy to beat a polygraph. You just have to make yourself truly believe your lie is reality. Those who are cold and dont feel.empathy or are numb from years of suppressing emotions can lie to your face without blinking an eye.

the thing is, ive done something thats messed up. i dont know if thats an instant DQ if i fess up. should i fess up before the exam and let them know wat i did? one is that i impersonated a cop by getting a blue/red lights and run a red light. (3am, no traffic) the other 2 are really messed up.

@@BP-vr3rt messed up shit lol one of them happened on accident. really dont wanna say. but i spoke with 3 officers in my town and pretty much told me, it happened a long time ago, never did it again, not to worry to much, ive never been arrested so more likely im good. they laughed wen i told impersonated. told me not to worry, its more serious wen u tell others ur a cop in a fake uniform and trying to pull cars over. i never did those things, just ran a red light w/ blue n reds and was never caught cuz no one saw me. yes its still impersonation of a public servant but it happened a long time ago, i passed the Statue of limitation of 7 years (in Texas). so they cant charge me.

Thank you. I don't want people to lie. Lies have a tendency to catch up with you. But polygraphs are so stressful it is easy to get a false positive and I want as many qualified people as possible to get hired.

Fine video of useful information. Polygraphs are a part of more government employment processes that most people think. In some agencies, they are part of a review process that determines if you keep your job or not. I have taken more of them than I can remember and what you say about the skills of an individual examiner is so true. Even the examiner's attitude about what the purpose of their job is can make a difference. I've known people whose reaction to taking a polygraph makes it impossible to get any meaningful results. The accuracy of a polygraph is debatable at best and the depictions of how polygraph are given and used ranges from inaccurate to hysterically unbelievable. Still, they are a fact of life for the time being. Yours is great advice - be honest and tell the truth up front. Quite often a transgression is viewed as far less of a problem than an attempt to hide it. Be well - peace
Skipton95 Most police applicants are disqualified for dishonesty not the underlying behavior.
The only secret is to be honest. Before the test make sure you eat and drink. Do not necessarily picture the question but just stay focused and let your body answer. It is really stressful but don’t try to control your emotions and feelings express them and when it’s time to answer once again tell the truth . If you ever see the question like an accusation your emotions are going to take over and that could affect the results badly… for exemple if you have cheated in the past just be honest and assume it even if you shouldn’t be proud of it
Polygraph is total bullshit. I had to take them all the time when I was younger. A nervous person or person with anxiety always fails.
Ten years ago during an argument, my spouse tried to forcefully remove our baby daughter while I was holding her. I felt she was endangering our daughter and my natural reaction was to slap her face with my one free hand (the other one holding the baby). I didn't even think about the ramifications. Pure reaction, that I have since regretted and have never repeated since. Police were not called, and there were no charges. But I admitted to this before the polygraph. The polygrapher took this information to the CPT in charge, and the determination was that I did not meet their hiring standards. I was disqualified and permanently barred from future employment. This happened today. Domestic violence with this department and others is only listed as automatically disqualifying if there is a conviction, which in this case there certainly was not. It was my own admission. My question is if I can expect similar outcomes with other departments I've applied with and if I have any recourse to an appeal of their decision. If I'm wasting my time going forward in my LEO career pursuit, I'd certainly like to know because the time away from work is a financial strain and could also result in termination at my present job. Any comments and feedback are appreciated.

The polygraph examination is undoubtedly bunk psueodoscience and totally falls down to the interpretations of individuals. They have been peer tested out the wazoo and found to be totally unreliable. In fact, if it wasn't for police agencies being strangely reliant on them, they'd be totally gone from public use and become the historic relics they deserve to be.

Hey @Professor Walker! I did my Polygraph yesterday and fully disclosed everything on my PHS, Polygraph Questionnaire and Polygraph interview about my prior drug use, work history, etc... I met with the examiner and we hit it off. Things went extremely well and I felt comfortable enough to take the polygraph. The test took about 3-4 hours and the examiner said that I was inconclusive on one part(Harm to persons) and failed the second part(drug usage). I was and have been completely honest and only experimented with marijuana 2x in 2008 and that was all, which I disclosed to everyone and anyone that’s asked me. Then the examiner said things like “I hope the department gives you a second chance”, “You’re a great candidate and I can tell you’re an honest person”, “Is there anything else you’re hiding?” Basically trying to get a confession out of me even though I don’t have anything else to confess. Is this just a scare tactic to try and get me to confess to something? I was 110% honest and am unsure why I failed the test. I was extremely nervous just seeing the machine not to mention actually taking the darn thing. If he says I failed does that mean I’m DQed from the process or is he just playing games with me?

Im currently applying for the sheriffs office ( im 22 years old) I have to do a polygraph soon. I have no bad record im basically clean and im really committed and want the job but im no angel. I done 2 small bad things i did last year. I never got caught doing. I only done them 1 or 2 times in my life time. And i regret doing them as i am more mature now.Im taking this serious and want to make my family proud and help people in my community. But im nervous bc of these 2 things DQ me. Wish me luck.
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Just be transparent, police agencies look for integrity and a good moral compass. They understand that not everyone is perfect. Good luck to you all that are making the journey towards the badge.

It is a useful tool to get confessions from applicants. You get nervous and change your story. Bam, now you have been caught in a lie.

Ms Mrs Mr(Other) Staples, Smaller cities can't afford to self insure(both liability, and workers comp), so an insurance salesman can then DICTATE what may be asked of a new hire. Including making the polygraph mandatory. It makes no sense, but we aren't insurance adjusters, and there is never a lack of attorneys to file liability law suits. This is the reason behind stopping police chases, the infractions don't justify the potential loss of life and property. The areas that can afford to self insure, then follow in lock step the decisions of the liability insurance companies(ie polygraphs etc). It stinks, but this is the reality of city policing today, limit liability.
I wish I had seen this video before, I did a retest last month and fail, because I gave underbthe pressure and started thinking that maybe I need smoke more that what I already had told him, maybe It was 10 times but each time I took a hit out of 2 different Joints of Marijuana ext. Said that I smoked more times that what I new I did, He was so persuasive and told me he wanted to help me pass but that I needed to admit something that Was a lie itself.
This was after he disconnected me from the machine, told me to sit down at a different seat, post test, and started to acuse me like a criminal and he got me good. He told me that the drug question was bothering me that I was reacting to it, after telling him like 5 time that I was telling the truth at the end I was so mentally drained that I told him what he wanted to hear.
End of story, lost my future career

That same examiner will lie to a suspect on his results in order to get a confession because they perceive you guilty its Bull shit A dam lair giving some1 a polygraph it goes further cops can lie and make up stories trying to get a suspect to admit some wrong and it's these folks giving the Lie detector test. I like good non lying cops I don't like the lair cops

I have heart conditions an at any given moment my heart could rise would that be something I should bring up to them? Would it disqualify me?
If you have a heart condition, you are not suited to be an officer
It's deemed a high risk or dangerous job, having a heart condition is something a department can't really work with... they can work with stuff like ADD or other disorders that don't make you that much of a liability.
I hope you didn’t let them discourage you . There is certain heart conditions you can have and still work in law enforcement.
I got dropped from San Diego PD polygraph test. They gave me an email of no retakes if and or buts. However, I was given a 2 year wait to reapply.
The polygraph is the whole reason why the Steve Wilkos show is soo successful.. I mean what if some of these people were actually telling the truth but the polygraph says otherwise.

@@gunnyjwells1977 From a Marine corporal to a gunny, I would expect nothing less. One of the frustrations I had in law enforcement was they didn't meet the expectations I had from the Marine Corps. No one does. Leadership, commitment to the mission and your people is not the same. But your Marine Corps skills will enable you to excell. Even if someone tells you, like they told me, what a dick I was in the academy. Apparently I yelled at someone for forgetting their PT gear 🤣🤣🤣.
I'm also a Marine here Oorah! I took a poly for San Diego PD recently and bombed it somehow. I told the truth. I went from nervous, excited, and then a bit bored and agitated but kept a poker face the entire time. I'm from and live in Nebraska and took 2 round trips out there so the pressure was on. I was told that I would be given a date at which I could reapply if choose to. My answers are not going to change if I do it again. All my cop friends said I'd make a great cop and that I'll do fine. I think I'll just go do something else for a while and if I feel like comeing back I might give it another shot.

I am really thankful for this, because I am willing to disclose all, yet I am terrified of the polygraph. 2x I smoked marijuana at age 23, now I am 27, in a state that it was legal, because my wife, soon to be ex wife legitimately forced me to upon leaving the military. I have a masters degree, 3.9/4.0 gpa, honorable discharge, and a good back ground but the polygraph just spooks me because it doesn't detect lies, it detects nervousness, and if it inherently makes me nervous then how can I pass? Hearing that I can demand a redo is relieving. I may actually apply for a government job now, previously I was staying private sector just because of fear of being all wired up and scrutinized.
I did a lie detector test today 7th /12/ 2020 the lie detector failed me and I was telling the truth I don't think that lie detectives are a 100% accurate. Lie detector can sometimes fail innocent people telling the truth. what must I do because I'm thinking of getting another test done again. I had to borrow £400 off my mother to do the test and I'm not working now that he failed me I have to repay back the money to my mother. I'm distressed and so heartbroken.
I lied about how many times I used marijuana during the background packet, once I sat down for my polygraph I got so nervous and asked if I could disclose something before we started, so I confessed I lied about the drug use, ended up passing the polygraph and the examiner said disclosing before the test started was the smartest thing I did

luke smith no not at all, however some departments have a maximum amount of times they’ll allow, and some have no limit. It’s on a case by case basis, they’re mainly looking for possible addiction issues

Richard T you're 100% right and law enforcement knows it but they seem to forget that fact unless the results don't go their way.
I was falsely arrested once and to help prove my innocence I agreed to a polygraph, which showed that I was telling the truth and did not do what the officers had claimed. They then decided that polygraphs were not reliable and got the results thrown out of evidence. In the end I was forced to take a deal to avoid jail time.

Well said! These are a series of trick questions designed to trap, hence, double bind. You are also correct by saying, “Be truthful.” This is not the time to deceive anyone! So don’t start. I say, “Remain legal and ethical.” “Cooperation without compromise, is crucial.” This also goes for the Department Psychologist. Be sincere. Often times they may have had a tough time getting to work or concerns with family leading to series of projective comments! (Transference and counter transference issues.) One
final piece, “It is impossible to fail a psych profile!” In short, the applicant may not have met the
profile the agency is looking for. So don’t give up on your dream in becoming a Police Officer. Stay sharp and focused.

It's not my job to answer stupid questions. Wear a shoe with a wide toe box and glue the tack between two toes so you can step on it when you want. It's not complicated. Are you super low IQ or trolling?
You will get caught. Pain stim and the accompanying movement will be caught by the instrument. So just tell the truth or go waste someone elses time.
the tac goes in the heel thru the insole. you walk on your toes b4 you go in. You squeeze down on it w/constant pressure from hook-up to un-hook.
So, I know they use the belts around your chest to monitor heart rate, and breathing pattern, they use the devices on your fingers to measure sweat gland activity, and they use a Blood Pressure cuff, however, do they use pulse oximetry too? The machine with the little red light on your finger, or earlobe to measure oxygen saturation?? This was a great video!!!
I didn't think polygraphs were legal anymore for hiring purposes. I guess that law doesn't apply to government at any level.
