When I took my polygraph for my PD, the detective would randomly walk out of the room, wait 5 minutes then come back in. He also tried to pull the “there is a discrepancy” to try to make me change an answer or admit I’m with holding information. But I passed. Just stare straight ahead. Simple yes or no answer. Don’t overthink the questions and you’re golden.
Mine did the same thing! I was convinced he was swapping out the paper for one with discrepancies on it lol He'd never show me before he walked out, only after.
I took a poly today, he walked out and asked me if i was lying...he said i failed every question. He moved the blood pressure cuff, and moved the finger monitoring devices to my palm of my hand....i don't know what to think about it tbh. I passed one before for a different agency...but for this one, it was hell

Same thing happened to me for the fire department last month. Every comment on here is what happened. I was told he couldn't submit the results until I told him what I was hiding. Funny thing is, I'm still on the eligible list.
Couldn't agree more with this. I took my first with Homeland Security, was accused of cheating and totally bombed it. Took my next one with a police department, gave the same answers to the same questions and passed with flying colors. The two polygraphers were a night and day difference. Rule #1: never change or doubt an answer. Rule #2: see rule 1
@FRWD its like flipping a 🪙. You can be truthful and have a clean record and you can still fail because the machine says so. Relax just go in there answers the questions and hope that you pass because its no you to pass. Its the machine and the poligraph examiner that decide whether you pass or not. It it was reliable you would see so many physchos working law enforcement.
My best advice is to have a plan b.
I failed the bp poligraph, i was truthful with a clean record and still failed. I dont feel bad because i already knew it was 50 50.

I had to take a poly for my city's PD. The guy prefaced the test with a whole speech about his career as a detective and how he's done polygraphs to get confessions from all kinds of people. He was completely convinced his machine could tell him things I didn't even know I was thinking about. He left the room and came back in multiple times saying I was lying, calling me a thief, etc. He kept asking me questions in different ways trying to get me to change my answers, and got more and more frustrated when I didn't. He even told me I failed twice, but was going to "let me try again". Eventually I told him, "Look, if I failed, I failed. I'm not going to sit here and confess to something I've never done, so if we're done here could you please unhook me so I can go home? I don't want to break anything by taking it off myself." and he was like "WAIT, hold on, settle down. There's a WHOLE lot more to this test than just this." I'm not even sure what he meant by that, but then he left again and came back into the room with a different set of questions. After I answered those, he told me to grab my keys and walked me out. He wouldn't tell me if I passed or failed. Turns out I passed lol. Worst interview experience of my life. The keys to success: Don't change your answers from you pre-interview packet, and don't let him talk you into changing your answers during the interview/interrogation.
If you passed, then he is supposed to say, "You came out NDI, or "You passed so far." However, as part of this process, your charts will go up to our Quality Control folks at HQs. If they don't agree with my call, are you willing to come back and take the test again?" 99% of the time, if the examinee really wanted the job, they will say, "Yes, I'll take the test again."
If you go, "NO," he is supposed to give you another polygraph exam that same day. But not more than two exams a day.
Here again, however, how they administer the polygraph will be determined by the parameters or thresholds that agency is wanting that determines the types of questions being asked.

I applied with two departments when I ETSed. One was a Sheriffs Dept. After I took the poly test, they sent a letter and said I did not fail it, but I did not pass it. The letter went on to say that due to this I am banned from ever working for that department for life. The other poly I took was with Houston, TX PD and passed no problem. In the end I did not end up becoming an officer and with the way things are these days I am beyond thankful!!!
Nice info as always, I was /am certified as a voice stress analysis operator. Same function as a polygraph but detects stress levels in your voice so it can be used over the phone if needed. Point is, everything Buck is saying is 100% correct. These test only detect stress levels and plenty of people have stress when they know they are being questioned. The objective is to show you the chart and point out that you are being deceptive to see if you will change your story. Bottom line is they are tools to get a confession , not a magical box that knows when you lie.

CVSA is garbage. I was told by the lieutenant that the microphone could "measure my subconscious" by analyzing my voice. Complete comedy.
@@muldrowe ha , yeah that’s funny ! It does detect stress in your voice by showing a tightening of the chart pattern during answers. But that’s all it does.
VSA isn't as accurate as the polygraph instrument. And its not because I'm a polygraph examiner.
I won't say where I was but I was in charge and they were using the VSA for their interrogations when I first arrived there. The mere fact they were using multiple relevant issue questions in there lengthy interrogations, skewed the results, unlike polygraph exams, where is only one issue being tested.
Moreover, the training for the VSA in minimal, at best, compared to the 14 weeks of graduate level classes offered by the fed when training to become a polygraph examiner.
Lastly, most police departments go for the VSA because it takes less time to train someone up and they are cheaper to buy than a polygraph instrument.

I took 4 with CBP... 2 good polygrapher, and 1 bad one. Passed one the rest inconclusive. I got really really hit me and brought me down. If youre watching this because you were in a similar situation...DONT beat yourself up. Like he said, dust your shoulder off and keep trying!! I got into another law enforcement agency and i cant not imagine working with CBP and being unhappy. Everything happens for a reason, but dont quit, keep trying.
CBP is awful - there's a vested interest in not passing applicants
Just failed the CBP poly. I agree, cannot make sense of it at all. I was told I was lying when I was not. They try to make you agree with the results no matter what. no matter what you say they basically try to make you lie and tell them something that never happened just because they say they have a reaction on the question being asked. I am no sure if it was only me but my experience also gave me a lot of cringe when the examiner stared at my face for like 3 straight minutes while saying nothing even asking him multiple times to continue or what was next?. I am so disgusted after that polygraph so I am not planning on reapplying in two years.
I failed the CBP polygraph two days ago. Totally ridiculous.
This literally blows my mind cuz they are severely understaffed and hurting for people lol. All my buddies failed the cbp poly and they were all army and deployed and even spoke spanish.

I've taken two in my life. The most professional one was conducted on me by the USSS during their applicant process. The person was very detailed in describing me what was going to happen. This test was 5 hours long so I did my part to ensure that I had plenty to rest and a good meal prior to the next day. Being relaxed is key as well as being honest. If you don't understand a question, don't be worried if you have to ask the question again, as you need to be 100% sure of what the interviewer is wanting from you. I stared at the wall so hard I thought it turned into liquid by the end of the test but I was explained I did well and continued in the applicant process.
LOL, I just took a polygraph and the wall started to play games with me, started to look like animals and by the end I swear the wall was turning into liquid as well.
I am a Sex Offense Specific Therapist. We use polygraphers all the time. In Colorado individuals convicted of sex offenses are required to take a poly every 6 months. We are trying to get disclosures from the clients in order to increase public safety through disclosures, not necessarily whether or not they are truthful or deceptive. As far as reliability, my humble opinion is that although it is useful, it really is hard for me to say that I trust the results 100% of the time. I would say I trust them 70% of the time and the person doing the exam makes a HUGE difference. Some individuals seem to do better than others, lots of different variables to consider. I think what Mr. Rodgers is saying is valid, great info for the public! Especially on a polarizing topic that is loaded with myth and misunderstanding. Thanks!!!

@@ericbellgardt9909 ya man. So my I have a friend who hooked me up with a local recruiter. He went ahead of me cause I had work and told them what I wanted and what not. So my recruiter stayed after hours for me to get there when I got off work. So when I showed up he had a idea of what I wanted. So when I got there he just asked me 18x huh? I said yes sir. Just asked some questions about me and what not. Then he had me take a practice Picat which is how they're doing the asvab now. Got my score back and got like a 75 AFQT score. He said that pretty good. Then before we went any farther he looked to see if there was any actual contracts out. There was one. So some how some way he reserved it for me until I took the actual Picat last night. Had me stressed out all night and morning cause you don't know the score. I called this morning and told them I finished the test. Went during my lunch break to see what I actually got. I sit down and he was like "what do you think you got?" I had no idea. I thought I flunked that shit. He smiles grab the sheet and it says 95 on it. I met and went beyond the score I needed. He then said you surprised me man. These contracts are extremely hard to get. Then we talked about meps and the confirmation test that I gotta take to lock that score in.

A polygraph is used to calibrate your breathing, heart rate, and sweat glans. So they will ask calibrating questions first. Is your name ______, is your shirt this color, etc. Once they calibrate your levels, then they ask you questions to compare your bodies reaction to those questions. THEN......they will always say something to the affect of "You know on question #8 your heart rate changed. Is there something maybe you forgot to put on your background check that maybe you just remembered?" So Buck is correct. They are trying to not detect a lie, but to get you to admit that there is a discrepancy on your background application. It is only meant to get you to admit something that you didn't mention. A polygraph test is not admissible in court for a reason. They don't work. The investigator is the one who finds your lie.

Haven't, taken one, but I've taken a Voice Stress Analyzer. Guess it works somewhat similar, but with the voice levels.
Took a polygraph yesterday. Not sure if I failed or if it was inconclusive, but long story short I’m disqualified from my application. They asked me relevant calibration questions like “Did you write the number 3?” and “Did you write the number 1?” to see what the reaction to a lie would be. The problem was I was nervous as shit and one of the questions on the test which was too open worded hit close to home with me and I remembered an incident that I felt guilty about that wasn’t on my background. This wasn’t anything criminal or serious, but something I knew was wrong that I had managed to move on from and forget. Unfortunately this guy used interrogation techniques and it worked. I wrote down the incident, which probably got me disqualified since it wasn’t on my initial background
You're wrong. And here's why.
Polygraph exams are another investigative tool used during the course of a special government project requiring access to certain classified information or programs. Some call it a, "discriminator." Polygraph results are not the only vehicle used to filter applicants or existing employee.
The instrument does get calibrated, but by the instrument's software. The questions you are referring to are called, "irrelevant issue questions."
Pre-test interview is where the administrative aspect of the polygraph is discussed with the examinee. Health, Drug use/medications, pregnancy, etc.
Then there is the acquaintance test. "Pick a number from 0 - 8 not being 0 or 8." So let's say you pick the number 4. I would tell you, when I ask you the question, "Did you write the number 4, I would want you to lie (directed lie)." This test is conducted to show the examinee that the instrument does work. Your physiological parameters will respond to the directed lie thus proving to you that the instrument does detect those physiological changes that do occur when the subject feels threaten by the question (discovery).
Then the in-test, which is the actual polygraph exam itself. Three charts per test, with no more than two test a day. Otherwise, you have to give them 24-48 hours to recover before administering the test again. At times, the agency will bring in a different polygraph examiner to do the new tests. State agencies have different and less stringent standards than the feds even though the feds are trying to get the entire polygraph community on the same sheet of music. Standardized the requirements.
Depending on what type of polygraph examiner you are, simply, are you a fed working for "the agency" requiring the polygraph? Are you a fed working for a federal law enforcement agency requiring the polygraph? Are you an intel polygraph examiner and do Counter-Intelligence (CI) scope polygraphs? The purpose and subsequent questions surround the type of job or mission the examinee is going to be either exposed to or actually participate in.
Polygraph examinations are admissible in court but it depends on what federal court district you're in, and whether the prosecution proffers, with the defense's concurrence, to drop the charges, let's say, if the examinee comes up, "No Deception Indicated." Here again, depending on what the need is determines what types of questions are formulated to ask the examinee. Where the polygraph might not be admitted during trial, it can be used in a sentencing hearing.
"Inconclusive ," is no longer used. Its now called, "No Opinion." Here again, there are similar reasons for coming up with a "No Opinion" call as I've already discussed in an earlier post. The main reason is, "What is the exam testing and the examinee's understanding of the questions. Therefore, if the physiological parameters (pneumos, galvanic skin response, and blood pressure and volume, are weak, its an indicator the examinee is either, 1) not paying attention to your questions, 2) doesn't understand your questions, and therefore needs clarity, or 3) they are simply conducting countermeasures.
There are only two calls I am concerned about as an examiner; a "Deception Indicated, (DI)" and a, "No Opinion (NO)." Why? When an examinee goes DI, its my job to get him/her to admit or confess the thing. I then have them clarify, I re-write the question based on the new info, and then ask the question again in the new format. An "NO" is concerning because you never want an "NO" as an examiner because, 99% of the time, you did not psychologically set the examinee for the examine so its on you, and not the examinee.

I agree with what he said. It's a whole head game. That's it. It's just another interview. The reason agencies use them is because people fall for it, it does weed out stupid people. The name of the game is getting you to admit to stuff. So don't do it, don't change your story. Part of the head game is they will tell you that your answer was suspicious or you might be lying on something. -- they're bluffing. Don't fall for it. My advice: just play the game, be cool and calm, pretend to take them seriously, don't fall for their bluffing, stick to your guns and you'll be fine.

Hands down the best video on polygraphy probably on the Internet on the Internet. I've taken 3 myself for myself for 3 different 3 letter agencies in my experience was similar to yours except it was 2 bad ones and a good one. Had "bad" cop, "good" cop, the actual professional polygrapher that didn't try to lie about the machine and what it did. (No bs numbers test) etc.
Whether you pass or fail 100% depends upon the dynamics between you and the interrogator/polygrapher

My job as a polygraph examiner is a seeker of truth. The word, "truth," is based on the examinee's physiological responses to the relevant issue questions.
Good cop bad cop - Not in polygraph exams. Yes, do I have to make you like me? Of course, you're not going to admit or confess to an asshole, are you? And keep in mind, I'm analyzing everything about you from the minute I get your application, police report, etc., and confirm it when I interview you.
Here too, what are the thresholds/tolerance levels, that the agency that is requiring you to take a polygraph consider acceptable? That determines the types of questions being posed. Simple example, If I ask you, "Have you ever taken any illegal drugs that were not prescribed to you by a medical doctor." If you respond with, "I smoked weed for a year." My next question would be, how many times a day did you smoke weed for that year. Then I would re-write the question to read, "Other than what you told me, have you ever taken any illegal drugs that were not prescribed to you by a medical doctor. If you told me everything you should clear that question. if you don't, then you felt threatened by your discovery and responded in a physiological manner that indicated deception.
@@elvisacosta6666 so ill go by posts you have posted on here. It seems like everytime someone who has some deal of credibility, in this case its a green beret who went through sere school, questioned the use of this machine. An individual who identifies themselves as an examiner comes into counter the message. This happened on another video where the video maker was a retired DEA SA.
Part of me suspects, maybe you have decent intentions, and are trying to educate people. The other part of me believes that you're coming on here to do damage control. Ie an applicant will watch this and when they have to go take one of these, the polygrapher won't get a reading on them since they watched this video and think the detective, SA, or officer is full of shit when talking to them.
Here is the last thing I will say about the usage of this in hiring. There have been a number of times where a person has passed a polygraph, and then derogatory information is developed during a background investigation. I.E usually information that should have been disclosed, or if the person administering the exam is so fantastic at conducting the exam they would have obtained this information. Now if the exam was used after an investigation where field work has been done, to verify information different story. What I just described doesn't happen, because doing the exam before a background (costs thousands of dollars) is more cost efficient. To put it bluntly obtaining the truth takes longer than 45 minutes or 4 to 5 hours, which is how long exams can last.

I had one many years ago for the Denver Police Academy. The original application clearly asked if I had ever done drugs, I checked no. Then on the polygraph I "failed" the question about ever doing drugs, but when asked if I lied on the application it was fine.....never trusted the test after that

They never told me I failed but the PD rejected me 6 months later. Holy shit the polygraph was a horrible experience. Every time they asked a prodding question I felt my heart jump out, I just couldn't calm down. I felt like I was strapped in to the electric chair.

There are SOF "jobs" that require a poly and specifically there are "jobs" in SF that require it. Buck is correct a poly is not needed for a TS or TS/SCI. However, some TS/SCI require a CI Poly. Now, generally you will not take a life style poly in SOF. In my time I have taken at least a half dozen CI polys and one life style. The CI poly is good for 5 years but many be required to be updated for security reasons. So depending what rabbit hole you go down in SOF or in SF you will be required to have a poly. Buck congrats on the book!

Dude I had the same experience. Did it for my local police department and passed it no problem. Was kicked out of process for whatever reasons later on. I applied to another department and went though polygraph and failed it three times in a row. I wasn’t lying, I told them literally everything I’ve ever done. But they seemed convinced I was lying and it made me nervous not because I was lying but because I felt like I was doing something wrong and was worried I was going to fail. End of the day, I said fuck it, wasn’t my fault. Special Forces sounds like a better career choice to me anyways.

Buck, can you please do a video on the language course. It’s long and I’m sure there’s a lot that goes into it, tests, day to day while in the language portion. Also can you test out if you’re bilingual? Keep the good stuff comin’
Also Ive heard people who speak a second language already can skip the course? Is this true and what language skill level do they need to be at?
I heard it was removed from the Q in 2020
I understand that if you are already bilingual, they will probably send you to a course for a different language to expand your capabilities.
I forgot get which video it was is, but Buck said if you were bilingual, the army would try and double dip and send you to a different language.
im under the impression for every language you get bonus pay for like up to 4 languages so if you only speak two theres still motivation to better yourself so if youre gonna skip the course just because you know two youre not gonna be the best of the best and isnt that why you want to be SF
Attended SERE in 1987. Fun stuff. Won’t elaborate and spoil it for others but would just say enjoy it. You will learn a lot about yourself mentally.
I was injured prior to this test. I went through this when I worked for the DOJ. I didn’t lie, I’m just that messed up!
Man the polygraph gave me so much anxiety and I honestly have lived a pretty clean life. Just a stressful thing. Told them about smoking pot when I was 19 and got dismissed from my conditional hire. Waited a couple years and applied again and the same guy administered my poly even though it was with a different agency. He was a dickhead but passed it, start FTO next month
Some agencies have policies about drug use. Most agencies don’t want you smoking weed or any other drug within 3-5 years. Maybe it was because of the time of smoking weed?
Your story reminds me of an episode of forensic files where king shit private detective used a polygraph and other science and pseudoscience techniques to catch the bad guy. The other side in the case tore apart all of his work because he had no idea how to do any of it properly. That stuff gets dangerous when you think about the potential to let in people to one of these agencies who may have normally failed the test..crashed and burned it.. compared to keeping people out who would pass with flying colors normally. Hopefully the people that get screwed know enough to ask for a do-over with a different polygrapher, and of course more than just this test would be put under a microscope to keep the crazies out either way.
Yeah I guess I wasn't so lucky, it was the last step in my CBP hiring process and she had me off and on the machine for eight hours convinced I was trying to manipulate the machine. Insane the amount of power given to one person who happened to changed the course of my life and not for the better. No wonder Border Patrol has a hiring problem.
Same happened to me. I was told I was manipulating the test when I legit don't know how.

Hey, I hope you (or anyone with Military experience). I want to join the Army and get a degree and would also like to join SF. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with Scoliosis. I was wondering what can I do to stay under the 20 curve degree limit and are people with Scoliosis allowed in SF?
Do you think you could talk about army veterinarians or the ones attached to special operations?

The routine polys given for Army Signals Intelligence MOS are just the counter intelligence scope once every 5 years by army regulation, if you join 35N you can expect the poly within a few months of beginning the 26 week MOS School. To my knowledge, not experience, the civilian employee poly for the 3 letter agencies are a blend of ci scope and then a more detailed lifestyle background questionare. At the end of the day as he said, it's just a tool and used along with the actual sf86 packet that you fill out for the background investigations. That's the packet you don't lie on for a TS. They do investigate its not a records check, people knock on doors sit down and/or call to interview your friends and family on that paperwork and its reviewed with you as well face to face at some point as well.

My mom was a detective and polygraph examiner for a police department. When I was a teenager, she would take me with her to some of her training classes. I got to be a test dummy for the students there. I've probably been hooked up to at least 30 polygraphs. I can state for a fact that there is no pass or fail. Its all on how the examiner interprets the data on the graph. Some test I lied and still passed, others i told the truth and failed. Departments are really passing over good applicants over such a broken device. I was a bad kid growing up. Got into all kind of trouble. Smoked weed, stole things. Took a polygraph in my 20s for a correction officers position. I lied on every question. Guess what? I still got the job. One thing I learned and stuck by my whole life was to never ever confess to anything. Wise advice from my mother and my air force recruiter.
I had Top Secret clearance as well. No poly just the background for PRP.

I personally know a few guys that have been though it all. They said the paperwork for the clearances was a lot worse. One was a secret special access.... filled out the huge pile of paperwork... a digit on an address from like 15 years prior was off and he had to do it all over again. Had a neighbor that was a computer guy.... one day got a knock on the door and was told that he had applied for a clearance and they were investigating him and had questions.... told them I did not know him that well but seemed to live a normal life and never saw anything out of the ordinary.... they thanked me for my time and went to the next neighbor. Was obvious it was not the normal special access investigation.
I can handle being grilled.... went though a long custody battle in court that lasted years.... but paperwork? Can’t stand it

There is a reason we cannot submit polygraph results as evidence in criminal investigations but we can use two other techniques that can detect deception in both verbal and written statements.
Had to do it twice in 4yrs, for TS/BI, then again 2yrs later for TS/SBBI with SCI billets...96B/35F...first time was weird, second one was by my CI friend, wasn't bad...

I was in Signal Corps (enlisted), held a TS/Crypto clearance; never took a polygraph test.
Thinking about going 18x I’m just nervous about the physical aspect!!! I’m pretty in shape now just lack in push-ups and sit-ups only way 150lbs I really have been training Daily just worried about not getting to the standards will I have enough time to get fit enough for the q course with an 18x contract? There are 3 types of questions that show up on a typical Poly:
Irrelevants - Questions such as "Is your name Bob?" The polygrapher tells you that these are control questions, but they're not. They're totally irrelevant and don't really get considered in your chart.
Control Questions - These are questions designed to make you think they're relevant. The polygrapher will tell you they're designed to tell if you're the "type of person" who would commit a crime. They sound like, "in the past year, have you lost your temper with a loved one?" The polygrapher wants you to say No about this, and they expect everyone to be lying. This is the control, as it is designed to elicit what a "lie" looks like for the suspect.
Relevant Questions - These are direct questions about the thing you're being interrogated on. They're phrased like, "Did you kill Jane Doe" or "Did you steal the money from the safe."
If your responses to the Relevant Questions spike higher than the Control Questions, the polygrapher makes the determination that you're showing deception.
None of the things being measured on your body are indicators of honesty or deception. Spikes in the test can be caused by any number of things: eye movement, gas pains, reflux, itches in your body, tics, mental/learning disabilities such as ADHD, GAD or Autism Spectrum... even simply being stressed about the nature of the question can elicit a response. If you're being investigated for the murder of a loved one and you're innocent, you can fail a polygraph simply through the stress of being ASKED whether you're guilty of the crime. You can also fake these responses quite easily (control questions - hint hint). Polygraphers will tell you they can tell the difference. But, when put to the test, no polygrapher has been able to demonstrate this ability at any better rate than chance.
Personally, I would never EVER voluntarily submit to a polygraph without consulting with an attorney, and I would never take a polygraph for any job, rank or clearance. It's an absolute injustice that the government uses these tests to determine anything... much less who is worthy of protecting our country.

Some security companies and security training centers require u to take a polygraph as well. Even when I provided armed security and executive protection to certain people in aviation industry ((cough drone makers)) I equally hate polygraphs and voice analysis exams.
Yes, as a condition of employment, or if there is a theft issue, security, pharmaceutical and financial institutions can require a polygraph exam.
I took one when I was a LEO for someone who was practicing and I passed it when I was lying about my name. Tester told me it was because I was nervous about being caught in the lie so they are definitely not always accurate

It's not so simple, I was in the final step of being hired on in a federal LEO position and was completely honest in my application screen, then on the poly I was all worried and nervous because a homicide detective friend of mine told me they once had a polygrapher that said five time throughout his career that someone was guilty when the detective proved beyond any doubt that the person was innocent, so after my poly I was so relieved and thought to myself why was I so worried that was not that bad and I knew I had passed with flying colors as I wasn't guilty of any of the things they were concerned with and shift in anyway from the info on my pre poly application/screen, no new information was introduced because I already disclosed everything. Long story short, I got a one sentence email the following week saying I failed and am banned from that agency for life, so yes they do in fact go off the polygraph readings if you are nervous or react in any way even if you are not guilty of that thing or have never done that thing, it's not just about admitting to something verbally...this is a big rumor that I've seen and heard and is false, they will take the actual readings off the device and fail you, if you are a nervous person or have trouble being calm and even find the question and serious nature of the question the least bit jarring or even if you hear the question and understand it's important to passing this test, etc you will react in a normal human way unless you are slightly sociopathic or something. I have found from talking to others that those with no drug history usually fail as they are super suspicious of those individuals and assume going into the test you are a liar and assume everyone has done drugs. After this I lost all respect for the polygraph and for the agent administering my test as well as somewhat for the agency in terms of the implications of those they actually let in and those they keep out, it's a joke of a test and just a way to "cull the heard" of applicants at the final stage. My recommendation is not to roll the dice, if you are very clean cut individual, nervous person when it comes to tests, do not waste a year or two in a pipeline for a job only to be cut at this last stage on a junk machine as laid out in this video. Failing this test also really makes you bitter for a while and messes with your psyche in many ways. Just read all the comments about people who had to take the test multiple times or with many times with different departments here, if a poly was accurate in any way, it would be impossible to fail one time and pass another time with same or similar questions! My polygrapher did everything possible to get the device to fail me in my opinion, he did the walk out for a few minutes, inflated the blood pressure cuff higher on my arm to tourniquet pain levels where my arm was tingling, moved the electrodes on my hands, he clearly thought I was cheating or just wanted to meet some quota of failures to show he was "protecting" the agency from bad applicants or just generally didn't like me and was determined to get some kind of reading to fail me. You've been warned on the poly, it's junk and from 1st hand I can tell you it will fail you even if you are being honest on things depending on your personality.
Later in my hiring process with the CBP, I will be taking one. I’m nervous, but I will tell the truth.

It's an outdated system. My polygrapher tried to get something out of me and looked suspiciously at me just because I've never been in any real trouble, almost to the point where I sorta felt guilty because of it. After the mind games, he passed me.
It's old but it isn't outdated, because people do regularly slip up and lie and are caught in the process of trying to trick the polygraph and lose sight of the big picture. Like he said, the only bad part is if the person conducting the test doesn't know what they are doing, but think they do. Even false rejects work because no one who is told they failed a polygraph thinks they should lie, they are motivated to be more truthful the next time around to pass. That in itself is the magic of it.

I did one for a three letter agency and I'd describe the Lifestyle Poly as 'mind rape'. Seriously. I was told I passed but after all that shit I went through the contract got cancelled. Go figure.

Took one for border patrol. Was honest throughout the whole process, and when it came to the polygraph, I was honest and didn’t lie, but failed. Very sad.
I had to do a retake today for a polygraph. The first time the fire alarm went off, and he told me that I was a Russian Spy...( I wanted to ask if he sees my skin color). When I went to retake it today, he said I did well on the Foreign Affairs/Security questions, but the suitability he told me I was failing the test. He had to move the blood pressure cuff, and the finger monitors to the palm of my hand. He left the room for 5 mins at one point, and came in and asked if i had anything to hide. I said no, he continued the test, and once again asked if had anything to hide. I said no, and then he sent me on my way (the last part was the interview after the polygraph)
