How Facebook is Stealing Billions of Views
Вставка

- Facebook just announced 8 billion video views per day. This number is made out of lies, cheating and worst of all: theft. All of this is wildly known but the media giant Facebook is pretending everything is fine, while damaging independent creators in the process. How does this work?

Hey, Kurzgesagt, can you do a video on P vs NP, or any other of the 7 millennial problems on the clay mathematics institute?
It would be nice if you cover how the blue (f) button, the 'like' button, and facebook comment section also tracks and takes away viewers,
not to mention the intelligence data they collect, record, and catalog on each and every one of YOUR viewers, etc. Not Good. !
Since a lot of people asked: Sharing a video on Facebook is GOOD for the creator if you use a linke to the original Voutube video. In that regard Facebook is a good thing and actually important for us. The bad thing is when people/sites upload videos into the Facebook video player. Sorry that we did not make this clearer. So feel free to share this video on Facebook.

+In a Nutshell - Kurzgesagt : I have a feeling that when you share UA-cam links on Facebook, a lot of those links somehow don't show up on your friends' news feeds which are in "top stories" mode even when the links would be relevant to those friends due to Facebook's "magic" algorithm. I love your videos and also support you guys on Patreon but when I share you videos and get no likes I feel sad that people don't get to see the content you guys create. Can you please make a Facebook page and also upload your videos for the Facebook player ? How to spot a stolen video in Facebook:
1.- Video starts or ends abruptly, with no credits nor intro sequence
2.- Video has a watermark from the facebook page that stole it, and doesn't mention any source in the description
3.- Has two rectangles, one at the bottom and one at the top, with text such as "OMG you wont believe this..."
4.- Overuse of emojis such as "😂", "😮", etc.

7 years later and nothing was essentially ever changed. It's actually gotten worse with the introduction of Tik Tok.
In the last 7 years the definition of fair use has also dramatically changed. Essentially you can steal anything, slightly edit it in 2 minutes and now you're deemed to be using under fair usage. I honestly don't understand how this massive problem just snowballs worse every year and nothing gets done about it. Original, hard-working creators are still suffering the most.
Become a music creator. You'll get 100% of the ad revenue of a video they worked hard on, even if they use only 5 secs of your music. The cool thing is, you can publish it copyright free at first, and change it to content id'd when lots of people are using it! $$$$
@@gersonl and then UMG or some other greedy cunts start claiming all your music and you get nothing.
Meanwhile, FB comes after independent creators using public domain video-clips that have been falsely claimed by larger corporations --- with no ability for the creator to contest the claim, video is simply removed --- at least UA-cam offers the ability to contest false claims and gives us a fighting chance at all.

Facebook, by itself, is one of the darkest parts of the internet.
For instance, the way the Facebook app for mobile devices behaves is quite dubious; it gathers a lot of information from your phone, including text messages and location information that doesn't seem to be tied to how you use the app.
In most cases, this may be regarded as stealing your info. Doesn't matter whether it's legally allowed or not, the process does seem ethically questionable.

This is unbelievably important - and I've been saying stuff like this for years with everyone brushing it off as 'petty'. People have NO idea. It's fucking disgusting. A year ago, I made a goofy little video where I took a children's shark book and voiced over the pictures. Not the most original idea -- it's something a lot of people do, and it was just something that I made in like five minutes with no production value whatsoever just to make a couple friends laugh, but it went on to garner millions and millions of views... all of which are from people that ripped it and uploaded it to their Facebook pages. At first, I didn't think much of it. The video was getting attention, and what made me happy was seeing all the comments from people that really seemed to enjoy it -- sharing it with their friends, saying how it brightened up their day, etc... I was thrilled that a silly little thing like that could do that for people. I didn't mind that my official upload of it only had an extremely small fraction of those views. After a while, though, I started getting a little bitter. I don't make videos in hopes of "getting rich" off of them, I make them because I enjoy it and I love making people smile... but when I realized just how much I missed out on by having all those views go to uploads from other people who stole it, it felt like a huge slap to the face. I realized how much exposure I missed out on, and how much the ad revenue on a video like that could have really helped me out. Again, I can't stress this enough -- I'm not in this for the money, but being able to earn a living off of this stuff is kind of the goal. I know that might sound contradictory, but the reason for that is so I can keep working on creating content full time and not have to rely on working shitty day jobs to pay my bills. With a video as big as this one turned out to be, it totally could have kickstarted all that and helped me get my foot in the door, so to speak. It would have helped me build a larger audience, draw more attention to my other work, and helped make it so that all my time and energy could be applied to doing what I love, and I felt like I was kind of robbed of that.
The biggest slap to the face is that people don't even bother crediting the original creators. I mean, you're stealing their fucking content. The LEAST you could do is throw them a bone, and not doing so just adds insult to injury. What stings the most is that if they truly felt compelled to share something, they could EASILY just share a link to the original upload; it only takes a couple clicks. Instead, they go out of their way to rip the video, be it with a UA-cam video converter or screen capture software, and present that shit as if they had done it. Shit like this needs to stop, and it's pretty upsetting that it likely never will. I've accepted the fact that I missed out on a great opportunity, but it's the principle of the thing that really drives me up the wall. What these people are doing is stealing, and that isn't cool.
+Alexander the Swell I feel for you man, that sounds so crushing :(

This happens to animators constantly. We're already at a disadvantage due to UA-cam's algorithm as it is. Then people on facebook add insult to injury by stealing our content. Facebook has some huge pages to take down. Maybe one day a class action lawsuit will catch up to them, but who knows.
I think that there will be a revolution in the way content is managed and distributed in the nearby future. It's highly likely since more and more people are seeing what really happens.

+Jaltoid Putting your work on youtube is like leaving a basket of apples out by the road and hoping people buy them on the honor system. What's to stop someone from taking them and selling them at their house?
+skatechatham And that's a big problem. If UA-cam actively advertises themselves as a site for original content, and is now leaning in the direction of allowing people to make MONEY from it, they should be putting in effort to make sure it's as hard as possible to steal original content. They can't expect to benefit from the hundreds of hours of work put in by creators and do nothing to protect that work.

Facebook is trying to become UA-cam. If you don't pay to promote your posts, don't expect many views. It's all about money. : (
The main difference between UA-cam and Facebook videos is that on UA-cam you need views to get money, and on Facebook you need money to get views.
And if you do pay, expect to keep paying because most of the people who end up liking your posts are bots that facebook allows to run free. Meaning that your posts will get shared with less people than if you didn't pay.
***** That's very true actually, vsauce did a segment on it
even if you pay for promotion, you'll only get a follow from fake accounts, which results to no real engagement. it's pointless.

Then put an annoying watermark on the video throughout the entire video that's so annoying to remove that it's a waste of time to do it. This could be a semi-transparent overlay covering the entire screen or something in the corner that can only be removed by cutting the video, which would be noticeable since some of the content would be missing.
Or you know... Watermark the intro and then say at the start of the video after the intro: Did you watch the intro?
copyright claim them?
Put a watermark on your video that cannot be removed that says this video cannot be uploaded to facebook and gives the link to the original creator so people can easily call out a thief claiming stolen content
Tiktok: "Finally a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary!"
This 7yer old vid still the truth to this day
It is VERY tempting to re-upload this video on facebook so it will spread better for the facebook audience! How ironic is that?
Anyone who wants this message to spread more rapidly...
+Matthias Wandel There is no need to reupload it, you can simply share it directly from the youtube link it's much faster and of course positive for the original creator of the video.
All of that is true. But if you listened to the video he explained how Facebook algorithms favor native Facebook videos. I'm not saying I'm going to do it. lol. But posting this video natively to Facebook would most certainly be the FASTEST way to raise awareness. I think Matthias Wandel's point was he cares about the issue--and wants as many people as possible to hear about it as soon as possible. And thus it's tempting to use Facebook's clearly-unethical system to more rapidly disseminate the message.
i already shared it on my facebook wall...
+TobisamaAnimation That's the issue. This video currently sits at 1.4 Million views.
If a page with a strong following uploaded it, it would DESTROY the 1.4 M mark in no time.
That's the point, FB videos go way more viral more quicker than YT.
Also, in my country people hate UA-cam because it takes more time to go through a phone browser.
People beg for my videos on Fbook and ignore all YT links I post. FB is completely burying YT every day, week, month. I'm absolutely shocked Google have done nothing about this ? It is directly affecting their ad sales obviously.
Thank you thank you thank you.
+McGoiter YOURE THA MAN, MAN!
+Mostafa Zahran Would take a lawsuit I believe. Unfortunately no creator has the money to go through with it.
0_0 Now your here! How many VERIFIED UA-camrs are here?
Yet more evidence that Facebook needs to be shut down.
You should try sueing them. National regulators have the power to fine Facebook if they deem a platforms response to copyright claims to be insufficient.
The guy who told the joke
THE GUY WHO SAID IT LOUDER
is how this works
True lol
yup
Yep
Happens to me always in class
Oh, I can relate so much.
Deleting my facebook account is a measure I had to take. It makes my life better, friendships more real, and I do not support one of the worst companies in the history of mankind.
Well there's much worse companies that those that steal your views... There's companies that rely on real North Korean slave labor for example.
+FlagArmada Productions It's not about stealing views, it's about selling your private information to third parties (e.g. foreign intelligence). Where else would they get the money from? Those ads that no one clicks on?
+Richard S. Saying no one clicks on them is ~98% untrue. Its the 1-2% click through rate these companies are making bank on. But otherwise, yes, information that people don't bother to withhold is being sold around to advertising companies, and other media companies. I sincerely doubt that any domestic or foreign government intelligence agency gives a shit about anyone's Amazon purchasing data... Also, as bad as Facebook undoubtedly is I really think you are over stating when you say "one of the worst companies in the history of mankind." and are overlooking a lot of other extremely terrible companies and institutions ran like companies.
+Nokty Well, perhaps I am overlooking many companies in the history, but facebook is quite a horrendous case. To me it seems like an infection of the internet. Perhaps I'm wrong, it's just that I strongly dislike the webpage and the whole culture associated with it (rampant narcissism and having less friends might be things that facebook hugely contributed to with its huge social impact, dont forget how many users it has). And the way Zuckerberg managed to get the hold of the company is also just plain disgusting. Happy to see we agree. :)
Richard S.
But is having less friends necessarily a bad thing? I mean, what's wrong with being a little more introverted?
Great video, I stopped going to Facebook years ago to look at my feed, I sometimes look at a few groups but that is it, Facebook should be barred from video content until they get their s... together!
I love how Kurzgesagt just straight up made a video exposing Facebook after having their video stolen
This is why, facebook is considered one of the worst Social Media nowadays, while youtube is still pretty popular
ouh belive me, FB? they aren't even on the same PLAINE as TikTok
@Vinnie Hatcher or else?
@Vinnie Hatcher to be fair that shit is already on this site, have you seem those garbage "shorts" youtube has been pedalling?
Facebook: Where people that are on level 1000 on candy crush steal content
Twitter: You get cancelled for having an opinion
TikTok: Literal cancer
Instagram: Where misleading information is spread using stories
@@Pihsrosnec Glad I'm not the only one that hates that format
Truth has been told, youtubers are with you :-)
Fuck Facebook say this and Facebook Will die
+Michał Kozłowski Is that you in a Marine suit? I had similar idea to make one like that before xD
Neat c:
+Michał Kozłowski Yes we are!
reddit is so much better
+19Nightwing91 yep :-) thx!
Crazy that 7 years later, this is still a problem and nothing has been done about it to protect creators.
i love so much the bird animations and everything you post its like so amazing
These days, this phenomenon has shifted from Facebook to *TikTok*
Stealing content will always be easier than creating it
And then back to UA-cam in the form of shorter videos
Actually Facebook has millions of videos related to content stealing, it's one of those videos that has a Google voice actor and a movie and a noisy background music that is also stolen
Same thing different app
Both
Plot twist: this video was also shared on facebook and went viral
Oh shoot
I guess in this case it is a positive? Maybe it will let some people know they are harming somebody by just watching videos on FB.
Crap crap crap
Isn't this the point. I'm posting this to inform viewers. I will never post anything else though.
That would be good though
I watched all ur videos in the last years! This one was very informative and refreshing ❤❤❤

+In a Nutshell - Kurzgesagt i know its not your festival, but happy diwali kurzgesagt.your videos are awesome as always
So.. Should I start commenting the original link of the videos I find in facebook?
+In a Nutshell - Kurzgesagt So are you talking about people who take the video and then re upload on Facebook and claim it as their own? Or are you talking about people linking/sharing UA-cam video's on Facebook?
+In a Nutshell - Kurzgesagt Coincidentally I saw this week a copy of the "addiction" video and mentioned you guys in the comments (it was a brazilian page).
Facebook is cheesing!
+Chris Smoove What this heck Chris, when did you get to this part of youtube?
+Chris Smoove Smoove be spreading awareness lol
Chris smoove's commenting? "Is this a fake comment"?
+Chris Smoove Damn cuh you far out man. A man of the world, for sure.
+Chris Smoove Splash that like button
This man could be calm to the planet being literally exploded into bits, but not to facebook.
Great information! Now I know to put watermarks in my videos, logos and video games! Helps alot.
Fantastic video. Thanks for raising awareness, would be nice if someone developed a plugin to block FB videos!
+Rombo It's always amusing to see UA-camrs comment on each others content, isn't it?
And Xisumvoid, great stuff, my gf loves your vids!
+xisumavoid Bot comments? Fucking pathetic.
+xisumavoid Nice to see you here, xisuma!! I love you. What would be best tho is if everybody deleted their facebook account!
+xisumavoid You can turn off facebook video autoplay in the settings!
I just saw you on a film theory video a minute ago you're everywhere!! i've been watching you since just before xisumas world started!
Now Facebook seems even more evil.
you mean like a cancer right?
^ Why not use Twitter D:?
yeah, twitter allows you and prefers youtube over others
FB is utter shit. I use discord to talk to friends.
Alex Landherr yep
World is full of successful thief's, how many people profit from other's work and dedication... Nice exposure mate... I'll do my best, how many people get compromised by this...
really hope facebook and all its sub companies would just go out... your content is gold!
1 million to 15 million in just over 5 years. You go Kurzgesagt!
Clippity clap clap
Deserved.
@@mechacrimson8991 yeah but still not enough compared to their work 16 millions is way to small
15 million +1
That's nothing compared to dream, he gained 15 million sub in 1 year
Me: "Man that sucks, Kurzgesagt. Stealing sucks."
*checks on how far my torrents have downloaded*
XD yeah
Also 100th like

that's sad, yet I also do the same thing, so I'm sad.
Facebook in 2015: steals video
Facebook in 2022 : steals your info, data, home address, size of your appendages brain size what kind of boxes you have in your house? What kind of postal orders are on your wall and the exact type of tree and age in front of your house.
