The real tragedy is all of the kids who were denied into these schools that had legit test scores because some dopey kid of a rich parent got in because of a bribe.
@M J Grasscutter Ah yes... Taking a story that is about wealth divides and the ultra rich's ability to deprive hard working students of their positions in school, and making it about race... Go screw yourself. You want to make this about race? Notice that these very real instances of people being pushed out of a chance at college by lazy and entitled people, all happen to be done by white people. Truth is, this has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with wealth disparity and the lack of accountability of the ultra rich.
It's almost like... you can't rely on some bullshit piece of paper to pretend someone is smart anymore, you just have to find out yourself through hard work and searching. HOW UNFORTUNATE for the corporate machiiiine! FINDING talent rather than asking for it's passport!
I’m glad Kurzgesagt was able to respond to the criticism so fast, most of their uploads are awesome, it’s unfortunate some of their earlier videos don’t live up to what they’ve become, but it’s great seeing them acting so openly and answering complaints transparently.
@@absolstoryoffiction6615 they never blamed anyone but themselves. They said that _they_ didn't do enough research, and _they_ were making a somewhat emotional response to an event in the world. I don’t have cancer, but I have a brain tumor and I have testing and treatments that go on for about the longevity of chemo treatments do. During hospital days I’m always in my phone. Whether that be texting, answering emails or catching up on school work. It takes two seconds to be like “ hey sorry I have treatment can we please talk when I feeling better” also the fact that he listed chemo as third almost makes it seem like he’s making excuses. Obviously I don’t know his life, but I know from being chronically ill that emails that say gimme a minute I’m sick. Take seconds
Chrisnia Y my mom is on chemo and when she gets it she can be in bed for days sleeping. She doesn’t even want to look at her phone. If the message came during the days he was resting after chemo it is an acceptable excuse. Chemo reacts differently to everyone. You may be able to get your dose and be fine the next day while some may be out of it for up to a week.
I’m so tired of college being a pay-to-win experience. There are kids who sacrifice their teen years or even earlier practicing sports, participating in service clubs, and struggling to maintain average grades just to have the ability to study what they want to do with their lives. Not to mention the mental health risks these kids forego by pulling allnighters and maintaining an almost permanent anxiety-ridden state keeping track of test scores and deadlines. I’ve never been the top of my class, but I’ve maintained a 4.0 throughout my highschool career. Regardless, due to spots being filled and finances never really being an option for me, I’m attending a community college with the hope to transfer. It makes me so upset that the work I’ve put in these last for years are going to be completely disregarded in favor of a brat who has a heavy credit card. The competitive environment these colleges have is simply too much, and I sincerely hope this story is an eye opener for many willing to start that conversation
Community college first was a good decision. Four year university's are over rated and you can get two quality years of college at a fraction of what a four year would charge you, but I understand what you mean non the less.
As someone currently going through the applocation process (and having a hit to my mental health for it) these rich kids getting in just because their parents have money is a massive slap in the face
Dude, you have to thank yourself for starting out in community college. You have less to pay back, it's a smarter decision. That being said, I still agree with you.
I think that's why I got so mad at that story. My family is not rich. They told me that I would have to work to go to college. I stay up later than others, wake up earlier, to study, do projects get ahead. Then some girl who wants to party at college gets to take my place?!
Like others have said, 2 years at a community college is a good thing. You're saving tens of thousands that otherwise would have been loans. I'm finishing up my final semester of community college right now, even though I could have gotten into dozens of colleges. I have no debt and my GPA resets once I go to a 4 year. Best decision I could have made.
Holy shit me too. When I saw the video explaining their process now it felt kinda nowhere, but actually felt cool because I wasn't wrong about trusting them. And when I saw the title I thought "holy shit what now?"
I don't really think he was just targeting kurzgesagt, but the pop science problem. Cramming so much information in a short video and how it leads to mis information. If he wanted to bash him, he would not have made an attempt to even get a response or wait for one, but just made a video bashing phillipp.
@@jeronimuspompeus624 if that was the case he wouldnt open his video targeting that one youtube channel. he woul dhave opening discussing it and that would have just been one example. he cleary saw a chance to beat someone else down to bring him up.
@@ge2719 we dont know of kurzgesagt was the only channel he was targeting. It was however the channel that he felt mistreated him. If you would want to make a gotcha video you would just do it, not make a case for how pop science leads to mis information. I do however think his reaction video is bitter and childish. But if anything he says is true, so is the way kurzgesagt handled it. Still love kurzgesagt though, don't get me wrong. really like the content they create.
It's a UA-cam kid trying to get his view across, and get ads, versus a UA-cam channel trying to educate the world about science. I am a bit conflicted, because both should be on this platform.
Kurzesagt has around 130 videos far as I can tell, it's not a big deal that 2 had some errors. This is purely drama because the guy couldn't get his scoop and now is bitter about it, so he did what he had to do to get some content, start some drama. People are throw around the words ethics around a lot, it's not that big of a deal that when a person feels like people have complaints they try to address it themselves rather then going individually through every person who might have a bone to pick with them. But then those people will all be salty they didn't let them get a slice of the pie, which is ultimately all they want.
It's a little more than 2, which is one of the reason I unsubbed from him 2-3 years go, however his content has been improving since those bad/misinformed videos and has improved as a creator as a whole. A worse offender of misinformation is unfortunately Crash Course and Hank Green (mainly though unintentionally biases), it happens especially when you're working with such a huge production crew. I don't fault him however it does mean I unsubbed from them.
and kurzgesagt even admitted that they weren't proud of the addiction video, that it wasn't properly researched 😂 man why do some people try to hit a science channel that is just trying to make the world a little smarter.
@@h3llblaz3r12 Watching Kurzgesat's video, I think there are other videos he's not happy with, but he selected to use the Addiction and Refugee videos as examples and the two videos he removed because they're two of their most popular videos of all time and continue to be. There are probably others the team and especially Phillip aren't satisfied with, but those two have the potential to be the most damaging because of the information presented and they continue to be very popular. As far as the situation in general, I do think Stephen did the video the way he did because he ended up being butthurt. I could see Stephen wanting to do the video as calling Phillip and the Kurzgesat team out if it wasn't for the fact he seemed to very heavily misrepresent what Phillip had written in his emails,
I think Olivia and these other rich kids should get the true college experience of crying in the bathroom of your minimum wage job because you are tired and hungry because you had to stay up for 40 hours working and studying for 5 midterms and because you had to choose a textbook over food.
Omg I remember crying so hard during my work breaks because I was so exhausted from working 6pm-2am shifts and studying to going to class till 3pm only to do the same shift again and schedule for 5 days a week
God this was me every week last semester. Like the "college experience" of partying and getting drunk in a dorm really only exists for people with money.
Great research sure, but the breakdown was horrible. He took a side like a true modern day journalist: He did that from the get go by calling it a "Hit piece" this taking Kurzgesagt side. Its easy to see that the story goes as follows: one UA-camr trying to ride on anothers UA-camrs back, and as a result the other one tries to cover their ass. Both negative but human things to do.
It is quite true that he did nothing legelly wrong in the situation he did get in the face of the kid and was adgitating the situation and moving into a conflict. Also lied about facts in interviews
@@DavidWasman your right. He did however do something wrong afterwards where he actively spread false information about the situation to the media re: build the wall chants that never happened, that the kids started the situation etc. However during the actual encounter with the students he did not do anything wrong
If you make as many videos as they have you're gonna have mistakes, if 2 videos were poorly done it shouldn't take away from all the other work they've done. If we count the amount of times Phil has talk'd about a story without having done the proper research it's definitely way more than 2.
Going into this I was a fan of both channels, so don’t think I’m blindly hating Coffee Break because it’s what everyone else is doing, but I am really disappointed in CB.
As a poor kid who had to work his way through college and graduate schools I wanted to believe the system was fair. Of course, I was always at a disadvantage because I had to work from the age of twelve (paper route, brutal job that) and was never able to afford SAT prep. classes, etc. I still believed in my abilities and did better than 90% of the higher income kids despite their advantages. Yet I always suspected something was amiss. As an adult I would run into people from prestigious colleges who clearly weren't that smart. Sometimes affirmative action programs were the culprit but some cases appeared to be a mystery. Now I know. As much as I didn't want to believe it, the books were cooked all along.
Nathan Cortez I disagree, of course there’s no legal ramifications, but if you don’t want to be called out for something, then you should be transparent.

Coffee Break made an OOPSIE! Actually I’m a fan of his videos usually... but he took this personally and made a hostile video that ultimately made him look worse... Philip did nothing wrong. Good job covering this Phily D!

@@angusmarch1066 Not in the slightest. If you actually read the emails and watch the video he made afterwards (the one about the limitations of pop science), it's clear that he wasn't specifically attempting to go after Kurtzgesagt but was using the one video as an example for his overall theme. His intention was not to call out Kurtzgesagt but instead to show how mistakes can be made within the genre itself, which he includes himself in. Coffee Break didn't need to contact Kurztgesagt. He did so in order to get more information from him, and he contacted Hari as well, which further changed his opinion on the entire point of the segment of the video he was intending to make. He was genuinely looking for more information and explaining in detail what his video was about. I freely admit that while I think in hindsight Coffee Break's intentions are completely clear, they most likely weren't at the time. Even with the amount of detail he went into in explaining the video he was attempting to make, a misunderstanding is still understandable (I hate to phrase it that way, but you get my point). I think Dettmer could have done better to be more open to Stephen about what was going on before posting the video, but I don't particularly blame him for anything. Where Stephen screwed up was his reaction to all this. And he admitted so. He was angry that Kurtzgesagt seemingly sought to get in front of Coffee Break's video, and whether that was true or not (in all likelihood, it wasn't, and was more of just a coincidence of timing), Stephen should never have reacted in that way. And he knows it. This was clearly just miscommunication between two content creators that got out of hand, with Coffee Break making a video he never should have made, and then apologizing about it. The worst part of this whole drama is how unnecessary it was, as Coffee Break's eventual video about pop science was quite good, and didn't need to reference Kurtzgesagt at all. He was able to make his points clearly and effectively without specifically including any references to that video. He even gave Hari credit for what his book said in relation to his TED talk. People looking to take down others for clout don't operate like this. It was a rare mistake by one of the better content creators on UA-cam, and he completely owned up to it.
@@angusmarch1066 Why did you even bother to respond to me if you couldn't be bothered to read it? I'm just curious. Because your reply wasn't in any way helpful nor was it funny.
Not to mention that Kurzgesagt videos usually take months to create.... It’s a coincidence that he wanted to do a video just when Philipp had already the same thing in the works. Like chill out Stephen
It takes months because they don't have a clear deadline and have no reason to rush. Now, because he id being question, he does have a deadline and needed to rush the video :)

Kurzgesagt vs. Coffee Break drama can be summed up as: "I wanted to gain clout by making a negative hitpiece on Kurzgesagt but they beat me to the punch by owning up to their mistakes and now I'm mad that I couldn't be the one to expose them." Coffee Break deliberately withheld the full email exchange and twisted it to be as negative as possible. It's clear from his response that he wasn't genuinely interested in truth and honesty, but in drama.
I love Kurzgesagt! I am a recovering addict, and did not agree with their addiction video. But that never detracted from how amazing I think their channel is!
You're a scientist in the making. Always skeptical, but if the proof is there then it is. kurzgesagt made a video in 2015 and as science goes, it is always and forever changing with newer studies to build off the old ones. I'm sure kurzgesagt's new addiction video will have updated science, and be one of their best yet.
The addiction video may not be the whole story but it is a great video that takes a different look than most. I am no scientist, but as an addict myself I think this perspective has a lot of merit and can be very helpful to those struggling. Those who are overlooking the fact their surroundings are a huge part of who they are and what they do. Changing those surrounding is undoubtedly helpful in recovery.
@@davidobryan9383 that video was never based on science, in fact it was never based on Johan här work either , did you even watch the video.. Kurzgesagt made a video of complete misinformation.
Addiction really is purely psychological and dependent on your surroundings. The backlash you’re seeing to this truth is similar to what the science community experienced when the idea of multiple genders was first being discussed. People who agree with the notion that addiction is not psychological are trying to shift the blame onto the drugs themselves for their self destructive behavior, whilst overlooking the fact that it was them who decided to use the drugs in the first place. The very first dose that lead to addiction was a conscious decision made by the individual who was privileged enough to be in a surrounding with drugs readily available to fuel their addiction.
I dont think Stephen is a drama seeker. Personally I think he just misunderstood and overreacted a bit. This whole situation looks like a textbook example of the "Aggression-Spiral". Stephen did not trust Philipp (and vice versa) and so both misinterpreted the statements of the other. Both could have been more trusting of the other person. Philipp could've said something about the video and Stephen could have been less of a "Drama queen". (Although I will admit that Stephen should have been less bias). They both thought the Actions of the other were in malicious intend and acted accordingly, but in doing so made themselves look less trustworthy.
@@ge2719 no he didn't, but no one ever said he did... Just to be clear: I'm not saying that Philipp is in the wrong here, in fact I agree, Stephens video seems like a bit of an overreaction. All i'm saying is that Stephen doesn't really deserve the amount of hate that he gets.
Maybe, then educational videos on youtube just arn't really good. Yeah, the production quality is great. But 1)Half of the time now, the channel is just about personal opinions or even political nonsense. That's not education. We have dedicated shows for that. I watch them. A lot. When I want to. 2)I am not superimpressed with Kurzgesagts response to the criticism of their shortcomings. They might honestly try to minimize bias, but they don't really understand what causes bias. It's a high school level and below idea of what science is. Method is important, but it's not a failsafe.
@@gabrielonibudo5710 in the right for what? Misrepresenting an email conversation? Being a hypocrite? Or maybe it was that he just didnt respond to the interview that he wanted in the first place
The whole kurzgesagt thing is dumb. Sure he made mistakes, everyone does. People like over simplification to help them to wrap their head around a complex topic and help get some insight about it. Most people who watch videos like this may spread the information, but it's not like they are doing scientific research with the misinformation acquired from a youtube video. I think he was the bigger person by standing up and openly admitting that he was wrong on his channel where the information is actually consumed. It's exactly what you said, a small time youtuber trying to ride someone else's fame and career to the top.
Kurzgesagt did not put his best foot forward. Namely, he should have either rejected the interview or mentioned the video he was creating. While he is not required to do so, it removes the possibility of any dubious intentions that coffee proclaims. That's his only real issue though and otherwise he handled this pretty well. Coffee's mistakes are more numerous. Kurzgesagt's biggest concern was that Coffee's video was a "gotcha" video al la "youtube cop" and he wasn't interested in dealing with the drama those videos bring. While coffee's video on Pop Science would have been an interesting topic, he handled it so bloody poorly. He could have springboard off of Kurzgesagt's video by using it as a positive example of Pop science's biggest problems being addressed. Instead, he comes off pissed and betrayed. Its quite clear that while his video may not have meant to be a "gotcha" video, it was going to exploit his reputation in a click baity fashion.
@NotSpecialDude, that's not how things work in the real world. In the real world when ever someone or some company finds out that something negative is going to come out they try to get ahead of the report. It's natural because they want to put forth the best message and with Stephen appearing to be making a hit piece Kurzgesagt was right to move forward with a piece they had underway already.
@@NotSpecialDude while I generally agree that Kurz was not as transparent with Stephen as they could have been they were still far more transparent with their viewers than most others have ever been. And I'm not surprised that Kurz wasn't completely transparent with Stephen as they suspected he was creating a hit piece. That may or may not have been Stephen's original intention, but Kurz wouldn't have known that from their perspective. They were being cautious.
@@nanoflower1 Like I said, Kurz did pretty alright all things considering. My point is he should not have left the interview on the table. Because he left him there waiting, Stephen legitimately wasted his time waiting. Assuming he wasn't doing a hit piece, he could have interviewed someone else and got more things done instead of waiting 2 weeks only to find out the other party went out and got ahead of HIS story. That all that study and research into addiction was pointless because the lynchpin of that topic prematurely pulled the trigger and blew the load early. Stephen is a victim. Hes just really, REALLY bad at handling this like an adult. He's acting like an incredibly bitter child and is clearly having a hard time bouncing back or moving on. Like I said before, he could still make his pop sciences video. It would just have different players in it, and take a little longer then before to make. Thus my neutral stance leaning slight towards kruz.
@420Praiseit Gitgudneosucksasstoo I watched both videos, read the email, watched this and read a bit of what's going on on reddit, and I'll have to agree with ThiefKingofLegend. Btw, just because someone doesn't share your point of view doesn't mean that they haven't seen the videos you have.
On the college admission scandal, it sounds to me like they're punishing the players and not the game. The schools' admission programs, admission staff, and the third party testing companies (that are already bullshit) need to be held fully accountable for facilitating this criminal activity.
doleph1 I have to agree. Those institutions hold so much power, and they should be held accountable this. A lot of people are angry at the children involved in this, but it’s the adults who knew better and did it anyway.
Don't even get me started on student athletic programs. In specific, football. They break every damn rule they can in the name of a winning season. Hardly ever a peep on that...... Oh and the NCAA is tax exempt somehow.
This. The fact that being eyed as an athletic recruit has bearing on admission into an academic institution is the flaw here. Cheating on a test shows a lack of integrity and that's upsetting. But I have a hard time being mad at people who were admitted on the pretense of athleticism. That athletes (especially in non-revenue-generating sports) are prioritized over students is nonsense.
Fucking exactly. Seriously if parents are the ones actually ending up with serious consequences here this will be a massive failure. People will work harder to do it in secret and people at the top will still make money out of it. Fix the system and go after the College people who made money out of this! Honestly, while I personally find it a terrible thing to do, you can easily imagine parents doing it with the best of intentions. They're simply using their own money to help their kid get the best future possible, probably out of love (for at the very least some of them). I mean honestly ask yourselves how many of you wouldn't at the very least consider doing this for your kid if you knew you could and it would have virtually no consequences? How many of your parents would?
CoqPwner i dont want to raise a spoiled kid that gets everything handed to them. I would organise a great tutor for them help them study and support them all the way. But I wouldn’t support them cheating. What kind of a message is that for the kid? If you cheat you can achieve everything you want? I’d rather teach my children the value of hard work and dedication.
I graduated last year and saw so many hard working kids who applied to UCLA not get in, even though they had done everything right. Now I'm sure finding out that their spot at the university of their dreams might've been taken by some rich brat whose parents paid to get them in must be heartbreaking.
This has always been the case tho. If those kids were truly smart, they would have already known that there's a possibility that might occur and not take admissions too seriously.

If you actually spend a second to look at Coffee Breaks other videos it becomes painfully obvious why he did this. The channel obviously caters to the same 'edutainment' audience kurzgesagt has, but with much less production quality(using movie/cartoon clips and pictures instead of selfmade animations) and does pretty much the same thing, but just on random topics + sometimes with much less journalistic integrity. (Example#1 Clickbait -> 'Why Cops Beat You In The Interrogation Room' Example#2 covering UA-cam Topics instead of Science -> Pewdiepie vs. T-Series). Also I will never trust people who put scary horror music under blurred e-mails, trying super hard to make it seem like some sort of super clever bust, when in reality he also misrepresented the blurred e-mails in his video. Also the whole 'small guy vs. big guy' thing is just disgusting. He is just reaching for an emotional high ground by trying to make people feel like he is fighting some sort of big unfair player as a small and humble 'good guy'.
Cothy how exactly is his interrogation room video clickbait? He goes pretty into depth on the methods cops use to interrogate people and he does so in a fairly entertaining way. I also don’t see an issue with covering topics like T-Series vs PewDiePie, as he never claimed to be a science channel. While I’m definitely not on his side in the Kurz situation, I don’t think it’s fair to discredit the rest of the guy’s content because of it
@@AlwayzHilarious I did not intent to discredit his content completely, but it is very obvious his content is way more on the entertainment side of things and not journalistic/scientific in nature.
I totally agree with the horror music. The moment I hear it I immediately distrust the video for trying to manipulate my feelings, while the video should be fact based and not feeling based.
Half as interesting/ wendover productions does the same format but in better quality, it's the quality of the content that matters not the type of content
- Coffee Break: "Hey Kurzgesagt, i have some issues with your content!" - Kurzgesagt: "Ok, we will address these issues and change accordingly." - Coffee Break: "NOOO!! I wanted to be outraged and create a shitstorm! Why don't you just ignore my request so i can be relevant!" So funny :D It's like when someone tells you that your house is on fire and that he called the fire department. And then he gets outraged that you extinguished the fire yourself instead of letting your house burn down so he can feel like a hero. :D
No Kurzgesagt portrayed it as it was their own personal research that realised that their previous videos had been wrong, and not explaining that it was external criticism that caused them to remove the videos. This is proven by Phillipp making the same mistake in this "update" video
@@gabrielonibudo5710 Do you know how long it takes to animate such a long video? It must've been already in the works, otherwise it couldn't have been released by that date.
Very much so, CoffeeBreak intentionally phrases so much to make it specifically about himself. The Addiction video was criticised since day one, and reveal of the actual email shows this. Add the crappy horror backtrack and lying via omission. Kurtz didn’t want to feed a callout video and they’re proven right. Stephen is view fishing plain and simple.
Of course he's not, and I'm surprised that's all you could conclude from this ordeal. His intentions were probably malicious, but from his perspective, it looked like Kurzgesagt stole Coffee Break's questions and used them for a video as a form of damage control. He even elaborated on how he felt like this was a case of how big channels feel like they can screw over smaller ones, which is exactly why he reacted the way that he did. Things were took things out of context and proportion, but literally everyone does when they feel like they're bring exploited and we see it all the time, especially on this channel. Yes, Kurzgesagt should have told Coffee Break about their idea for the Trust video, and yes, Coffee Break should have kept the narrative closer to the whole truth. What we don't need are people like you taking a side rather than taking something from the story, with my personal takeaway being that the liability of truth falls upon the consumer of media in the end; Kurzgesagt themselves admit that their videos can be oversimplified to the point of being misleading, so we should not take their content as the whole entire truth. Observing the action and reaction on Coffee Break's end, we should just try to communicate clearer with each other if we want to come to an understanding. Both channels make good videos, it's just that neither are made of perfect people.
Yackamajez, you should really follow the news and not rely on one source. The reason for the 1420 is, her previous score was very low and it was believed that if she showed too great of an improvement, it would raise suspicions and so, the 1420 was agreed upon. It's intended to show a great improvement on her part but not too great as to raise questions.

Beor Eviols yeah it’s a bunch of bs (I know I am going through it). I luckily got into community college and transferred out and I have no debt and in my third year of college with a full time IT job. So I planned things out alright.

Beor Eviols 1) agreed. 2) and that is has become less about the product (the education) and more about the brand. Like Mr. Defranco says...it’s more about the whole college network that is a problem and this is just a side effect of the unnecessary expensive education complex. Kind of easy to see why it’s discouraging for low income people not wanting to go to college and why it’s easy for high income people (olivia jade) have little to no approximate for college, let alone highly established universities. The whole thing feels gilded. (Sorry for the rant.) kind of frustrating.

Coffee Break scandal “in a nutshell”: Smaller UA-camr seeks attention by making drama where there isn’t any in order to build their own audience. Pretty pathetic. Stephen should be ashamed.
Or smaller channel who asked for a interview but instead of being denied had their time wasted because a larger channel didnt want any bad press and took a smaller channels idea
In these types of videos with dramatic music playing in the background, you know you're waiting to hear for the drop: The stop of the dramatic music for the heavy hitting one-sentence conclusion. After I heard him whining about Kurzgesagt taking his views, I realized that this guy did nothing but steal 10 of my minutes. The video was clickbait in and of itself. I thought it was going to be a compelling argument as to why these "simplification" videos are harmful to those who watch them. Not a childish "me vs them" type video. Petty.
@@adamsfusion did you ever saw the comments sections of kurz videos (as Defranco said) ? like, there is this idea that Coffee break was groundbreaking... come on.
@@adamsfusion yeah and all it really cost Stephen was any real credibility on his part, coming off as immature as he did. The way he paraphrased those emails were especially infuriating.
500k just to get into a college as an ATHLETE! 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ These kids don’t need to work a day in their lives why do they want to go to IVY colleges? Just to get the experience, so they don’t feel left out?? They can easily afford the best tutors and not worry about tuition so they have all the time to study if they really want to gain knowledge. Otherwise they should just print a diploma with their names and a famous university and avoid wasting space for students who want to learn and put the work to get there.
It's about prestige, my dude. You probably don't get it cuz you're broke or middle class. Prestige (more specifically family prestige) takes you a long way in the rich community.
Parents would rather be able to brag to their friends about how their kids got into "whatever" school, "Look at how awesome MY kid is and, what an amazing parent I am for raising them to be sooo awesome". If they had done a half-way decent job of raising them, to begin with, they wouldn't have had to buy them their way into an education. It's as much to cover up their lack of parenting as much as anything else.
I followed the kurzgesagt story as it unfolded, and it was immediately apparent to me that Coffee Break was in the wrong. If he was planning a video about pop science, then Philipp's video shouldn't have curbed that at all. If anything, it would've helped Stephen's video by providing a positive example. It's clear to me that Stephen was just planning a gotcha video on kurzgesagt to publicly shame him.
However Kurzgesagt didn't disclose in his update video that it was external criticism that caused him to delete the videos he portrays it as being their own "internal" research, this is proven by them making the same mistake they made in the first video in this first one.
@@gabrielonibudo5710 alot of people keep missing that part, I find it astonishing, with all the people supporting him, goes to show how fanboyism can lead to people astray. Maybe I'm being a pessimist, but hasn't this been going on for decades? Not complaining that this is getting major attention, because it's a big issue, but I am super surprised this is still making headlines after the first hour it broke. Maybe because it involved celebrities.
No its because of your first line. These things have been going on for pretty much as long as higher education existed. That's why its such a big deal that something is actually being done about it. Now being pessimistic would be like me and thinking its maybe only because the people involved here weren't important enough (like the backdoor ppl) or fell into someone's bad books (maybe even because said backdoor people thought they were stepping on their toes) and this was the punishment.
Are you possibly thinking of alumni who donate millions of dollars directly to the school to get their kids into school (aka the "backdoor way" mentioned by what's-his-face the scammer)? That definitely has been going on for decades and imo is equally disgusting. Not to say rich alumni can't use their money how they please, but doing it with the intent to get your child into a school they otherwise wouldn't is ridiculous. (Tangent, but I'm also just salty about alumni donations because I went to undergrad at a school with probably one of the top 10 worst football programs in D1, yet certain alumni would throw money at the football team when our academics were struggling for funding while also complaining about the lack of student support for the football team.)
@@capri1722 yea kind of, I also see them as equally terrible for taking up spots for academically deserving students. To an outsider, they both look pretty illegal to me. And to your tangent, I had a similar situation with my school. I went to an HBCU and nearly all of the donations from alumni went to our marching band, when our band had plenty of money and weren't struggling by any means, when it could've gone elsewhere in the school. Alumni care more about being able to claim their "school pride" than actually bettering future students who will go through the school. I guess, a library wing _is_ better than a 6th pair of uniforms for the football team that no one cares about. (Also that those athletes can't even get a cent of that unnecessary amount of donations, but that's completely different tangent on itself)
No you are not. It has bee happening, now there is factual proof. We all know theres alot of trust fund kids who dont care because they are always going to be okay because $$. I just wonder how far will the investigation go because this has been going for decades. And if they do will the redact those past diplomas.

Imagine the kids who ACTUALLY cared about doing well in school suddenly finding out they're only in their favorite college because their parents secretly paid their way in. That's gotta be soul crushing for some of them, also the fact their parents might be serving jail time lol Edit: I'm gonna guess most didn't know as their parents did try to cover it up a lot. And that since they're spoiled, they likely don't have good investigative skills.
That would be devastating. Talk about losing trust, serif confidence and you can probably add "being bullied online" to that, because half of the internet won't believe that you really cared.
i think the kids had to know, because they were participating in the process, like taking the SAT a 2nd time in a separate location, with someone helping, etc. the kids likely knew everything
Like shit, I got a second consideration for entrance to my nursing school because my dad knows a big admin guy, and even that was conditional that I took and aced like a shit ton of pre-requisite courses in the summer before it started (originally rejected because they weren’t done). Of course I kicked ass that summer and now I’ve been a working nurse for a while, but even now sometimes the crippling feeling of “Maybe I didn’t actually earn it? Maybe I’m really not good enough? I know I worked hard but I feel like a fraud” comes back around. So yeah, I would feel immensely horrible about myself if that happened.
Yeah it’s pretty pitiful his response of “hey no fair you can’t call yourself out, I was going to call you out first! You ruined my video that was going to be huge! You’re the bad person in this scenario!”
Im Batman Sorry but no. At the very least ‘in a nutshell’ undermined wholly any integrity held by a smaller creator. The response elicited was appropriate.
Does anyone agree that this whole ordeal with the college scams is one of the main reasons colleges in the US in its current state is a huge joke? It’s overpriced, the student loan business is itself a huge scam (except they usually get away with it), and it’s not quite as necessary as it was 20 years ago given how easy it is to obtain information on the internet. This reminds me of those Black Friday door buster videos where people trample over each other and fight each other over flat screen TVs. All it does is bring out the inner greed of people and it’s just plain stupid to be honest. 🤦🏻♂️
Plus with the advent of online learning and the increasing recognition of online certification, you can very much not at all depend on a college degree to get a job.

Kurzgesagt is one of the classiest channels on UA-cam. I put them on the same level as Hank Green's videos. Thank you truly Phil for such a objective view.
Kurzgesagt is nice because they combine science, philosophy, and cute animations. I was subbed to them a long time ago, before they had several million followers.

I think the students should be expelled. I know they say their kids “don’t know” but if you allow them to stay, and the parents eventually plead guilty and pay a fine to avoid jail, all you did is say this is how you get your idiot child into our school. Also, I think the Federal government needs to require absolute transparency on elite schools and their admission process. It needs to be tied to getting federal funds. That will change their ways real quick.
As long as the kids are performing adequately academically i don't see how expelling them gains anything. If they weren't complicit in the cheating and lying then they are as much victims. They have to live with the fact that they are there because of a lie, it probably ruins their reputation aswell.
Once the students are attending, as long as they are doing what needs to be done to stay, I don't see a reason to expel them. Especially when some of them didn't even know their parents did it.
Most of the elite schools in the country are private universities so they don't get federal funds. That's why their tuition is so high. Of the schools Phil mentioned, only UCLA is a public school.
Science is not as clear cut as some might think. It happens that a theory might get disproven down the line, but until then is bevlieved by many. Nonetheless it takes a lot of courage to admit the mistakes made and openly display them, especially in our times now. More often then not, people just double down.
Yeah but Kurz often doesn't do the basic research and just repackages pop science and ted talks more often than not. Look at Kurz's UBI video for instance, he makes repeated claims that are easily disprovable such as "no money enters the economy". For non political examples, almost every time he brings up black holes he gets something incorrect. There are times where he does get stuff right on the money, such as CRISPR, but by and large I completely avoid him now due to his very low standards.

No scientific theory has been disproven for over 100 years. Is it possible that they can be disproven? Yes. Its kind of misleading you're mentioning it changes when it hasn't in over 100 years. I think you're using lay terminology when you say theory, you should try to avoid that.
Philip from Kurzgesagt handled the situations exceedingly well with incredible transparency and integrity; this is how you deal with ANY controversial and I absolutely applaud them for how honest, genuine, and transparent they are and how they address their own standards for themselves. "Should you trust Kurzgesagt" is the standard that every youtuber should uphold themselves to. Honest writing, acknowledging and fixing mistakes, and transparent process. Coffee Break is just being a toxic drama troll and is upset he didn't get to run a smear campaign like he hoped; he doesn't deserve any traffic due to this "controversial" and instead should applaud Kurzgesagt for answering his questions and owning up their mistakes and creative process. The fact that Coffee Break is being so upset truly shows that he planned to run a smear campaign hit piece and cared more about clickbait than actual integrity. He should be happy.

Then he released a video where he answers your questions which you were supposed to ask in an interview. He doesn't mention you anywhere in that video.
I love Kurzgesagt but as I commented under that video the day it dropped, my trust is tentative and based on the quality of their content. The video itself is an amazingly honest admission of what they feel they've gotten wrong and how they are correcting those errors moving forward. More UA-camrs should be that honest and care that much about quality and accuracy. The rest of this seems like the same old UA-cam drama that I want no part of.
I wish college was different. I also wish so many jobs didn't have such oddly high standards for getting into them. I've heard stories about people getting engineering degrees and getting a job in "engineering" and barely, if ever, using the degree the job mandated. That isn't even including the ridiculousness that is; "required work experience in *This very specific thing* for an entry level position," on top of the degree. Why are we making millions of people go hundreds of thousands into debt to get decent jobs again?
Idk where your getting this information that engineering degrees don't use what they learn in college. I'm on my second internship (not even a full employee) and there is zero chance I would be able to do this job without the courses I have taken. That said I have to take a lot of BS liberal arts courses and stuff that could be skipped. I'm not in a major that has anything to do with coding and that is where you often hear about skipping college for something like a code academy Also my college requires a year of co-op/internship to graduate which helps with placement and helps pay for college.
Your absolutely right. I'm an engineering student myself and what you described is something I'm currently facing. Most schools don't offer the kind of specialization these companies are looking for so it's damn near impossible to get the experience/qualifications they want.
You describe a very real issue in this nation. Jobs requiring huge background in education and certain degrees. But the reality is you really don’t need those degrees. Some backwards stuff happening in this country.

Thing is, this was really shady on Kurzgesagt's end. Really, really shady. Giving the CB a time for an interview while secretly making a 'subtweet' response to his exact questions. All of which in a desperate attempt to win the audience to their side and make it seem like they didn't mess up and just talk out their necks without doing any independent research. Kurzgesagt can not answer the question: "can you trust Kurzgesagt" without bias. And no, you can't trust them, as shown. It took someone calling their video into question for them to do the due diligence of looking into the matter.

Even in the clips here, he seems like such a whiny, petulant dude. "I can see what he was doing instead of responding to me! He was doing MY video!" It also helps that hit-pieces tend to do incredibly well if they're against an established channel, and has even the slightest bit of a good point behind it, regardless of how established the channel is that makes the hit piece.
@Phil, what made this worse is that these people were not only bribing to get in but also they were claiming those charitable donations on their tax declarations.
I dont belive that a channel as big as Kurzgesagt would delete old videos and write a formal transarency peice just because one person was investigating. It would be unreasonable for Stephen to be upset because Phillip adressed the situation on his own terms first, if that's what's happening here. I think it's proper for investigators to give video creators and educators a chance to explain past actions and correct them.
I believe Stephen was just the breaking point in his decision to buckle down and finish it. He may have not even been working on it actively at the time until their conversation started but it still doesn't excuse Stephen.

It takes two seconds to be like “ hey sorry I have treatment can we please talk when I feeling better” also the fact that he listed chemo as third almost makes it seem like he’s making excuses.

People also forget that science isn't often about being right, it's mostly about being wrong.
and kurzgesagt even admitted that they weren't proud of the addiction video, that it wasn't properly researched 😂 man why do some people try to hit a science channel that is just trying to make the world a little smarter.

You're a scientist in the making. I'm sure kurzgesagt's new addiction video will have updated science, and be one of their best yet.
They also were wildly wrong in their bee apocalypse video. I can't believe they did any more than a cursory 15 minutes of research for that video.
Stephen is a drama seeker, Kurzgesagt is one of the best educational video creators out there.

1)Half of the time now, the channel is just about personal opinions or even political nonsense.

@NotSpecialDude, that's not how things work in the real world.

Also the whole 'small guy vs. big guy' thing is just disgusting. He is just reaching for an emotional high ground by trying to make people feel like he is fighting some sort of

We do need to hold education channels like Kurz accountable to the wrong data they disperse. That's my take away from all this.
Cothy how exactly is his interrogation room video clickbait? He goes pretty into depth on the methods cops use to interrogate people and he does so in a fairly entertaining way. @@BigYellowJoint1 Your picture has my full attention.
Things were took things out of context and proportion, but literally everyone does when they feel like they're bring exploited and we see it all the time, especially on this channel. Yes, Kurzgesagt should have told Coffee Break about their idea for the Trust video, and yes, Coffee Break should have kept the narrative closer to the whole truth. What we don't need are people like you taking a side rather than taking something from the story, with my personal takeaway being that the liability of truth falls upon the consumer of media in the end;
Kurzgesagt themselves admit that their videos can be oversimplified to the point of being misleading, so we should not take their content as the whole entire truth.
Observing the action and reaction on Coffee Break's end, we should just try to communicate clearer with each other if we want to come to an understanding.
Both channels make good videos, it's just that neither are made of perfect people.
Imagine paying 15k and only getting a 1420 lmao
yackamajez exactly what i’ve been laughing at the past 2 days lmaooo
Yeah I was thinking the same thing, bitch at least ask for 2100.
You could put way less money for a tutor and get a better score 💀
Yackamajez, you should really follow the news and not rely on one source. The reason for the 1420 is, her previous score was very low and it was believed that if she showed too great of an improvement, it would raise suspicions and so, the 1420 was agreed upon. It's intended to show a great improvement on her part but not too great as to raise questions.
The new SAT scoring system is out of 1600 instead of 2400. So a 1420 is in the 97th percentile. I wonder how such a high score was not suspicious 🤔

Smaller UA-camr seeks attention by making drama where there isn’t any in order to build their own audience.

These kids don’t need to work a day in their lives why do they want to go to IVY colleges?
It makes them richer and credibility matters too.

Like shit, I got a second consideration for entrance to my nursing school because my dad knows a big admin guy, and even that was conditional that I took and aced like a shit ton of pre-requisite courses in the summer before it started (originally rejected because they weren’t done). Hank Green often lets his bias overtake the facts in his videos
Dont make them pay for their parents mistakes
Most of the elite schools in the country are private universities so they don't get federal funds. That's why their tuition is so high. Of the schools Phil mentioned, only UCLA is a public school.
Nope! Expel the kids! They are part of the issue especially knowing they cheated on the exams. Ban them from college altogether

I'm not in a major that has anything to do with coding and that is where you often hear about skipping college for something like a code academy
Also my college requires a year of co-op/internship to graduate which helps with placement and helps pay for college.

@@TheArrowsPath you're on the unpopular opinion side just to let you know
@@_Bran Just cause something's popular doesn't mean it's right. Phil's talking from a point of bias.
I unsubscribed from CB
@@TheArrowsPath did you even what Phil's video? Or are you just trolling. Cause it would take a moron to think that coffee did not oversimplify the emails to serve himself
There are comments from the day the addiction video came out that ask the exact questions coffee asked, except 2 years earlier
Aunt Becky why would you do this? I’m so disappointed in you.

"help" they are just creating privileged monsters. You have to earn and suffer for some shit in life and learn that lesson that you aren't very special otherwise you hinder society as a whole
Kurzgesagt: "I'm gonna simplify science so regular guys can understand it without distorting it so much as to be unjustifiably inaccurate!"
Stephen: "I'mma ruin this dude's whole career!"
Kurzgesagt: "No you're not!"
Stephen: "WAAAAAH YOU STOLE MY THUNDER"
Can't you tell that Olivia Jade is a college rower? Look at those huge arms and legs she has. Oh, you can't tell? Well then here's $500,000.
Youtan Poluo she posed as a coxswain which famously just sit and count, so it was somewhat believable
about the Kurzgesag ting : Every *good* media outlet since the 70s that i recall has done public update corrections , from NPR to even Fox . Kurzgesag did that and even animated it . Coffee Break just didn't get to Capitalize on it since Kurzgesag did their own proper after (Hari was on Rogan) ,professional ,humble damage control . good on them I'd say. Stepen can still put out his own vid . i think he's upset since it won't be some *gotcha* monetizing Hit vid .
Even in the clips here, he seems like such a whiny, petulant dude.
"I can see what he was doing instead of responding to me! He was doing MY video!"
It also helps that hit-pieces tend to do incredibly well if they're against an established channel, and has even the slightest bit of a good point behind it, regardless of how established the channel is that makes the hit piece.
@Phil, what made this worse is that these people were not only bribing to get in but also they were claiming those charitable donations on their tax declarations.
I went to Olivia Jade's YT channel for the comments because I knew they'd be bomb af but she's disabled comments on all her videos lol.

Kurzgesagt should have been more transparent. Just saying we are working on it over email would have skipped all of this drama. Sure it is not his fault but he can't be trusted after this
@@Joso997 Who's to say he wouldn't have released that information if Stephen had replied to Philip's last email that welcomed more questions? I guess we'll never know.
@@SHADOWxSN1PER Phillip is to say that. In the AMA he stated that he deliberately witheld the information.
@@S.A.O.D.A I'm aware of that, but the question is, would some of that information have been given if the email conversation continued? We don't know because Stephen never continued it. Of course, it's possible he could have continued to keep that information shut tight, but it's just a thought.
Kurzgesagt pulling a B-rabbit from 8 mile.
Underrated comment. 👍

what is scary about an idea?
There's no reason to be sorry :) he and channel did nothing wrong.
@@DOFT.mp4 they also didnt go about it the right way either. He could have acknowledged CB or others in the description and say that he had been working on the video for a while, thus making it a win-win
RACIST! SEXIST!
I really thought Coffee Break was gonna ruin one of my favorite UA-cam channels
Thank god CB was the liar
Same to be honest
@Random Adam how?
@Arnold Akbar it's a non story because you is just bandwagoning.
@@shuiichii5517 Don't try and reason with him he's... *gulp* ignorant...
Yea i really like in a nutshell
The first story sounds a lot like a big deal over absolutely nothing. And I'm not gonna side with the small creator on this one.
It is nothing you're right. But how is coffee man in the right lol he could have made his point on actual shitty UA-camrs who make miseducated fear-mongering documentaries like Shane Dawson
so you clearly don't know that he is the wrong? The small creator?
@@lukamagicc i think you should reread the comment
@@lukamagicc how does shane Dawson do that?
@@lukamagicc you missed the not
I'm a fan of the Coffee Break channel, but the minute that hit piece was uploaded I could tell he was being petty. Wasn't the whole point to let Kurzgesagt rectify their own mistakes? I mean who the hell would answer questions knowing your answers will be used against you?! I lost a lot of respect for Stephen after his big tantrum
