It's great to see this, it's funny how growing up in the UK I always used to think Sonic was a much darker series than Mario and I think it was because of the few issues of this comic I got, it helped that the boxart often had Robotnik with that similar look over here like on Sonic 2 where he's a giant head and hand floating over Sonic and Tails. Anyway this was great to watch through whenever I got the chance. I'd love to see you perhaps cover IDW as a whole in future in a similar way (I would say Archie but I feel like that would be way too big of a thing to ask for).
Absolutely incredible work on this, this is totally what I'd been looking for to understand the Fleetway comic. This is the definite article! Also, nice job to the editor!
Great vid! I’ve been a Sonic fan for as long as I remember and I distinctly remember getting into the Archie comics, but I never knew this version of Sonic and his world existed before now.
I think what's interesting is that, in the Archie comics, Sonic has to live up to this title as the hero of Mobius, well in the Fleeetway Comics, It's sort of natural for Sonic. Because everyone already see him as the hero of Mobius. Plus I think Sonic in the archie comics seeing himself as the Hero of mobius as a title, seems a big egoistical in some degree. Because of all of the other Freedom Fighters that help take down Eggman also helps Sonic. But with the Fleetway Comics, that's not the case. Because yet again Sonic is natural for being the hero of Mobuis and he respects his friends efforts in trying to stop Robotnik well Sonic's is trying to stop him as well.

It kinda worries me how much I remember as you went through it all, even so far as to remember the classic green annual (getting it as a christmas gift that year xD). Its a shame we'll probably never see these comics given a kind of reprint anywhere. It really was a slice of UK life at the time and certainly helped ceoment Sonic the hedgehog for a lot of us kids then. Thank you for the deep dive, and I certainly hope the video can illuminate what made Sonic the Comic special to us who grew up with it.
Glad you're back. People will always be curious about the sonic fleetway comics, honestly I've seen more and more fans on fleetway comics. I wish the would reissue the fleetway comics.
Finally Finished the whole thing! Awesome job Johnny V 👍. Although I didn't grow up with this version of the the Sonic comics (being American and all) I must admit, I always like the style of these comics. They were very unique to say the least. Glad the fans continue the legacy.
Everything you said at the beginning about the comic solidifying your love for Sonic and being such a big part of your childhood absolutely describes my own experience almost to the letter! When I think of Sonic and Knuckles and the others it’s the Fleetway iterations that first come to mind, and perhaps the reason why I haven’t entirely enjoyed the direction that the games have gone since Sonic Adventure 2 due to its vastly different approach. I started at issue 45 all the way until the last one so those later reprints of older stories were invaluable but I tried pick up as many of the comics from before 45 at old car boot sales and it was accidentally being bought them instead that I discovered the Archie Sonic even existed. To this day I think of Moebius as Sonic’s home and of especially the Fleetway versions of the characters, primarily Knuckles who is still my favourite video game character ever… but mainly the Fleetway version.
Bravo, really felt the passion with this one. Funny editing bits, and nice to hear some interviews. The segways using the game titles was a nice touch as well
Me and my Brother used to collect STC back in the day, we started late from issue 162 until 216. For some reason our local Tescos stopped selling them, so we had no idea what happened when Super Sonic "became free" until years later. It never hit me as a kid that the stories after issue 184 were reprints, I did think it was weird how Jonny was killed off and suddenly brought back to life again. I am grateful for the reprints as they gave us a chance to read some fantastic storylines that we would not have read otherwise, but learning about the comics' history years later left me feeling depressed knowing that the original stories could have continued, it gave Sonic an edge more than anything else did at that time and I miss it tremendously! So glad it's still remembered with as much love for it as it did back then!
1:12 irl articles say east coast's coldness is a harsh enviroment for palm threes so it kinda lets me to believe this fight went down in the west coast, then again there is hints that it could have been Manhattan (Cop says they destroyed Downtown) or a similar place, back at Rockin Ricky's you can see everything is so summer like, we can say those locations are MILES away, its so cool how detailed the backgrounds and characters were done!! Based on their outfits you could tell where are they from or what season of the year is!
Honestly you need to do more long-form content because this video was fantastic 👏! I can tell you are extremely knowledgeable about Sonic The Comic, and that you put a lot of time and love into this video. Honestly I'm kind of surprised you were able to keep up with getting every issue of this comic up until the end of the Sonic Adventure arc! I'm an American, so I grew-up with the Archie comics, but didn't even know they existed until around the time Adventure released in the States. I collected for years after that, but could only get issues sporadically here and there, and never got to read much of the Archie comics as a result 😔 . But still have fond memories of our comic series, and I'm LOVING the new IDW comics. Been collecting the hardback compiled volumes, and excited for the release of Volume 4 of the IDW Collection this month 🥰 . Anyway, the Fleetway comic does sound pretty awesome, and was surprised that the story arcs seem close to what could be considered canon for the original games. And the Fleetway original ideas, like "Evil" Super Sonic were extremely compelling, as well. It sounds like Super was almost like a more extreme version of Shadow, in a way. What I don't like is the mistreatment of characters like Tails and Charmy, though. I probably would have hated this comic as a kid for that reason 😑 . But as an adult I think I could see past that now if I read them.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, a lot of love went into the video for sure. It was a sad day when the reprints started because it would've been awesome to see a Fleetway Shadow. I'm also really enjoying the current IDW comics. A totally different vibe from Fleetway and early Archie, it's fun to compare and contrast the three. What's been your favourite IDW story so far? I really enjoyed Scrapnik Island, I thought that was a great idea.
@@JohnnyVector I haven't gotten to Scrapnik Island yet because I've been reading the comics in the big compiled hardbacks IDW is releasing. But so far I really loved the Zombot Arc. The part where Cream gets infected tore my heart out 😭 ...
I sadly never got to read the comics as they came out as I've been around since 98 (sorry for making folks feel old with that) but I like a lot of people my age got into sonic thanks to my parents telling me about the game and getting me a plug and play megadrive when I was 4... Anyway fast forward years later when I got a ps2 and sonic mega collection plus I found the archie comics and really really wanted issues of it and asked my parents for them and when I couldn't get them I tried to Internet and putting in sonic the comic by accident I stumbled upon the UK comics and scans people had uploaded to the Internet and couldn't get enough of it. I managed to get a few comics over the years of sonic the comic but mainly kept up with archie and the idw comics as they release. I've had the pleasure to shadow Nigel dobynn at the moniaive comic festival years ago where John wagner, John mcshane and Alan grant were guests and it was so lovely to hear nigel's stories about the comic and the other series he's worked on. I got him to sign some of my comics he was such a lovely person. And one last thing I was down in Birmingham for mcm Birmingham convention and found a stall of comics where they had the idw graphic novels and was buying for a friend of mine's Christmas. He asked me and my best pal if I wanted to see the individual sonic comics and we both said of course thinking it would be the archie stuff or idw but the moment we saw it was issues of sonic the comic we both freaked out and bought one of the issue's from him and said he wish he had recorded our reactions to it.
I've become a fan of yours over the past week bingeing your videos! I don't get a lot of British Sonictubers in my algorithm, so it's been super cool for a basic 'Murrican like me to learn about the different, interesting lore Sonic has outside the U.S.A and Japan. I love how honest and sincere your channel is, too--the one about 90s Sonic books from your childhood and your "hot takes" on TAOSTH's Robotnik design are a couple of my favorites, lol! I've seen tons of videos on Archie Sonic, but this is my introduction to Fleetway Sonic. I'm impressed with how consistently nice the art is! Some genuinely talented artists on the team; I love Dobbin's hand painted work. It seems like it looked a lot less, um... "Awkwardly y2k faux-anime" than some of Archie's (no offense to them, just my personal taste.) They look like Sonic characters, not sexy anime proportions with furry heads, lol. Thanks for sharing your work on here, it's been a ton of fun to watch!
this is going to be a classic video. considering how obscure the UK comics are (compared to the US ones) this will definitely help fans who haven't read it. Gonna be a fun watch for sure.
Randomly stumbled across this and didn't know about the Fleetway Sonic the Comic story. I remember reading the American version of the Sonic comics from Archie, so seeing the differences are really interesting. Thank you for making this video and you got my sub -^_^-
You should do a video on Sonic the Comic Online continuation. I first heard about that in a media studies magazine during my A -levels 20 years ago. And have broadly kept up with it since (even though in more recent times there has been years between issues)
i understand that this video likely means that there wont be any more specialized retrospectives on fleetway sonic, but id love to see more videos done on it. after all, having shrter "bite sized" (relatively speaking, ofc) episodes would definately be helpful so you dont have to watch a 3 hour long retrospective for bits and pieces of info on specific topics, and it could allow you to dive deeper on certain ideas you had to skim over, like running over certain secondary arks, like descibing the full list of captain plunders adventures (including my personal favorite character, simpson the cat), or covering one of knuckles long arks, or going into detail over the complete eternity ring ark, and could allow you to talk about reoccurring characters like windy wallace, or going deeper into grimers full story, and maybe talking about minor characters that are just too interesting to ignore, like several one off goons related to robotnik and the cillains that filled in the power vacume created by issue 100. and honestly, id love to see you cover the complete stories of the other sega games, like the mad world of decapattack, or the strangely insane worlds of ecco the dolphin and shining force, and even the intersting stories of shinobi and kid chameleon. anyways, sorry for the massive comment, just a big fan of stc and would love to see more videos about it from you!
Can you make a video discussing the entire story so far, of the Sonic The Comic Online fan continuation? That would be a great sequel for this video 👍👍👍👍
27:30 Im always fond of the main baddie's helper being "better" at the job, not neccessarily being smarter or more skilled but just being less hampered by their own ego.
honestly thank you for these videos, as a british fan born the year adventure released these were before my time so by the time i had discovered them they were long gone. i've always had a fascination with retro sonic having gems and mega collections and playing them as much as the gamecube/ps2 era of games and while my favourite era of sonic is still adventure to unleashed can definitely say i found a lotta hidden gems. and honestly this comic has so many fun ideas in it, i do really need to sit down and read it at some point cause man it's so refreshing to see more jerky characters after the last decade of sanatised heroes in media in general. was kinda put off reading from the stylistic clash of the sonic characters to everything else but honestly these days, the art is so well done with the odd exception (like i swear the blue pineapple head backshots must have been a shortcut it's so damn jarring lol)
Okay bringing up Old Sonic really was a blast from the past. I remember in one of the original strips there was a misprint repeating of lines that made no sense and had to be made up in an extra strip in the next issue. Man these take me back!
Nigel's thoughts on Johnny Lightfoot during the segment when he was talking about the fact that the character had a dramatic death and I couldn't hear a single thing and guess what I took off my headphones and I realized my volume is turned up it's just he wasn't saying anything in the recording is that a mess up in the editing or something ?
I'm not sure tbh. I've had a few comments mentioning that they can't hear anything during a few of the interview segments but honest to goodness I can't hear any issues on my side. I'm not sure what's going on.
@@JohnnyVector hey It was still a great video 😄 I vibe with it and you seem really cool as a person If you ever open to collabs in the future consider me because I'm always open and plus you seem pretty chill 😎

was a avid STC fan buyer in the day, although my interest in keeping up with the series peaked around 97-98 when it was becoming harder to find the series in my newsagent and the endless reprints that started appearing. in fairness of it developing its own arc with characters and their stories, the super sonic character always interested me and after seeing what happened to the American counterpart's characters and series, our seemed easier to follow. the final crushing blow was sadly having to get rid of them around the 2010s as a leak in my loft ruined the whole lot, so its nice to see someone take time to fully give a retrospective on the series in a whole.
I wasn’t born in the 90’s so I didn’t have a chance to get the SHC comics. But, thanks to you, I now have a huge understanding of these comics and they have a lot of charm. Also, Fleetway Super Sonic is scarily cool in my opinion.
HOLY CRAP this is a long one I’m finally getting a PC a today so I can watch this while I wait for it to arrive. I’ve always been fond of what I knew about the Fleetway comics but I never got to read them myself so my knowledge is pretty limited about it. Glad this video’s got me covered
Just discovered your channel. Love the way you set up your lore videos and how you discuss it, it reminds me a lot of some Warhammer lore channels I frequent.
My best guess (Besides it just being more accessible to Americans) is that it was the closest thing to a continuation of SatAm or at least those characters. Plus it ran for a lot longer meaning an entire other generation of kids were able to grow up on them
1:14:50 "A weird and wonderful coincidence." I mean, runaway prince is a typical plot device. Makes sense that someone would take bees, consider that they're led by a queen, and simply insert the only bee character into an important role in the monarchy. It's not too surprising.

Want the best version of Knuckles? Fleetway has that covered!
He's returned.. 😮
I get really mad whenever people call Super Sonic(Negative) Fleetway, help I know I'm in the wrong here.
I think it sounds badass.
I 100% agree to taking Fleetway Amy over current Amy, she was such a better character and I felt the crossbow honestly worked for her!
Wellcome back legend I missed your videos
Thank you! I hope you enjoy this one
Fleetway has the better End Game and Post-End Game arcs than Archie.
this is going to be a classic video. considering how obscure the UK comics are (compared to the US ones) this will definitely help fans who haven't read it. Gonna be a fun watch for sure.
Thank you, this was a lot of fun to put together so I hope people enjoy learning about a fairly niche topic
wonderful video, thanks for your work!! :D
man, Fleetway sonic was quite the project! xD
the knuckles metal medallion makes so much sense to me that I wish it stayed that way
I’ve been thinking about getting into the Fleetway comics.
Because of this, May I request a video on the character Metamorphia?
Randomly stumbled across this and didn't know about the Fleetway Sonic the Comic story. I remember reading the American version of the Sonic comics from Archie, so seeing the differences are really interesting. Thank you for making this video and you got my sub -^_^-
Welcome back, Johnny!!
Thanks! Enjoy the video
I was always hoping CyberShell would make something like this, but this is basically the video I had in mind! Thanks
You should do a video on Sonic the Comic Online continuation. I first heard about that in a media studies magazine during my A -levels 20 years ago. And have broadly kept up with it since (even though in more recent times there has been years between issues)
I would love to do a follow-up video discussing StCO. I'll have a bit of a StC break for a while but yeah, it'll make for a fun video I think.
i understand that this video likely means that there wont be any more specialized retrospectives on fleetway sonic, but id love to see more videos done on it. after all, having shrter "bite sized" (relatively speaking, ofc) episodes would definately be helpful so you dont have to watch a 3 hour long retrospective for bits and pieces of info on specific topics, and it could allow you to dive deeper on certain ideas you had to skim over, like running over certain secondary arks, like descibing the full list of captain plunders adventures (including my personal favorite character, simpson the cat), or covering one of knuckles long arks, or going into detail over the complete eternity ring ark, and could allow you to talk about reoccurring characters like windy wallace, or going deeper into grimers full story, and maybe talking about minor characters that are just too interesting to ignore, like several one off goons related to robotnik and the cillains that filled in the power vacume created by issue 100. and honestly, id love to see you cover the complete stories of the other sega games, like the mad world of decapattack, or the strangely insane worlds of ecco the dolphin and shining force, and even the intersting stories of shinobi and kid chameleon. anyways, sorry for the massive comment, just a big fan of stc and would love to see more videos about it from you!
Can you make a video discussing the entire story so far, of the Sonic The Comic Online fan continuation? That would be a great sequel for this video 👍👍👍👍
Well great video and I did miss you since you are my favourtie sonic youtuber
Thank you, that's quite a compliment!
27:30 Im always fond of the main baddie's helper being "better" at the job, not neccessarily being smarter or more skilled but just being less hampered by their own ego.
I would love to see a Fleetway Anime / Cartoon show adaptation even if it was a fan made one for like a few minutes. The art style is so cool
Fun fact: In Sonic the comic, it is stated that Beavis and Butthead is Sonic's favorite show. I'm not making this up.
honestly thank you for these videos, as a british fan born the year adventure released these were before my time so by the time i had discovered them they were long gone. i've always had a fascination with retro sonic having gems and mega collections and playing them as much as the gamecube/ps2 era of games and while my favourite era of sonic is still adventure to unleashed can definitely say i found a lotta hidden gems.
and honestly this comic has so many fun ideas in it, i do really need to sit down and read it at some point cause man it's so refreshing to see more jerky characters after the last decade of sanatised heroes in media in general. was kinda put off reading from the stylistic clash of the sonic characters to everything else but honestly these days, the art is so well done with the odd exception (like i swear the blue pineapple head backshots must have been a shortcut it's so damn jarring lol)
@@JohnnyVector hey
It was still a great video 😄
I vibe with it and you seem really cool as a person
If you ever open to collabs in the future consider me because I'm always open and plus you seem pretty chill 😎
The king is back! A surprise, but a welcome one :3
Heck yeah, I've been binging all sorts of Sonic comics (got through STC and IDW earlier and I'm going through Archie now), your timing couldn't be better!
I've never seen a video of yours I think but with that kind of personal introduction, how could I not like, comment, and subscribe lol
1st Place: Sonic The Comic
2st Place: IDW Sonic
Last Place: Archie Sonic
I'm biased towards Sonic the Comic but I do enjoy how off-colour and weird Archie Sonic could be. The Ken Penders years are fascinating
13:24 I feel the need to use this situation to mention how I hate cables, mainly for the reason shown.
Perfect timing for the people curious about the sonic movie 4 plot
was a avid STC fan buyer in the day, although my interest in keeping up with the series peaked around 97-98 when it was becoming harder to find the series in my newsagent and the endless reprints that started appearing. in fairness of it developing its own arc with characters and their stories, the super sonic character always interested me and after seeing what happened to the American counterpart's characters and series, our seemed easier to follow. the final crushing blow was sadly having to get rid of them around the 2010s as a leak in my loft ruined the whole lot, so its nice to see someone take time to fully give a retrospective on the series in a whole.
I wasn’t born in the 90’s so I didn’t have a chance to get the SHC comics. But, thanks to you, I now have a huge understanding of these comics and they have a lot of charm. Also, Fleetway Super Sonic is scarily cool in my opinion.
Whoa!! So cool! A lovely thing to listen to while at work!
56:27 Ian Flynn: *achoo!!*
1:30:43 has an audio error btw. it loops a few seconds of the audio back again
Thanks! I'll see if I can sort that in UA-cam Studio
HES BACK
Ahhhh memories. I remember reading my first ever STC comic in 1994...holy do I feel so old! >
Same.
HOLY CRAP this is a long one
I’m finally getting a PC a today so I can watch this while I wait for it to arrive. I’ve always been fond of what I knew about the Fleetway comics but I never got to read them myself so my knowledge is pretty limited about it. Glad this video’s got me covered
2:31:42
To clarify, they were taking the kids to the ceremony. But Sonic didn't won't to deal with it after realizing what was going on.
Our king has returned!
Just discovered your channel. Love the way you set up your lore videos and how you discuss it, it reminds me a lot of some Warhammer lore channels I frequent.
Aaaand now I know why our boy Johnny was away for a little while. And damn it paid off, great video ^^
bro came back when we needed him
Haha I am the Batman of the very niche Sonic the Comic community!
The goat is back my childhood is complete!
I never really got the Fleetway stuff before I found this video, but now? Consider me intrigued!
Excellent, that's exactly what I like to hear
2:12:16 hum actually that the music on Vulcan during Spock’s pon farr not a Klingon battle music...😅😂😊
Good to see you back
Printing 38 comics entirely made of reprints is so goddamn insulting and petty that it's kind of impressive.
Sonic comics like this doing their own thing actually inspires me to make my own Sonic comic. On issue 6 now.
2:20:00 Possibly missed the chance to do "Fleetway did it first"
Seriously, Why Is Archie Sonic more Popular Than Fleetway Sonic?
My best guess (Besides it just being more accessible to Americans) is that it was the closest thing to a continuation of SatAm or at least those characters. Plus it ran for a lot longer meaning an entire other generation of kids were able to grow up on them
It's better
America
1:14:50 "A weird and wonderful coincidence." I mean, runaway prince is a typical plot device. Makes sense that someone would take bees, consider that they're led by a queen, and simply insert the only bee character into an important role in the monarchy. It's not too surprising.
when the world needs him, he returns...
Ещё одно замечательное видео от тебя! Мне всегда нравились комиксы от Флитвей как раз из-за своих отличий от игр и других медиа по Сонику. Спасибо за такое длинное и подробное видео!
"Fleetway's version might be the scariest incarnation of Robotnik in any media."
Boy are your rose-tinted glasses gonna get you into trouble, can practically hear the SatAM fans banging on your door.
This will always be THE Sonic canon for me.
2:25:00 If I had a nickel for every Purple Hulk parody named Bulk, I'd have two etc. etc.
