- Had an amazing tour with Charlie and Kirk out in Colorado. This was our last set in Denver. Some really great musical moments on this. Cymbals are Agop 15" turk hats, 20" Sig ride & 22" 30th anniversary. Using my 5.5" Signature BALANCE walnut snare.

The only other person that I've been able to watch as intently on drums would be Benny Greb, man you got something here.
Thank you Chris!
That first tune stirs up some feelings I didn't know I had.... I was perpetually making some kind of face as if something stank
Cymbal screech @ 2:13 was brilliant! It kicked off the trumpet solo perfectly and in key. Never saw that used musically. It's usually just a solo gimmick.
Thank you for posting these full length videos. I feel like there is a lot to learn by just "sitting next to you" on these small gigs and watching you work.
It really doesn't get much better than that! Masterful playing by all three!
Your grooves are so delicate yet bulletproof. Love how you can create such depth in the simplest beats!
Amazing interaction and very musical approach to drumming. Great stuff!
What a grooving band! I really enjoy what you and Charlie do together
Love how you swing your grooves. Lol. No pun intended. Great timing. Great creativity! Great performance.
love this stuff - so groovy!
Dude your playing always blows my mind! You sound incredible. Can't wait to see where you go!
Thank you!
le Wishing Well est juste délicieux et super groovy bravo Carter !!!
Awesome! You should upload more gigs man!
I am a drummer in Keizer and from my experience their times to have a bass drum open sound and then their are those times where you want to put a little muffling in the bass and these are one of those times in my opinion the bass is a little to much but wow very groovy playing thank you for inspiring us it is an honor to watch you guys any day any time
Carter : Saw a vid of you losing 3 tension screws together one side of the snare, WOW..
Old school trick I learned man years ago, using good hardwood drum shells :
coat the edge of the drum shell with bees wax before installing the drum skin,
It acts as a lubricant and seal the edge grain from cracks over the years.
Carter your a great in the pocket drummer and very particular about your sound quality.
Hope I get a reply. Thanks Carter
4:02 What a lesson on dynamics!
Ok, I'm done trying to pinpoint awesome moments on those gigs. The groove you guys are getting out of this is sick. Hot damn.
Sick player 🤘😎Charlie is a hero..
Grooving 🎶
Thanks once again for sharing these great videos. So inspiring. I kick myself everyday I wasn't about when the BALANCE snare were for sale. Any chance of a few more?.....
Thanks! We only were able to do 26 because of the wood. Pretty rare stuff.
Understood Sir, my loss sadly.
Thanks for the info on Index. Cool company! Btw, would you mind listing the names of the songs you guys played in this set?
Bass drum sound amazing!!!
Yep
cant tell if sarcasm or..
I hear the bass doing magic. Where is he? The video forgot him... or my ears are wrong.
Che Spettacolo!!
here we go with the tasty study music!
Where did that bell sound come from at 0:53? It happened right as you play your cross stick. That would be a super cool sound to use.
Nobody:
Charlie: OH!
Bravissimo, Great Trio. So livery, minimal, very groovy and Great Performance. Great Drumsound, wich snare are you play?
Come in Italy pleaseee
Colorado....long way from home! Right next to why home state. Great music and playing, Carter! Just wondering what your thought process is when you go with various cymbal ensembles for specific gigs....i.e. why 20" Sig ride in lieu of say 20" 30th Anniversary on the left side (lighter weight = better crash-ability?)....and why turk hats vs. say 15" 30th Anniversary, especially when paired with the 22" 30th. Is it predicated on the room or the music you are playing (or both) or have you just grown to like the sig ride and turk hats more than the 30th equivalents? Also, would you change cymbals mid-gig? Sorry for all the questions.....just curious.
Could watch you play all day! On another note, how do you fly with your snare? Cymbals? Kit?
I just bring em on plane and put in overhead
So damn groovy as always Carter! What sticks are you using?
No mounted tom?
Bass drum tuned low. Not many can pull that off...sounds great
love that bass drum sound. What kind of beater are you using if you dont mind me asking?
Wood light Low Boy Beater
Skills.
Beautiful playing Carter! That snare sounds incredible too! Who makes it?
Thats my 6.5" Balance Signature Snare. Sold out
In that case I'd better make an offer on yours.
I'll give you $20 bucks for that thing. Cold hard cash Mr.McLean.
Amazing playing as always! Do you know what the house kit your playing is? I'm assuming it's the house kit?
Harold Lovell its not house kit. Gretsch usa custom kick and floor. My balance 5.5" sig snare
Carter McLean cool thanks for responding
Yo, Carter, that's almost tastefull as Grekos strawberry yogurt :)
Btw Carter, what is that shaker you're using? Is that a soup or a vegetable can?
C Hill thanks! Its made by Index percussion
Great playing! What shaker are you using?
Its made by Index and its med weight
Carter, how much of the music is improv vs prepared?
Dell Sartin about 65% is improv
So good! Always! Thanks for the reply.
I'm assuming the 30th anniversary main ride but is it 20 or 22? And 15 30th hats? Signature left side? I'm gonna say my 22 30th is the my favorite of the 30th line, and equal to some those great Turkish Ks of the past. The 30ths get better as they age
Its in the description above.
Carter McLean The description wasn't loading, and having trouble with loading comments. I was able to "hard Start' my I pad and everything works. I'm playing the same and have been for months. (But using 15 30th hats) . This video is useful for teaching students about dynamics, technique, and snare drum tuning
Thanks again
Edit
Any more of your snare drums available, and if so could one find its way to Memphis Drum Shop? I'd pay in advance for it for sure..
Whats the name of the song at 37:05?
What is the stack cymbal you put on the Signature ride?
12" 30th anniversary on top of the 20" sig ride
Anyone know the name of the first tune?

Hey Carter! Sick groove as always!...Quick question, what is that magnificent sounding metal work of art you got going on on top of your bass drum? It fits in so beautifully with the rest of your kit!
Side note: I play along to your Charlie Hunter Trio videos to warm up on pad every day!
Its made by Adam Morford of Morfbeats. Amazing stuff. THANKS!!!!
Song title at 20:00?
"Wishing Well", originally sung by Terence Trent D'Arby (a.k.a. Sananda Maitreya)
Holy F'n pop up ads.
not a fan of the grouping of drums guitar and trumpet....trio... imo it's not a good idea
