  • I'm sharing some new ways I've been displaying my houseplants! I by no means created these ideas, they're just things I've started doing recently. Trying new things with my plants is always so much fun and I'm happy to be able to share it with you all as well :) If you try any of these things, tag me on Instagram! My IG is @benji_plant I'd love to see what you create.

    Love the use of branches.They look way better than moss poles. Do you do anything to the bottom of the woods stakes to prevent rot?

    • @benjiplant
      @benjiplant  2 роки тому +65

      I thought it would be an issue, but i've repotted a few of my plants that have wood stakes and the portion buried in the soil is always fine. It might be because my soil mix is pretty airy and I wait a while between waterings, so maybe the wood has time to dry out?

      I also love this instead of moss poles. I'm wondering how I would do this with clay.

    • @gailalbers1430
      @gailalbers1430 2 роки тому +12

      @@kateshaw1581 Several ways:
      1) you can extrude hollow tubes, if you have a big one. then de- form them while leather hard to maybe make look like bark.
      2) you could make slabs of clay , roll them to a desired thickness ( not too thin) and then roll and hand build them together- you can roll them around a object of the shape you want . If that inner supporting shape is non- porous, then cover it in a wrap of layers like dry news paper. or fabric, burlap , anything that will prevent the clay from sticking to the non- porous surface and help it dry by wicking the moisture away .
      You would not want to glaze the piece with a normal shiny glaze, you can pick a clay with a natural color you like- maybe white , yellow or red , brown or black. and you could paint it with an oxide, stain or under glaze or even a terra siggilata, while still moist .
      3) mix both methods.
      Good luck !
      let me know how it went!🙂

      @@kateshaw1581 do you mean clay as in LECA? You could insert a support by drilling into the base of your branch and inserting a pvc or bamboo stake or something to go into the soil allowing the branch to rest at a higher level

    The branch as a trellis for the vining plants is actually clever. I have a few extra unused branches for my aquarium; now they'll have a purpose. From bonsai, the only idea I use is placing a mesh under the pot especially if it has holes. The mesh keeps dirt and substrate from draining out of the pot and placing pot shards or stones to cover the holes do not work as well as a mesh.

    Hi Benji! New subscriber here, just a quick tip for you. If you want to increase the humidity of a room without buying a humidifier get a tray or a deep bowl and fill it with pebbles and water, the pebbles absorb heat which helps the evaporation process! Also I really like the idea of using wooden stakes instead of moss poles, super stylish! Have a great day

    Can you make a video on moss and maybe go into detail on how it is used on top of plant soil and how to keep it alive? Thank youuu

    • @benjiplant
      @benjiplant  2 роки тому +1

      I might in a future video! But for now, I'll leave some tips here. I always wondered how bonsai growers are able to keep their moss alive, considering their plants are often in direct sun and the soil is very fast draining. The key is to water every day or every other day, and by water, I mean completely drench the pot and moss. For this reason, I've only been able to keep moss as a top dressing on plants I'm growing on my balcony. Outside in California, it's pretty dry, warm, and windy, so potted plants dry out quickly. Thus allowing me to water every day without overwatering my plants. Also, the live moss shown in the video was collected from my aunt's yard in San Diego, CA lol
      I create a very airy mix, something like 50% or more of pumice/perlite/leca/lava rock and then the rest is potting soil. This plus the California climate allows me to water every day and give the moss a constant supply of water. Something to note is that moss doesn't actually have roots, so most or all of the water it receives is from atmospheric water or water directly passing through it.
      TLDR: put it on top of a very well draining mix, and shower daily or every other day.

    I love using sticks instead of moss poles, I use ones that my dog brings home from walks hehe. I scrape off any bark and stick em in the soil. It's super simple and much cheaper - sphagnum moss gets pretty expensive and is not always sustainably farmed so I try to use it very sparingly. I also agree that moss poles take away for the plant - sticks look much more natural and I think really beautiful :))

  • @samanthabecerra8488
    @samanthabecerra8488 2 роки тому +8

    I love the top dressing I agree dirt can make the plant look incomplete in a way? But the top dressing doesn’t that mean that it’ll take longer for water to dry like when you water your plants again or like can contribute to root rot since all the wet soil is trapped in? Or have you not had any issues? It’s because I’m considering top dressing my plants as well

    • @benjiplant
      @benjiplant  2 роки тому +3

      it depends, the sand definitely makes drying times longer, but the turface and lava rock don't affect it too much. Lava rock and turface (to a lesser extent) are pretty porous and allow air to flow through freely
