I think it’s important to understand that MJK is 60. 30 years of screaming will take a toll on the vocal chords. I was at both shows and he sounded awesome. I heard the Grudge scream in all it’s glory several times live, in 2001 and 2002 during the Lateralus era. Maynard was on 🔥 back then. He recently stated that he can’t sing some of their most popular songs anymore.

@@rubaidaallen2764 they're saying the video cuts off before the screaming part, not that Maynard can't scream anymore.

      @@itamararce7347 thanks.
Seems a little bit like cheating...but I guess he maybe deserves a pass for a shortcut here, or there.
      Won't be selling my tickets

@@ShastaBean well I mean its not a regular cymbal swell. On the album and since 2001 he's always triggered the same sample in the same manner. Similar to how he starts Fear Inoculum with a pad to make that weird sound. I'll add this, during a few moments in the Grudge he plays two pedals with his RIGHT FOOT (one of which is an electric pedal to trigger another sample) - so I wouldn't call his use of triggers 'cheating' but I understand your point I suppose

@@itamararce7347 it's not like I'd drop his ranking or anything. It just threw me off not seeing the sticks turn into a blur during that swell.
So your explanation helped me a lot at least understand why and also then watched a video discussing his kit and some use of the pads. Interesting. He keeps his old "toilet-seat" pad because the sounds are in the songs and newer pads might not easily duplicate the original sound.
And for anyone that may not appreciate the level the guy plays at, the Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT) video will demonstrate.
Watching that, again now, and seeing how he hits the pads in different places at times for different sounds maybe even more impressive.
      Thanks!
(oh, and tangent - that seeing a few try covers of this song, led to El Estepario Siberiano...that fella can wield a pair of sticks, too)
