Before I drilled my new tank I used the CPR overflow. Downside was I had to use an aqua-lifter pump which you can't get anymore. I would put a piece of poly filter over the hole in order to quiet the noise. Good video.👍🏾
That is the problem with this type of overflow, especially on a reef tank where you want the surface wavy and choppy. In the past I have used an Aqua Lifter pump input snaked up inside the U tube and that clears the air continuously.
The water in the U tube will remain as both ends are submerged in a reservoir. It will restart when the power resumes. Example, when I feed the fish I turn off all filters to keep food from being swept away, then restart when they are finished, no problems.

Thanks, wish I had drilled tanks. This is a difficult hobby when you're as cheap as I am.
I was going to suggest that. You beat me to it!!

How do you keep the air out of the u tube? Every 2 days mine fills up with air…

Just realized what account I was using.
This is Ed from Gwonk Reefkeeping.🤣
Hi Ed, I'm Larry. From your videos look like you live in Maryland, I live on the eastern shore.
I have the same one. So u just put a smaller pvc pipe into the overflow drain pvc pipe???
It's just standard 1 inch PVC piece of pipe. Remember this trick is a function of water flow, so if you don't have enough flow it will still gurgle.
@@lkapitan8232 my return pump is all the way up. Could I send u a video?
@@mrlawrence82 Yes
Quality video! Thanks for sharing awesome 411!
Thanks bud.
what happens in a power cut ?

Put a pvc pipe in it.
Now put a sponge filter on it.
