Awesome advice Sir 👍 I've a few questions 1.How big do you need to drill the hole for the water to escape in the longer tube inside tank? 2. Do you need to use a barb end with vinyl tube or could you full pvc connections for the drain outside tank? 3. How long should the pvc pipe i side be? Height of tank? 4. Can you connect 2 overflow to 1 drain pipe for faster flow if incoming water is at a higher flow? Like one on each end of tank connected to main drain?
Great questions; 1. The same diameter as the internal diameter of the tubing you are using in syphon (or the smallest diameter connection in the entire assembly), that will be the system limit anyway. 2. Full pvc is fine also 👍 3. The bottom end cap has to be lower than the outside bottom end cap and the inner tubing must be lower that the tee connection for the outlet, the lower and more gap lower risk of syphon break. 4. Yes in theory, the limit will most likely just be the diameter of the outflow in that case.

Excellent video demonstration of the no-drill system. With it being as simple as this, I don't know why anyone would drill their aquarium. I decided to copy your idea of automatic water changes as well by building a similar system and running PEX tubing to my sink drain and faucet lines. Now all I have to do is open a valve to drain water and open another valve to fill. Makes water changes so easy!
I am so glad i found this video! I'm about to set up a huge rack for breeding and this will save me so much time and space for connecting tanks together for water changes!
The cool thing is you could piggyback them tank to tank and then just fill the first tank on the rack and in theory it should cycle new water through them all..
thank you for video, just one question: we see how you drain the water out, but what about fill in ? you mean to leave a hose connected to the tap and leaves open whitout treat with antichlor?

@@BlakesAquatics I'm wondering about this myself. I wouldn't use a sponge though as they can get clogged up just like filters do. I have a 300LT of fish tank and 30LT of sump tank so 3.000LT per minute of water circulation as well. Is it possible to maintain such water transfer without risk with this system do you think? Happy to take your comments if possible :) Thanks.
Any suggestions on how to keep shrimp and fry out? I'd assume a sponge wrapped around or screen? Would a second higher hole drilled say just before overflow height of the tank as a backup work incase the first gets clogged? Btw great vid
hey mate, yeah just some coarse sponge will work fine for that, though there wont typically be a heap of water filling the hole if its used in a drip system. a backup hole should definitely work as well
You could simplify the design a little bit. The PVC pipes don't need to be a U bend, you essentially just want a reservoir on each side of the tank's wall, with the siphon keeping the two level. And then an overflow tap on the outside tank which feeds to the sump tank. Of course, the U-shaped tube provides a nice reliable way to hang it on the aquarium, which is a great bonus.
Hey Blake I'm trying to setup my fish room soon. This video is really helpful. What size pipe and vinyl tube do you recommend to keep up with add like a 4 gallons per hour?
The bigger the better as it will be less likely to clog or back up. Its hard for me to visuale 4 gph (16lph but id say the sizes in this video would be a good starting point for that

When plumping you’re sump. Does it matter where you’re t’s are. I mean do they have to be in the middle of the tank so the lines will have the same flow? My tank is pre drilled
Idk if this is considered a “overflow” tank but I use a water pump pumping water into a smaller tank with plants and media and the another water pump going into the big tank. It’s a filter system and also makes it easier for me to do water changes with out disturbing my fish/axolotl since I can get rid of water from the smaller tank which will make clean water go into the big tank.
I’m doing the same but for my 40G (breeder) reef tank. My sump is a 20G (high) with about 3/4 of water and as for my display tank, I keep the level right below the top tank frame just in case something fails and it won’t overflow in any situations. I changed the outlet to just a PVC pipe instead of the tubing with ball valves on both inlet and outlet. I keep my ball valve on the pump side cracked so it doesn’t push too much water out to keep it balanced with the water draining. I hope that helps for those who are worried about leakage or anything that goes wrong.
Hello, just installed these on a shelf awuaponic system. One of the tanks keeps filling even when the overflow is primed and trickling. I balanced the incoming water and the sypon slowed to a stop but the tank kept filling. Any suggestions, ive already adjusted height and depth on the tank side, made sure there isnt any clogs. Thats a clever siphon but what if the water level gets low on a bunch of tanks and breaks the siphon or the pump bringing in new water is going faster than the siphon? Youd gave to restart the siphon on every tank manually. I wonder if you could use a pump to create a vacuum in the pipes again...?
If the water level gets low its not a problem because water is still in the pipe. If your return pump is too fast that is an issue. You either have to size up everything or add multiple

My concern. If the pump is on pumping water to the tank and the over flow stop working. Will the tank fill up or is there a way to stop the pump when over flow stop?
