Don't even worry about the Porsche. All of your projects are amazing. Jump back and forth as you get parts and time This aero car will be a great build!
Agreed! The Porsche will always be there, and the world is full of them; there is no need to hurry for the sake of historic preservation. It's not that car anyway.
Congratulations Dom. Just watched the video - looks like a very good start - don't be scared to throw some of it away and on a technical note, the back axle ratio is going to be very important, so check what it is and start getting a crown, wheel and pinion made as it takes a very long time. Look forward to welcoming you to the Shed soon. And thanks for the mention. Ivan
When I started at LMB in Belgium, they had just finished a home grown Minerva. The original sleeve valve smoke generator engine was shot, so they built a Liberty V12 from parts left over from the first war. I wasn't cheap, but it was absolutely brutal. They made quite a few engines so there must be another being used as a door stop somewhere.
Suggest a lorry/bus gearbox in order to handle 200hp. I have a barn full of old aero engines - but none quite that early. The original Napier Lion - an excellent engine, came out in 1917, but was developed through to 1930..... Not easy to find, but the later ones were very pretty robust and reliable. They started at 450bhp, and ended-up at 600-1,350bhp The really ideal engine would be a Wolseley Viper V8 - a 200bhp, direct-drive version of the Hispano Suiza 8b geared-drive engine. However - none of these engines are easy to find - so you may be best advised to look again at the OX5.
I totally understand the desire to make your Special SPECIAL, with an unusual engine that would set it apart from the other Edwardian Monsters, however... There's something to be said about taking the more well trodden path on your first trip over the falls if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor. An OX-5, a Hall-Scott or similar, if it's within your budget, will get the wheels turning, both literally and figuratively, far sooner than something exotic that requires reverse engineering to repair or replace broken or missing parts. There's also the institutional knowledge of your new H-S or Curtis mates that have made a lot of the expensive mistakes already and will be happy to help. You can enjoy your Edwardian HotRod years sooner and be on the lookout for that 30litre TwinCam Etcetterini Dirigible engine while you're Hooning around at Members Meetings and plowing through the Hedges at Prescott. Lots of the Ferocious Fire Breathing Beasts of yore had a progression of engines ranging from the merely absurd to the unfeasably ludicrous as the owners got used to increasing levels of terror and panic, so you'd be living the adventure in an historically accurate way. Whatever you do, it's going to be BADASS and I don't doubt that you'll see it through
Hi Dom, I love the sound of the Ranalah Rocket. Coach built body gives you an ideal opportunity to bring along the skills of apprentices by building various body parts at shows and demo’s. I suppose it would be a bit like getting them to learn whilst at the same time driving them towards top-end production. A motoring community build with a single purpose. Taking it to GOODWOOD. Best of luck and I hope all goes well. W
very sad you had to sell the original Ranalah, I remember how excited you were to hunt it down and the journey to find the old boy engineer with the classic Italian cars. This sound like it's going to be an amazing ride though and I'm here for it!
New to your channel, saw that Liberty and jumped on, been a dream of mine as well, unfortunately got too old and bent with spinal cord injury or I’d be easing along with the shed racer. This part of projects is really exciting as your creative juices flow and become reality. I’ve watched that bunch every chance that you’re interacting with, great way to get old and stay young.
I think that you ought to focus on the engine which it already has. It looks as though it is probably a very interesting engine in its own right. Wouldn't it be a shame to separate the original engine from the chassis? Perhaps there are good reasons for breaking this up but I would have thought that originality counts for a lot. You use the term Edwardian loosely, most Edwardian, i.e. pre-1910, aero engines would be very rare, limited hours museum specimens. Most of the aero-engined cars which inspire you would have benefitted from the vast amount of war-surplus stock sold off at scrap metal rates after 1919 (and therefore are strictly Georgian). That said, good luck with this one, I'm sure it will be an interesting project to follow.
Nothing ventured NOTHING GAINED!! Wonderful project- Go for it you've the skills and passion, Job done. Reach out to Jay Leno perhaps .. he has a love of turn of the century vehicles, and reproduces old parts I believe, also look for an Australian guy Rod Hatfield and his home built "special "

My "26" Model T Ford speedster is not of the caliber your car will be when you're finished, but it's as close as my budget will ever allow me to get to an Edwardian car. Like you I started with just a chassis and big dreams. I fell in love with the Edwardians about 5 years ago and I knew I had to try my best. Ivan will get you through it. Cheers from a shed in Iowa
Considering we both make automotive UA-cam videos how I haven't seen your channel before I have no idea but im super exited for this project, we need more pre war cars on UA-cam...yes im going to have to get one at some point too
That's a great start for what you want to build. Grab your Hemmings subscription. Pre 16, get in touch with those (old, Like me!) guys , collect everything you can, save it all. Still lots of early stuff here in USA. Plan a trip to Hershey PA. Oct., KEEP at it,,,,DUBS
Congratulations Dom, looks like a great start. I’m sure you will figure out the engine, but might I suggest you talk to Jobie Carter about a truck transmission from the era you are looking at. They would likely be strong enough to take the torque of any aero engine you end up with, if you can find one light enough. He might have some good ideas what to look for and maybe some contacts to talk to. Cheers from Canada. Tim
What you need now is a Liberty L12 aero engine. These date from the Great War, and were designed and built in the US. Being only 27 litres, and fairly light and compact, I think that it would fit the bill. A land speed record car, called the White Triplex, was constructed around 100 years ago, with THREE of these engines!
The Liberty V12s are the playthings of people who heat their Boathouses with soiled ten pound notes to keep their Mahogany Dual Cockpit Runabouts warm in the winter. Perhaps he could sell his house, all his tools, cars, and motorbikes, plus rent out some of his clothes on days where he isn't wearing them to get his hands on a good Liberty and some spares. The good ones of those things are eye-wateringly, BRUTALLY expensive these days, which is a shame, because it would be A FANTASTIC choice
Dom, everyone secretly wants an Edwardian racer. Most people are just dreamers and as my dad said to me when I was in my teens ..... never ever be a wasser. When I asked what a wasser was he said, one of those people that was always going to do such and such, but they never do. So I have followed his thinking ever since. Never regretted it for a minute. I'm 73 & 3 days ago I made the first test run in my land speed record streamliner that is capable of running over 500mph. Old is a state of mind I refuse to get in to.
Great that you've managed to get a rolling chassis. Good luck with the project, and I do like the sound of the "Ranalah Rocket", sounds like a proper vintage race-car name.
Well done dom. the smile on your face says it all. Build the car you want it’s a once 0:11 in a life time it’s your dream my friend and ours to enjoy with you. ⭐️. And thanks for sharing your dream 👍. Good luck buddy
Hi Dom, a bit of a long shot but last weekend I was at Old Warden aerodrome to see the shuttleworth collection, one thing that I did notice was quite a few first world war aero engines in the sheds, maybe they might be interested in parting with one, it could be good media coverage for both of you, good luck, I love the channel.
No chance of them parting with aero engines. You've more chance of finding one buried in yer garden! Old Warden is certainly worth a visit in any case though.
Best of luck Dom, finding an inline, pre 1918 engine will be pretty tough, as most aero engines were either radial or rotary units and it wasn't until the BE2 fighter bomber that inlines became popular and we're made by Rolls Royce (very expensive) and the German equivalent, Daimler Benz (as rare as hens teeth due to the scrapping of WW1 German aircraft. Maybe, if you can find one, a very early Gypsy Major 6 cylinder inline engine may be your best bet. It was used extensively by the De Havilland Aircraft Co almost from their inception and delivered good reliable horsepower in all their variants. Only problem was that they were mounted inverted which would require some massive conversion work to turn it cylinders up! The torque from most aero engines means that you could get away with a two or three speed gearbox, possibly one out of a boat and it would come with a reverse gear for when you have to get out of the Armco after the rest brakes fail! 🤣🤣🤣
while much later and mid engined, the Stanton Crop Duster Special used an inverted 4 cylinder De Havilland engine from a Tiger Moth, some of the engine solutions may apply, this car is still running and was at Goodwood in 2009, but I think a six cylinder would work well visually with the Rochet's long wheelbase and to my ear Ranalah Rochet sounds more period than Ranalah Rocket ua-cam.com/video/75fQR2qp2Xo/v-deo.html
If he's allowed WW1 engines, either Hispano-Suizas, or Bugatti aero engines, but he may have to sell the Porsche, and maybe the house to buy one 😳 .... can't really go wrong with a Napier Lion or Sea Lion variant, either. No aero engines from that time period are inexpensive, though, so I'm sure he's in for a penny, in for a pound.
Having visited Brooklands earlier in the year, I totally get your fascination for such a *potential* beast. The simplicity is alluring for sure. But the power.. well that's gonna be something else. I've told loads of people I meet about your channel and your Ranalaghs. Look forward to seeing this l, and the Porcshe one day
Great to hear you are beginning your Edwardian racer project. I was at Shelsley Walsh (the world's oldest motorsport track) today (VSCC meeting), watching some of these vintage beasts attack the hill.
Oh! You are building my Dream! Cept I've got no place to run one round here. Local racetrack is now an industrial park! I shall keep an eye on your progress over the next xxx years! Good Luck! There has been some 1910 (ish) aeroengines recently manufactured for some (?) replica aircraft for the airshow circuit n reenactment shows. I became aware of them when researching old marine engines. I don't know the status of the project to recreated the old engines. Drop me a line n I'll see if I can find a contact, possibly through the local Aircraft Museum. A while ago, the Museum members built a replica (now hanging in their hanger) of the Gibson Twinplane that was the first All Canadian airplane (aeroplane?) that flew in 1909 (I think). While it has a good dummy engine, the original 6 cylinder engine was built locally n is sitting in the storage room of some museum! Anyway, I wasn't involved in either of these 2 projects but I think that I can run down some contacts if no one else can get you there. On another note, I've seen recently a website for a company producing "80% Sized Copies of Significant Cars" from the prewar era (Bentlies, SS100 Jags, etc) (Obviously play toys for them folks who have got too much money") They must hsve copied their engines from an original one. (Or Perhars they're using Honda or Perkins industrial engines !? Perhaps 6 cyl Ford Marine Diesel engines !?) Gus the Gearhead!
I will bet that your Edwardian club will be full of enthusiastic members who will love to share their passion for these old racers. I suspect more than a few of them will have part "stashes" and might be able to assist with some of the items you will need.
Awesome. Hope the right engine turns up. By that i mean as much horsepower and as many cylinders as possible. Low mounted for stability. If its called "Rocket", it might earn the nickname "damp squib" if its not able to overtake Ivan....
Great job securing the chassis, now the fun and games begin finding all the other parts. Stumbled on this page on f/book (aero - engine race cars , boats , bikes ,ect might have some contacts. Good luck.
I think this is one of the most exciting new mechanical projects on UA-cam, Allen Millyard level! And I get the replica thing, it's like your 356; for tens (or hundreds) of thousands less you could be driving something that 99% of people wouldn't know was any different from the Stuttgart original...but you would.
I agree fully with your purchase decision Dom; firstly you got the intro and the thumbs up from fellow knowledgeable enthusiasts on Edwardians, and secondly you fell in love with the looks of the (potential) beast and this is SO important as a future driving force. So in a nutshell, you did correctly in securing this rolling chassis and don't eat yourself up about the decision, you will get used to it very, very shortly and start smiling to yourself about it! Sometimes you just HAVE to snap these things up whilst they are on offer. Now you only need a straight eight or a V12 to go in it, but will one fit length wise?? !!
Fantastic my friend!! I am so excited for you. I have been slowly putting together a machine shop to support my build of a 1928 Morgan/GN special. I will be looking for a GN rear here in the states mainly but I believe I am going to use an MG rear and a transmission. That is so awesome that you found such a gem!! I am looking forward to seeing you builds.
just found your channel and im subscribed, i love this era of autos. I have family who restore pre-war Bugatti's and race them in the UK, these are from the balls out days of racing which was the best. good hunting for the bits and pieces, this will be fun.
Have you considered contacting Guy Martin with a view to making it a shared project? It's the sort of thing that he has been involved in before. There might even be a TV series in it for you. If all else falls, Guy has, (or at least had) a working Merlin engine! Not the era you're talking about, I know, but he may have contacts that you could follow. There are a number of aircraft museums that have static displays of old engines that they might be persuaded to loan/part with. Good luck with the project, I'll be following along.
Wow, a brilliant start on your project journey 👏 congratulations. I have a 1930 Ford model A that i drive daily....not as early, or as rare....but definitely lots of fun! Especially to park in lidl car park for the shopping! 😊
Congratulations Dom, on securing the foundation for your dream project! These things do not happen by chance, but by following your heart and taking the first step. The stars will align and it will gradually evolve.
This has been a life long dream of mine also, while I’m still dreaming I get to live it vicariously through you Dom. All of your content is of the upmost quality and interest to all members of the car fancy. Really very happy for you and couldn’t be happening to a more deserving gent. Bravo 👏
Excellent presentation to camera Dom. You’ve convinced me to follow this one with great interest. Can’t wait to see you getting your hands dirty (dirtier 😀)!
Hiya Dom totally awesome and made up 4 ya my friend such a awesome car I must confess that I've never heard of your car before. I thought a Donnet was such a obscure French car from that era around Ww1. Looking forward to this project and can appreciate it will take a long time to build, liking the sound of the Ranalah Rocket too. Great video as always keep up the outstanding work ❤
Ranalah Rochet Racing, it's brilliant ! Go with it Dom, it's a no brainer. I like the idea of using some different aero engine. With enough belief you will find it.
Oh wow! Went to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley on Thursday. Little did I know I would be following a master class on how it was built 😜. Good luck Dom. looking forward to this one.
Greetings! Just found your page. I love aero engined cars as well and maybe I'll be able to build one some day. Anyway, terrific start to your project! The right engine will find you. Maybe an OX-5, maybe something else. I wonder if Renault or another French manufacturer built aero engines at that time. The other possibility could be a Hispano - Suiza V8. Transmission choices could be from large buses or heavy-duty commercial trucks.
So awesome!!! This will be a long term labor of love. And we will watch it happen! Been watching Croker vs. Rover for 2 yrs now, so don't worry about the time span! Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Good luck with the aero engined car Dom, you’ve already nailed the name. I’m exited for you and very much look forward to your new adventure, can’t wait!
As neat as all your other projects are, I think I am more excited about this than anything else you have done. I've always liked the idea of an early single seat "racer". I'm quite looking forward to see the progression of this into a "Special". 👍👍
Hey Dom...... For me ....any of your content is good to see....your Journey is always interesting to watch and I cant wait for each video......each project is individual and good to see progress....Porsche, Bikes, Pedal Cars, Ranalah's.....all good....thanks for all the hard work!
My money would be on the Hispano-Suiza 8, the main water cooled aero engine used by the Allies in WW1 and produced in Spain, France, the US and the UK. That said just finding one will be, erm, tricky. In any case, good luck and really looking forward to the journey you are taking us on with this and all your other projects.
Hi Dom, JUST AMAZING we don't have anything like this in New Zealand (New Zealanders correct me if i am wrong) I hope you get this done in 1 year or 5 years I'll still be watching love you videos ❤❤
Well Don you have done it again what a project hopefully you will pick up the right engine , looking at the original car was certainly a impressive vehicle in its day but guessing it will be missing the carriage roof . Ps Give Jay a good hug from as all .
Brilliant, shame the vdub had to go being a fellow enthusiast but wow this is so cool. I'd also recommend shed racing. My sis put me onto that one, Ivan's a mine of information and a national treasure. Cheers C
This is also a dream of mine for hillcliming in the VSCC! Ranalah rocket is extremely fitting, my favorite VSCC car is the cyclekart 'Lil Miss bacfire' all stretched out and low to the ground, beautiful. I so cant wait to see your progress on this one
Looking forward to this build Dom. I am pretty sure Guy Martin did something with an airplane engine. Try and get in touch with him. Imagine a collaboration with Guy and yourself. That would be amazing.
Can't wait to see u work on that the rocket name sounds good I think a lot of ur questions will be answered when u find the parts that look and feel right wish u all the best on it
Outstanding we always say you never stop learning fantastic project from a vintage austin man outstanding
Great to see some progress on the 356
Don't even worry about the Porsche. All of your projects are amazing. Jump back and forth as you get parts and time This aero car will be a great build!

@@mumbles2000there is a Tiger Moth powered Dellage still competing today :)
Look forward to seeing this l, and the Porcshe one day
SUPER! I see Porsches every day. Gonna call you Caractacus Potts. Make it fly!
Perhaps 6 cyl Ford Marine Diesel engines !?)
Gus the Gearhead!
The Ranalah Rocket 🚀 with the number of cylinders of the engine after it would be cool Dom 😎
I'm heading to Donington Park this Sunday, hoping to see some of these Edwardians. Hopefully one day I will see your car there too 😊
I hope so too!
We've got a 1911 Rochet Schneider car with engine type 10200, it is very similar to yours but it has wooden wheels on 880/120 bead edje tyres.
You could try asking The Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford airfield to help you source an engine. Good luck👍
Reminds me of my go-kart at the ripe old age of 12 😉
just found your channel and im subscribed, i love this era of autos.
Hiya Dom totally awesome and made up 4 ya my friend such a awesome car
I must confess that I've never heard of your car before. I thought a Donnet was such a obscure French car from that era around Ww1. Looking forward to this project and can appreciate it will take a long time to build, liking the sound of the Ranalah Rocket too. Great video as always keep up the outstanding work ❤
Love watching your projects, can't wait for you to finish one, but must say the Aero engine project will be very interesting
Ranalah Rochet Racing, it's brilliant ! Go with it Dom, it's a no brainer. I like the idea of using some different aero engine. With enough belief you will find it.
What a fab project… I shall eagerly await each episode with antici…….pation.
All the luck in the world can't wait to see how you get on
I am also building a special from that period. It's a big challenge but I want something different from every other car on the road.
Hi Dom , looking forward to the build mate , I'm sure the parts will come in once people get wind of hour project.
Good luck mate .regards Franko
So awesome!!! This will be a long term labor of love. And we will watch it happen!
Been watching Croker vs. Rover for 2 yrs now, so don't worry about the time span!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Fantastic to follow your dream...looking forward to the build...
Amazing Dom….congratulations…living the dream and we are along for the ride…..loving it….
A Napier Lion would be a very cool engine choice. It's a Broad Arrow or W-12 configuration. 3 banks of 4 cylinders.
Very cool project. I'm building a hot rod myself, and this is similar in some ways, but keeping to parts and stuff made pre 1918 sure is a challenge!
Looking forward to this adventure!!! Life is highways and byways 😉
Hello from California, incredible project, best of luck. It's a select few whose car's gearshift is outside the car.
jump back and forth to all of the projects - love them all!!!
Brilliant good luck with the project, I'm always looking for interesting autos and parts will leap and eye out for you .
Thanks 👍
I think an early French aero engine would be most fitting for the chassis and likely possible.. best of luck
Nice one Dom....wishing you all the luck in getting it on the road.
Thanks 👍
Love this build !!
Watching your reaction from the Hill Climb , yep that checks out. I subscribed
It has to be the Ranalah Racing, I love it - thanks Dom for adding this to you projects and I know it will be a great build!
Just get the mechanics done and leave the body as is for now. Looks so cool. Good luck with the search for the engine
Hey Dom...... For me ....any of your content is good to see....your Journey is always interesting to watch and I cant wait for each video......each project is individual and good to see progress....Porsche, Bikes, Pedal Cars, Ranalah's.....all good....thanks for all the hard work!
Fantastic Dom....glad you got started on your Edwardian adventure....will keep watching with interest. Best of luck ....
As another Kiwi, I fully concur with this gentleman’s comment!
Amazing project... Can't wait to follow your journey .
That's a great idea.
Now that sounds like a plan Guy Martin is absolutely brilliant and amazing too
Can't wait to see u work on that the rocket name sounds good I think a lot of ur questions will be answered when u find the parts that look and feel right wish u all the best on it
