You need to recruitAllen Millyard to the team, he's nearly finished rebuilding the Norton Nemesis V8 and having made the Flying Millyard. a 5 litre Aero engined motor cycle, you two would have a lot in common.

    • @David-pv8ph
      @David-pv8ph 6 місяців тому +26

I was also thinking exactly the same. I can see it now - Dom banging out parts on the plasma table like they're going out of fashion. Reciprocal visits to Millard Manor where bits of metal get magically turned into parts using nothing more than an old hacksaw, a lathe and milling machine. Tracey could go into full cake production mode, and even Charlie Weaver could be employed to keep Wendy occupied! Even if this doesn't pan out, a field visit to see each other's man caves must surely be on the cards? This sounds like a match made in heaven. The only problem will be explaining to Henry how long you need to borrow Allen for.......

Great to see the Mosquito build, my great grandfather was a joiner and worked on repairing them during the war, they once had one come in with incendiarys lodged in the wings from flying back under the path of the bombers following! We still have great granny's foot stool he made from mosquito ply, incredibly thin wood.

I'm an aerospace engineer who repaired and rebuilt helicopters out in places like Afghanistan and on the back of ships. A lot of those frame assembly drawings look the same, but it blows my mind that people are still working them to restore Birch ply Mosquito fuselages. Thank you so much for shining the spotlight on this inspiring work!

There is a guy in New Zealand (Avspecs) spent 27 years putting together a mosquito production process including all the jigs and moulds shown. He makes mosquitos fuselages and wings. I went to an aero museum in the States (Virginia Beach Air Museum) and saw a rebuilt flying mosquito awesome. I went to see the American Warbirds and found they had a collection of WWI and WWII aircraft from various nations. Well worth a visit. On another trip to Norfolk Virginia I saw one of the largest WWII Battleship Wisconsin berthed at Nauticus again a great visit for someone keen on military history. It’s a shame the UK was totally broke after WWII maybe we could have kept HMS Vanguard for posterity and visits. It would have been great to have as well as the Cruiser Belfast moored on the Thames.

Garfield Wood. The Great Lakes area of the USA had an active boat racing series - Gold Cup - started in 1904. It drew tens of thousands of spectators to the shores of the lake cities. Detroit was the main hub. A handful of daring racers modified the hull shapes & crammed anything with more power between the stringers including, as you’ve noted aircraft engines. Looking forward to the build!

I just got your video in my recommendations and I immediately subbed! The idea and the proces of building a car around that engine has a huge appeal to me.
The tour of the Retrotec workshop was great, what an amount of skill and knowledge. The thrill of seeing a Bf109-E flying somewhere in the future is very thrilling.
And all this reminds me how lucky I am. I just found a new job after the closure of the company where I worked for more than 25 years in a production environment.
The first commission in that job is the restauration of a 1938 diesel locomotive, and working on something that old is so satisfying. It needs a lot of dedication and ingenuity to get things done.
It would be cool to see some of that air foil shaped tube used in the car build, the pulling bench was really a gigantic version of a pulling bench as used in silver and goldsmithing.

I jokingly suggested a straight-eight or a V12 when you first found the chassis. Now you just have to tame that 300 plus Horse-power and get it to the rear wheels , without them collapsing around their hubs! Good luck!

Being able to track the history of a part back to the original billet of metal that it was created from was critical because a part failure in the field could trigger an inspection order for all the other parts made from that billet.

Dom that was an incredible video! Super interesting in all respects. As a child I thought that those wooden bombers were bogus, I mean everyone else was flying metal planes, no? Then after checking out some WW 2 aircraft, I realized the thickness of the metal wasn't that impressive, nor any more structurally sound than a well made wooden one. When viewing the hull halves and bulkheads I was thinking of wooden boat construction. Then Garr Wood came up. I know of Garr Woods as a racer and boat builder. I initially started watching your channel becasue of the 356 A (an am still wanting to see more) but this Areocar is extreemly cool, I envison it with a long pointed tail, so cool! Hi Dominic,
Wow, this is houng to be an interesting project, thank you for your time to film and allow us to share it.
What about having a word with Mr.Duncan Pitaway who owns the Beast of Turin FIAT car, he might be able to point you in the direction of building such a machine. Utterly bonkers and eccentric but a very interesting person involved in the Edwardian racing scene.
    Rgds, Peter.

If you want an air start they have been used and are still used on trucks here in Australia. It could be modified to use on your engine. Also Russian V12 tank engines use a similar port injection air system.

Wow! What an amazing episode. Great to see Retrotec and get an insight into what they do. We have some amazing and talented engineers in this country. It's so important that we celebrate these people and work to get young people involved. Many thanks for sharing your world with us.

Fabricate the intake to fit American predator carbs, 950cfm have one for every 2 cylinders.
If you want your intake on the inside it's quite tricky, you will need a new camshaft making..... good excuse for a modern profile, more degrees etc?
Fit electronic ignition be fairly simple..
You could have tuned length exhaust headers!

Awesome for getting an engine, now the parts hunts begin, :) ,only big thought is whoever gets to drive it really will have to be on their toes because of the power it will be putting out, and taking the time to learn how to drive it etc... great job Dom, looking forward to all of the videos that we will be able to watch and see the restoration/ manufacture on the aero car!

This turned up in my recommended list, don't know why - probably the aviation theme as I'm a pilot and watch a bit of aviaiton stuff... anyway, watched it all - it would have been nice to start with a quick precis of what you are trying to achieve for those of us joining the conversation in the middle like me. :)

Some.....15 years ago? On a bike tour, we stumbled upon an open barn with a Dragon Rapide of all things. Rode down to visit and found someone to talk to who had been flying his home built from the grass strip. So many things to see, then the guy said, something about a Comet. Took me a few seconds to understand what he was talking about. The owner of the farm, was in the process of building a copy, not a replica, a copy from original drawings, of a DH Comet racer. He had mostly finished the fuselage, which wasn't built of plywood like a mosquito, but of individual strips of birch. Kind of like plywood that was made in place around the fuselage? Fascinating place and fascinating guy. Never actually met him, he died not long after. Several of his projects are now in New Zealand and are slowly being finished.

I sincerely hope that the bottom end of the engine is good. The thought of 12 lots of big ends and regrinding the crankshaft makes me shiver, and I wouldn't even be paying for it. Good luck and best wishes.

Fascinating project. If you need to reduce the output just don't floor the throttle just like you do in a road car, or if you don't trust yourself reduce pedal travel.

Dominic, there is a 1930's vintage film of a Gar Wood built Liberty engined boat on UA-cam, with the induction in the central V and the exhausts on the outsides of the V.
