You Should Watch Teenage mutant ninja turtles
Btw.. Tobey Maguire had a small role in "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas".
It's a panda, I thought it was a bear...😂
but there is also Tom Cruise hidding there ^^ G5 and Robert Downey JR
maybe next the Boondock saints also great movie
RDJ would have won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar if he (and the other nominees) weren’t up against Heath Ledger for “The Dark Knight.”
"I don't drop character until I've done the DVD commentary", fun fact, RDJ did the DVD commentary in-character
For real???
@@lolmao500 For real, and its SPECTAULAR
@@lolmao500 Yeah, and at the end, when he took off the wig and contact lenses, he switched to the Australian accent. :)
The commentary in character is epic!!!
That's not a fun fact, its a hilariously fun fact!!!!
Funniest thing is that Tom Cruise actually asked to play this role, wanted fat hands and came up with his dance himself
I didn't even recognize Cruise until the final act - it was obviously so out of character for him - he hasn't been in a comedic role since Risky Business, 25 years prior. Since then, he's had several comedy roles - this role showed he still had it...
Tom knows what sells on camera. His character was the cherry on top of this fantastic movie.
He actually came up with the idea for the character after Stiller sent him an early copy of the script... it didn't have anything about the studio, originally
The fat suit and dance number were "sine qua non" conditions locked in Tom Cruise contract, that they signed before writing the final script.
@@dansiegel995 Same! I didn't get realize it was him until the very end.
They actually showed the movie to the NAACP before it was publicly released to make sure the point of Kirk Lazarus came across, and it did.
As a firm member of the black community for almost 26 years now I've never heard 1 complaint about rdj performance in this movie.
I think he got a pass, in part, because he was calling out white washing and black face.
I agree, RDJ was harlarioudsly over the top. He is a master actor.
This is a very good comment that would be a great comment, if you are in your 30s or 40s.
@@notabritperse 🧐
People don’t understand satire these days 😂 and as a firm member of the community for 32 years who went to see this movie in theaters at 18 with other black people I concur !
13:23 Thats why RDJ is in blackface. If it was an actual black guy this joke would never work. This movie is a masterpiece.
IKR
yea that's the point iwas like ok ' this is the point they're making with that ' :)
@@MaryCherryOfficial I can't believe people are criticizing you for your real reactions. I'm sure a lot of people reacted the same way when they first saw the movie, then slowly realized it's a satire as the movie went on.
@@ImAlsoMerobiba I saw this movie when it was first released in theaters (I was probably a few years younger than Mary is now).
And, no, I did not have a slow realization that it was satire...I realized it in between the Booty Sweat ad and the Satan's Alley trailer.
It really wasn't that hard to figure out from the beginning!
@@ImAlsoMerobiba yeah l don't think that's the case watching this in high school in 2016 everyone already knew it was a satire from the start
The best part about the movie was that Robert Downey Jr did stay in character throughout the entire DVD commentary.
My favorite part is when he gives Jack black sh*t for showing up late.
Stiller, Jack Black, and Downey doing this commentary is one of the best probably anywhere.
This is still one of my favorite comedy movies of all time, and Robert Downey Jr's role in this only a few months after Iron Man released, and got a Oscar nomination, so this was his year that dominoed to his massive success.
Baruchel is pronounced "Bare-Ruh-Shell" by the way.
Baruchel is pronounced "Bare-Ruh-Shell" by the way.
It's not, but I've given up trying to get non Jewish americans to pronounce it right. It's just not a sound that exists in english.
Les Grossman is Tom Cruise's greatest role.
RDJ's performance in this movie🔥
He was nominated for best supporting actor, but lost out to Heath Ledger's Joker.
@@willbeonekenobi Well, Ledger certainly deserved it more, both actors did great but not many can measure up to him in that role.
RDJ had was so conflicted on this role that he called Jamie Foxx to ask him if its ok to do it and if he should
Yeah and Jamie foxx said he was so good he played a better black man than he does 🤣🤣 of course he was joking.
He also consulted the NAACP as well
Robert Downey Jr. is the best part of this movie. Saying you can't do this anymore today is just idiotic. This is the whole gag of the movie. There is nothing racist about it.
True but there are so many snowflakes now that even rdj said it would be hard to do this role today.
This whole movie is top tier and it's disingenuous to not acknowledge how fantastic Stiller, Black and Baruchel were.
The movie on the "ipod" is an episode of Star Trek, the original series, called the Arena.
Good comedy is timeless, feelings are temporary. Don't be in feelings and just laugh at good comedy!!
Probably one of the funniest comedy movies ever made. RDJ and Tom Cruise made this movie Lol.
Actually Ben Stiller made this movie lol
@@n0body550 Unpopular opinion here: Matthew McConaughey made this movie o.o
@@deathsaidhello I mean Ben Stiller created and directed it.
@@n0body550 but did Ben Stiller get his own TiVo?
No, I didnt think so.
Try again.
Remember when comedies were allowed to be funny, offensive, and outrageous?
They still are
Movies in general are trash now go watch flagrant 2 on youtube or a comedy special on Netflix comedy is still the same as it used to be the only difference is how we consume it
This movie was from 2008 not 1978...Settle down boomer.
people protested this film...for the use of the R word...so idk what you are talking about
Somebody asked Mel Brooks if he could make Blazing Saddles today. He said " we couldn't make it THEN but we did it anyway"
Thanos: I’ve grown tire of you people
TT RDJ Variant: What do you mean *YOU* people?
Thanos (Surprised Pikachu face)
I don’t think either of those characters were in this movie? You have your movies confused.
@@tonysoto8949 r/whooosh
@@tonysoto8949 Bro seriously…?
Thanos: C a n c e l l e d
The Whole Movie is a Satire of The Movie industry in general.
the only stuff that didnt age well was the r word stuff..and what was the point of the agents son? idk it seemed of pour taste...
As an Australian I've actually always loved Robert Downey jr's Australian accent
That scene ben stiller dying from being shot from behind by the VC...that's from the movie "Platoon". It show how war change a person in so many ways and at so many levels.
Why do young people not understand rdj’s role in this? How do they not understand satire? Love the film regardless
It seem's as though she doesn't understand the concept of a comedy. She's acting as if this movie is suppose to be taken seriously.
Fun Fact: “I don’t drop character until I don the the DVD commentary.” RDJ remained in character on the actual commentary for this movie.
Was his character in the commentary Sgt. Osiris or Kirk Lazarus?
@@andrewe2057 Osiris lol.
Hahaha! I never knew that. Nice touch!
RDJ got an Oscar nomination for this role. Put some respect on Kirk Lazarus's name.
Mary: I didn’t know you could watch movies on your iPod!
Me: Ouch, my age!
The reason this movie wouldn't fly nowadays is because some younger people don't understand jokes or satire and companies are too afraid to offend that general public. I'm happy you enjoyed it though.
That argument has been used so much lately. Just a few months ago someone asked Mel Brooks if Blazing Saddles could be made today. He said it couldn't be made in the 70's, but they did it anyways. Sure, you probably couldn't make a blockbuster with this style of humor, and sure the people who don't understand satire are able to voice their complaints more loudly because of social media. But this movie could still easily get made today.
It's perfectly fine for younger people to not watch a movie. It happens with plenty of other movies not geared towards them. Let them whine and miss out.
If you have the DVD, the commentary track may be one of the best ever. RDJ does the entire commentary in character.
I find it funny how its always the non black community find this offensive while the actual black community find this hilarious and support this 100%
I seen this movie in theaters and it was just as hilarious then and now. No complaints
Funny story: RDJ's character was originally supposed to be Irish, but RDJ was more comfortable doing an Australian accent and had it changed.
Director explodes into a million bits
"Is he dead? For the rest of the movie?"
xDD
Tom cruise had two requirements to play the role- he wanted big hands and wanted to dance. Funny movie
5:43 they could still get away with it, if people still understood satire.
Jo Jo Rabbit worked just fine.
McConaughey delivering Tivo to the jungle is the funniest part to me. Best agent ever.
Probably one of the best and funniest satire/comedy movies modern hollywood has ever produced! 😍😂
RDJ did in fact stay in character until the dvd commentary
That was an original episode of Star Trek with Captain Kirk fighting a Gorn creature
Never heard any of me black friends complain of this, they laughed harder than me while watching this movie 🤣
You left out Tom Cruse's credits dance? YOU LEFT OUT TOM CRUSE'S CREDITS DANCE?!?!?!
Tropic Thunder was one of my favorite comedy movies ever especially with that one scene with Tom Cruise that made me lmao.
I can't believe you left out the ending of Tom dancing 👀
i don't edit my videos
That Mary thinks you could actually have gotten away with doing blackface instead of casting a black actor in 2008 is really cute.
They did. RDJ got an academy award nomination for it.
@@crankfastle8138 For casting a white actor to play a white character that's doing black face, not instead of a black character. The entire point of the character is the blackface, in what world do you think that Kirk Lazarus was supposed to be black?
You missed the ENTIRE point of his character.
@@crankfastle8138 Yeah except the role was not of a black man, it was of a white man in blackface.
That's the difference.
@@crankfastle8138 Are you really that slow?
I remember the first time I saw this I didn't realize that was Tom Cruise til the end☠
Same. Somehow in the theater I didn’t notice lol.
Same! They hid it REALLY well back then. Nobody knew he was in it
this is one of the best comedies ever made
Jay was the real hero in this. He made everyone realize who they really are
"Man, I don't drop virtue signalling 'til I done the UA-cam commentary."
Jamie Foxx actually talks about RDJ playing this role on Joe Rogan.
Simple Jack is a in part parody of the movie I Am Sam starring Sean Penn.
Best fact about this film. RDJ did indeed stay in character for the DVD commentary. And was Oscar nominated for Best Supporting Actor 😅
This will always be my favorite Robert Downey Jr role
This & his performance in Less Than Zero. His work in Chances Are is just slightly behind those. He has such great comedic timing.
We the black delegation accepts RDJ in this movie.
Fun fact: Tom Cruise was asked to do the role, and he gave the conditions that he'd do it only if he got to have fat hands and dance.
Mary about to enrage nerds everywhere confusing Star Trek for Star Wars lol
The ancient conflict.
Robert Downey Jr. got a much deserved Oscar nomination for his performance. Everyone loved it.
P.S. Matthew McConaughey is quietly one of the funniest people in this movie.
Matt usually is.
@@Caseytify he played a crazy truck driver opposite Bill Maury. One of the funniest damn things I've seen
Tom Cruise was doing Harvey Weinstein. Every character in this had their own point.
When Alpa Chino said his partner's name was Lance, and he was referring to Lance Bass from NSYNC. Who he kissed at the awards ceremony.
He actually didnt kiss him, RDJ calls one of them out on commentary he was probably supposed to but idk who i assume lance
I had forgotten about the “trailer” with Downey’s character in a movie with Tobey Maguire, who played Spiderman in the original trilogy. 8 years later, he’s in “Captain America: Civil War” where his character is recruiting Spiderman into The Avengers.
It took me years to find out that the title, Satan's Alley, is slang for buggery. And then years tonfind out what buggery meant
This movie is a classic.... you obviously havent seen Platoon or Apocalypse now (or the whole story of the filming of that movie) or you would have gotten a whole lot more references lol
What RDJr did with the character is the stuff of legends. Technically it shouldn't work, but not only it works, but his delivery also gave us so many quotes that became part of pop culture.
There is an underrated Ben Stiller directed movie called The Cable Guy if you’re interested, and it stars Jim Carrey.
@@yt45204 Maybe there’s another movie with a similar name? I’m talking about the 1996 one.
'why couldn't they use a black guy for this role?''..... because this is way funnier
Every time nick nolte talks all i hear is " i have spoken" hahahahaha loved this movie
LOL "oh no i taught it was a bear. Well it was a panda bear" Made me laugh so hard
If I remember correctly, when Ben Stiller approached Tom Cruise for the movie (which he never thought he'd accept) all Tom said is that he wanted "fat fingers." Tom basically created the whole role of Les Grossman, including that dance.
Where was the dance here??????
I loved "She's Out of My League" starring Jay Baruchel, I think Mary would love it too.
Was going to recommend that myself. :)
Roberts role was phenomenally hilarious! Best character of the movie 🤣
Ben Stiller comes from a family in show business. His mother was Ann Meara and his dad was Jerry Stiller - both who have been in films and especially on television for years. Acting and comedy is on his blood.
Actually the reason why you believe that it's uncomfortable to laugh at few jokes is because recent society has indoctrinated everyone to believe that comedy is offensive. Take blazing saddles. What a movie🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ben Stiller is very talented. He does alot of writing & producing too. He's great in Meet the Parents with Robert De Niro. Dodgeball is a must watch of his too.
One of the best comedies in the last decade!
This is such a meta movie. You’d think people would fall out of favour with it considering some of the controversial subject matters. But I think it’s a testament to the films commentary on those subjects that it still holds up.
Robert downeys playing as a method actor. It’s actually movie meant for comedy, I still laugh at this movie every time I watch it.
Tropic Thunder is the reason many understand the problems with blackface; the filmmakers consciously used this opportunity to educate. Brilliant
This movie is such meta satire. It is criticizing so many other movies and the industry, while also criticizing itself and all the other movies inside this movie.
RDJ was doing a parody of Russel Crowe (brilliant method actor) and as you know, from Australia.
It was mentioned early in the movie that RDJ was from Australia….
They didn't cast a black guy because RDj was making fun of people playing blackface AND method actors.
gotcha (in the end i mentioned it's a parody)
@@MaryCherryOfficial he got an academy award nomination for it. Nobody really was that worried about it.
There was actually more controversy over the way Ben Stiller played an actor portraying a man with intellectual disability, more than RDJ in blackface.
14:26 "is this star wars?" me: dies a little inside
“Man, I don’t drop character until I’ve done a DVD commentary.” And if you watch the Tropic Thunder movie with commentary he is IN character the whole time lmao
To be fair Mary your Aussie accent is basically non existent lmao
3:35 That's a parody of a famous scene from Platoon
12:50 That's a parody of Ozzy Osbourne's famous moment ripping the head off a stuffed bat on stage during a concert
I ADORE this movie. If you want another surreal comedy, I recommend Airplane! (1980)
The guy that played the Vietnam veteran Tayback (Nick Nolte,) also played Kuiil the Ughnaught in The Mandalorian.
this is one of my fav. movies. the references, the way RDJ is so in-character that even the black guy is telling him " what you mean you people" haha. the whole cast in this movie is legit on point. hope there is a part 2 or something such later on.
Tropic Thunder is one of my one of my favourite movies of all time.
The director’s death was unexpected and hilarious. Also Tom Cruise was my favourite part of this film, Les Grossman is one of his most iconic roles. His monologue and threat to Flaming Dragon is the funniest part of the film imo, both parts had me crying of laughter the first time I watched the film.
This entire movie is satire of the movie industry and a lot of it is really subtle. If you haven’t really watched a lot of different movies you might not get some of the jokes.
Everyone begging for the dance scene is what got me for this film I didn't think they'd love pop music.
Most people don't actually get this: all the actors were firing blanks, not actual rounds.
“ OMG is he dead for the rest of the movie? ”
(Jack Black) “ YEAAAH!!! ”
I love to watch reactions to this movie. It really pits what people think they're allowed to find funny vs what they ACTUALLY find funny.
Simple Jack was more than likely a parody of when Cuba Gooding, Jr. played Radio after winning the Oscar for Jerry McGuire. His career kind of tanked after that.
I loved Nick Nolte's line read "take 'em of the fucking grid!"
The reason the actors don’t shoot the soldiers is because those are movie prop guns, loaded with blanks.
Oh and the satire of the movie Platoon totally was funny because that movie was intense. You mentioned the over acting at the beginning with Ben Stiller getting shot. That was a scene from Platoon. A poetic tragic moment in the movie and they went light with it. Loved this light parody. See ya next time.
"Goodbye mama, now you can have ice cream in heaven! I'll see you again tonight when I go to bed in my head movies. But this head movie makes my eyes rain!"
Tom Cruise never let's me down, except for the mummy remake
Fun Fact: The kid who was the leader of the Flaming Dragon played the voice of Beast Boy in the DCAU movies Mary.
Did you see the End Credit With Tom Cruise Dancing?
They couldn't cast a black actor in that role because it wouldn't be the same character Kirk Lazarus is an actual white guy who had a surgery to become black that would make sense if it was a black actor
Well, they _could_ have used done some White Chicks thing but I doubt it would have worked.
Ben Stiller is CRAZY talented.
You should check out “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”
He starred and directed it as well, and it’s a great film.
Great movie. Probably one of the best comedies of the last 20+ years. It's actually a triumph of comedy/cinema.
All the actors had blanks instead of real bullets. That is why they never "shot" anyone.
