"The Matrix" is not just another film. This movie has DEFINED an entire generation of sci-fi film fans! In the same way that the original "Star Wars" did. One only wonders what the next generation-defining sci-fi film will be, because I imagine it will be just as mind-bendingly DEEP.
Avatar was advertised as one when it came out. Infinity war and endgame kinda were for harboring such a large cast of "main" characters and continued storylines. I would agree that inception had to have been.
I was thinking the same thing. I saw The Matrix in college a year or two after release and got to have that Star Wars mind-blown experience. And though it may not be ESB, the anticipation of the sequel. Reading this discussion I thought it was too early for the next phenomenon, then I did the math. 22 years and 22 years, wow.
I always think of Trinity falling in love with Neo in the same terms as Neo knocking over the vase. The Oracle told Trinity that she would fall in love with the One. Then Morpheus keeps telling everyone Neo is the One. Would Trinity have fallen in love with Neo if the Oracle hadn't said anything?
Yes. They fought agents together and he pulled her out of a crashing helicopter. just because there was no anakin/padme scene doesn't mean it didn't develop well. people can fall in love wordlessly... Mary doesn't know that lol
They had been watching Neo for a while and it was over that course that Trinity began falling in love with him. So, atleast from her perspective, it wasn't as sudden as it seems.
There's the line in the opening scene where Cypher asks Trinity if she thinks Neo is the One. Trinity says it doesn't matter what she believes, but one must evaluate that in the context of her being told by the Oracle that the man she loves will be the One. If she thinks he's the One, it follows that she would necessarily be in love with him. That she doesn't instantly reject the concept but instead dodges the question speaks to how long she's been ruminating on the matter.
Let's see. I was 40 when this movie came out and was 37 when Mary was born. I don't recall feeling particularly old in 1983. I WAS probably under the influence of about six hits of acid, a metric shit-ton of cocaine, a bit of hash, and nearly a fifth of vodka. Unless it was the weekend when I partied.
Me: "Haha, I remember wishing I could get that phone Morpheus sends to Neo. It was so badass and cool looking!" Mary: "Oh my lord, what an old phone! It's so funny!" Me: *Dies a little inside*
The Matrix was filmed in Sydney Australia at the Fox Studios and on locations within the city, which will explain why you recognize some of the locations Mary, because they filmed in Australia most of the cast are also Australian.
The W sisters are from Chicago and all the streets mentioned in the script are Chicago streets. I think they actually managed to get one or two scenes shot in Chicago but MOST of it is Sydney.
The Matrix is a great analogy tool for therapy. There are multiple applications to be made. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Morpheus asks Neo, "You think that's air your breathing now?" That, and Morpheus' facial expressions are on point and you can see the truth dawning in Neo's noggin when he gets up.
This movie spawned sooo much in the world of us nerds. It truly is a legend. If you enjoyed it enough to want more story and answers, the next two movies are personally recommended and packed with stuff.
You need to watch "The Animatrix" which is a series of animated short films that is the prequel to "The Matrix" film series and will explain a lot of the concepts in the movie
Some are prequels, some are side stories, and at least one is the first part of a bridge between this film and the second one (the second half is a video game that got a "meh" reception but I liked it).
Another film that has the bullet-dodging and was called a Matrix knock-off is "Equilibrium" starring Christian Bale but it's much more than that. It takes place in the future where emotions have been all but outlawed, people are medicated and all art has been banned. Well worth viewing.
A cool little thing about the scene in Martin Place is that the crowd they are walking through are all pairs of twins. It was meant to look like the programmer had copy-pasted a bunch to fill out the crowd. The filmmakers did an open casting call for identical twins so most of the twins in NSW are in that scene!
Long ago in the US, Laurence Fishbourne was interviewed on the PBS "Charlie Rose" show when the movie first came out. He described how he got hired. They said "We're making a genre film. It's a action movie in the style of Japanese anime. Are you interested?" He said "Hell, yea. Sign me on." They did not know he had been an anime junkie since the late '70s in the pre-otaku era !
It wasn't that Agent Smith 'died', the body he was occupying did and he just jumped into one of the people on the train. However, Neo obliterated him later :)
In the Matrix there's no bodies, everyone is a digital representation. Agents are programs running in the Matrix that can take over the representation of who they want.
@@muckit606 I do seem to recall that the Wachowskis confirmed at one point that when an Agent takes over a new body it does kill the person they jump into though. Not directly like they'd been shot but the Matrix ejects them like it did with Neo, just without the tracking program to let anyone find them.
Such a significant movie in the sci fi genre and pop culture in general, it blows my mind how many folks have never experienced it. Glad you're getting to now! 😄
Trinity is a soldier. As such, she's generally pretty reserved. You even made a remark about how much you liked her "poker-face." Unless she just comes out and tells you, you're not gonna get much from Trinity.
Fun fact: The Wachowski Brothers asked for a budget of 80 million dollars. This was denied and they were only given 11 Million. So they spent it ALL on Trinity's opening sequence. When they showed the opening scene to the executives, they were so impressed they greenlit the original budget that was requested.
This came out before serious social media and there was very little given away in the trailer. My friends and I went to see it in the afternoon opening day knowing only that it was that Keanu Hacker film. We weren’t excited we just literally had nothing better to do. Best surprise of my life.
Likewise. I'd seen some online comics on the official website that dropped hints, but I wasn't able to put them together until I actually saw the movie.
Keanu was also in the 1995 Cyberpunk film "Johnny Mnemonic" based off the short story by William Gibson, the author of "Neuromancer" the first major cyberpunk text in 1984.
"I've seen an agent punch through a concrete wall, men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air, yet their strength and their speed are still based in a world that is built on rules, because of that they will never be as strong or as fast as you can be." Best movie quote ever.
The other thing The Matrix really pioneered in Hollywood was fight choreography. There's a real night-and-day switch between pre-Matrix and post-Matrix fight scenes.
Many people thought this movie took a lot of concepts from Dark City which came out before this. It would be interesting to see you react to that as well and see if you can draw any parallels
The Matrix score has to be among the most underrated scores of all time, yet it's instantly iconic. No other score comes close to the level of detail that this score has.
When I saw this when this came out, I was like...6? And It kinda blew my mind. Before I knew anything about film making, I knew that what I saw, I liked the techniques used. Plus ever since then, I've been on the Keanu train, and never went off, so when you get to Reloaded and Revolutions, it does get amped up, and their not the most favorable movies to fans, but they have their merits.
@@richardpuente867 It's actually EASIER as a little kid, because as a little kid, you're not as mentally "trapped in the real world" as adults are. Probably why Morpheus told Neo that it's just "easier" to free the minds of children, rather than adults past a certain age.
When agents get killed they just take over another body of a human that is still plugged into the Matrix. So he did kill Agent Smith with the train. But then some one on the train just becomes Agent Smith and he starts his pursuit again. They just always come back.
"NEO" is an anagram of "ONE". It is also an anagram of "ENO", meaning that Brian Eno is The One. The Matrix made use of leftover sets from Dark City, another movie you might find of interest.
Me: Breakfast cooking *Mary Cherry new video dot* Me: Hmm. *Mary Cherry Finally Watched The Matrix* Me: Oh I'm gonna have a *good* time! (Double check the back of my head) good to go
You have to remember that Morpheus and Trinity have been watching him for some time. They never specify his long Trinity had been watching him (to fall in love) but she was convinced by the time they met.
You said that the love part of it was underdeveloped, but I kind of disagree. They alluded to Trinity following & watching Neo for a long time before they actually met. It may be a little stalkerish, but she knew a lot about him. lol "You like watching him, don't you?" - Cypher to Trinity at the beginning. And don't think of agents as being a body or person that can die. They are programs that take control of bodies & occupy them for their needs. So when Agent Smith 'died' from the train, the body he occupied is gone & he takes control of another body.
Similar films with the same themes that came out earlier are Dark City, 13th Floor and Johnny Mnemonic (in the year 2021 where Keanu Reeves could carry as much as 80 gigs of data in his head! Watch the trailer XD)
> carry as much as 80 gigs of data in his head Haha - reminded of the novelization of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982) - which contained dialogue about an enormous "50 megabyte" video game that was too big to fit on any of the smaller 24th Century computers in the Genesis Lab: "I don't want to delete anything," Carol said, "but I just spent six weeks debugging this subroutine, and I've got to have it." At a lab table nearby, Del March glanced at Vance Madison. Vance grimaced, and Carol caught him at it. "All right you guys," Carol said. "Del, have you been using my bubble bath again?" Del approached, hanging his head; Vance followed, walking with his easy slouch. They're like a couple of kids, Carol thought. Like kids? They are kids. They were only a few years older than David. "Geez, Carol," Del said, "it's just a little something-" "Del, there's got to be ninety-three computers on Spacelab. Why do you have to put your games on the main machine?" "They work a lot better," Vance said in his soft beautiful voice. "You can't play Boojum Hunt on anything less, Carol," Del said. "Hey, you ought to look at what we did to it. It's got a black hole with an accretion disk that will jump right out and grab you, and the graphics are fantastic. If I do say so myself. If we had a Three-D display …" "Why do I put up with this?" Carol groaned. The answer to that was obvious: Vance Madison and Del March were the two sharpest quark chemists in the field, and when they worked together their talents did not simply add, but multiplied. Every time they published a paper they got another load of invitations to scientific conferences. Genesis was lucky to have them, and Carol knew it. The two young scientists played together as well as they worked; unfortunately, what they liked to play was computer games. Del had tried to get her to play one once; she was not merely uninterested, she was totally disinterested. "What's the file name?" she asked. She felt too tired for patience. She turned back to the console. "Prepare to kill a file," she said to the computer. "Ok," it replied. "Don't kill it, Carol," Del said. "Come on, give us a break." She almost killed it anyway; Del's flakiness got to her worst when she was exhausted. "We'll keep it out of your hair from now on, Carol," Vance said. "I promise." Vance never said anything he did not mean. Carol relented. "Oh-all right. What's the file name?" "BH," Del said. "Got one in there called BS, too?" David asked. Del grinned sheepishly. Carol accessed one of the smaller lab computers. "Uh, Carol," Del said, "I don't think it'll fit in that one." "How big is it?" "Well … about fifty megs." "Christ on a crutch!" David said. "The program that swallowed Saturn." "We added a lot since you played it last," Del said defensively.
My friends and I saw this in the cinema in 1999, back when I was a sprightly 22 years old! Cannot believe this movie celebrates its 25th anniversary next year (along with The Phantom Menace)!
Neo was always the one. What the Oracle said is that he's got the gift, but he's just waiting on something, another life perhaps. So when he died and came back that was his next life.
You can actually pull off the neo mouth erase with makeup alone. Pour some liquid latex on a piece of glass and let it dry into a smooth piece. Then spirit gum the latex over your mouth and use base to make it skin tone. Just make sure to eat and hydrate first or it won't last long.
The concept isn't as novel as some may think. Think of The Sims where there are player characters and non-player characters (NPCs). Those of us who do things such as invent things are player characters and those of us who mindlessly just live out our lives are NPCs. Another feature of the plot of the movie is similar to The Terminator where the machines rise up and overtake humanity. There have been cyborgs among us. People may not think of them as cyborgs, but think about people with artificial hearts, etc. They are part human and part machine. Eventually, with the advancement of science, as more and more people seek immortality or even just a longer life, there will be more and more cyborgs with people having not only artificial hearts, but also artificial livers, lungs, kidneys, etc. There are movies such as The Sixth Day which shows a different interpretation of eternal life, but because of the illegality of doing such things in The Sixth Day, many people believe that the ultimate evolution of man will be to become machines. How ironic that you included the footage where he was learning various martial arts where the one character says "10 hours straight. He's a machine." inferring that even as humans, we will all become machine like at one point in the future. With the advancements made in robotics and DNA sequencing, there are some who believe that the generation of your grandchildren will be able to live to 1000 years old while still looking like they are in their 20s or 30s.. While I think the timeline is a bit optimistic, it will probably happen in the not too distant future. About your comment about the love story aspect, maybe it can be explained in The Terminator. On another note, I wonder if you recognized Hugo Weaving playing Agent Smith as Lord Elrond in Lord of The Rings.
If you want a sci-fi movie that leans more to drama than action, kinda the other end of the spectrum, I can't recommend Gattaca enough if you haven't seen it. Honestly not just good sci-fi but a great film period.
Gattaca is amazing, my first pick to recommend too. Other good options for low action, high drama/story are Moon, Contact, Blade Runner, Ex Machina, Silent Running, and I'd consider Interstellar and even Netflix's I am Mother. I'd skip 2001 a Space Odyssey and Star Trek the Motion Picture despite people recommending them. They're too slow and have hardly any drama of substance.
One thing to keep in mind about agents, they don't really die (except at the end where he exploded), they just transfer to someone else that hasn't been unplugged.
If you go back and watch Neo's conversation with The Oracle, you'll realize that everything she said was true. She wasn't playing Neo, he just misinterprets what she means when she says, "You've got the gift. But it seems to me that you're waiting for something. Another life, perhaps." She says right there that Neo is indeed The One, but he has to die and come back in order to unlock his power. Mary has to watch the sequels now. Though they get a bit more confusing and are divisive, they do expand on the story and introduce some new themes. I'd also recommend The Animatrix series of animated shorts, particularly The Final Flight Of The Osiris because it leads directly into the events of The Matrix Reloaded, and The Second Renaissance Part 1 & 2 because it explains the backstory about how the Machines took over the world and makes you question who the villains of the story actually are.
He doesn't come back, it's just a near death experience.Morpheus is right the oracle isn't interested in truth she says what she needs to say to get him to go where he needs to go and do what he needs to do. In this case, he needs to "die" in the matrix so he will have no choice but to reject the matrix's reality.
Watching the opening half hour or so of this movie for the first time is such a trip. I still find it hard to believe that so many people haven't seen it.
Yes, it's exactly like an interactive video game. You gain skills, you level up. Neo is "The One" player who can go to superhuman levels because of a "rounding error" in the system. Little excess bits of code all attach to him.
Further viewing: _"The Second Renaissance"_ from the Wachowskis' 2003 animated anthology film _The Animatrix._ Gives the full historical prologue of the machine/human war.
I have spent the past 17 years, since first watching that flick, demanding that they make a movie about THAT. Because THAT would be a worthwhile prequel!
What I don't understand about the movie is the part with the white mouse cursor that float over them while they're inside the Matrix, is that someone changing things in the program or helping them maybe? Perhaps I'm missing something but I don't think this ever being explained neither in this one or in the sequels.

That is kinda wild.
Really? The Russo brothers? stunt doubles?
@@smily4 The director of John Wick, not The Matrix (The Wachkowsis).
Damn that is so cool if it's true, I had no idea!

"The Matrix" is not just another film. This movie has DEFINED an entire generation of sci-fi film fans! In the same way that the original "Star Wars" did. One only wonders what the next generation-defining sci-fi film will be, because I imagine it will be just as mind-bendingly DEEP.
There have argubly been some since matrix- maybe inception? interstella?
Avatar was advertised as one when it came out. Infinity war and endgame kinda were for harboring such a large cast of "main" characters and continued storylines.
I would agree that inception had to have been.
Interstellar
Dune
I was thinking the same thing. I saw The Matrix in college a year or two after release and got to have that Star Wars mind-blown experience. And though it may not be ESB, the anticipation of the sequel. Reading this discussion I thought it was too early for the next phenomenon, then I did the math. 22 years and 22 years, wow.

Trinity: "I know why you're here, Neo. I know what you've been doing."
Neo: "Runs home and frantically tries to clear browsing history."
Those gun sounds are actually very accurate lol
I believe those are "Desert Eagles" and yes . they are very accurate. What kind of hearing protectors did they wear making this. They are invisible.
I doubt she's ever been near a gun being fired without earplugs on
I always think of Trinity falling in love with Neo in the same terms as Neo knocking over the vase. The Oracle told Trinity that she would fall in love with the One. Then Morpheus keeps telling everyone Neo is the One. Would Trinity have fallen in love with Neo if the Oracle hadn't said anything?
That’s very adept. Never thought of it. But I think you’re right.
Mind blown and noodle totally baked!
Yes. They fought agents together and he pulled her out of a crashing helicopter. just because there was no anakin/padme scene doesn't mean it didn't develop well. people can fall in love wordlessly... Mary doesn't know that lol
I think they actually do a good job of her becoming more sure of her feelings and therefore, him being the one, during the course of the film.
And in the later instalments we learn about how people can be manipulated anyhow...not just by words.
They had been watching Neo for a while and it was over that course that Trinity began falling in love with him. So, atleast from her perspective, it wasn't as sudden as it seems.
And in the later instalments we learn about how people can be manipulated anyhow.
"oh my lord what an old phone" :D we were all SO desperate for one of those at the time!
and Morpheus' phone in the next movie that extends
yeah my uncle had that phone, I was mad jealous but I one upped him by having the first colour phone in the family

@@tmac731 yes, I am sure he knows that. Hence his comment.
It was so badass and cool looking!"
Mary: "Oh my lord, what an old phone! It's so funny!"
Me: *Dies a little inside*
Saaame 😂 I used to be so mad that Neo dropped the phone.
Same!
I want to say Cingulair or T-Mobile had the phone they used in Reloaded... but I was with Sprint :/
The Matrix was filmed in Sydney Australia at the Fox Studios and on locations within the city, which will explain why you recognize some of the locations Mary, because they filmed in Australia most of the cast are also Australian.
I always recognise the sandstone rail bridge near Central.

I concur, The Animatrix is awesome
The Second Renaissance was better than any of the movies.
One of my favorites. Don't forget that Trinity had been watching Neo for a long time so she had time to develop those feelings.
By... stalking him? xD
Also they were nursing him back to health for weeks, but you only see snapshots of that in the movie.
Lol thats just stalking, not love
And in the later instalments we learn about how people can be manipulated anyhow.
"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr Anderson!"
Legit I almost said that when I went to the Fellowship of the Ring at the theater.
@@Outlaw8908 I just want him to yell at Starscream
My favorite part is when Neo comes back to life and awakens as the one, and he flexes and makes the walls bow outward
The way they have Cypher hint at her feelings for Neo because he's watching her it is pretty clever.
Watching the Animatrix anthology series will fill in a lot of the world building graps left by the movies.
And how is that fun?

This came out before serious social media and there was very little given away in the trailer. My friends and I went to see it in the afternoon opening day knowing only that it was that Keanu Hacker film. We weren’t excited we just literally had nothing better to do. Best surprise of my life.
Likewise. I'd seen some online comics on the official website that dropped hints, but I wasn't able to put them together until I actually saw the movie.
Keanu, Lawrence Fishburne , Carrie Moss and Hugo Weaving trained Kung Fu for four months under the supervision of Yuen Wo Ping!
Regarding the quickness of theTrinity-Neo romance, shared danger and exertion tends to stimulate interpersonal bonding.
Blows me away that there are people who haven’t experienced The Matrix or are aware 😉
Keanu was also in the 1995 Cyberpunk film "Johnny Mnemonic" based off the short story by William Gibson, the author of "Neuromancer" the first major cyberpunk text in 1984.
Mr Johnson dose not want to be Mr Name. Now get yourself a better deck, chipper.

The love between Trinity and Neo was supposed to be underdeveloped, so that it would be at least a little surprising for the ending.
Many people thought this movie took a lot of concepts from Dark City which came out before this. It would be interesting to see you react to that as well and see if you can draw any parallels
Agree. Came here to make this very suggestion.
When films evolve and change cinema. Best example of the 90s
The Matrix score has to be among the most underrated scores of all time, yet it's instantly iconic.
No other score comes close to the level of detail that this score has.
All it takes is listening to the intro themes in the very beginning and I'm instantly IMMERSED into the world of the Matrix.
Agents can take over anyone still plugged into the system, Mary.
Trinity has been watching Neo for a while, thats why she loves him lol
She watched him one day, in the shower, while singing to himself, and that's when she got hooked. lol
And today on "show your age", i know her from Heartbreak high, where she was even younger 😅
When I saw this when this came out, I was like...6? And It kinda blew my mind. Before I knew anything about film making, I knew that what I saw, I liked the techniques used. When agents get killed they just take over another body of a human that is still plugged into the Matrix. So he did kill Agent Smith with the train. But then some one on the train just becomes Agent Smith and he starts his pursuit again. They just always come back.
Sadly the person they inhabited/possessed is now dead on the train tracks. :/

You have to remember that Morpheus and Trinity have been watching him for some time. They never specify his long Trinity had been watching him (to fall in love) but she was convinced by the time they met.
And in the later instalments we learn about how people can be manipulated anyhow.
There is no spoon.... We all had that one friend back in 1999 who was overly obsessed with this film. XD
I was one of those friends
You said that the love part of it was underdeveloped, but I kind of disagree. They alluded to Trinity following & watching Neo for a long time before they actually met. It may be a little stalkerish, but she knew a lot about him. lol "You like watching him, don't you?" - Cypher to Trinity at the beginning. And don't think of agents as being a body or person that can die. They are programs that take control of bodies & occupy them for their needs. So when Agent Smith 'died' from the train, the body he occupied is gone & he takes control of another body.
Software that takes over the hardware of a body still jacked in literally possession.
Similar films with the same themes that came out earlier are Dark City, 13th Floor and Johnny Mnemonic (in the year 2021 where Keanu Reeves could carry as much as 80 gigs of data in his head! Watch the trailer XD)
> carry as much as 80 gigs of data in his head
Haha - reminded of the novelization of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982) - which contained dialogue about an enormous "50 megabyte" video game that was too big to fit on any of the smaller 24th Century computers in the Genesis Lab:
"I don't want to delete anything," Carol said, "but I just spent six weeks debugging this subroutine, and I've got to have it." At a lab table nearby, Del March glanced at Vance Madison.

Cannot believe this movie celebrates its 25th anniversary next year (along with The Phantom Menace)!
one of my favorites, and it's still relevant today. thanks for sharing your reaction with us, mary! :)
Neo was always the one. What the Oracle said is that he's got the gift, but he's just waiting on something, another life perhaps. So when he died and came back that was his next life.
Mary: "It looks like the young Keanu Reeves."
Me: KR does not age.
He does. Just better than most. He's no Paul Rudd who I'm convinced is immortal.
He mastered his own code.
You can actually pull off the neo mouth erase with makeup alone. Pour some liquid latex on a piece of glass and let it dry into a smooth piece. Then spirit gum the latex over your mouth and use base to make it skin tone. Just make sure to eat and hydrate first or it won't last long.
Oh wow you're definitely in for a ride I can't wait to see the other matrix reloaded and revelations as well
The concept isn't as novel as some may think.
This film was filmed in Sydney, good eye. It’s also why some of the extras (and Hugo Weaving) are from Australia
When you thought it was dreams early on it was just him waking up the next morning.
Film in Australia, but takes place in Chicago.
Great movie reaction. I was distracted, was someone else moving your cursor or were you doing that with your feet?

Yes, it's exactly like an interactive video game. You gain skills, you level up. Neo is "The One" player who can go to superhuman levels because of a "rounding error" in the system. Little excess bits of code all attach to him.
I didn't remember that he wake up because of a 'true love kiss" LMAO
I saw this in theaters before the spoilers leaked. It’s a big part of pop culture today but it was mind blowing when you first saw it fresh.
