Hey folks, the developers have announced they are no longer supporting this title and pulling it from steam. Do not purchase the game, and if you did you should request a refund from steam asap before they pull it on july 30th.
If you buy it you will still be able to download and play it, just FYI.
Splat finishing the whole level while the ship is stuck behind a rock hurt me.
This. I was almost yelling at my screen "Go back god damnit, you left the objective with a blocked path!"
@@ShevaiAsan Could be the devs intended the game to actually be played that way, the ship comes to a halt and you are free to do whatever you want until you wish to proceed, discovering hidden paths and whatnot without stressing about the moving ship.
I think the game he is thinking of in the beginning of the video is HINTERLAND
Yep, that was it!
Such a cool concept, a shame it never took off
Great little game
I wish they made Hinterland 2.
Feels like the creator played RiftBreaker and then made a game for what happens after you make the rift portal and can send people to the new colony
The only game I'm aware of would be Dark Cloud, which was for the PS(2?). Basically, you would go into dungeons, find buildings/people, and then could plant them in your city.
That came out about 8 years earlier though, so, I don't think that's what would be hanging around, and I wouldn't say the guys behind Professor Layton are exactly indie.
Dark cloud 1 and 2 for the ps2 they were great and unique games.
he's talking about HINTERLAND
God Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 were such amazing games.
There is a number of games that combine the premise of a single adventurer fighting monsters and coming back to build up a town.
My favorites are Tilted Mill's Hinterlands, and Soldak's Zombasite. The former is a lot simpler, and the latter much more involved. In Hinterlands, you choose a class at the start, which gives you only a few bonuses and maluses to things like attack speed and food production, while in Zombasite you can play one of multiple classes with elaborate skills, and even mix your own class from existing skill sets.
Both games involve both going out to kick ass and get resources, and coming back to fight off an attack on your holding. In both, you choose to hire, equip and assign to tasks different NPC types, and they can die during an attack.
Both games are WELL worth playing.
------------------------
By the way, I think the game Splattercat remembers is one of the earlier Soldak games, that also involved the same premise, but with fewer dungeons and surface areas, and much fewer NPC villagers features. From the time frame (2008) it could be Depth's of Peril... and if it was later, then it may have been Din's Curse. Those are great as well, although Depths is dated. Din's Curse is a total gem even today, if you can get past the blocky graphics.
I remember playing the demo for this, and being whelmed. It was an interesting premise, but there was obvious telegraphing of a grind-a-thon, and the progression model was absolutely something out of a freemium mobile game. Basically it felt like a time sink looking for a premise to put on like a costume, and found one that sort of fit but not really.
I love the concept, it's very original. A game where you have to build a resort from the ground up after you cleared the wildlife and stuff i have never seen before, the game looks good too. Awesome stuff as usual Splat, you always find something interesting!
1:02 You may be thinking of Depths of Peril by Soldak Entertainment. Myself, I'm reminded of Hinterland, released 2008 by Tilted Mill Entertainment. It's still one of my all-time fav indies.
I loved hinterland so much!
Bruh thank you for mentioning this
Also Din's Curse and Zombasite A lot of their games are sort of like he described. They're really good though
I often bought games based on the description and screen shots on the box, back before UA-cam was a household name.
I remember you making a very very early impressions of this title a a year or two years ago. Nice to see how far they've come with the development of this game. The graphical style looks very professional.
I thought he had. As soon as I saw the base I was like "I've seen this before"... and yes, he actually covered this 11 months ago.
Same here. Couldn't remember the action-rpg part, but when i saw the base building part i was like , i am sure i've seen this before and by Splatty. Glad to see devs keep working on it.
I absolutely love the mashing together of different genres, gonna have to keep an eye on this. Thanks, Splat!
Yup...bought it. Interesting enough to get a "Im home and need a break from my main games...Ooooh...this looks shiney" purchase.
22:13 Crazy, I was just listening to their DotA song last week! Randomly popped into my head.
Splat might be talking about Depths of Peril, it is a game from the company that made Drox Operative, fits the description and was from 2007.
Interesting stuff. It's got lots of nice touches like the effects around the transport vehicle and the big critters burrow animation. One to watch.
Combination RPG and City Builder is exactly my jam, and a game like that which doesn't skimp on the City Builder half while still maintaining the strength of the RPG half is something I've been looking for for a very long time.
Is the game you are thinking about Hinterland?
Edit:
Remember playing that around 2008 and I do believe it had a limited physical release. Action rpg, go out and kill mobs, go back build your little town, defend against invasions.
Seconding this, sounds like Hinterland. Great game
I was thinking the same. Loved that one.
I believe the game you are thinking about is "The Spatials" and "The Spatials : Galactology" ... go on missions, collect resources, build a base for visitors, and recruit staff, all in a sci-fi environment.
Was watching and going "Oh yeah, kinda cool", and then the base building part came up and now its scratching my itch.
Thanks for showcasing! ^^
The Indie city builder action RPG from back a good number of years that I recall was called Hinterland
Were you thinking of Hinterland? Because that game was great and unique at the time.
The game you're thinking about is likely Judgement apocalypse, you have to build a city and go explore a big map, but there's many games like that, Necesse is one of the best examples, it's amazing. Terraria, core keeper, starbound, dragon quest builders 2 are also games like that. Realms of magic, hammerhelm as well. Forager and Keplerth are also amazing games.
You had me at 'wipe everything out'. Suffer not the Xeno.
thanks to you i buy and play games i never would have found if it wasnt for your channel, thank you splat!
i pirate the games
@@Get_Milked Pirated games come at their own cost. People don't crack games for free. They like to hide crypto miners and other malware in them.
Sounds like splat was talking about depths of peril or kivi’s underworld both by soldak, who later made Din’s curse. Fun games.
Pretty sure you're thinking of Hinterland! Put out in 2008 by Tilted Mill.
A base-building ARPG? Color me intrigued!
That foggy glass effect on the greenhouses is niiiiice.
This is like cult of the lamb you build a cult but you dungeon run for resources to build that cult
It drove me crazy watching you leave the transport stuck on the rocks.
You should consider streaming.
It isn't quite the game he is thinking of, but they were mixing city/civ building and action game sequences way back when I was a kid with Act Raiser.
Hell yeah, this looks kinda cool so far
reminds me of Beyond Contact.. and another game you reviewed about 2 years back maybe.. I think i played the demo based on our play through
Dark cloud is a good suggestion. Act raiser was sorta a hybrid too.
It’s such a specific concept
Look at all the cute animals that used to exist XD! loved that splatty
I am for sure getting this.
This kind of reminds me of Actraiser for the ol' SNES
finally the artstyle im looking for
Heh, the first twenty seconds of your intro and I'm flashing back to the Corporate Wars from the old TSR RPG Star Frontiers.
Smells like some Actraiser DNA in the mix. Neat idea.
That game sounds like Hinterland, good little game that had a lot of potential but devs only went so far with it.
This guy gets his free time in on the side while doing work, bruh
Came here to say Hinterland. I found it on my own recently. It is 100% the game being described at the start of the video for comparison.
I bought this when it launched in early access. The action is good but the stages for it are short, like they were designed for a mobile game, and the city builder stuff operated similarly. They may have improved this in the year since then though
Splattercat, do you remember a store chain called "Player 2"? That's the store in which I first saw advertising for my favorite JRPG Chrono Cross, and discovered that I love playing video games.
Fine video
Ya I collected video-games for a longtime myself😂at least that's what I called it.🤔I still have a closet full of them, maybe they will be worth something someday. Oh the oriinal M&B, I was a backer/tester on the original😅we had to download iso's for play-testing new builds, wow that was a long time ago. Have a great day.👍
Love all these Eukaryotic Games that are coming out lately.
this looks very much like Riftbreaker. including some of the assets lol
Spellforce 2 had a cool "city buiding" set of quests in Westguard.
Looks like it would be a fun game!
13:25 lol they actually named that woman Ever Bred
Cool !
reminds me of the first pc game i found in a pawn shop/card shop. it was the original large box of Asheron’s Call. just the single box speaking to me 😂
Thats how I found the original of mount and blade too!
I loved the original mount and blade
You stream? I'm gonna have to check that out ;) Good vid.
There's an endangered species right there
Reminds me of Red Solstice with a more in depth crafting and meta progression (without the crazy dark humanity is lost story line).
It seems like the base building is pretty well done. The missions seem to be a little bit undercooked but not too bad. Seems like the challenge level is at about the right level for a game based around resource management and city building... but the pace of the action is a little on the slow side while you're on a mission, compared to other action-RPG looter-shooters. But yeah it's an interesting game.
Sounds like Hinterland is the game you are talking about.
Posted 58 secs ago? Hell yeah somethin to watch while drinkin' my mornin' tea.
I hope you have a nice morning and a good day. =]
Zombasite. The game's name is Zombasite and it comes from Soldak Entertainment
Should have dropped them points in science for the crit chance buff bro!
The only pc game I know of back then is the convoy where you are a city on wheels but you go out and get resources and such
Back in my day, only Team Fort Classic had a minigun shotgun. Back when everything was polygon, and we liked it that way. Oh, time for my heart meds... Urk...
There was the Riot Gun in the original Shadow Warrior, but that was more of a quad-barrel revolving shotgun than a proper minigun
Is the game you are talking about, that reminded of you this, called Hinterland? From 2008, I got it too, same reason, looked interesting.
Was trying to think of a name if it were a unique genre... something along the lines of 'extraction builder' comes to mind
Heroic mayor games?
The game you were trying to think of is probably Zombasite.
Depths of Peril? It sounds like that one and is by the Din's Legacy/Drox Operative dev.
Your Best Buy story is how I found XCOM, good times.
I would always prefer to have a voice acting rather than sitting and reading, like I remember when TB (may you rest in peace) did a video about SUNLESS SEA and he was narrating the game I jumped and bought it immediately without knowing that my voice sound bad in my head like George 🙂
the name of the game you forgot is probably Hinterland
The game u mention is called "planet explorer" hope this help
Game you might be thinking of is Actrazor
Make an episode series 😊
It's basically Riftbreaker but simpler
Dude. With how many skills & perks you have that require crits, you should put points into Science because it increases your crit chance & crit damage, according to what I saw on your screen.
hinterland maybe or dark cloud? for the game you were thinking about
Splatt, are you describing the game Dark Cloud?
I don't mind a time-chunking system to help gatekeep progress. Break it down to things require X units of time taken from a total available -- same but different I guess? I prefer it over energy though
🖤
i wish it was co-op
I've been keeping an Eye on this game for nearly a Year now? It does open up quite a bit in the later Stages of the Story and also throws a few new Enemies your way but the Devs went from posting semi-regular Updates to complete and utter silence since August this year with the latest Update bringing in AI NPC's. Here's to hoping they sort themselves out and polish it off before they get out of Early Access. It'd be a shame if they didnt because there is quite a bit of meat here that i'd rather not see going to waste
The game you can't remember may be Hinterland.
In some way it reminds me of Actraiser.
In case you missed it, splat streams EVERYDAY... Ffs 😆😆
DarkCloud had a system like that to, could that be it?🤔🧐
Hinterland
17:44 Wait who voices the main character? He sounds exactly like Anklespankin.
4:55 Serviceable voice acting that is not overdoing it or cringe is all i ask and honestly i too prefer it. Of course if you can't do it either for budget reasons or lack of ok voice actor. Then it's understandable. But man, i hate reading.
looks very similar to riftbreaker. but with more town building. not sure what game you were talking about. theres a bunch it could be. not dragonquest builder?
2:40 Bastion?
look like helldivers
The game was red solstice 2
Discord link in description has expired (tried on iPhone)
Kinda reminds me of Helldivers
Looks a bit like a Riftbreaker
wait, you also stream?
