Light therapy is an effective natural treatment for depression with less side effects than medication. Multiple peer-reviewed RCT have shown that light therapy is as effective or more effective than medication at treating non-seasonal depression.
In this episode, I’m going to teach you how light impacts your brain and influences your mood and how you can use light therapy as a natural, non-medicinal way to treat seasonal depression (aka winter blues or SAD). I'll also teach you how rigorous research has shown that light therapy can be as effective as antidepressant medication at treating non-seasonal depression.

Sunlight doesn’t just help prove with SAD, but with normal depression or anxiety too. It does everything you explained in this video.
The sun literally resets my brain and all of its emotions, clears my congestion in my nose, cures my diet pattern. And makes me FEEL more, wherever I’m depressed. I live for the sun

I can only praise everything said in this video. I have suffered from SAD since I was in my teens (now in my early 40ies), because I live in Sweden where we have really dark winters. Last Christmas I got a large light box, and what a difference it makes! Even my cat sits in front of it and enjoys the light, so I think it works for real 😅😁 I got a similar large model, tested and labelled "best in test" that year.
I take vitamine d, go for walks during my lunch breaks and sit in front of my box all morning. Keeping SAD away that way ☺️

Lighting has a massive effect on my ADHD brain. That’s why I have 15 colored smartbulbs throughout my house.
I can use my iPhone to make each lightbulb any color I want.
I also have a “sunlight” light but for some reason I don’t like it. Not sure why. But I sure love using my colored smartbulbs to enhance my mood.

I'm so thankful for your videos. Because of your videos I've become more aware of my mental health. I've been denying my background depression for many years and this year was the last straw. I'd been doing natural alternatives and they worked for a little while but this month I took the plunge and tried wellbutrin and omg... I went from being unable get up off my couch for days to having positive thoughts of the future, difficult tasks don't seem so daunting anymore. It's amazing. I'm also incorporating the natural alternatives as well, I got a red lightbulb for my bedroom to keep my circadian rhythm. My sleep has gotten so much better. I actually dream at night again. Anyway. Thank you for your channel.

100% sleep and light impacts depression. When I was working overnights and early mornings inside a concrete building where I got no sun and had a consequencely poor sleep schedule...I spiraled into depression. When I finally threw my hand up and quit my job entirely (I didn't work for 8 months straight) I was able to reset my sleep schedule to waking with the sun. I found sleep easier and my depression resolved. I no longer take antidepressants now that I sleep more and have a better job with regular hours that allows me to rise with the sun. I also am starting to use a light therapy lamp. It's really a far cry from the last few years where just getting out of bed was an insurmountable chore.

I noticed what you said on a camping trip , by the camp fire I would get sleepy very early. So i would go to bed a few hours sooner than normal. I would also wake up as the sun came up, with out a alarm clock. It felt great. Animals in the wild follow different sleep schedules based on season . Like you said less in the summer more in the Winter. Our problem is our modern society goes against this, and we have alot of issues because of that. Cant have a cookie cutter indoor life. WE were made to stand in the light outside
** Keep in mind we do need some UVB light to produce Vitamin D EACH day. So spending time outside in the sun is best.

This is very interesting--thank you. I think I accidentally set up light therapy for myself, and it's been working. I live in an area of the US where about 50% of the days are spent under heavy cloud cover. I purchased a large light box a few years ago to try out light therapy, but the instructions I saw at the time recommended that you look directly into the light. Doing so seemed to give me headaches, so I stopped using it that way. Instead I put it on my kitchen table facing up; the overhead room lights were dead so this supplemented available light. (My cat likes lying on it as well--it's warm and big enough for him to enjoy!)
Okay, now fast forward to WFM because of the pandemic. My computer is set up on the kitchen table, and the light box is to the left of it and just a bit farther away than the computer screen. So just by dumb luck I've been spending a lot of time with the light at the proper distance and in a good location while I'm working. It seems to me that I'm not experiencing winter depression to the extent I usually do. It hadn't occurred to me until I saw your video that this is probably the reason. I mean, I still experience some stress from the normal sources and a sense of isolation, but it definitely seems better than I would expect, especially in February!

Question: Is there a relation between modern media (TV series/Movies for examlple) getting more violent and depressing, having any influence on actual number of depressions in a given population?
I somehow had that question in mind when i remembered that they use this therapy (or something similar) in norway or sweden, because of the days get really short there.

Good question. There are papers written on this very topic. As a result, I’ve stopped all horror/violence movies and now in the process of removing ‘the news’ from my mental diet aswell. If I don’t protect my sanity, who will?

Sorry for the late reply. I got out of the habit of watching most modern TV series and movies. Some Movies and Series made in the 50s, 60s and 70s are mostly much less violent and way less depressing than what they make these days. Maybe it's just my personal taste, but i don't want to feel the need to take a shower whenever i watch TV.
Several months ago i started to watch the news only once a day, just to know what's goin on, but i don't involve in "social Media", aside from occasional UA-cam comments and i mind staying much more positive myself.
It's funny, but i have noticed that i feel much less distressed and anxious since i started with this.

  • @williamstoutenburgh2116

This makes so much sense, but I totally do the opposite. I have all my blinds drawn and most of the time lights off. Shut in my apartment. In The summer I spend more time outside, except when it's too hot. The opposite in the winter because it's cold. But the angle of the light affects me in the fall and winter and my depression kicks in.

You said that the light should come slightly from above. I don't live in the US and I can only get my hands on light therapy lamps that are tilted upwards. How useful would those be? Other than the angle, they're the same, no UV, 10.000 lux...

Aside from the 10,000 LUX and having the light come from a downward angle, what other considerations are there for choosing a good lamp? Have you seen the Sunrise Sensation lamps? What is you opinion on whether they would be effective? I do like that the Carex daylight is based on the lights they used in the clinical trials but its base is really big and clinical feeling. If I had multiple rooms or storage options it would be no question to go with it but I only have a bedroom and very little storage space. The Sunrise Sensations lamps say that they produce 10,000 LUX but it looks like they may be more diffuse and they are all angled on a base that points up instead of down. You could place them on a higher shelf but they would still be pointing up instead of down. (looking mostly at the smaller BrightBox)

Such as Godox SL100D which at 1 meter puts out 32 100 lux of 96+ CRI quality 5600K or 6500K (depending on the model) daylight. Thus it is much brighter than many light therapy lamps which only put out 10 000 lux at 30 cm. Not sure about its specific wavelengths though, but if it's 96+ CRI then I guess the spectrum should be pretty even and thus usuable for therapeutic purposes, right?

Also when out in the natural sun..is absorbing through skin enough or should we not wear sunglasses? I know with the lamp you had said our retinas need to absorb the light. Wondering if its the same with the natural sunlight.

The skin and the eyes process light differently so I think a combination would be best. And I don’t know if exposure to natural sunlight can cause mania but I have heard of some anecdotal examples of that.

Are you suffering from Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and you are still doubting natural herbs? I have seen the great importance of natural herbs in my life and the wonderful work they have done in people's lives. I only try and use my bedroom for sleeping so when I’m in there my brain knows to sleep cause I have problems waking up in the middle of the night or waking up really early.
Where do you do your light therapy? I’ve been doing it right when I wake up while praying but I’m thinking that might be counter intuitive if I’m also using my bedroom to emit a light that will wake me up???

Let me also note I live with roommates so there’s not too many other places I can go/not feel weird praying. Also praying is really the only down/slow time I have in the morning :p
