    "JETTYWOLF LIVE"
    - Capt Dave discusses his favorite Shakespeare Ugly Stik rods; their great features, durability from a fishing guides aspect.
    He bleeds.....UGLY STIK! (wanna see the tattoo?)
    I AM NOT A FRESHWATER CAT FISHERMAN, for all of you that still haven't asked about kittykat fishing.
    I was on the G. Loomis pro-staff for I believe 7 years, and had more rods snapped in half than I've ever seen before. I've tried St. Croix's, Cabelas brand rods, even some Heavy Duty Penn rods.
    I started out in the charter business in 1996 with a arsenal of Ugly Stiks, made the rounds trying out all the High End rods, and eventually ended up where I began. Because they just plain WORK, for me, and my charter customers. Happy to be a Select Angler thru Pure Fishing.

    Great video. Nice to hear someone give advice who actually does it for a living. I have been attempting to damage my Uglysticks for years- just can't do it. I love the same two models you review with one slight difference. I have the two piece model on the medium power which is perfect to lug on the New York City subways. lol
    I dread to see the "improvements" in the new series. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I never met a graphite rod I couldn't break.

    Here in Northern California, it’s common to see medium action Tiger rods as the charter boat rods. They are used to drop feathered rigs for rockfish, ling cod, and halibut. Then on the same trip, they will be used to troll for king salmon. They are very versatile. Many of us pair our Tigers with older made in USA Penn reels.

    The tiger rod is a extremely versatile all around rod imo. I use them for both cat fishing and surf. I have a 6500 C3 paired up with a tiger lite and a 7000 C3 paired up with a tiger stik, matches made in heaven imo. Both have been used extensively at the coast and both have hauled in their fair share of channels and flat heads.

    Capt. Dave, I have commented on your reviews multiple times before. It was in regards to the TR 100 and TR 200 reels, and the Ugly Stik White Catfish and Striper rods. I own both of those rods now and use them everyday I am fishing. Like you like to say they are durable to all get out man. In fact, I came down to Florida, in Pompano last year, and caught 2 small Nurse sharks using the White Ugly Stik Catfish rod. I love em'. And now you come out with this review on the Tiger Rod. Last Year I bought this rod in the 7' Med 1pc. 20-50 3/4-6oz. version for my Flathead catfishing back at home. For the price there is NO WAY you can find a more durable rod than that. And then top it off, you go and talk about the Curado 300. I've owned one now for 5 years and it's the most vesitle reel out there. I feel it's one of the best reels ever. Keep speaking the brother! You Rock!

    William Greene - You are so right in praising these rods! These are great rods at a great price-point. I have BOTH Spinning and Casting Models - the same rod - in 7 foot but in 2-piece - since I travel in trains & buses. Same strength - 10-50 lb line rating. Casting a 4-oz sinker without straining - can handle more - great backbone. 7-foot length is good for tight quarters shore casting where a 9-footer+ might be unsuitable - overhanging trees, etc. What I did do was replace the metal guides with Fuji Hardloys - advanced aluminum oxide -- because I was concerned the metal guides - especially the tip guide, might groove. Easy to shave off the top black winding and leave the bottom red underwrap in place. The Spinning model comes with FUJI aluminum oxides already installed. The other great thing is they come with a BIG reel seat - Fuji size 24 - so you can put both small and big reels on them. I use them for shore fishing - big carp and catfish. Of course, they're great for kayaking and boat fishing.

      I use all the guides that come with them I'm heavy saltwater fish that run a hundred yards without thinking about it or longer have no issues with any of the guides for carp and catfish you're totally doing Overkill. This is an old video anyhow now they all have ugly tough guides on them even though I like those guides better they changed over no issues here

      @@williamgreene3192 I'll never understand why catfish and carp guys use tackle I'd use for 100-200 pound sharks, or 40 pound redfish in 4 knots of current, in 50' of water! They ain't blue marlin...!! Those 2 will clean your freak'n clock!! as a kid I'd catch 20-30 pound carp with 8-10 pound test cheap azz mono, a small abu garcia reel and a 5' bluegill Ugly stik. long shank hook with fermented horse corn stacked on the hook and two split shots, near a rocky dam and spill way......because it was light tackle and fun! I see rods for sale that make me cringe. Someone started all that BS, and then they use the cheapest piece of crap reels. GOOD GAWD!

      *****
      "Heavy-duty chrome-plated stainless steel double-footed guides" this is straight from basspro.com regarding the tiger. Ive heard chrome is a big nono in saltwater, flakes relatively quickly. "THESE are SALTWATER rods" your right about that.

    • @CaptDavesSportfishing
      @CaptDavesSportfishing  9 років тому +1

      Marvin Alarcon THEN BASS PRO SHOPS IS WRONG. Mine do not have any chrome anything. Many catalogs are, when they have so many to sell.I'm thinking about ordering 6 more, just because the guides are so tough, because people have no respect for my tackle and yesterday a guide on a regular Ugly broke from all the beatings. The new GX2 rods have super guides, even tougher. Too bad I don't like the action of them in 7 foot. There's "dead spots" in the bend.

    • @mmmarv
      @mmmarv 9 років тому +1

      Good point and glad to hear they're holding up. The gx2 was my first choice with all the hype, they have very similar guides to the TFO salmon rods. The problem with the GX2 is the moderate action weve come to love is gone, on top of that the lure rating is nowhere near what the tiger can handle. Im gonna go stop by and pick these up. Ive gotta go check that mobius out. Ive been wanting to video log fishing trips for the benefit of others. THANKS for all your help. SUBSCRIBED!

I also have Seeker stealth series 8' deckhand style and Penn bluewater carnage 7'10" both those I use for offshore fishing for dorado tuna yellowtail flatlining and surface irons. But still can't beat the price for the two ugly sticks that I use on jetty and pier pulling good size fish with no problem and both are old hand me downs. Awesome video Dave. I don't use bait casters so for me finding a good "swimbait" rod has been pretty difficult. Do you think the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger Lite would be a good purchase for lake bass fishing? Throwing 1-3oz swimbaits.

    • @CaptDavesSportfishing
      @CaptDavesSportfishing  9 років тому +1

      I'd highly recommend you start being a "baitcaster", because baitcasting is way more versatile than spinning tackle. When people go on my boat they learn that's a fact real fast! You could use a Ugly tiger lite for that, but the bass world has a million other rods that could work, too. But, you'll probably pay more and get a rod that'll be too stiff and brittle. The Tigers are soooooo tough. I could throw 1-3 oz. all day with them, depending on action.

    • @marvinmurakami8828
      @marvinmurakami8828 2 роки тому

      The tiger rod would be overkill for bass. You should check out the Ugly Stix gx2 rods, intercoastal (if they still make them), or if you're sure you want to use 3 oz lures, then go with the big water rod rated for 10-20 pound test mono.

BEST days are 2 persons, and least versatile days are 4 persons. YES, Yesterday the tides were terrible. a 3.5 rising tide made for NO incoming current, and it was also a high low tide, too boot! Hey Cap, I know you’re using the medium light because of the action. But would it make diamond jigging 8-10 oz or bottom fishing eel with 8oz impossible? I’m in the north east looking to go out for striped bass. Not much casting or trolling from party boats. Would I go with the medium heavy then?

    I notice the video was posted October 2014. I've also seen your vids regarding the Catfish and Striper rods. Are you now (as of Sept 2016) currently using the Tiger rods? I've noticed in the comments that Ugly Stik was making changes. (?)
    I have a TranX 500, and was considering the Catfish, a la the combo in the vid where you hook into a 100# shark. I was also considering the Striper for 2 Curado EJ's I have.

    Hey Capt Dave, what can I fish with an Ugly Stik Tiger rod medium light with a 12 to 30# rating? I ordered one online, still haven't received it yet. I can always return it for a medium or medium heavy. I'm pretty new to fishing. My ideal weight in fish would be from 1# to 15# to eat but for fun a 16# to 30+# would be nice. I can always get a heavier rod later. So is this rod right for me. I mostly want catfish but I'm up for catching any fish. Mostly fresh water fishing for now, maybe later some saltwater fishing. Tried the ugly stik tiger medium light for porgy and sea bass here on the east coast.Best rod for bottom fishing I've ever had.It had the backbone to lift them into the boat yet a sensitive tip for feeling the lightest bites.Don't see any reason to buy anything more expensive.can buy two of these for the price of one of most rods.But sad to see that they are coming out with a new model and discontinuing it.Tbh these companies need to learn not to discontinue or change something thats already good.As a smart man once said,"If it ain't broke,don't fix it"

    • @CaptDavesSportfishing
      @CaptDavesSportfishing  8 років тому

      YEAH, THEY ARE SO CALLED IMPROVING THE RODS AND I GUESS NO MAKING THE "LEAST SELLING" ACTIONS.

      ***** The wraps on the older tigers were prettier and didn't look so cheap.They looked awesome for such a budget rod.But my major gripe was the guides.They looked thinner than the old tiger rods.At least they were smart enough to keep them all metal and no insert.The big waters look ok but I prefer the old yellow and red wrap.Companies today need to learn that if something isn't wrong with the product and people like,then don't mess with it.The only thing I would've changed would've been to make the butt a little longer,but I could live with the rod as it was.Other than that it was perfect.

I fish the intercoastal waterway in FLA , I use big 6500 plus bait runners and want to toss big live bait out in the current from a pier , can you recommend a spinning pole that will chunk a 10 to 20 inch whiting or mullet the farthest ? im not worried about breaking but there seems to be a demand between loading a road properly and a rod that is stiff enough to throw large baits ,. I have a shakespear 7 foot MH rod but it still doesn't have the backbone to chunk something huge . and it would have to be a spinning pole not extremely long but something stiff enough and will load a big piece of bait .

    So I got a question, you've stated in a few videos that you dislike the GX2, I was just curious as to why? I had one but ditched it for striper rods, plus the reel seat on it seemed like cheap plastic junk

      Samuel Theysohn the finish, the dead spots in the action, the uncomfotabe reelseats, do I need to go on???

      These were the old school tiger rods before the stupid ugly tough guides the guides these rods had were better but it's not like you can't buy these exact tiger rods anymore uglystick.com

    Just watch talk about daiwa reels that u have to get from Japan well that's what the shimano bantam 1000L and the 2000L EX they were only sold in Japan back in the 80s I would like to send u pictures but don't know how. I buy most stuff off eBay and I have got few surf rods with the light tips that I question but after watching your videos I see why the tips are that way but they have serious backbone can't wait to get a big fish on 1.

      Again....no one EVER looks at the video descriptions (click ""show more"") or actually goe to MY CHANNEL: ua-cam.com/users/captdavessportfishing
      where there's the page called ""ABOUT"", both places my website is listed and from there, my email.......ALSO, there's a "discussion page"", No one ever uses! PLUS how can anyone miss my website? It's on every single video. No need to send. I know what a monster Bantam looks like. You never said "bantam" before. If you want to chat, Yes, I prefer NOT to use YT comments section for that. Just email instead, or go to discussions page.
