This album is so good-its like they just set up in Squier's garage and went to town. No heavy production-no autotune-just pure, raw, driving rock.
Absolutely
When music was music
This was just prior to the era when over producing became standard.
Funny you said that I had a friend who would always say Billy Squire & Supertramp were the greatest garage bands ever
Well said!
This was Billy Squier's tribute to Led Zeppelin. Listen to the John Bonham style drumming
Yes!
I knew I recognized the sound on this song. Led Zeppelin, that makes sense.
I remember hearing this same comment from a DJ years ago
Not just the style of drumming, but that big When the Levee Breaks, drums in the open stairway sound!!
and his voice.....I was like he sounds just like Robert Plant to me lol...
Billy Squier is an example of talent too good to fail, but not good enough to stand against the politics of the music industry. What a phonemical talent! This is an ALBUM concept where almost every single song is a winner.
He attended the Berkley College of Music. He wouldnt give up his publishing rights, and that made industry execs mad. He is worth $40 million dollars, a large amount of money for a guy who only had a couple great albums. As a comparison, Hall and Oates are worth around $35 million a piece. Daryll Hall HATES the industry. What a voice Billy has!
Billy Squier put this reaction on his facebook page.
This album, "Don't Say No" was total fire. The follow up, "Emotions in Motion" was damn good too.
Some highlights:
"The Stroke."
"In the Dark"
"Everybody Wants You."
"She's a Runner"
Don't Say No was Squier's 2nd solo album
@@rickvolavka7026 Corrected by removing "first" Thanks for clarifying.
The Stroke was the weakest song on Don't Say No
Most definitely The Stroke and Everybody Wants You 🙏🙏
Billy was great in concert back in the mid 80's. Good old rock and roll.
I know I'm super late to this party, but when Amber said, "the drummer absolutely killing it" I was like "YES" the drummer rocks!
That whole Don't Say No album is insane !
Also...The Stroke & Everybody Wants You!! I've been begging for Billy Squier!! Yay!! ❤️
Definately need to hear The Stroke...and Everbody wants you...such a vibe!
@@denniss5275 My Kinda Lover is another good one!!
Best concert I *EVER* saw: Billy Squier opened for *_QUEEN_* !!! -- Yep, I saw Freddie before he was dead.
Me too! in Cincinnati Gardens.
Absolutely love Billy Squire's music. He's underrated, which is such a shame !
Still does some touring and such.
His biggest hit song's video killed his career.
Harry Edward Nilsson III👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
@@michaelallen387 homophobia killed his career. It's 2024, you can say it...
I wouldn't say homophobia, Queen was huge during the time. The video was just terrible! Billy was my favorite Rockstar at the time too!
A little known fact about Billy. He is the number one most sampled artist. For the hip hop community. That is why he doesn’t do many concerts. He makes millions licensing his beats and riffs. Another great review by y’all
It's actually James Brown not Billy
What songs/artists? That's awesome.
@@redrocks1983 I think Eminem samples the stroke
Billy Squire is one of the most sampled artists out. His music has always been fire.
Billy is so underrated he was huge in the 80s wish more people gave him more credit because he is really talented with such stage presence. Saw him in concert when I was little. I was lucky enough to have a single mother who took me everywhere she went so I grew up experiencing amazing artists from a very young age. Check out his song “The Stroke” love it!
BillyS was my Rocker back in the 80’s!
It's Billy Squier. 😎
He was my first concert. He opened for Queen. He killed it!!!!
1982? I saw them at The Spectrum in Philly.
@@robertbrenneman5367 In '82 I saw Billy open for Foreigner at the Spectrum. It was my final semester of college so I think it was possibly February but I think it was in March.
Yes, he did 🤩🤩🤩 I saw them at The Forum in '82
You're getting warmer...😎
And with this tune, you have officially jumped down the musical rabbit hole of Billy Squire!! Do the happy dance with me, because great music with a twist in every song awaits!!!
*All Night Long*
*In The Dark*
*Everybody Wants You*
*Don't Say You Love Me*
*She Goes Down*
*Love Is The Hero*
That'll do for starters and I hope you keep an eye on this thread because you really need more Billy Squire to help round out your 80's musical understanding. It's only right. And when you react to "The Stroke" please pay very close attention to the lyrics otherwise you might mishear him sing something...that he didn't really sing...😯😁
I really loves me some Billy Squire tunes, all right, all right, all right...essential listening, imo. He's got a gravel in there, and a fire...
Thanks
S.W.
How can you know so many of his songs, and get his name wrong?!
Gotta love Billy Squier!!!!
This song, like a lot of Billy's, has *swagger*.
I didn't see anyone say he is still touring. He is.First concert I took my daughter to.Great showman.
Billy Squire was huge in the early to mid 80s when I was in college. Songs you have to check out from the same album are “The Stroke”, “In the Dark” and “My Kinda Lover”.
Strangely, one of my favorite songs from Billy Squier though is “Don’t say you Love Me” from one of his later albums….
1 ..Billy Squier Rocks !!
I don't have much to add. Squier is just simple in your face rock and roll done right.
Fun Fact: In 2006 he joined Sheila E, Edgar Winter, Rod Argent and Hamish Stewart(Average White Band) on tour with the Ringo Starr All Star Band. 🙂
In The Dark, Everybody Wants You
Billy was the next Led Zeppelin. He had a Plant voice, he & his drummer the late Bobby Chenard had Bonham down, had great guitar prowess including great Telecaster, & Les Paul tones, & was a dynamite songwriter, arranger & self producer. Literally on a certain level, an almost 1 man LZ.
And then the "dance" happened....lol
@@warinsidemyhead8939 Haha! Yes, & then the dance happened. Good one! Instant Classic!
@@andresflores1500 Lol....if he would've just stood still and played the damned guitar....
@@warinsidemyhead8939 A beautiful, & now quite hard to find Telecaster/Les Paul hybrid Saint Blues guitar at that. It's funny how no one ever says if only The Dance hadn't looked so fruity. Nope, the general consensus is that of 'If only he hadn't ever danced at all!' All can think of is that was the worst Cocaine Decision ever. If only Billy hadn't done The Booger Sugar Boogie!
@@andresflores1500 Lol!!😁😁
Anything from 80s rocker Billy Squire is good.Very popular in his time.👍👍
He doesn't get the respect deserving of his great music. Billy Squier is one of my favorites, still today! I can listen to his music all day.
J & Amber, you'll love his "My Kinda Lover", "Everybody Wants You" and "The Stroke"!!!
In the Dark too
And She's A Runner.
My kinda lover agree! ❤️
@@Priasbcbeist oh I forgot "Don't Say No". I saw him on the "Don't Say No" and "Emotions in Motion" tours, in '81 & '82.
I think they did The Stroke...not sure. ❤️
Thank you, I forgot how powerful he was.
You totally nailed that vibe. Billy was one of the best artists of early 80s American rock and roll. I graduated high school in the early 80s when he was really big and we listened to a lot of his stuff along with Journey, Van Halen, Pat Benatar, The Cars, and The Police. I'm sure you already got all these suggestions so let me just echo, for further Billy Squier songs: "Everybody Wants You", "My Kind of Lover", and "The Stroke". If you liked this one you'll like those too.
Billy Squier is a great producer… and this is something that is not overproduced… check out my kind of lover, in the dark, the stroke etc….
The drummer's name is Bobby Chouinard. He was on most of the Billy Squier albums. Unfortunately, he left us in 1997. Great drummer! He always stood out on every song he played! Also, fun fact: Billy Squier is the most sampled artist in hip hop. I'm sure Bobby had a lot to do with it!
Not even close to being the most sampled. Big Beat got used a shitton back then but the James Brown breaks, The Winstons, Bob James, etc got used a LOT more. Big Beat will forever be the toughest drum break though imo.
First concert I ever saw was Billy Squier opening for Pat Benatar. It just doesn't get much better than that. They both just rocked the venue! Fantastic intro to rock and an amazing memory!! Check out more Billy Squier, "Everybody Wants You", "My Kinda Lover" and "Don't Say You Love Me". You won't be disappointed!!
I was never a big Billy Squier fan... but "Billy Squier opening for Pat Benatar"... It doesn't get more 80s than that! LOL We had it good musically in those days. And concert tickets were like 18 bucks!
And just think, Def Leppard opened for Billy Squire when Pyromania came out. Talk about coming full circle.
The Stroke is my favorite Billy Squier song. He takes me back to fun times. Some of the best times of my life.
You couldn’t escape hearing his work on the radio, all your friends car stereo’s even in dance clubs during rock segments. Billy Squire was FIRE!!!
I love Billy Squire! Some of my favorite songs from him is Everybody Wants You, The Stroke, My Kind of Lover and In The Dark and of course Lonely is The Night.
All great songs! Don’t forget Rock Me Tonight! Highly underrated artist! If he’s not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he should be!
‘70s and ‘80s were great decades to be rock fans! Today’s music just isn’t the same, not by a long shot!
I seen Squier at the Charlotte Coliseum with Def Leppard opening on March 19th 1983. It was awesome. My ears are still ringing, because he rocked the house down.
Billy is definitely a hidden gem,
“The Stroke” is a classic, more please!
You’re right about what you always say about the music from our time… truth is, I don’t think most of us realized how good we had it and how music was at it’s pentacle...
Billy was huge in the 80's. His 3 big albums had so many great rock songs. His other albums are good too, but these are the best. Don't Say No is absolutely classic. Don't Say No (1981) Emotions in Motion (1982) Signs of Life (1984)
His 1st album, Tale Of The Tape, holds up on its own right with bangers like The Big Beat and You Should Be High Love.
Loved that Billy Squier album back in the day. Interesting tidbit: The drum line from his song "Big Beat" were sampled by a lot of early hip hop groups. You might also enjoy "In the Dark" and "Everybody Wants You." Two awesome rockers. Cheers to you guys, keep up the great reaction video work!
Big Beat is the most sampled drum piece, & actually its The most sampled piece of Music ever. Mailbox money for life & beyond...
@@andresflores1500 The most sampled would be The Amen Break.
The voice, the stage presence, the picking. Man's a gift.
Billy is simply awesome
Great album from beginning to end. This album is Billy at his finest and is, indeed, "raw." There is no pretense to this album. He has a lot of bangers.
Raw is a great way to say it. That’s what I love about classic rock. Good reaction!
Billy Squier! Can't believe it! Finally!
I was 12 and "Don't Say No" hit and Mtv had just started in '81. This song has aged perfectly.
The video aged perfectly! I'd run to my friend's house to watch MTV because our family didn't have cable
Been waiting awhile for this guy, should check out Everybody Wants You, Rock Me Tonite, and My Kinda Lover
Killer track that grabs you deep. Oh to be able to go back to those days
Billy is the man!
Great tune! I saw these guys in the early '80s - NEVER to this day have I seen a stage *COVERED* with bras and panties!!
Nice reaction - In the Dark if you are lining up Billy S. songs in the future. 1981 music to study by back in the day in the dorms.
Can't go wrong with any of Billy Squire!
This dude frickin jammed big time.
Grew up in 70s and 80s and I think best music made is from 1975 to 85 . So blessed to have had so much great music in my youth.
Way back in the 1970s, Billy Squier was in a band called Piper. The first concert that I ever went to was Kiss in 1977. Piper was the opening band. And on a side note, when I saw Kiss in 1979 the opening band was Judas Priest.
Believe it or not.....one of the best Christmas songs in "Christmas is a Time To Say I Love You"!!!
My absolute favorite Christmas song forever!!!!
"Raw" is a great way to describe Squire's music. Great choice!
Billy is from Massachusetts where i live..proud of my Massachusetts boy
In the late 70’s I went to a Journey concert, Billy Squire opened for them and blew everyone away!!
This whole album is FANTASTIC... Definitely one of my all time faves!
FINALLY! You NEED to hear more Billy Squier. :)
MY KINDA LOVER
IN THE DARK
His “live” concert videos are the ones to focus on!!!! He’s unreal! 😮
The Stroke and In the Dark are fire tunes from Billy Squire.🔥
In just under 6 months you HAVE TO listen to..... Christmas is the Time to Say "I Love You"
One of the best Christmas songs ever.
How did that Christmas song not become a monster? It is awesome!
I remember him singing that on MTV with all the staff and VJ’s in the video. It was so cool back then. They have to watch it this Christmas.
I agree!! The music video is him sitting with early MTV VJs and staff and crew and they are rocking out!!
Billy Squier played in Ringo's All-Star band more than a decade after this album. He's played witb Rock & Roll Royalty.
I saw Billy Squier open for Pat Benatar in Providence, RI in 1981. One of the most awesome concerts ever . . .
Billy is awesome! "everybody wants you", "the stroke", "my kinda lover".
Billy Squire, had some of the best love shows. Saw him at Red Rocks, The Stroke, was a hit then. Straight up rock-n-roll, gotta love that. Thanks for this memory.
My favorite Christmas song is actually a Billy Squier song "Christmas Is The Time To Say I Love You".
Now you have to react to his song, "Rock Me Tonight", the video destroyed his career but the song is awesome!
Thank you to whomever in comments for the led Zep reference! Totally hear it now! Never placed it even though I’ve liked it since it came out. This is where 70s rock was heading until mtv hit and changed the calculus. As someone mentioned he had a really wack video and couldn’t shift to the new medium. But for a while there he was the future.
You have to do IN THE DARK next. Amazing.
Great video thank you
The rawness in the sound, is the difference between when we used to record an analog as opposed to how everything is digitally mix now, my band used to record analog oh, you can hear almost every single sound
love watching you guys getting lost in the music, its awesome! i grew up listening to Billy all my childhood. Some of his best for you guys are "In The Dark", "The Stroke", "Everybody Wants You", "Rock Me Tonight", "All Night Long"
All right my babies.... I've seen Billy Squier three times in concert! This band sounds exactly like the records and cassette tapes! P.S. please try your best to always showcase "official videos" , so the whole RSR family can view these artists. 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
I don't know about sounding exactly like the recordings, or if I'd even want that. But his show at Meriweather Post Pavilion in probably '81 or '82 was pure energy. More running from wing to wing of the stage than I'd ever seen, before or since.
@@Hexon66 I'm sure when you seen the productions in the very early stages of Billy Squier's career, the band was just starting out. But when I seen all three productions, the band had more time behind them which made them tighter, stronger and probably sounded a lot better than what you witnessed. Plus, the technology of electronic mixing boards and sound engineers have evolved. But I'm glad that you had the experience to see them in their debut stages 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Yessss Billy Squier!! Wore out this album, especially this song! I’m back in high school💕😂
Billy Squier "Don't Say No" Album is great! Every song has its own power. The song "The Stroke" was the 1st song released and the hits just followed from there!!!!!!!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!!!!!!! Love love LOVE Billy Squier!!!!!
Yep, there is a grab bag to reach into with Mr. Squire, I see you guys doing many more from him...
"My Kinda Lover"
"In The Dark"
"Whadda Ya Want From Me"
Ect...
Squier is one of those artists who kind of got lost in the shuffle, but he has a great voice. I mistook this for a Led Zeppelin song the first time I heard it, which is quite the compliment. The drums are excellent.
I haven't heard this in ages. I loved this song back in the day.
Dammit, to heck!!! I only have two thumbs!
I'm throwing in my two huge toes, too!!!
So, I give this Artist, and Song, 4 thumbs up 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼!!!!
If you want one that hits hard outta the gate, try Everybody Wants You from him (you’ve probably heard at least part of it, it was used recently in a commercial I think). My Kinda Lover is also a great choice.
My kinda lover is rock gold! just perfection! especially the bridge!
Lots of great tunes from Billy...My Kind of Lover, Everybody Wants You and In the Dark are awesome too!
The album that this track is from is TOP NOTCH!! Every single track is unreal. Especially, What Do You Want From Me and Too Daze Gone....The album was released around 1981....
This was "top 40" when I was in High School! (I'm 58 now)😆 This took me back!❤❤
One of my favorite songs of all time! Pretty much all guitar players love this song! It's just simply so freaking cool to play along those simple but very catchy intro and riffs! And solo is also so on point for this kind of song!
A most excellent choice! Billy's 1982 album "Emotions in Motion" is a favorite of mine. You should check out "She's a Runner" and Learn How to Live"
Billy OWNED the airwaves that year. I remember it well. Everyone wanted to know about this guy who sounded like Robert Plant (we thought)..
YAY!! BILLY SQUIER!! 👍😃❣️
"She's A Runner" is my all time favorite Billy Squire song. Such great guitar and vocals, you'll LOVE it!
@Angela
Agreed!!! I bought 16 Strokes in the 2000s, that was the first time I heard "She's A Runner". Loved it from the first listen!
Definitely!
The most overlooked rocker on the planet!
folks use to compare billys vocals to robert plant. billy rocked in the early 80s in my life
One of my favorite artists when I was in high school! Yep. I'm old, lol.
Every song on this album is great. The Stroke. My Kind of Lover, Lonely Is The Night, In The Dark ae all on this album.
Billy was huge in the early to mid 80's. Songs like: The Stroke, My Kinda Lover, Eyes on You, In the Dark, and more!
AND he usually avoid the "over-produced" sound. IMO another reason for his audio success.
Billy had a sound that was different from the rest of the artists out there at the time. He almost a late 70's feel. Raw and real
I seen Billy Squire live back in 1982 and he was awesome live he was opening for Queen
You forgot Rock me Tonight
now that I think about it his song titles were very intimate or suggestive
Love squier. Great guitarist and singer
Billy Squier songs to check out: The stroke, In The Dark, Stronger, All Night Long, (I Put A) Spell On You, Everybody Wants You
