    Ive always been into JDM stuff. I am older than probably most of your viewers and you name it I love it from Initial D, to my fixed up Hondas I Have. Not the norm for someone almost 50 I really like your videos and want to build a small drift car. Don't want to jump into the expensive Mini Z game until I find out I like it. What is the best in your opinion starter car? The WL toys K989, one of these in this video? By best I mean easiest to work on, easy to get replacement parts etc. I am in the US if that helps with answering my questions. Thank you in advance.

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  4 роки тому

      For under $130 you really can't do better than K989. Unless you already have a radio, battery and charger I'd recommend Atomic AMZ.
      So you can start with K989 fix it and keep it running while saving up for AMZ.
      All the parts from these car are mostly from China so it'd be pretty hard to find spares in the US. AMZ is a popular race car so that might be an exception and you can probably find the parts in some mini race track.

    Hi Beaver, love the channel you have some great content!
    I have a question. I just ordered a MA-020s and I want these tires to be my first upgrade but I don’t understand rims. What size rims should I order to fit these drift tires? I will be using the skyline R33 body and Nissan Silvia body if that makes a difference for the rims fitting.
    I will be drifting on carpet so I think some good hard tired will help, but I have another question regarding gear rations. Should I go with the lowest gear ratio so I have more power on the carpet? I don’t understand gear rations so any advise is appreciated! Thanks Beaver!

    • @BeaversHobby
      @BeaversHobby  5 років тому +1

      R33 body uses 1.5mm offset narrow wheel on all corners But these DS tyres are narrow at the front and wide at the rear. So I suggest using 1 or 1.5mm offset narrow at the front and 0mm offset wide at the rear.
      S15 uses 1mm offset narrow wheels on all corners and 90mm wheelbase so you'll have to disassemble the car to change the wheelbase first. All in all, get 1mm offset narrow wheels for the front and 0mm offset wheels for the rear. You might have to shave rear wheel arches off to clear the tyres though.
      Next is gear ratio, to get maximum torque you need the pinion (gear on the motor) to be smallest and the spur (gear on centre shaft) to be largest. So I suggest 15T pinion and 31T spur.
      I'm not sure if you got reduction gear with the car but the part MD006 will have all the things you need.

      @@BeaversHobby Hi Beaver, thanks for the reply!
      I will link the MA020s I bought, as well as the auto scale I want. i think they will both be 90mm so i do not think i will need to adjust the wheel base, correct? So you think I should get 1mm offset rims for the front, and 0mm offset for the rear to use with these bodies?

    • @BeaversHobby

      @@BMR3 Unfortunately they have different wheelbase and wheel offset.
      The R33 GTR is 94mm with 1.5mm offset wheels but S13 Silvia is 90mm with 0mm offset wheels (it's 3mm narrower than GTR) so you'll need to change the wheelbase.
      kyosho.com/mini-z-info/support/body-specifications/
      The S13 comes with wheels though but they are all narrow so you'll have to get 0 offset wide wheels to fit DS racing rear tyres.
      For the front, get 0mm offset narrow wheels for S13 Silvia or 1.5mm offset for GTR if you want them to match the rear. Otherwise, use the wheels that come with the body.
      You have to choose which body you will commit to because these DS tyres are not coming off easily. So you either get 2 sets of wheels for each body or choose one.
      The charger consumes 1A so it's not going to work from computer unless you have a port that output 1A. Normally USB port outputs 0.5A. Anyway, you can use a smartphone charger with it.
      If you have Ikea near you, check their charger. It should be roughly the same price as this one but you plug it in to standard outlet.

      Beaver's Hobby thank you so much for the info!! You have been extremely helpful and are saving me a lot of headache since I thought all ma-020 bodies will be 90mm! I would have tried to force the S13 body on a 94mm set up and I would most likely have broken something. Thank you very much for the link to that chart, I will have to reference that when choosing an alternative body.
      Thank you for the information regarding the charger, I did not know that a computer would be so low power. I will find 1A phone charge to work
      Are you on any forums? I would love to be able read up on the Mini-z, but all of the forums I have found do not contain good info, it’s all useless, or pertaining to the MA-03 & racing set ups.

    what rims are you using for these tires? or what rims do you recommend to have different tire setups with

      With the LF-4 I use standard Mini-Z rims 1.5mm offset front and 1mm offset rear. You can find them in Kyosho Mini-Z dealer near you.
      For the other tyres I use RC-Aurora 1mm offset both front and rear. ppm-rcracing.com/categories/RC%252dAurora-racing/Rims/
      With DRZ and RWD I generally use lowest offset so the turning point is not swing out too much and to adjust it to fit the body too.
      I recommend around 0-2mm offset.
      With Q7, dial in some camber and 0 offset will rub against suspension arm so starting 1-2 offset is good.

      Front one way and rear solid for a start. Then you can try soft front spring and rear hard spring, weight down the front and also front toe out variant from 1-3 degrees. As for rear toe 0-1 degree is good. CS is not entirely necessary as long as you satisfy with how the car going in to slide or how you don't have to hold counter steer. The car is not really suitable for running on street because ground clearance isn't that much. You can use WLtoys P929 (monster truck) wheels and tyres but I don't know how it will turn out.
      The other tyres I suggest for the job are that you find some bicycle grip whether foam or rubber then cut it to size. That way you'll get more ground clearance than any tyres on the market.
