That episode made re zero peak for me, it was like "oh you want to escape from your problems and pretend like you have none while you rot? Nah, I'm gonna lovingly yet sternly help you see your flaws and just how repulsive they are when you see them in another person so that you may desire to grow" re zero for me is the anti power fantasy, it's a story that rejects escapism, and thoughtless pandering, it's a story that loves and understands you and written with the goal of giving the audience the will and desire to better themselves! That's why re zero for me is completely priceless

To Me , Episode 13 is kind of a perfect episode because it's so hard to watch . It's an Episode which highlights all of Subaru biggest character flaws and shows us how awful a person can be if their flaws are highlighted . The main flaws in Subaru's character throughout Arcs 1 , 2 & 3 are his lack of respect of other people's agency , his Ego (which can be summed up as essentially his version of main character syndrome ) & his sense of inadequacy , all of whom are tackled well during this Episode .
Is it a hard watch ? definitely , It still is even after rewatching the series for the 5/6th time . But is it an amazingly written Episode that sets up the main conflict of Arc 3 & a central aspect of Subaru's own internal conflict throughout the rest of the series? Also yes .
Also , It gets even better & even harder to watch once it's recontextualised by Arcs 4 & 6 , hell it even becomes kinda tragic

Two sides of the same coin, people who say it is bad see it as a standalone episode, and people who say it is good look at it as the series and character as a whole. Opposing views, but a thin line is between liking and hating it. As someone who likes Episode 13, those who don't like the episode is because of the negative emotions they felt and that's understandable. But no one can say it isn't important.

Prior to this episode, Re:Re Zero was still not too far from the General Isekai Structure, Subaru saves the day multiple times, he is called a hero by rem, he uses RBD to his advantage and it is shown as a positive, his naivety, loyalty, and foolishness doesn't come in too much conflict with the story.
In this episode it is a real rebuttal to who Subaru is, his loyalty is not towards Emilia, but a Idealized view of her, he barely even gets to truly know her. He wasn't supposed to be at the meeting anyways, its blind loyalty, loyalty towards the idea being for Emilia not true loyalty to Emilia. His foolishness and naivety was played up for laughs and even benefited him before, its how he got close to Emilia, but here its shown that he cant go on like this forever. Hes held on to this idealized view of a hero, of a knight that he embarrasses himself and Emilia.
Its even more interesting how later episodes contextualize it, like his Talk with his father showing his pre-Isekai insecurity and fear of being left behind.

That's the thing, we who LOVE this episode, we don't feel this second hand embarrassment anymore. Because now we see past Subaru, the surface level of him. In a sense Subaru isn't even in this episode for me, not the way he is depicted.
When he tells Julius "Don't act like a big-shot with your daddy's name" I don't see Subaru the 17 year old, almost an adult, making a mockery of himself, I see the little boy from S02E04 . The little boy who could never measure up to the expectations he had for himself as his father's child.
When Emilia tells the council "Subaru is not my attendant", I don't feel the public embarrassment that should follow, I only hear the next line as "This is my knight, Natsuki Subaru" - S03E01 . We see you, Natsuki Subaru. You are a true Knight.
During his fight against Julius in the arena, Subaru throws sand at him, a dishonorable move. But when you have nothing but your determination and what can fit in your palm. Earth, stone, sand, and whatnot, plain yet crafty, the absolute best, isn’t it? He is fighting with everything he has, even if it makes him the villain.
The same with using Shamak. Julius remarks "This was the ace up your sleeve? Such low-level magic will only work on unintelligent beasts!" we flash back to S01E11 when he uses it on the Ulgarm to save Rem and Ram. But also we see shamak used in the future. Against Elsa both in S02E06

E13 is a filter episode and it really needed to happen to filter out people that are here for something that is not Re:Zero. It shows pretty well that characters in the show all of them are flawed and imperfect. Its not your power fantasy isekai or a power of friendship shonen. All characters have a bit of a "scummy" side. The series is about exploring this side and either making characters fix themselves or accept and acknowledge it. Arc 3 was Subaru accepting his flaws and moving on to be a better person. Arc 4 was Emilia accepting she has been useless due to internalizing hatred and she should have grown a spine to stand by and fight alongside Subaru when he needed it. People that dropped Re:Zero in E13 do not acknowledge this imperfection. Therefore they wouldn't enjoy rest of the series that explores this imperfection. Thats why you see people saying "Subaru is a cry baby". They expect him to be inhuman.

  • @sigiligus

Some people just don’t understand the series. Sounds condescending but it’s simply true. It’s not another isekai, it’s a character study of Subaru. If you go into it knowing that, it’s a perfectly fine episode. But it’s also the first arc that really starts off the series properly. The first two arcs introduce important elements and establish important things, but until this arc Subaru is more or less just an isekai protagonist with a twist on his power (weak but potentially omniscient). This arc begins the deep dive into his psyche, and the rest of the series is based on the same style of building up his confidence and then smashing him to pieces again, and watching how he changes as a result over time.

You can hate watching an episode while understanding that it makes the series great. It can still be hard to watch. But it is also what makes the episodes that follow meaningful. Which might call into question the idea of ranking individual episodes at all for a heavily serial story.

i think ppl get confused when watching this ep!imo this is one of the best made episodes of the series, its job was to make the watcher unconfortable,to make him "hate" subaru.till that point we were with him thru all the shit he went thru and we were rooting for him!to makes us yell to our screens was an great job from the writter....and the reward we got in the next episodes was dope af!!for the longest time i thought of this ep as one of the worst eps of the series but after some rewatches i finally understood that it did its job more than just good!!i adore this story and my only complain is that tepei-sensei kinda "rushed" to give us arc 7 n 8 (propably cause the light novel deadlines) cause he worked on other projects(vivy, isekai suicide squad etc..),i just wish he can focus on re:zero till he ends it,specially cause we re near the end now(we re at arc9 and i think he planed 11-13 arcs).

Something that is even shown in volume 4. He was projecting onto Emilia. Even the novels say it.
Volume 4: He remembered that she'd used the word please for both.
Both times, Emilia had strongly urged him to behave out of concern for his health. But Subaru had trampled on her words each time based on his own selfish delusions. Somewhere deep down inside, he had thought of things so frivolously, as if good results would always let him smooth over his broken promises. But as a result, Subaru had not only disregarded her pleas, but didn't have a single proper thing to show for it; indeed, he'd only disgraced himself and held her back.
But even so, he at least wanted her to understand that the underlying motivations were genuine.
"I'm sorry I didn't listen to you. I'm really, really sorry. But! But you're wrong, I, I didn't do them for my sake..."
But Subaru's tongue cramped like it had gone numb, rejecting his efforts to put feelings into words. As he flailed for words, Emilia stared at him with sadness.
His words were unforgivably selfish. He never should have said them.
    "Emilia, don't you...believe me?"
Someone who had just denied that she could understand him had no right
    to say any of it.
"I want to believe you... I want to believe you, Subaru."
She sounded like she wanted to cry. She might have already been crying.
But Subaru didn't have the courage to find out. He couldn't bring himself to look at her, even though she might be in tears; even though he might have been the reason why she was in such a state. Subaru had continued running forward trying to avoid that, but at the most critical moment, Subaru Natsuki just-
    Her emotions exploded.
"I wanted to believe you...but you're the one who stopped me, Subaru!" Though she had sometimes lost her calm and logical demeanor to anger before, this was the first time he had seen her cast them aside, like shackles on her emotions. Freed of those restraints, Emilia poured her overflowing feelings into words.
"You didn't uphold a single promise, did you, Subaru? You...promised, but you broke them all like they were nothing and ended up here, didn't you?!"
He'd trampled on the promises they made together-in other words, her trust.
His claim, that he had done it all for her, was moral justification that only held meaning for Subaru himself.
Emilia carried on, saying, "You haven't kept your word, but then say you want me to trust you..? However you ask, I can't do that. I can't..."
No!, he wanted to cry out in a loud voice. But in reality, Subaru's trembling throat made no sound; his head felt as heavy as lead, too heavy to lift from its lowered, face-down position.
In front of the crying girl, whose emotions he had toyed with, who sought an honest answer from him-Subaru chose to turn his back to her, and thus, continue to betray her.

  • @Nothingtoseriousfr
    @Nothingtoseriousfr 2 місяці тому +1

Ep 13 is cringe but He wasn't wrong about the knights though? They deliberately under their own oath and free will insulted one of the royal candidates for the throne despite inviting her there? Do you understand how backhanded that is? Just look at the state of luginica before subaru arrived. The whale was roaming freely and taking the lives and even stealing the existence of others, completely letting the ones close to them forget them entirely. Look at the whale fight and tell me without subaru, they would've pulled off a victory. Or how they couldn't even locate the whale without subarus scent from the WOE. Or how he used his determination to inspire crusch to make a speech, and how this specific moment in ep 13 makes it all the more relatable to the audience and how crusch acknowledged how he's physically the weakest, yet still was the only one unaffected and fought against the whale, and even came up with the plan of using the tree to entrap it to begin with. Go look at how the Manga shows roswaal almost killing subaru in front of an entire room of royal knights, go look at how those same royal knights would've killed subaru if not for julius stepping up and saving him by beating him like that. And finally, go look at how priscilla, a royal candidate tried to kill felt if not for Reinhardt. So apparently, all of these big royal ups can literally commit multiple crimes and disrespect their own despite their positions and code, yet subaru gets all the blame because he directly calls out all the knights for insulting a royal candidate for their appearance they cannot control. Yet you're telling me subaru deserved to be
    1. Kicked and threatened by priscilla after desperately begging her for help to save the village of arlam, despite him following her rule.
    2. Disrespected by crusch and called a madman because of his rage towards the witch cults actions.
    3. Literally scammed by Anastasia, and even brought up his past to demoralize his inner self esteem even further.
    4. The fact that he was pushed away by two of the only people who are his moral support says enough. Even rems self sacrifice causes him to blame himself even further.
This is why I say that ep 13 afterwards was unnecessarily cruel towards subaru. You're telling me all of these knights were willing to shun and kill a civilian despite them disrespecting a royal candidate and even witnessing a royal candidate try to murder another one? Lol, it's funny considering how subaru was the one right in the end all along. He's singlehandedly the only competent knight who's achieved more for a world who completely treats him like trash.
Edit: this episode only deleb paints subaru in a bad light to divide the fans and showcase how "unlikable" and how selfish a human can be in the most dire of situations and emotion.
However, subaru is still one of the most selfless beings if not the most selfless in that world. He may have did it for himself at that time, but afterwords, he fully blames himself for what happened after his conversation with rem despite everyone in that world treating him otherwise.

I'll admit, that episode was a very hard episode to sit through when I first watched it, the second hand embarrassment I felt while watching Subaru was unmatched. But I think it was an important and necessary episode to the Anime, it shows that even kind hearted people that had a bit of character development can still easily fall back on their flaws and do stupid stuff, and it shows that Subaru was still a long way from the actual hero we should be rooting for. It was a painful episode, but it was a necessary one.
