Also with that part I accidentally cut out the remote play over Mac comparison. I'll add it as short soon. I made a mistake about HotSpot, iPhones switch to cellular when you connect to them, but my Pixel 8 Pro doesn't do that it relays WiFi to the connected device. As some of you mentioned some Android phones allow you to use hotspot as relay, the thing threw me off about this test was my Speedtest showed Google Fi when I was testing this. However I confirmed it by putting the phone in airplane mode it does relay wifi. I
For the PS Portal has been a game changer. I now play the PS5 more than I used to. I have a solid Wi-FI connection and it’s been working perfectly. I hope they bring cloud streaming to it.
Thank you for finally showing some positivity towards the Portal I have thoroughly enjoyed it as well and has me playing more ps5 than ever before too. For people talking about their download speeds keep in mind if you are playing in your house DL and UL speeds do not matter as you are not playing over internet. But I did have the google next mesh wifi and it did not run very well in my house. I upgraded to the google next mesh Pro and it made a world of difference. I know the portal is not Wifi 6 but upgrading to a wifi 6e network made a huge different and I am assuming just because a big benefit of wifi6 is how is handles bandwidth distribution not just faster speeds.
I don’t know why? Everyone is complaining about this PS Portal! I’ve had since launch and absolutely love ❤️ this device! Playing Uncharted 4 remaster and loving every minute of it! Played for over 3hrs last night. Not one lost connection or issue. Highly recommend it! 👍🏼
How many times am I allowed to comment? This is literally the best review I have seen for this unit, and I have watched a ton of them. I hope you know how good you are!
I am loving my portal. I sold my steam deck in less than two months. Made more sense for me as a father of two who just wants to game casually every now and thenIt’s very comfortable. Probably the most comfortable device I’ve held.
@@sleepdeprived9181 the battery life was the worst I’ve experienced on a handheld. Was noisy too. Requires a lot of tweaking to get some games to work and even then it’s not the most enjoyable experience since battery life is bad. Honestly the Nintendo OLED is better handheld gaming experience compared to the SD in my opinion and for those sweet AAA titles you’ve got the PS5 and now the portal which is great to take your PS5 games elsewhere.
Different devices, different libraries. This comment is a bit strange without more context imho. Did you have to buy games again? Are you mainly a PS Player? This changes the whole angle. I.e. as a PC player for 24 years with a huge library on Steam for me the Deck makes even more sense than a PS5 itself, but I wouldn’t say that the Deck makes me sell a PS5…
6:24 On some Android phones (esp Chinese brand), you can actually use the hotspot with WiFi connected at the same time. It will act as a repeater. So, in a captive portal hotspot, you can log in with your phone first, and then share the connection to the PS Portal. Yes, the latency will increase, but at least it is doable (unlike on the iPhone).
I just got mine and I've been enjoying it . When I'm tired of sitting at the desk I hop on my portal in the bed or on the couch. Graphics and gameplay is really good. I also tried it away from my home at a friends and it still played well. Honestly this thing for only $200 Is worth it. For those who say "I can remote play on my phone" .. It is not the same experience. And I have a z fold 5
I remember during the PS2 days seeing an advertisement in a magazine for a PS2 controller that had a built-in screen. Well three console generations later we now have one for the mainstream
I sold my steam deck for this. And I do not regret it. Witcher 3, GoW, Fallen Order, everything runs amazingly, if it doesn’t for you, you have bad internet and also need a wifi extender and connect your ps5 to wired lan, easy. The speakers are loud, streaming saves so much battery so this makes sense! Just needs Bluetooth.
Always love your videos and reviews. PlayStation portal is always sold out and only available by invitation in Japan and sold 100$+ up marked “new” on flea market pages. I have been waiting for 4 months soon lol. It’s a real shame Sony doesn’t get it right.
Just want to write something down thats been on my mind for a long time i think you deserve a much bigger audience and subscriber base given the quality to put out in your videos amazing production quality and editing love your In-Depth Reviews I am a professional photographer myself , thought i should tell you you are doing pretty good and keep doing what you do one day you will have millions of subscribers that you truly deserve :)
A future update with a browser… ps plus direct streaming and a softkeyboard… would launch this thing… and then OLED, bigger battery and Wifi 6e for PS Portal Pro… would be killer.
I use mine for more casual games while taking long baths. Also hotspot in the lorry works fine, I do have charging spots in the cab aswell as limitless data from my mobile carrier.
I've been catching up on my backlog whenever possible. I feel like indie games especially perform the best or at least play the best. The games look natively installed with that screen, it's incredible, I even compared the Switch Oled to this screen and it's much better. For people who want to use hotspots, consider buying a portable hotspot like the Acer Enduro.
I absolutely love it. Been using it for about a month i haven't had any issues as of yet. Changing profiles was our biggest obstacle but we found an easy fix for it through the ps app. Im hoping for cloud play in the future
i play cod and gran turismo all the time on mine! it requires a strong network in your house and make sure your ps5 is hard wired. i currently have a google mesh 6g network and its great
I like that it has dualsense features, but the lack of video out via usbc ruins it for me. Xreal air/beam with my switch and steam deck made me realize that I don’t like it when the screen is stuck on the controller. It’s just not ergonomic. It’s much nicer to have a headset display a virtual screen in your glasses than to stare down at your hands while seated or hold the device above your head while lying down.
Maybe they should say home play, i think theres a lot of confusion cause people call it a dedicated remote play device then see its not capable of all remote play features ,also as someone thats been using remote play for years I think people get confused when they start enjoying playing playstation games as a handheld experience and really enjoy it then hear people saying the portal is bad, people are conflating their enjoyed experience of playing playstation games in a handheld format with criticisms of the device
I played Fallout 4 in my car, over my phone hotspot, and only experienced one moment of staggering. As far as I’m concerned, it now replaces my Steam Deck.
Great video, thank you. I'm on the fence with portal, sadly they are out of stock in the UK, ebay prices are slightly above retail but seems to be coming down as people understand the limitations. I think I'll hold off after this review, not being able to pull the PS5 out of rest mode with the portal feels like a miss. Also the HDR is also an issue as most will use this. Thanks once again!
I have a Xaomi Android phone as a 2nd phone (lost my iphone for a few weeks last year), which allows me to hot spot wifi! it's awesome. So if I'm going away I take that with me as well to use as a hotspot.
You went through like every feature I wondered about! And although I kinda hate this device, I also really want it. Hopefully most of these issues can be fixed with patches though. Some of them are dead set crazy. Although the no Bluetooth is just sooooo stupid
best video i've seen on portal so far, thanks for the detailed tests about the screen and latency, makes me more convinced I'm fine using ps remote on my rog ally instead. Great stuff!
Abi selam.
Great video thanks! Love that you measured the thumbtacks! Wifi signal is only part the problem. I have a 6E network (Unifi based) and have been happily playing on the Quest 3 using Virtual Desktop or moonlight with a total latency of 15ms - 20ms when you consider the encoding, network latency (3ms) and decoding. With a mouse and keyboard, I've found that a total latency over 25ms makes playing FPS games like BF 2042 frustrating, with a "jelly" feel to the mouse. Using a controller is of course more forgiving. I've tested Moonlight with various devices and found that the quality of the decoder really impacts the feeling of lag. e.g. the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Z Fold and S9 Tab Ultra are unfortunately too slow for me with a overall latency of ~40ms. The iPad Pro with M2 has a really fast decoder, as does the AMD Z1 Extreme, 7840u and the decoders in the 13900k, 12900H. Oddly, the decoder in the M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra is too slow, or there's a bug in the Moonlight software for macOS (or macOS itself)..and is on par with the one in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The Quest 3 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 SOC and its HEVC decoder (and AV1 decoder) is fast enough for me not to perceive lag, although AMD and Intel's more recent decoders are faster. Given that the Quest 3's HEVC decoder is fast and the Snapdragon Gen 2 is much slower, I'm really curious about how fast the PS Portal's decoder is (which uses a Qualcomm 662 SOC).
Awsome video faruk first of all 🎉 but in my oppinion it not that a nesescery device i think it just doesnt for everyone only a little part of a comunity and i think thisis a product that came too early and they didnt fixed the problems during devoloping and they are fixing them (kinda) after they released it , in my opinnion it was a product to fill the time between ps 5 and pro slim models ,but atleast the screen could be oled and has 4k resolution in hdr .
PS Portals' performance is dependent on your home internet infrastructure. I have two WiFi Boosters around my house, so more or less have excellent WiFi signal all over. I've disabled HDCP from within my PS5 HDMI settings and reduced 99 percent of any lag or stutters. But disconnecting your HDMI eliminated lag altogether but is not practical. I use the Portal at work using my Hotspot with around 280mbps speeds, and you would assume the Portal is running games natively. I have a house full, so I normally get to use the TV after 10pm these days, so have been getting my gaming time in predominantly via the Portal. Playing through Days Gone for the Platinum atm, enjoying the Portal personally, still confused as to why cloud gaming doesn't work on here but hopefully over time it will come.
I bought a wifi 6 router and made it have less latency and stronger connectivity anywhere in the house, also the PS5 Pro that is coming out will probably be able to stream with even less latency
I wonder if there was an imagining by Sony of a server based “remote play” subscription service? Ultimately they possibly realized that remote play wasn’t satisfactory. Could definitely explain some of those weird underlying software features like airplane mode, etc.
I’m sure Sony can make several updates and fix many of these ‘problems’ i hope many changes come and this becomes another great underrated accessory. I haven’t seen someone hook up two of these yet to see a game of Madden or any other 2 player game how that would work etc…….. lets hope Sony listens to these videos and makes some good changes…..nice video….thank you…..peace
Great video, nice way to explain it, but I love the portal it’s great, and works solid it too me with my internet to get better connection make sure you double check your PS5 is connected to wired cause sometimes it will switch to WiFi even if it’s wired but it’s awesome more updates and features will prolly release soon cause PlayStation did the same thing when the PS5 first launch and you couldn’t update the SSD until a few software updates came out, so they have to be holding out just to see how it would do in the market. But we will see, happy holidays & God Bless
I love my Portal but I found that if my Internet is down I can't use it because it wants to connect to the PlayStation Network; several weeks ago we lost both our power and Internet and even though our generator was running our router and both the PS5 and Portal were connected to WiFi it wouldn't allow me to play. :( Hopefully that's something they fix in a future update.
Great video thanks man. I really understood the device better after watching your video. Love the roundup of views from family. I am going to keep using my iPad for remote play. One thing I wish you covered: does using the Portal mean you have complete dualsense triggers/haptics features or more like standard remote play?
I think if a person owns their games in their library, they should be able to stream them to, and a streaming handheld Consol would be better than a RemotePlay one
The portal will only get better with updates. Sony set teh expectations upfront. However, some users will always push the boundaries regarding technology. I enjoyed your video and well said, it's a device where you can sit back on the couch or patio and play some cool games remotely. Sony was also smart when creating this device because I can guarantee it drove PS sales because you still need a PS5 to connect. Give Sony some time; I'm sure with each update, the portal will gain functionality and features, and you just never know what hidden hardware is inside the device waiting for Sony to enable.
To all the people who own this and love it, I have one question. Do most of you have your ps5 hard wired? I just purchased this and I’m a little concerned because mine isn’t and it would be pretty difficult to hard wire mine because my router and ps5 are on separate floors. I just hope I don’t have buyers remorse. I watched a few videos about the portal and they really complain of lag.
No issues at home and I don’t have the fastest internet. No issues 20 miles away on better internet. No issues 50 miles away on my dad congested Wi-Fi. I couldn’t even play remote play and backbone at my dads before, but I can in the portal😂 Just try it for yourself and see if it works for you💯
The operating system of the device is Android. Sony is limited in its own way. It has the feature of playing games from the cloud, but it's a shame that it doesn't use it.
i think it was meant to enable a trophy hunting addiction further so you can pop those trophies on holiday without lugging your ps5 with you everywhere you go.
Good video. I'm confident that over time, Sony will open more features for the Portal. When the PS5 was released, it was pretty vanilla. Overtime, Sony expanded the capabilities of the system. Based on the demand for the Portal, more will be released. It's just a matter of time.
Its an overpriced screen with a controller attached. The hardware in it is barebones... Even if Sony wanted to, they can't do more with it than game streaming.
Hi, non- purchaser here! This video was great! You made it personal and took us into your home to explain real life situations. No Bluetooth connect or media? That's just asinine! Maybe this was the first iteration and the next will be when the Pro arrives... Anyways... Subbed
Any of the mobile controllers are the more superior options however I like this guy video as he isnt just shilling the portal he is saying what it is and how it is
a good review, but I bought it and sold it after 1 day of use. I don't think it's still worth buying... not being able to use any bluetooth headset, not being able to watch videos, not being able to listen to music applications, a lot of latency when playing online in competitive mode... for me it's not worth it, for remote use at home I prefer to use the iPad with an app and a dualsense controller... even so, I hope Sony updates and improves it and in the future I can buy it again.
Ours keeps disconecting. And it just stops working, freezes while palying games. It is unusable really, even if we stay close to the wifi hub in our house, and even if we have the fastest wifi out there. I wonder why do people give this high grades. It is a flawed product which should not be sold. Shame on Sony for this money grab. They are soiling their name.
Great video. I returned mine solely because it failed bedroom mode as you mentioned and no bluetooth. Also, I'll add it is no better than using remote play on my iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Too bad...this could have been an awesome device.
Did you compare the latency with remote play on other devices? I haven’t tried this yet, but I do occasionally remote play on my iPad mini, and there’s both some lag, and the image quality drops… this seems normal
In your settings on your ps5, you have to turn on “ turn ps5 on from remote play” or something along the lines of that. Trust me . Thanks for the video
2nd version? i hope this is the last version they will do this, firmware update it is fine, we need a new PSP version instead, PS4 specs on a small form factor i think the technology is here, AMD did great on new devices now
Your phone hotspot statement is not correct. Connect your phone to any Wi-Fi and enable hotspot and it will relay. I don't know if this works like that on iPhones. I work in IT and we use Pixel Phones and this feature a lot. Pretty sure Samsung does this as well
Honestly I'm glad I wasn't able to buy one. Knowing PlayStation they're going to have an updated one with in the new year that's going to cost $400 to $600. I think this was just a test unit to see how many people would buy it and what they think.

Hopefully that's something they fix in a future update.
In a way it should be its on console that plays playstation games
Very detailed review. Cheers!
Hey..... Haven't seen your channel before but after hearing " so yeah it failed in the bedroom department" you have a new sub 🤣😂
That shit is the best thing Sony ever drop I love my remote, portable
It’s been a lot more stable for me recently. I wonder if the recent update fixed things.
Great video thanks man. I really understood the device better after watching your video. Love the roundup of views from family. I am going to keep using my iPad for remote play. One thing I wish you covered: does using the Portal mean you have complete dualsense triggers/haptics features or more like standard remote play?
Backbone mu yoksa portal mı hangisini alayım
You can hotspot the wifi connection from your Android phone just not from iPhone!
I couldn’t even play remote play and backbone at my dads before, but I can in the portal😂
Just try it for yourself and see if it works for you💯
I love my Portal!
iphonedo is one of my fav reviewers
Why doesn't it support streaming cloud games?
The operating system of the device is Android. Sony is limited in its own way. It has the feature of playing games from the cloud, but it's a shame that it doesn't use it.
You can see percent of battery just need to enable on settings
That came with an update long after I released this.
i think it was meant to enable a trophy hunting addiction further so you can pop those trophies on holiday without lugging your ps5 with you everywhere you go.
Even if Sony wanted to, they can't do more with it than game streaming.
they seriously need to sort out media playback via software update. Cannot believe that is disabled, no excuses for that.
For me playing my games when tv with ps5 is unavailable.
I dont get it, is that literally an handle console like PSP or cloud gaming console like Logitech G Cloud?
lol at making me think your hands were your partners at 2:14-2:17
Hi, non- purchaser here!
This video was great! You made it personal and took us into your home to explain real life situations.
No Bluetooth connect or media? That's just asinine! Maybe this was the first iteration and the next will be when the Pro arrives...
Anyways... Subbed
The pro ?? This isnt an iPhone bro
@@kash-tz1ee
Man's think he's smart but has no idea about a PS5 pro... Bro
The Gamesir G8 has indisputably emerged as the superior choice when compared to the Playstation Portal.
Any of the mobile controllers are the more superior options however I like this guy video as he isnt just shilling the portal he is saying what it is and how it is
a good review, but I bought it and sold it after 1 day of use. I don't think it's still worth buying... not being able to use any bluetooth headset, not being able to watch videos, not being able to listen to music applications, a lot of latency when playing online in competitive mode... for me it's not worth it, for remote use at home I prefer to use the iPad with an app and a dualsense controller... even so, I hope Sony updates and improves it and in the future I can buy it again.
hahahaha when you say Netflix and chill :P
Ours keeps disconecting. And it just stops working, freezes while palying games. It is unusable really, even if we stay close to the wifi hub in our house, and even if we have the fastest wifi out there.
I wonder why do people give this high grades. It is a flawed product which should not be sold. Shame on Sony for this money grab. They are soiling their name.
6:04 Bring a travel router.
Great video. I returned mine solely because it failed bedroom mode as you mentioned and no bluetooth. Also, I'll add it is no better than using remote play on my iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Too bad...this could have been an awesome device.
Some phones can hotspot wifi to wifi. My S21FE
Mine doesn’t work unless I disconnect the hdmi. That’s all. Everything else is great lol
Still no IPhone 15 review video? Will it arrive before the iPhone 16 is introduced?
I don’t know what you bought but I’ve been using my AirPods Pro’s with a Bluetooth dongle on my portal and it works flawlessly, it does work.
Did you compare the latency with remote play on other devices? I haven’t tried this yet, but I do occasionally remote play on my iPad mini, and there’s both some lag, and the image quality drops… this seems normal
No WiFi6? Crazy
In your settings on your ps5, you have to turn on “ turn ps5 on from remote play” or something along the lines of that. Trust me . Thanks for the video
2nd version? i hope this is the last version they will do this, firmware update it is fine, we need a new PSP version instead, PS4 specs on a small form factor i think the technology is here, AMD did great on new devices now
My only concern is..... Did they sort the stick drift issue with the dualsense controller
06:30 on Android you can
This thing has absolutely nothing that would make me want to buy it and I love my gaming and gadgets.
Your phone hotspot statement is not correct. Connect your phone to any Wi-Fi and enable hotspot and it will relay. I don't know if this works like that on iPhones. I work in IT and we use Pixel Phones and this feature a lot. Pretty sure Samsung does this as well
Yes, you are right. It can easily be done on Android.
It does have a browser this video needs an update along with all the other information. Sorry brother for stepping in
wir freuen uns auf neue Videos
Honestly I'm glad I wasn't able to buy one. Knowing PlayStation they're going to have an updated one with in the new year that's going to cost $400 to $600. I think this was just a test unit to see how many people would buy it and what they think.
