  • Since we bought Atticus, we've dreamed of sailing to Panama to transit the Panama Canal and cross the Pacific. We've come a long way since our first fiberglass fix, our first passage, our first storm and our first argument as captain and mate. In this episode, we finally sail to Panama and are forced to confront a daunting wall of lighting that we have to sail through while Jordan struggles with seasickness.

    You guys really are amazing.....no furling gear, no self-tailing winches, no watermaker, etc, all on a relatively small boat. An inspiration to many I'm sure! Just shows what can be accomplished with grit, determination, a great attitude & a love of adventure.

    Hey mate (buddy), your words of wisdom at the end were pure gold and good onya: “Time and time again we find ourselves in challenging and difficult situations, but we have learnt that if just hold out and push through to the other side, the rewards are always worth the struggle. Each time we face our fears and each time we accept our discomfort we become a little bit stronger”.

    When I first reported the board ship out of Charleston, South Carolina in my Navy days, I never got sick. I thought I had some sea legs. In about 3 years in when it hit head really hit hard. In fact, it happened just south of where you are. Just east of Argentina. Love you both. Keep up the good work. And your focus.

    You both summed it up pretty well at the end of this episode. It’s all worth the trials and tribulations of cruising the seas-when you finally get to the other side and the stress is relieved. And I agree, you become stronger. You certainly demonstrate that. How I wish I had set the same goals-as you did-a long time ago. Keep it up guys. We all are pulling for you.

    as funny as this comment sounds, I love the fact that you addressed sea sickness! That has been the one thing that I've always wondered with all these sailing channels. It always looks so fun and adventurous but no one shows the salty sea dogs getting sick, it's always the guests. So it's nice to see you are also human and that it does come with the territory. Just makes me feel more realistic.

    • @StofStuiver

      Everybody probably knows this, but
      Its caused by the movement which your inner ear registers, especially if the eyes do not see the same movement.
      So in order to prevent it, watch in the direction you are going. Horizon and incoming waves.
      Dont read or anything, bc that will greatly increase the chances of getting seasick. (no moviewatching, no computerwork, etc)
      Better not lay down, unless you really have to. Close your eyes and focus on the movement.

      Sailing Project Atticus thank you Desiree for your fast response. I am well. We are getting tired of the walls around us but on we march. This virus isn’t as bad as the media says. Sun, good diet and the ocean are all in your favor. If you two ever make up to Newport Beach California I can be of help around town. I’ve spent 45 years sailing, mostly racing and some distant deliveries which is why I so enjoy your journey and UMA’s as well. Sail on and have fair winds !! 😎

    At about 5 minutes and in other spots in this episode it looks like Jordan has his spare tether hook snapped back onto the harness rings. You don't want to do this. The harness end of the tether is a quick-release snap shackle, but if you hook the spare tether to your harness you'll still be connected to the boat with no way to release under load. Short lanyard loop on the bail of the snap shackle gives you a convenient place to put the boat ends of the tethers when they're not clipped in.

    • @MsDebs73
      @MsDebs73 5 років тому

      on the one hand I was impressed that they're so safety conscious, on the other, I was wondering if there is a quick release in the event the boat ends up turned over. I don't know anything about the equipment.

    • @timhohmann7545
      @timhohmann7545 5 років тому

      @@MsDebs73 There is a quick release on the harness end, difficult to see in the video. But the blue clips are not designed to release under load so they should only be attached to the boat, not the harness rings.

    You guys will love the Pacific...”You walk in to a store and everyone says good morning”. I still get on busses, whether it be in New York City or some small little place in the Indian Ocean and say good morning to everyone...In many places they look at me like I’m nuts. I don’t care...I think it’s a beautiful thing, so I will always do it...thank you Pacific Islanders!
    Love watching you guys...you bring tears to my eyes remembering the places you are now both geographically and personally, that we were at 10 years ago. And you are right...the slower you go, the more enjoyable it becomes. We are 12 years out now and only halfway around the world...and we are going slower and slower and slower. I love it! Enjoy...I wish I could give 10 thumbs up! -Rebecca

    I can not find the words to express how I feel waiting for your episodes to come in :) !!! This one is of course is simply awesome and the wait was worth it. The two of you communicate your adventures so well that I feel like I am on the boat with you, and I constantly find myself laughing with you, along with worried with you. On this one I could actually "smell land" hehehe. Loved every second, stay safe and I hope you are having a great time back in the states right now "Buds" !!!
