  • After a fourteen day sprint in the boatyard, our energy reserve is dwindling and our patience is tested over and over again after facing multiple setbacks.
    In this episode we install our new mast bases, the bobstay chainplate, and the mast head with some modifications. We put our masts back on Atticus and when we finally get underway, we experience some issues with our newly installed stuffing box.

    You never cease to impress me with your skills. And you have a wonderful assistant. I'm still digging your hard dodger that I watched you create a long time ago. Desirée speaks great Spanish. I recently learned you're 6'4" tall. Never realized that from early videos. Now I see you tower over the locals. I grew up in Latin America and it's great to visit remote areas I will never reach. Your boat work is fun to watch. The goodwill of the people you encounter warms my soul. Keep a going.

    Desire...an aviation tip for you. The best way trim up a fresh silicone bit with your finger tip is to wet the finger tip with a solution of water and dish washing liquid (DAWN). It make your finger tip slippery and the silicone won't stick to your finger. It works so good that we use it in aviation repairs and antennas installations. Enjoy it !

    As we are on almost complete lock-down here in NY, and with both college kids home on virtual classes, it's nice to watch you guys busting your butts and making huge progress. I'm finding and working on all the home projects that have needed attention for so long and actually looking forward to doing something that takes our minds off of this virus crap! You guys are my entertainment!

    It continues to amaze me the amount of sweat equity required to live the sailing dream. Either you are good or get good real quick on such a variety of skills and problem solving you are toast. Lasting 3 years with nothing but greater aspirations says a lot about both of you.

    I've watched you two or three years, I've learned a lot about working on my boat from you. In fact, I bought my Bristol 40 about a year after I started watching your and other UA-camr sailing adventures. I sailed my beautiful Tranquility to and from Virginia to Florida offshore alone sold her when I got back last year.

    I've enjoyed following you guys for several months now. I appreciate the intricacy and detail required to do what you are doing and the respect you show each other while you slog through the gunk involved in your projects. You seemed a bit defeated in your exasperation statement...we are just buying a little more time. Don't be. No amount of perfectionism in repair will stop the deterioration of all things made. About your last comments on your work on Atticus being a patchwork of barely function systems and buying yourself time... don’t be so hard on yourselves, all boats are like that guys, they’re never done, and it’s always just a matter of time till the next thing needs repair. That said, I think you guys are doing some of the best work ive seen, and doing it right! I’ve been working on boats for 40 yrs and we’re now refitting our third voyaging sailboat our Crealock 37, and I have to say... you guys are really doing your work like true mariners that outfit there boat to be they’re life raft! That’s how we should all approach the work we do on our boats... they’re our life raft! I’m gonna send you guys a tune you might like to play, you have my permission if UA-cam will let you? Peace n Love

    The hull is probably about three inches thick where the two halves were joined there at the bow when the hull was laid up. Take the assembly apart again, grind the frp flat so that your lovely cover plate will lie flush, goop up the parts and put them back together. Also, you could countersink the fastener holes in the cover plate and use flat head fasteners (if you didn't in the first place -- I seem to recall that the first problem was the fastener head deflecting the toggle). Love the shots of the job. Viewer can really see what's going on. Love that boat. Attended a lecture once by Scott and Kitty Kuhner, the first to circumnavigate in a fiberglass boat--an Allied Seawind! Nice folks, great pictures.

    Wanted to give up a heads up with stuffing boxes. When you leave the yard leave stuffing box totally loose. You want water gushing out. Otherwise wax in the stuffing melts and piles up outside of the box. Tighten over a day or so and really let a lot of water in before you set for drip. Also if there is more then one bolt on plate you want to measure and make sure each corner is exactly the same

    My boyfriend and I are currently in the process of saving up to permanently live aboard and cruise and I cannot tell you how many of your videos I've seen!
    At first, I used to watch all of your boat repair videos and end up more confused than I was before I started, but I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of all the language, and also all of the bits and pieces that require regular maintenance and what it takes to get the job done.
    I'm a nurse and my boyfriend is a lawyer by trade, so videos like yours are invaluable learning tools and we really appreciate you guys putting out this content!

    Hey Buds. Good to see Atticus back in the water. Noticed you are still using the key for the motor. A possible option is to change this to a switch, so a think key breaking off isn't a show stopper if needed when the shit hits the fan. Another switch hidden in the locker can be installed inline to prevent unauthorized use. We do this with our twin engine aircraft since keys aren't used.

    stuffing boxes are intended to leak...that's what keeps them cool.. After repacking,...slacken the nut off with engine running til it leaks water, then slowly cinch up til the leak is minimized. with cool running. Always a good idea to use graphite grease on the packing, that way it doesn't groove the shaft..

    I've made this comment several times on various sailing channels.....
    Get yourself a set of COBALT drill bits, it's the minimum requirement for drilling 316L stainless steel, gold colour, laser etched with the following markings HSS C
    the reason you burnt out 3 drill bits is because the stainless got hot and as such became harder than it already was. PS you could have made a plan too with your Bob stay chain plate by slotting the internal holes and countersinking the cover plate holes and using flush mounted countersunk head screws. Generally speaking you've done great work on the boat and should feel very proud of your achievements. God bless, fair winds and safe sailing.
    PPS, with regards your stuffing box, the gland packing will not damage the shaft, and should by all accounts settle down with time and use. You can always add another packing later when you need to, rather have the stuffing box weeping than getting hot, the packing will deteriorate quicker at high temperature and will swell with water ingress, obviously it mustn't be visibly leaking, adding packing while in the water should not be problematic if your packing is prepared and ready to install, make sure to evenly compress the gland packing and measure the distance from the inner casing flange to the outer casing lip.

    We have a few projects we are struggling with to. Just think. The people in US are running around looking for toilet paper, while you are in paradise running around looking for boat parts. Many people wish they had the opportunity. Enjoy the passage...you are out doing it...while others are just watching you do this boat work. Good job fixing up that old sailboat and keeping it all going!! Good music btw! -Rebecca on SV Brick House

    Another great episode guys! A handy piece of kit to have onboard would be a Drill Doctor. I have one and it's pretty slick. You can sharpen up all your drill bits easily so no more trips to the local machine shop!

    U need to use carbide drill bits for stainless steel and keep low rpm during drilling as much as it possible also don’t forget about greasing.
    Use grinder to make old drill bit sharper

  • @globyois
    @globyois 4 роки тому

    Use oil on the drill bit and use the almost slowest speed your drill has. It will actually cut better and preserve your bits.

    Have fun you two. When you hit the "doldrums" out there, just enjoy it without the motor. It took us 3 weeks to go from San Francisco to Hawaii.

    Drilling stainless - Low drill speed, high pressure. Don't let the drill bit rub without cutting or the metal will workharden. Use thick oil, grease or proper cuttting compound, not water :-)

    Just found your channel and really appreciate the effort in describing your technical projects. I am also impressed and grateful for you sharing your mistakes along the way as we all make them and learn much more by arriving at a solution rather than a quick fix and all is well. You both seem to be very patient with each other so congrats for that also. Please try to maintain your your positive approach to your adventures as it is an inspiration to many of us who also face hurdles in our own projects. Wishing you safe and happy sailing times as you continue. Cheers from Australia.

    Next time you haul out, sand the prop then put a few coats of fiberglass resin on it. Keeps the algae & barnacles off for a long time. As a former boatyard worker I’m impressed by your willingness to tackle all the projects you can by yourselves. Stay safe & fair winds & following seas !!

    Stainless steel requires a less steep angle on the drill than for regular steel, and a slower speed and some lube grease on the drill so as the drill warms the lube keeps feeding the cutting edges.

    I'd love to see the outtakes, LOL. I am a great deal older than you both but I am learning so much. Yes about boat work but more about two people, patiently working together on a goal. Great Job. I am getting ready to close on my second, and probably last, boat The Oldest Dolphin 2, cal sign Dolphin 2, a Catalina 30. Following you all make this even more of an adventure. Thanks!

    The material is Stainless Steel and you have work hardened it. Use a Carbide drill or a small grinding wheel to get below the hardened material.

  • @Ohmcrazy2
    @Ohmcrazy2 4 роки тому

    300 series stainless steels (304/316/321 etc.) is very tough material to cut even with proper equipment but especially with hand drill. I've been there also working this stuff with files, twist drills and it aint fun. The reason it's dulling and smoking your bits is due to work hardening. As soon as the bit isn't cutting and only "rubbing" the material your toast. It turns rock hard dulls the cutting edges and all you'll do is spin and create heat. Best way to mitigate this is to start with a sharp bit, use a dab of oil, lots of pressure and low rpms on the drill. The instant it stops cutting a chip STOP. Don't ever let the bit just spin. easier said than done but thats the gist of it. Sending good luck to you guys from Chicago as I'm sitting here in my office surrounded by the plauge! lol.

    Realize just how tall you are when you're carrying the mast ! Lol you dwarfed all the other guys. But love the channel guys. Never sailed ever let alone never been on a boat in a ocean. It's on my bucket list for sure and I'm in love with sailing without ever doing it yet if that's possible! Keep up the amazing job guys!

    Hey, would you mind describing how you secured the mast bases to the deck? I thought I saw you using a large, course grade bolt, like a large wood screw. I imagined what would be required for the mast is using machine-grade through-bolts with nuts and with base-plates on the inside. I am pretty inexperienced in these matters though. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us all.

    Stainless steel work hardens with too much friction - so it might seem counter intuitive, but you actually want to push harder and cut through it quickly rather than take your time. Also, the fewer number of steps up in pre-drilling sizes the better. Once it is already hardened you will eat up drill bits left and right until you bear down on it or put it in a drill press where you have a mechanical advantage to apply enough pressure.

    Your stuffing box and shaft are water cooled. I think you still have some air in there and it's not cooling good. Go motoring with the stuffingbox leaking like a siv to get water all around the shaft, pump out water and tighten again. After that you should have no issues i think

    • @harlandfazardo799

      good to start with the packing gland loose and then tighten slowly with shaft in operation. be patient

    • @hansjensen7823

      Michael Waegemans I was going to suggest the same, an air pocket not allowing water to cool and lubricate the shaft.

      I have to agree with Harland below. You might also consider that you have TOO much packing material. In power stations we generally look to see a drip or two per minute. This ensures that that the packing is lubed and cooled.

      @budsbustbi6339 4 роки тому +2

    Let that stern gland weep a bit until it has had time to settle and absorb water then you can tighten down to minimum weep.

    Advice here guys (I've done it before...): when you drill through a sandwich deck (fibreglass/basalt/fibre glass) you should try to remove a bit of basalt on the sides with a hook, refill the hole with epoxy and then pierce again so that if there is any leak the water does not go in the basalt and rot your deck. (Also better to only seal the outside for the same reason).
    Nice job otherwise :)

    take that bow chain plate out and drill the two holes so they are slotted, drill next to the holes you have already, that will give you more clearance for that fitting and give you room for that cool cover you made...slotted or longated mounting holes Bud...……….
