STORM FORCE @ CAPE HORN [Ep. 108]

  • This is it! These are the conditions we sought to test us. We encounter FORCE 10 48+ knot wind gusts and heavy seas as we sail around Cape Horn to starboard. This is scary sailing, on the edge, and it is not for the faint of heart. You may get seasick. Don't try this at home!
    #sailing #adventure #epic
This is the sailing we know you wanted to see when you subscribed.
You wanted to see if we were tough enough.
You wanted to see if we could make it.
You wanted to see a great adventure and sailing in extreme conditions.
We went looking for these conditions as we felt that choosing a calm weather window to round Cape Horn would be, well, disappointing, not to you, but to us. It would not be the challenge we were looking for.
We wanted to summit the Mt. Everest. Somehow, climbing that mountain on a sunny warm day with no wind and waves felt like selling ourselves short. We wanted huge waves. We wanted gale force winds. We wanted freezing cold temps.
Some may say seeking out these conditions is unsafe, or risky. Those people are not 100% wrong, but we say those people are living in fear. Don't be afraid! To experience true freedom is to live life without fear.
That being said, do not go sailing in these conditions without being well prepared and able to self rescue, do not put your life, your sailboat, and the lives of sea rescue personnel are at risk. We are both very experienced sailors and have sailed countless miles in harsh conditions while racing, solo sailing, and doublehanded sailing to prepare for this type of sailing.
Now enjoy a sailing video that we had lots of fun making. Click subscribe and come along for this awesome rollercoaster ride of an extreme sailing day!

Risky; basically everything and everyone had to perform as planned. But I think J Boats owes you a free boat; or a sponsorship.
Aside from the risks taken, that was a relationship and, well, a how-to-be-a-good-person, skipper, and mate video I will watch again. If I’d seen it 20 years ago, it might have made all the difference. Well done.

Videos always make the wind and sea look less dramatic than it was in person. But 21:30 you can really see how the bow wave is getting atomized to the point it looks like smoke. Amazing.

I don’t know where to start, just wow! Have only recently been watching UA-cam sailing videos, but of all the channels out there you guys are up there for the most exhilarating vlog I’ve seen yet, the smiles and passion you two through at that passage around the horn, was nothing short of an adrenaline fuelled, heart pounding, speeding boat spectacle. When the googles came out I was on the edge of my seat, you where there in the moment relishing all the sea could give. The two of you worked that boat like a Swiss watch, I’d feel so safe on board and in your hands, the luckiest pooch on the high seas, woof woof. Guys that was epic, congratulations 🤩

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! So happy for your achievement! And this "baptism" was under nice conditons: wind and sea making the challenge really worth! Can you believe a friend had to do it motoring because there was no wind and the sea was like a lake? Boring...
As I said many times before, you make a great team! It's a lesson every time I see you sailing and Sweet Ruca is an incredible boat, the way she cuts the water and, at the same time is stable, you chose the right boat! WOW! I could feel how fast she was just before Kate says "15 knots" by watching the water was passing by the hull! Amazing! Seeing how happy you wer was a unique moment also!
Hope now you can enjoy a bit more the Patagonia scenery, wildlife, the caletas, now that you've conquered what you wished for so long. Enjoy the moment to the fullest! And congratulations once more! VERY well done! My best

    Congrats guys...that's a huge achievement.
I've been around Cape Horn too, though I was on the helm of USS Nimitz. We spent 2 weeks tying everything on the ship down. We were expecting seas of up to 60 feet, but got lucky and went right in between storms and seas were around 30 feet. Still, we were frequently taking water over the bow when we rolled I'd see nothing out the bridge window but grey sea in one direction, and nothing but grey sky in the other. I remember explicitly our captain coming on about 24 hours prior and stressing "If you fall overboard, the motor lifeboats are out of the question and the helo is on a 1-hour standby. Your life expectancy at this water temperature is 13 minutes. We will not stop."
I cannot imagine doing it in a small boat.

It is refreshing to watch two competent sailors actually take the wheel who find the wind and the waves exhilarating. . . . What is your LOA, LWL, and theoretical hull speed? You are consistently sailing between 11 and 16 knots with a monohull. How are you getting those speeds? You appear to be exceeding the theoretical hull speed. How are you doing it?

So much respect for you both I had chill bumps just watching the ride. The land lover side cussed Curt for a second, until the sailor brain kicked in & realized Curtis can pull Kate back aboard if she slips tying down the staysail. Kate is amazing, but would would be of little help to Curt in the water. On time cold water racing had to pull a Greek God looking guy back on board, surprised me how quickly he lost strength. 3 place in that race of maybe 100. Just told my daughter only one in 100,000 sailors makes the horn, it might be more. Congratulation's, I share your excitement.

Wow! WOW! That was exciting. Tried to eat my dinner salad while watching this but then realized, I'd forgotten to eat! When you combine able seamanship with a very well prepared vessel, where everything works and works well, these type of 'epic' trips are possible. You are absolutely correct: one must be able to self rescue, have capable crew, a boat that can handle those conditions, and do everything to mitigate risks.
I REALLY enjoyed how you two were able to quickly communicate what immediately needs to be done. Like you, I've also surfed down the waves at over 10 knots at times and it requires extreme coordination and cooperation between the captain and crew. Do it, and do it right now!
    A few sailing comments:
*you reefed early and often! Perfect. I won a race while sailing downwind in a Jason 35 by mastering early reefing and then shaking the reef out as soon as the squall passed.
*you had a gybe that was a bit rough. I learned from a friend that it helps to gybe while surfing down a wave at max speed because it reduces apparent wind speed.
*There were a couple of times someone stood up on the benches in the cockpit to take pics/vids but weren't snapped on. I've done it but...just a thought!
*in those conditions, it's nearly impossible to handle the spaghetti that is your sheets!
*cruisers I know often wrap the tail end of sheets back around the winch a couple of time to that if someone accidentally bumps into the tongue of the self tailing winch, it won't dislodge the sheet while under load.
Nothing but respect, for sure! I'm 65 years young, own a 30' sailboat in southeast Alaska, have sailed from Valdez, AK to Panama during coastal passages as crew, plus thousands of miles of the Inside Passage and have been boating here around Juneau for 33 years now. We sometimes get conditions like you experienced rounding Cape Horn. Think of the Inside Passage like The Strait of Magellan only twice as long!
OK, now I'm impressed! Will certainly hit the subscribe button! Congrats on your rounding!

"We're turning.... gybing..." (the VISUAL and the SOUND) - I watched and listened three or four times. INTENSE!!!! That what the moment... before the climax - "Copy that!...Perfect!" AND then it became more and more incredible! You guys are the BEST! I enjoyed every minute of it. That was awesome! My adrenaline was up... and I felt the boat as if I was on it. Extraordinary job of sailing and capturing the experience on video. Fantastic music BTW. The sign... the hug, and kiss, so special. You came in FIRST! Excellent editing too…and thank you so much for sharing it with us.

What a Bucket List completion success.
Nothing like a knockdown (almost), surfing and having to wrestle a sail in high seas and a 40mph breeze single handed!
Appreciate the footage of Cape Horn, great filming and outstanding editing.
Wishing you three continued Success and a great Voyage.

I heard some thing at minute 29 and 19 seconds to minute 29 and 26 seconds that made me well up with tears, when two people truly in honesty say something to each other that epitomises what it means to one another in all realms of respect, admiration, trust and love is so inspiring that message must be heard by everyone to go out and live their dreams together as one, and if you have have a Roxy 3 is not a crowd.
    Well done, bloody well done.

Just watched you guys live life to the limit. Thank you for sharing that moment and all of your efforts to get there. I could feel your level of excitement was off the chart and am sure when you dropped anchor what a sense of relief that you made it safely. I started sailing last year not realizing what it means to me now as last month I was caught in a storm solo in 8 foot swells and gusting wind on my beam. I sail a Macgregor M so the bottom of the trough was above my ears and there were some crazy currents that made for waves at all angles. At 5 hours in a huge set picked me up and had my first knock down when I broke the helm off at the base holding myself in the cockpit. These are the moments that you either say this is stupid and sell the boat or realize you were able to control your fear and relax to survive the danger. I’ve always enjoyed a good storm as much as a perfect sunset. In sailing you have to understand mechanical, physics, geography, geometry having to put trust on your equipment and how important preparation is to avoid a disaster. In your case sailing is definitely a physical and mental sport and you must have a strong partner to do what you have done so congratulations on living life to the limits and hope you are in for smooth sailing, hot showers , and endless sunsets together ! Peace on earth and ocean , prayers for the people of Maui.
