Yeah that is a strange coincidence. Regarding the casting of Cheryl Ladd, Spelling originally cast her for the role of Nancy in "Family" but ended up selecting Meredith Baxter in the end. Years later when Farrah quit CA, Spelling remembered Cheryl from the "Family" audition and asked her to play Kris.
Also featuring other very familiar character actors of that time period. They were all over the tele and big screen, the ones who you see and say "ohh yeah, that guy"
Saw John Forsythe on some old school Dynasty episodes, and I share the grief of the entire world in his passing, even though it's been ten years. Forsythe was classically trained, silver haired, and ages to sexy perfection, and very grounded in old school values, some of which are outdated, but still I have a lot of love and respect for John, a fine actor and a genuine man. His gorgeous gravel voice even in Michelob ads like this one still warns the heart and challenges the intellect. God bless John!!! Your Dynasty rules forever!
The singer is Marlene VerPlanck who built a great career since the fifties singing with multiple groups, most notably the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. She moved into jingle singing where her sunny voice became the audio signature of this Michelob campaign. She was performing her brand of vocal jazz at venues worldwide pretty much right to the end. Sadly, Marlene VerPlanck passed earlier this week in NJ at the age of 84. She will be missed by all who heard her voice and felt her talent and passion. The title of her 1998 album with her husband, arranger Billy VerPlanck, pretty much was the definition of her life: “I Love To Sing.”
Andrew--thanks for the note on her passing. I just read the news in the NYT. I remember her from her radio show. PS-these old commercials speak to me more than the new ones.
interesting enough, this commercial was set in San Francisco, which is the same city where Ladd 's character Kris Munroe went to the SFPD police academy
I've said it before, but the people enjoying the Michelob seemed more sophisticated and more dressy than those in many other beer commercials. Back then it was called a "premium" beer, a little pricier and supposedly a little better. Anyway, the adds sold me and I drank Michelob and Mich Light as a result.
@jldraw I understand a different actress played Nancy Lawrence in the original six-show limited run of FAMILY in the spring of 1976. When it returned to the schedule later that year was when the part was recast with Meredith (then) Baxter-Birney. Editorial aside--Bridget loves Bernie? Who knew she really preferred Bernice?
Cheryl Ladd is beautiful!
Corny...yet warmly nostalgic.

He was born in New Jersey.
The non-stop cavalcade of cars descending Lombard Street hasn't abated, and, yes, that Ford Pinto is still parked there

That's great information on Marlene VerPlanck. Her clear, distinctive voice fits this commercial perfectly.
Video Games were starting to become popular in 1977.
no mistaken that voice!

Just like downtown, only not as crowded.
What a doll! Pre Charlies Angels. Remember when she was on Happy Days? Richie won a date with her.
Cheers

cool
Can't be sure...but it sounds like Cheryl singing in the commercial as well.
San Francisco full of nice people, clean, looks so fun.
I was there a couple years ago, not true now

Filmed at various tourist venues in San Francisco CA
Also featuring Donnelly Rhodes.
No, that was different guy. Also a character actor. Played a lot of foreign businessmen if i recall correctly.
Greek actor Titos Vandis (Never on Sunday) in the boat.
He was also in an episode of the 1970 version of "The Odd Couple".
Who was that with Cheryl Ladd?
Very nice 70s commercial... crappy beer though.
Boy, commercials were longer and a lot more detailed in the 70s/80s.
