Hi Glitch, thanks for the nice comments! I shot this on a Canon 5DMkii, and yes Ronn is amazing at what he does!
Dunnett has some of THE best drums AND photography in the business! :-)
All of these new components are ingenious! That George Way Tradition Cherry snare drum Ronn has in his hands plays like an absolute dream! I absolutely adore it! Now if I could only get my hands on that Dunnett Supra?!
No question regarding the build quality of this gear but he said he was going to show how to set up the floor tom conversion and well...didn't really get a play by play did we? Certainly I could figure it out but sometimes it is just nice to see it happen. That's what a video is for. A solid visual representation that words often fail to express.
Brilliant designs!
The R4 / R7 should easily retrofit to the Craviotto / Trick hole spacing. And I agree with you - I don't like the look of the Trick strainer on a nice Craviotto.
dunnettclassicdrums Ron will the R4L/R7 fit the hole spacing on my beaded Ludwig snare??
Ronn..You're like the Steve Jobs of drums! LOVE IT!!! ;)
YOU my friend...are a genius.
Thank you.
I just got the R7, and wow. Just wow. I love it! It's on my 14" x 5½" Jeff Ocheltree "Heavy Metals" Carbon Steel snare and it replaced the stock throw-off and it's a HUGE upgrade!
I have one extremely minor complaint though: there's no logo molded into the metal! lol I was kind of looking forward to that tiny little detail! Meh. Oh well. :)
Actually, I have another complaint: the nuts on the bolts were very tight all the way from the end of the bolts to the shell. They weren't on the bolts crooked or anything, but it's that it was a lot of work to thread them all the way to the shell. It would have been much easier if I could have just spun them with my fingers. They did spin very freely on the tips of the bolts though until the outer end of the nut reached those tips. Once that slightly smaller hole reached the tips of the bolts, the nut stopped and required a wrench to turn. It was a nuisance, at least until I finished. This made the task take a LOT longer than it otherwise would have if the nuts would have been able to just spin freely on the bolts all the way to the shell.
Other than that, this throw-off is a thing of beauty. I also put brass-plated die-cast hoops and brass-plated tube lugs (and new chrome-plated tension rods) on this snare to replace the stock parts and now I can't stop looking at it! I could probably look at my snare drum for hours. The R7 gives it that beautiful finishing touch! My snare almost belongs in a display case now, but I'd rather play it. :)
TwoCablesOCN There should be a logo molded into the cover plate.
TwoCables Hi .I want to buy the R7 throw off. Where can I buy it ? Thanks, Greg
TwoCables hi! Will the R7 and R4L replace my P85 throw off on my Ludwig without any modifications?
Im having trouble with my strainer. I recently acquired a stainless steel Dunnett snare. The hole you say at the back to adjust friction doesn’t make sense to me. I feel like the tension knob needs to be secured on the top thread as tight as possible. If not isn’t there a risk of the whole assembly falling apart? There’s plenty of play in the bottom part of the thread.
Im finding it very difficult to get that top knob tight enough.
Also the lever is getting stuck, much like a p85 does
Ronn is GENIUS
Thanks for the speedy response. Sorry to drop another brands name on your threads. I'm only getting a Craviotto because i'm trading one of my Luddy black beauties privately...I was offered a Dunnett titanium but he took a cash sale and decided not to trade.. t
I also tried to order 2 george way's from DC in cologne but there was a huge delay with the shipping... So I ended up buying 3 mint camco oaklawns privately instead (1 a rare chrome over brass 14 x 5).
One day i'll have a Dunnett! :)
Just ordered one of these strainers for my Ludwig Black Galaxy. Tired of the stock Ludwig P85. The lever binds up and the tension on the straps always slips. And you need to carry around a screwdriver to tighten it.
gutbucket did you need any modifications done when you purchased the R4L for your Ludwig?
that's it. getting a throw-off for myself for my birthday.
Very nice. Elegant indeed. I like this.
need a rubber foot option on those conversion kit spurs, i was cringing looking at it on that wood floor. I've certainly taken it for granted that a place (especially a small place like you'd use a small kick at) would have a rug or stage.
RE: The R-Class Rail Mount: You state that you could mount this "...on any bass drum." I like that idea, but It seems that the configuration would have to be a mirror-image version of the one that you offer; especially if you were to use a bass drum hoop mount like DW's, or similar hoop mount.
I welcome your comment.
ctrader6 It seems to work fine for 99% of the applications it is used for. Check out the video of the Bonham set up. It works fine there holding a 10 x 14 tom on a 26" bass drum.
Hi Mr. Dunnett. I would like to purchase the R class triple flange utility clamp but I can't find the mic brackets that would fit into them. Can you help me out?
Hi @dunnettclassicdrums i have two of the R7 throw-offs and both have broken where the housing rotates with the swivel and thus cannot reach the highest setting even with tension completely off. It needs to be manually rotated back but only works while snares stay on, messes up again when snare wires turned on and off.
Very disappointing to now have to replace both pricey strainers with other Dunnett models to avoid drilling holes :(
Can you help?
Does anyone know where the ";+(!; !!! There are some instructions on how to install one of these
Where can I find the threaded rod that was used with the R-clamp to turn it into a mic clamp? Would a short gooseneck fit in the clamp?
how it is the edge on those metal snares? if is 1.5mm steel then the edge is bended inwards or at least rounded or is the sharp metal edge (square)? gorgeous snaresbtw
Hi Ron,
I'm a reaaly big fan! Love your work.
I'm looking into converting my 20" bassdrum to a floortom, would the R Class clamp work for this? Does it fit on a wood hoop?
That conversion kit is ingenious. Will it work with 14" floor toms? Because that's what I have.
Beautiful video! Did you film this on the new Canon?
No, it only fits triple flanged or diecast hoops. The DW Claw Hook should work better for that.
Hello, @dunnettclassicdrums! I actually have a problem with my R4 snare strainer. I love the design and all it's features, also it's super smooth! ... But actually it's a bit too smooth, because quite frequently when I'm playing something louder, the lever actually get's blown to off-position. And no, I don't mean that the tension knob get's loose, the strainer keeps snare tension just fine. I also don't mean the quick release-mechanism, I mean the lever.
So my question is: is there a way to tighten the lever with some basic tools? Or at least I think the problem might be fixed that way, you know your design best.
Has anyone else had a similiar problem with the snares getting blown off, and how did you fix it? At the moment I have to wrap tape around the lever with some tape as a failsafe, but It's really getting on my nerves and I don't consider that a proper solution.
Thanks in advance!
Send me an email - we'll get you fixed up.
Ronn...do the R4 and R7's fit the hole spacings where a Trick throw off has previous been attached to the shell.
I have Craviotto coming this week and I really dislike the Trick throw off they use.
Could I change this for one of your R4 or R7's without any extra drilling or hole plugging (which i do not want to to)
Just got my R4L throw off for my black beauty. What in the world is up with the hardware the R4L comes with--i.e., the nuts and screws. The screws are unnecessarily long and the nuts do not screw on!
The bolts do not screw into the throw off. The bolt HEADS slide into the track on the back of the throw off. The bolts go through the shell and the nuts attach the throw off from inside the shell. You're think that the bolts should thread directly into the throw off and you're looking at nuts that would have no place if the bolts did that. The track system allows the throw off to be mounted at various positions, whereas static position holes and bolts are very limited. If you need help, just email me.
Shot by my pal Tony Chopin - yes, using Canon equipment.
When is the E Key with usb stick in chrome coming available? Would love to buy it!!!
musiqmanie And when is the Red USB key coming available, it would be the perfect mathc for my red rig.
Hi. I want to buy an R7 throw off. Where can I buy it?
Thanks, Greg
Love the music!
badass
Want want want..
Will HAVE HAVE HAVE!!
will you make R7 to fit beaded shells ?
The video shows the R7L for Ludwig beaded shells.
gutbucket the video shows a R4L only
No - won't fit a wood hoop. Try DW's cowbell holder for that.
I have tried speaking with Gator and I will speak directly to them at NAMM. Send me an email.
I was gonna put that on my Supraphonic but it wasn`t that smooth no matters how we tried to adjust it
And what exactly would you try to adjust? I've used the R4L on every 2N snare drum I've made - thousands of them, never had a problem and never had any contact from you regarding any issue you might have had with one.
@@dunnettclassicdrums we just tried in the music store tried to but it sort of "hooked" when we put the strainer on.
@@dunnettclassicdrums maybe we did something wrong but couldn`t figure out what it was.
@@drumsanddrumming Well, it IS rocket science...
SHITTY DESIGN AS FAR AS INSTALLATION GOES!!!!
It can be if you lack the basic skills required to operate hand tools.
