    Thunderhawk is the reason I love M.A.S.K. to this day Rhino was good as a support vehicle, Same for Transformers I've always been a Hot Rod fan and didn't like him that much once he became Rodimus. Hot Rod by the way for the younger viewers is basically Bumblebee but in red and orange and the original Bumblebee was a mini autobot that could only take the body of small cars that's why he was a yellow beetle he could never be a muscle car.

    This and Optimus Prime were instrumental in my decision as a kid to be a truck driver as an adult. I loved that Rhino so much. I never had my own Prime because my parents only bought us Gobots but I loved the cartoons and begged in vain for those toys.

    I was fan of MASK as a kid but only never got the Rhino back then. I finally got my hands on one of these back around the mid 90s brand new condition in the box for about $50. Still have it in excellent condition at my mom's house in NY. I remember watching the Discovery channel show Monster Garage and thought to myself... "holy moly they are building MASK vehicles"!

    Sadly, I was really hard on my toys. So, while I still have Rhino, it is really beat up.
    On the subject of 80s trucks, I do also have Yatming's version of B.J. McKay's Kenworth K-100 Aerodyne with the trailer, and while it's a much less impressive toy, it's in better shape because I didn't "love it to death."

    Interesting mentioning that the eyes are the windows of the soul,because i remember back in the day when the mask show was on how we talked with friends of what kind of power masks used.The show like many other 80s-90s cartoons didn't go to the trouble explaining allot in some points,so we had our own theories for how this worked & that.That was one of the things i liked with the 80s,the mystery involved around a matter in those oldies.So i remember that with a kid talked about how the masks worked and he said to me that it was probably some kind of power from the mind and the eyes of each wearer.I remember an episode on the show that i think sato or gloria was fainted after overusing the power of the mask.Thing that showed that you could not use the power of a mask for more than it should be.

    Had a RHINO when I was a kid, and that was definitely one of the greatest M.A.S.K. toys IMO. I have many fond memories of hours and hours of playing with that massive rig; loved that whole line and thought all those little mask sculpts were really cool. Wish I still had those toys. 😕

    Rhino was the only MASK figure I didn't have, my best friend did though. So I was happy. Whereas everyone else had a bunch of Transformers, GI Joes, etc, I had MASK. I even watched it on TV every morning before school.
    One of the funny parts of the video was you pulled out the flier that came with it. I paused it as said, "had it, had it, had it, didn't have it, had it, had it." Then I unpaused and heard you say "got it, got it, need it, need it, got it", I couldn't stop laughing! :D
    Great video. :)

    Absolutely loved getting this bad boy for my Bday as a kid. Along with a giant chocolate chip cookie cake. Yum
    Unfortunately Rhino didn't get much play time because none of my friends had any Mask toys and I didn't have a bad guy to interact with. Eventually one of my friends got Condor, but we still didn't have a villain and the downsized scale of Mask prevented us from using Star Wars or GI Joe figures with them. Rhino sure looked cool on my bookshelf though. Great review 🙏

    • @MichaelMercy
      @MichaelMercy  6 років тому +2

    Love it! The Rhino was one of those toys I absolutely coveted. Huge, full of features, and absolutely badass looking. Alas, the limited bank account of my parents didn’t afford many of the pricier items.
    100% agree- the Rhino looks like it should’ve been the “star” vehicle in the line. I suspect they went with the Thunderhawk in an uncharacteristically kind move as the more affordable alternative to parents. I only ever had the green motorcycle that turned into the gyrocopter, but man- those were cool toys.

    • @MichaelMercy
      @MichaelMercy  6 років тому +2

      I get the feeling Kenner was a much "kinder" company than the others too. Just from looking at the box and the instructions for some other vehicles, there's really sweet verbiage that you'd never see a big corporation use. It was like a gramma and grandpa were running it. "We really care!" is emblazoned on one of the instruction booklets and they talk about how if there's any issue whatsoever, they want to know about it so they can fix it. Seemed to take real pride in their product, so I can see them wanting kids to be able to afford a cheaper Trakker vehicle. Hasbro on the other hand, made the leader the biggest, most expensive item and said "tough luck!" if you couldn't afford him. :D Rhino's the centrepiece of my MASK collection though, with Matt and Ultra Flash behind the wheel. :D

    • @OldManTheseDays
      @OldManTheseDays 6 років тому +1

      Michael Mercy you know what- that “we really care” thing was real. I wrote them when I was a kid to ask for a replacement green lightsaber for my Jedi Luke action figure and they sent me a huge bag of Star Wars action figure weapons- pretty much every one for every figure- with a note that more or less said “we appreciate our customers”. I don’t think Hasbro would do that- at least not these days.

    i loved my Rhino and boulder hill but the I-Roc was SO bad ass. I always had a big love for the blazer type truck jackhammer too. I used to play with boulder hill with my Joes too. I always preferred MASK to Transformers. Rhino had that awesome pop out grill for pushing stuff out of the way and I used to use Rhino's big fatty rocket/missile as my own little nuke for my GI Joes planes to drop.
    Have you done a review of the GI Joe Mobile Command Center? Thats was the main thing other and the flagg(which was a pipe dream as a boy) but the MCC was big and awesome and more affordable but it just never happened. I was pretty lucky as a kid in that I had Tons of Joes and vehicles like Roliing Thunder, Mean Dog, HAVOC, Rage, Battle Bunker, and so many more as well as Rhino, Thunderhawk, Hurricane, jackhammer, slingshot, condor, etc from mask, all 4 ghostbusters plus ecto-1 and the firehouse(which got used with Joes a lot too), tons of he-man figures with both castle greyskull and snake mountain(if thats the right name), and all the turtles, kc jones, bebop n rocksteady and their big van vehicle. but when it came to Joes I always pined for the Mobile command Center, the Big space shuttle thing and headquarters playset.
    Are you a collector of some of the less popular or shorter lived lines like Visionaries, Silverhawks, or M.u.s.c.l.e men?

What a toy (far superior then the Bolderhill play set in my book). My best memory is of waking up at 5 o'clock boxing day morning and being told off by my parents for making too much noise while playing with my m.a.s.k toys. Thanks for bring back those great memories Michael with your fantastic review.

    Hands down, the coolest toyline and cartoon of the 1980's. I only had Condor, Raven, and Piranha. I wanted Rhino, Firecracker, Hurricane, Gator, Thunderhawk, and Boulder Hill. Yeah, I was a dreamer as a boy 😅😅😅. I would have done a full summer's worth of yard work JUST for Rhino. I begged my parents for Rhino once I was at my friend's down the street. It was his sweet four year old friend that brought Rhino to his house. I wanted even more after he was kind enough to let me play with it.

    Hasbro needs to bring these back in the same scale as the newer GIJOE figures. I'd be buying them so fast, lol.

    Did you ever have a friend with a pool growing up? Yeah, that's nice. I had a friend with every MASK toy made. He had Rino but also Bulldog which was another rig that was blue. And then Venom had an awesome tanker truck that folded out to an armillary cannon and headquarters.

    Back in the day, I would also look at the brochure for hours and thought "need it!" Whenever I look at Rhino. Never happened. Also the brochure wasn't even mine. This is a great nostalgic video. Thanks!

    Only recently discovered your channel. Awesome content. I collect Transformers nowadays. But when I was a kid I had nearly every MASK toy. Rhino being my absolute favourite. Closely followed by JackHammer.

    I'm betting the reason they focused on Thunderhawk more is because they would have had to get special licensing for the IROC and GM probably had a clause in the contract that said it needed to be the focus of the show.
    There was a similar situation in 'Who Frame Roger Rabbit', both Disney and Warner told the studio that if they wanted any of their main characters in the movie, they needed equal time on screen. That's why you get the piano duel of Daffy and Donald and the Bugs and Mickey parachuting scene.

    Another missed opportunity by Kenner could have been a separately sold semi-trailer for the Rhino to pull. It would of been a cash cow. Think about it: it would of added to the size and play value of the already large sized Rhino, and could of included an extra character (or 2), another micro vehicle or dirt bikes for side missions or reconnaissance, and other cool features such as a mask-recharging storage area with an additional mask (or 2) unique to the play set. It could have been the only set where you could get the mask displayed on the wristwatch mask-alarm. Oh yeah, and it could of included a chair for Alex Sector to sit in while the Rhino’s truckin’ down the road at high rates of speed 😂

    My cousin in France had it! It was amazing. We never got MASK in Spain, but my French aunt gave my brother and I Raven, Gator and Jackhammer for Xmas. We were amazed by the quality. It was all about GI Joes, Transformers and Masters of the Universe here in Spain. I kept being a big Joe fan anyways.

    One of my favorite cartoons and toy lines! I was lucky enough to have this bad boy and still have it somewhere in the basement. One of my biggest joys is giving my old toys to my kids.

    Rhino is awesome but I can see why Thunderhawk was the lead vehicle-- can't beat a flying red sports car in the 1980's!! Not to mention Matt Trakker's grey/red suit and mask (Spectrum) were better than Ultra Flash.

    It did majorly suck that they never made a trailer of Rhino. It would have been the perfect opportunity to introduce a mobile command base, or even just a double level car carrier that would allow them to bring 3-4 additional MASK vehicle in since they were having encounters all over the world!

    Thunderhawk was the right choice as the flagship imo. It's badass, even today. A flying car!
    The boss (for lack of a better term) was going 2 be Rhino but was changed during development.
    A. It was seen as too much of a rip off of Prime to be the leader by Kenner executives.
    B. It was too pricey. Thunderhawk was seen as a more affordable gateway to hook kids who would want more.
    But yes Rhino is the still the logo as it was planned to be the leader. Tracker was originally molded as a stereo typical truck driver w/ a hat & vest. The MASK FB fan group has a great interview w/ the lead designer/creator. Rhino was the 1st vehicle they made or at least conceived.
    Great review btw. Very professional.

    Another "Universe" dear to my childhood. I still seek and watch this (And other) cartoons. Miss my toys.
    One "Universe" I have yet to see is; Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. I wonder if this is unknown to you, upcoming, or disregarded...
