RetroBlasting looks back at Kenner's classic M.A.S.K. toys in Part 2 of their M.A.S.K. retrospective.
#RetroBlasting #MASK #Kenner
Big middle fingers to shout factory!!! Up with Retro Blasting!!!!
Irvin Harvey III trork style?
Yeah they separated the first 65 episodes from the last 10 and won't sell the last 10 in America
I loved M.A.S.K. The best part of the show was the team-picking and assembly.
Had to go to music school, while there was "Kimba - the white lion" on TV. I saw only the first 2 -3 episodes and loved it. And MASK is even far better.I feel your pain, Michael.
I had quite a few M.A.S.K. toys as a kid and also had the outfits they used to have where it was a matching sweatshirt with sweatpants that had the M.A.S.K. logo on both.
Mask and Starcom toys were and still are awesome!!!!!
I loved MASK figures. The helmets let you pretend to be any one of them.
Also, the scale was perfect for using them with my Constux sets. They'd sit perfectly wedged into the cockpits of all the stuff my friends and I would build.
Me too
Great video! Good job restoring the "well played" collection. You had commented how the MASK scale was a weak excuse to not want to own it, or to not have wanted it in the 1980s.
Born in '71, my 3¾ toy fascination started with Adventure People, then progressed logically, Star Wars, (Mego offerings Dukes, Buck, BH, ST:TMP, Pocket Heroes, etc,), Tron, Mork, then GI Joe. He-Man, weird stance, weird punching gimmick; Silver Hawks, spring loaded arms and bad articulation; Thundercats, too darn big compared to Thunder Tank; TMNT...I won't even go there!
So, yes, MASK's scale was a huge issue for me; I had over a decade of awesome toys that could all interact, then MASK comes along. It was a very difficult pass for me as the cartoon was excellent.
The funny thing to consider is a lot of larger GI Joe ARAH vehicles were made in close to a 1:25 scale. Dragonfly, Skystriker, VAMP, SHARC, etc, when compared to their comic book size. So, were MASK vehicles also a smaller scale than the figures?? Except T Bob, lol!
It just seems every IP after 84 was intentionally different than 3¾ so it could stand-out, and become its own thing. Oh, BTW, Super Powers and Secret Wars were too gimmicky too.
Thanks again, love your channel!
You know do we even see stuff like this now days? Not that I know of. We dont even have a Saturday morning cartoon spree these days. Kids are in a crap world now compared to su :)
And such wonderful work by you to repair them and love them again. So cool.
That's basically racketeering by Shout Factory. You did the right thing. They don't deserve any money. You Tube recently has really gone off the rails pertaining to the way they handle certain cases and money!!! Love your videos. Keep up the excellent work! Never back down!! Lol
The worst part is this might not even be Shout! Factory's fault. There are companies out there who do claims like this.
I loved m.a.s.k as a kid, had a bunch of the toys including boulder hill. My parents binned the lot around the millennium because it was taking up space in their loft!
I went to my local toy shop in Hull UK for my birthday in 85, I was turning 9. I bought lots of M.A.S.K and also entered a competition to win Rhino truck.
Forward to winter and there was knock at the door on a Sunday (yes Sunday) morning.
My drunk hungover dad was in bed, the house was a dump. No mother around.
I answered the door and was given a large box with my name on it. I was a confused 9 year old.
I opened the wrapping and there was a cornflake serial box around another box. I pulled the cornflake box open and there was Rhino and a letter from Kenner with a M.A.S.K hologram at the top.
Things like this never happened to me, my childhood wasn’t great. Looking back now as a 44 year old it could have possibly been the happiest and most exciting moment of my life.
I was one of those kids who got toys on birthday and Christmas but never any other time.
I loved down a nice street in a village called leven in East Yorkshire. It seemed all the other kids had every toy there was and I had barely anything.
The day I received Rhino I was the happiest kid in the world and for a small moment I was the same as the other kids.
Looking back now these toys are still insanely cool. If I win the lottery I’ll buy them all in immaculate condition.
Great video as well, thanks for putting it up. ✌️
I agree with not overlooking this as a collector. This was probably my favorite toy as a kid, however, we could only afford a few toys. Makes me want to start collecting.
I loved this toy line as a kid, but don't remember much of the cartoon. One of my grips back then was the size, I wanted to play with them with my Joe's, but now looking back I can understand why they were that size. Love your content, thanks!
If we knew as kids most of us the value those will have in the future (talking mostly for the honor having those) we would collect them and stored them even better! And nowadays some of us trying to fill up the gaps with stuff we give, thrown away or break with newer "collectible" thingies that are not even in the slightest comparable with those classic stuff.
I had the "thunderhawk." I got it as a christmas present from my aunt and uncle. Their sons watched MASK, but I never saw the cartoon. So I had no idea what it was, just that it was a car with weapons and stuff. It wasn't until a bit later on I found out what MASK was, and some info about the vehicle I had. Still haven't ever seen the cartoon though.
I recently started re-collecting (I was obsessed with M.A.S.K. as a kid) the line. I managed to get 18 figures, all with masks, for a great deal on ebay, and the gentleman even threw in a complete Condor and some accessories. Now, I'm obsessed again. lol It's just a bit tough on the budget, so I have to go slowly. My whole collection was crushed in a Uhaul move in the 90's, unfortunately.
I wish they would bring this back like they did with other 80's toy lines
M.a.s.k are still the best toy franchise for me. The scale is perfect. The design is top notch. You have transforming vehicles and cool looking masks to boot!
Mask was one of those things I never understood as a kid. Cars that turned into different kinds of cars....
Though when Dino Riders came out, I found it cool to have a handful of figures that were in scale with them.
One of the most mindblowing toy series ever made, at least in my opinion.
As a child, I've always wanted some of the vehicles, and I loved the figures, but unfortunatly I've never had any... Maybe too expensive? I cannot tell, have to ask daddy :)
I was wondering how much would those toys cost on the aftermarket now, I'm quite sure I would pay a lot.
Btw, your effort in bringing back to life that collection, and also other toy (Kenner star wars, gijoe) is so huge..
I highly think of you guys!
Thank you Retroblasting, you make me travel throught time.
My favorite cartoon and toys as a kid. Love your channel sir. Thanks.
+BobSince1981 Thanks for watching!
+RetroBlasting You should check out the late 80's early 90's show The New Adventure Of Speed Racer it had a great toy line!!!!!!!
After seeing the extensive restoration effort, My guess is Michael was more a Tinker than a Collector when he was younger. (Tinker: A Kid who needs to take apart every toy he has to see exactly how it works)
Even if it's a reupload, MASK is always on the top ! Great !
Wow they did amazing work with the little that had been given at the time. I hope by some good fortune super seven or another organization brings M.A.S.K back and makes it in scale to DC classics figure line
Love M.A.S.K.! I never had any as a kid, but my babysitter (Andy) used to bring over a toy box full of them for me to play with! I was such a well-behaved boy!
This hits me right in the feels. I couldn't afford many toys. I only had Condor and the vehicle that the mayhem brothers drove in the racing season.
Great job on refurbishing these toys. You are right. It's no small task. I had the entire collection. MISB including European line and Split Seconds but ended up having to part with them. Love the channel. I know that Ramp Up and Thunderball are being produced on Shapeways if you have the inclination to pay to have them 3d printed and own your own.
I used to love Mask, the detail and moving parts were awesome! I didn't care for the redesign of the mask.
I freakin' love your collection and the fact that you have a Delorian 80s car! :D
Ah my childhood lucky to be around when decent toys where about and decent tv
I heard rumors that they're going to have Scott Trakker in Transformers 5. given that Sqweeks (the new Autobot) is really reminiscent of T-Bob, I wouldn't doubt it.
Good job with the restoration, Mike.
Actually did love their scale. My only problem with it was the number of masks I lost to each character I had, from Matt Tracker's to Brad Turner's. I actually wound up breaking my arm falling out of a tree looking for Matt's mask. I loved my Bulldog.
That was such an awesome cleaning montage.
now they scale perfectly with masterpiece size transformers
Looks like V.E.N.O.M. changed their name to Shrewed Harassers Of Uncouthly Tact.
Wilson Tortosa Kathy McKeon
UA-cam videos of mask
You are the winner.
Loved my M.A.S.K toys
I had most of these. We had a pool table in our basement and left Bolder Hill set up on it for years.
With M.A.S.K. toys, I will always think on my brother.
I love '80 era toys.
Loved this series as a kid, great channel, thanks.
I still have my sticker album from 86 minus one sticker, my friend ripped it out when we were kids, bastard lol
The holes in the second edition were because of legislation. The holes prevent suffocation if a child swallows the item.
That is ridiculous. Just wow. Wow. It never ceases to amaze me how much people screw each other over for the almighty dollar.
Nice to see this one again.
I cleaned out my local KaBee toy stores bargain clearance bin of the complete line of StarCom. I bought everything so I had several of each of the figures and the fighters. I spent a couple hundred, but I had a good after school job. I was 17 and maybe too old to be playing with StarCom space ships in my yard and around the house, but I was a serious collector at the time. I still have the majority of the collection. Some were lost by my younger brothers.
Aye you're makin me cry throwing out all those names from when I was a young teen. Buck Rogers, Clash of the Titans, Tron, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica??? Holy hell its a buffet of my childhood.
+Daehawk Yeah, that shot was a lot of fun to do.
Your swimming lessons comment hits home. I was hell-bent on watching the new "Pac Man" cartoon, as I was obviously neck-deep in Atari at the time and a cartoon of Pac Man just blew my kid-mind to smithereens - but my swimming lesson was always scheduled on Saturdays at the exact time the Pac Man cartoon (it premiered in September of 1982 - probably the best year to be a 7-year-old kid in America, ever, but that's another discussion, heh) was on; I mean, it was insidious. The *exact* time. I mean, who schedules swimming lessons during Saturday Morning Cartoons in 1982?!? lol Didn't they know that magic was in the air? ;-) Long story short, I actually ended up pretending to be sick at least once - just so I could watch the Pac Man cartoon - which, of course, I convinced myself afterwards, had been amazing. lol But the next time I played Pac-Man, it was an enhanced experience, knowing that the little ghost-muncher had a personality...and a hat.
Instant thumbs up for calling out crappy UA-cam royalty pigs.
I never had any of those, but my friends did. They were fun.
FAIR USE FAIR USE FAIR USE FAIR USE. Screw Shout Factory.
i was forced in 85 to take swimming lessons aswell at the local community centers outdoor pool. I was so scared of the high dive. I was 6!
Ok first off great video. Secondly this video has made me hungry for a 3 and 3/4 inch Retroblasting cinematic universe.
Best toy of the 80’s!
I loved Mask. My mother was strangling on apple peel in the kitchen I was the only person in my family that got up to check on her and she gave me $20 as a reward in 1985 and I went to Kmart and I bought the condor motorcycle with that money.
Great review. I can't imagine doing all that restoration. Always tried to buy MASK vehicles in good shape, which pretty cheap when I bought them.
Eh, Racing Series was good. But I don't care for the Split Seconds at all. And you forgot to pop out the tail fin and engines on Manta, heh.
Still sucks we never got Shark!
MASK toys, was undoubtedly cool, I use to play with it.
I'm not sure, you made those swimming lessons sound mighty intriguing...
I took swimming lessons during the mid 1970's. Man From Atlantis was big on TV at that time, so I had a little inspiration.
Screw shout factory!
+andyland27 for real...
+RetroBlasting a nothing company trying picking on an up and coming awesome channel trying to get their name out there. from now on they shall be referred you as the s company that shall not be named.
+andyland27 more like SHIT Factory
+ZachAttack84 😆
+andyland27 And UA-cam! #WTFU
Jesus fuck youtube GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER! I'm not even a content creator but I'm pissed too.
Yep. It's not just us gamers that have to deal with this ridiculousness.
A great review, I don't not recall if I have commented on this video or not, the toy, and cartoon were well done, even if we got saddled with Scott and Tbob... the series remains pretty watchable, and the toys are a stand out, no question... I just had a ransom thought, too bad that Kenner couldn't have produced the Pole position cars with the same style, with Dan and Tess , and maybe a 2 pack of their lil sister,Daisy and kuma... It would have been a short toyline, but doable, imo...
Sorry to hear about the trouble with the rights holder tot he music does this mean they will be going after other videos that use the M.A.S.K. theme? I hope not...
I sure hope Shout! uses that 50 cent towards resurrecting the toy line.
I had a lot of MASK toys as a kid and never lost a helmet. Although I may have lost one of the bombs from Thunderhawk.
+77jarim Sadly I lost both bombs too
You know what's funny that when I think about swimming lessons I think about X-Men and doesn't happen in reverse
I love M.A.S.K.
I think im addicted to this channel now.
Well down RetroBlasting, well done.
Great video!!! Mask what a treat!! Thank you!!!
Just got my first raven and bullet :D love Mask :D
i loved mask i grew up with it too i always watched it and go bots on the usa network
sweet collection
@Shout Factory, just... sad... Michael and Melinda, great work again capturing Plastic Fantastic of a bygone age. M.A.S.K., StarComm and AD&D are my three childhood lines I wish I could go back and save from the donation pile.
just discovered this channel a few months ago. it's awesome. I have a question could you point me in the right direction for a restoration of an early 2000's spring loaded lightsaber? the spring went on it.
Wow. So good!
Love your videos friend! Keep up the good work.😁👍
Reedit to save 50¢! Nice!
I love MASK toys, besides lego, these were the best!
Great article guys. Sorry about the Shout Factory thing but it doesn't seem to have affected the content much. Thanks again!
I used to have Condor, Manta, Rhino, and Switchblade.
F off with the cry factory and thanks for spitting out my drink in the beginning theme waiting for Melinda to say "This is not a toy" then having your voice over instead was great I spit out my drink on the counter thanks again guys
Fabulous video 👏🏽
Oh my god! I had that Robin Hood and Dick Tracy figure. I loved playing with those.
You mentioned the A Team twice. :-)
You and Melinda rock Micheal, you guys ought to review Coleco Portable electronic tabletop games
I think you need to have some dedicated videos on how you fixed your MASK vehicles after the fact including sticker replacement. I'd watch.
I remember back in 1994, when Jim Carrey´s The Mask movie was announced; I was under the idea it was a movie based on this.
I personally thought it was about the movie with Cher, and Jim Carrey would have a weird face.
I have a LOT of these in my attic. I sold the rare ones (the split seconds range)
You could have a sweet MASK and Dino Riders figure fight though!
shout factory is run by V.E.N.O.M agents
computer give me the agent's best suited for this mission
Atleast M.A.S.K toys were compatible with Dino-riders :)
MASK vs. the BattleBeasts; priceless! LMAO
Nicely done!
You know, they could possibly revive a MASK toyline by crossing it over with Transformers. Transforming MASK vehicles that are sort of like pseudo-triple changers. The robot mode is just the third form that's entirely optional. It wouldn't be too out there, hell in the IDW comics, MASK was created specifically to fight Transformers.
Clips are fair use. Unfair copyright claim.
I had the green motorcycle helicopter that was my favorite
I loved Starcom. They are so hard to find now in decent working condition.
I remember the cartoon. It was broadcast in the Netherlands on the former TV channel Fox Kids.
And to be honest, I always thought Starcom was a cartoon from the 90s.
I would love to see a live action movie of MASK,a gull wing door 2018 Z28 Camaro that flies like a plane would be badass
Very nice Video!!can you do some MASK restoration Videos?
Great video. What makes no sense is surely this is free advertising for the shout factory disc they should be paying you. Glad I own the none shout factory UK boxset of this now.
Hey I loved MASK. I’m uploading videos of my collection on my channel too! I love that you appreciated the detail that went into them too
