My dad sold most of his guns and bought a nice barn boat maybe fifteen years ago. Looked almost brand new kept inside and covered but not used in five years. They took the boat out and put in in the garage for the night. The next day the bottom of the garage was full of green slime and water. We took it apart and discovered that mice had lived under the deck for years and peed everywhere causing the hull to "rot" away. Holes freaking everywhere. But didn't appear until he opened up the throttle on the lake and bounced the boat around for a while. Going from an old 1950's evinrude to a 40 hp was a thrill for dad. We tore everything off the boat down to the bare aluminum and took the keel off the middle. We bought some aluminum sheets and shaped the front and riveted it down over the course of many weekends. The front half was done and then we started riveting the easy back half. Giant holes instead of pinholes started appearing and my dad decided the boat would not be safe to use if it was just gonna disentegrate under the new skin. So the boat went to the scrapyard and he kept the trailer, motors and threw out the mouse pee floor. So they bought a brand new boat, we modified the trailer to fit it, put new rollers and pvc slick boards on the bottom for even better slickness. Took the boat out and the front where you tie it up worked its way back while on the road and we had to fix that. So the old johnson motor didn't have the electric tilt installed and my dad had to pull it up and push it down by hand. I wasn't there to see it but he pulled it up, the hatch over the top came off and he pretty much flipped in the boat and nailed my mom. He took it down to a dealership and traded it for a nice used Mercury motor. I will never buy a used boat with a deck or a motor without a warranty.
Solar charge your batteries. $100 at harbor freight. Mount the panels on the roof of the van? Guide poles for the submerged trailer. Straps for rods. You’re killlin’ it bro. You’re the envy of everyone who fishes! You’re living the dream! Maybe when you’re near Las Vegas, NV, we can dangle lines. Great job on everything so far!
I'm impressed, Matt finds a leak in the boat and doesn't cuss. Hope it's an easy fix.The motor purrs like a kitten. The boat build is impressive. I noticed another new item in the background that you didn't talk about, the graphics on the van. From what little I saw of them they look pretty sweet.
You could wire a plug and connector on your trailer to charge the boat batteries with the van. Trailer plugs have a 12v+ feed from the vehicle charging system, you could use that to charge your boat batteries
Could it be a burn through hole up front where the deck braces was welded in? Looks like the water was running down the runner channels on the bottom of the boat... that would make sense as those runners are hollow and if was leaking from the front it would just drain backwards? Idk maybe I’m wrong but worth a check?
Also, if you buy something, avoid harbor freight for most things. Especially if you plan on using the tool a lot. They're ok for certain disposable things, but not heavily used tools.
In the future put high output alternator on the van to charge a battery bank separate along with the starting battery in the van & a large dc to ac converter for charging the boat while on the move. Then that same converter will charge laptops & camera batteries. So you only need to run a generator when you’re stopped for more then a day depending on what size battery bank you make
Everything looks great man.. get the boat patched up and there's nothing but blue skies ahead.. looking forward to tagging along on the journey.. cheers bro..
how did u secure the edges of the deck to the boat? did u weld it? i didn't c a ledge or something attached to the interior perimeter to attach the outer edge of the deck. deck looks really sturdy!
I would either get a battery tender for your boat battery's to mount on your boat while traveling. You should be on the road long enough each trip for a tender unless you are trailering mostly at night. A super small generator hidden in a vented compartment would work good then. Another option is routing some of your vans power through the trailer light connector like a dump trailer to charge your boat battery. Just plug and unplug the boat as needed.
I will never have carpet in a boat.I am putting down the non skid surface in my 1989 Skeeter SD80 flooring where the carpet has started coming up. The front & rear deck carpet is still good but if it starts coming up I will also use the non slip coating on it. It comes in many colors so that is not an issue. You deck will get very hot without some kind of foam over that aluminum desk. I fish barefoot most days & that would be an issue for me. Carpet made no sense to me? Did you fix the leak & if so how?
I haven't been keeping up on your videos so this is the first im hearing of the 50 state tour. That being said, when you get to ND feel free to hit me up. Tons of 40-50" range pike and the countless opportunities for 30-35" walleye. Id love to show you guys around.
I'm guessing you want the ramp that is closest to a major interstate, that would be Balus Creek ramp in the city of Oakwood off of I-985, the launch is at the end of Mountain view road.
U can use the vans altrernator to charge the boat batteries. Us an 8 pin trailor connector and run the power and ground (2 large wired) to ur batteries instead of trailor brakes. Alternator will slowly charge them while driving.
Good idea, you would need a fairly beefy inverter if you want to have any kind of quick charging rate, plus other A/C loads. Big Inverter with Big Wires.
Actually, why not just connect to the vehicles 12vdc system. I'd bet the alternator is plenty big to take on the load of charging the batteries. No 'Onboard Charger" required. Just some pretty good size Black and Red wiring from the truck to the trailer. Connect to the batteries while you're on the road.
Converting to 110V and then back to 12V wastes a lot of energy. You are better to make a charging station in the van tied into the van's system, then just plug the batteries in while driving. In my truck, I use a quickie setup. A cigarette lighter plug to the battery via alligator clips. It's not the fastest, but it's easy and works great And don't pass opportunities to borrow use of a 120V outlet. I often ask if I can plug in at marinas or other places, and they never say no.
There are ways to wire the trucks power system to charge the the batteries right off the alternator as you drive. Kits are out there for this, the Converter system makes to much heat in doing the process and will blow fuses. Have tried this with the factory one that is built in on a Ram 2500. Now may be a bigger one will work, but seams silly when you have a great charging system that has plenty extra power while driving to tap in to on the truck. The generator is to not safe to have running while moving, can tip and start a fire on the carpet easy.
Be. Sure to come to Alabama lake guntersville in North Al on the Tennessee river . Some of the best small mouth fishing in North America. You will love it
You should paint the bottom of the boat with “steelflex 2000” it’s a super hardy coating bonds well to aluminum will resist scratching from rocks and will fill any leaky rivets I used it on my job boat 3 years ago it fixed all my leaks and still have had no problems
I love that SBFISHINGTV decal you have on the back of your van! That'll be a great advertisement as your driving around the country. Let me know when you're down in the West Palm Beach area! I live like 10 minutes away from Lawson haha
Quick question, why not wire your trailer in such a way that your van charges the batteries as you drive? That’s how Camper trailers work they charge off truck. Looks super sharp you guys!!! Way to go I’m sure you’ll fix that leak no worries!
Can always tie into tail lights for on board charger just make sure to fuse it and run with lights on which is always a good practice when towing a trailer

I would try to patch the drain hole, even tho it's supposed to be there those things can bring in water especially when you have that much added weight
if your able to find it and will be driving a lot something like a battery isolator could be used to charge the batteries, itll charge all your batteries using your vehicle and at the same time stop your vehicle battery from getting drained too much.
@@SBFishing Are you allowed to use that for the club tourneys? Are there rules on how much you can build up the Jon Boats or is it just based on boat/engine size?
Lake Gaston got some pretty big Blue catfish. Idk much about Shearon Harris lake, other than the nuclear power plant that's there. I work with a guy that goes fishing there and he said he pulled out a few 4 and 5 pounders on a purple worm.
Do you have an idea approximately when you'll be arriving at Harris lake tomorrow? Just to make sure and judging by the comments, it sound like it, but you mean Harris Lake near Raleigh NC, right? If so, what ramp will you be at?
You need poles on that trailer or your never going to be able to see it when you back it up. It's no problem as long as the boat is on it but when your backing up to load the boat out of the water is a pain in the ass. The van will be even worse unless it has a backup camera that might help.
