  • In this video we link up with Riah and his friends for a birthday spearfishing trip with the goal of spearing enough fish to fry over an open fire on the beach. We teach them some new spearfishing techniques as well as point out some common beginner mistakes and how to fix them. We have a great time and shoot just enough for a sunset fish fry on the beach. Happy Birthday Riah hope you had fun and learned something!

    Some things that definitely need to be stressed to them, before an accident happens, is being aware of where the speargun is pointed and not keeping your finger on the trigger. You could see his finger on the trigger from the surface down, with times it was pointed in your direction at the same time. It's awesome that you're taking time to teach them, just make sure that safety is stressed even more than technique.

    • @freediver_j
      @freediver_j 3 роки тому +7

      Couldnt agree more. Muzzle awareness is something that needs to be engraved as a habit even before you even get in the water because once your in the water your gun is basically floating around so you have to keep your mind on it at all times. Especially when diving in big groups like this!

    • @AlwinBlias-qj7ih
      @AlwinBlias-qj7ih 3 роки тому +3

      Yep! Got sweaty hands watching this video and saying "nope!" in my head every time the spear gun point at people, or finger on the trigger while diving down. Just accident waiting to happen.

      When he was cleaning his mask! I just started going insane because his gun was pointing to Ryan so much.

    • @kadebaitrum7797
      @kadebaitrum7797 3 роки тому +1

      For sure. Agree with everything. The best safety on your speargun is your own finger. Unless your down and literally ready to shoot… finger is off the trigger

    • @corneliusbartholemew6725
      @corneliusbartholemew6725 2 роки тому +2

      @@kadebaitrum7797 The BEST safety on your gun is not your firing hand or trigger finger, it is your control or support hand, because taking physical command of the gun to ensure that its not pointing at anyone is the safest practice. If the gun is pointed at someone and your finger is off of the trigger, you cannot guarantee that the trigger mechanism will not suddenly malfunction or that if the gun is jarred, that the trigger won't activate. You NEVER, EVER, EVER, rely solely on a mechanical safety or trigger device to replace safe handling practices. If the gun is never pointed in an unsafe direction or at a human, then it's impossible for said human to be shot by it. Not the same case when there is a loaded speargun under band tension, pointed at someone while the safety is on and your finger is off the trigger.

    Love it. My son was lucky enough to get some coaching from a very good old school spearo that lives nearby. Same thing, he said get your weight right and slow down, go to the bottom and rest. Makes a massive difference.

      Wear wetsuit, hunt from the bottom, and slowly go down.
      I did follow the two ways to improve my spearfishing skills except wearing a wetsuit because I always wear tight jacket and leggings. Wetsuit are way too expensive and even a second hand wetsuit thou. 😌

    im an average diver i think, from waaaay up north in norway. we dont really have many places with rock that the fish hide under, but we do have kelp. been diving for about 7 years and i learned some stuff here. im alreadyy pretty slow, but think ill try to slow even more down. i just have this thing that if i lay on the bottom for, let's say 2 min and nothing emerges from the kelp. then iv just wasted 2 min dive and then have to spend 6min on the surface. my average dive is about 40sec because i hover and dont take the time

      Just a little drop of baby shampoo smeared around your mask is as good as any commercial mask defogger. A lot of guys use it as wetsuit lube too, so its already part of the dive kit. Works even better if you do it the night before and let it dry then just a quick rinse before you dive. Crystal clear after 3 hours in cold water.
