Aussie, 40 years spearfishing experience. Live in Hawaii - Everything this young man says is true. May I also say, once you lift a fish out of the water on your spear, the sharks leave immediately. Sharks always want your fish, not you. ;) Thank you for providing this information. Well done.
How about white tip reef shark keep following me intersted in me instead my fish on the line of my floatbuoy.... iv got anxiety and so scare man.. im pretty sure he wanted to bite me attack me i kept my distance . The shark 1 meter from my spear 😭. Iv got trauma
Right? Great knowledge. I hate people who pretend sharks are harmless. Of course many are docile with humans, and of course they're not "evil" or something silly like that. But they are hungry predators looking for food. They are "just curious" as some people say, but when their curiosity leads to a bite, it's wise to be careful. And if they think they can safely indulge their curiosity, that's bad news for you.
4:42 Good Explanation! Thank you for sharing that with people. And Yes bull sharks in clear water VS dirty water, very true! Also the tiger charged at you because all your focus was swimming up fast to get air, no eye contact so the tiger saw that and “made its move” and very lucky you looked down at the right moment!!! Great opinions, we need more well rounded minds like yours for sharks!!
Well, this video taught me that my Adriatic/ Ionian/ Aegean sea spearfishing is but a child's play. Worst danger out here is encountering a pissed off moray when you least expect it.
AlphaArcticWolf if ur country/ocean place is child’s play then our sea is some toddler play cause I’ve never caught a fish bigger than my arm and never seen one underwater that’s so huge
Great video! Had my first encounter with a white shark checking me out. Probably did everything wrong. Spearing alone, spearing late in the evening, had some fish on line, swam away in a panic. Glad the water was clear that's for sure!
All the lads down at Adreno seem like really nice and very experienced people. This video was absolutely fantastic and so informative. I don't think he was reading off a script so it really is that much more impressive. Thank you!
The explanation on their behaviour in this video is superb. I have 50yrs experience in the water as a recreational and professional diver, and the only shark that really scares me is the one you cannot see. They are way overrated as a risk factor except in dirty water which scares the crap out of me due to the prevalence of bull sharks in our area. They are aggressive and unpredictable. The Gulf of Carpentaria, the most hostile environment that I’ve ever worked in, is another scary place. There, research diving is a ‘one-person down to the bottom and back into the boat’ exercise. Sharks are (mostly) opportunistic, unlike crocodiles that are ambush predators and just want to eat you. I have studied both and the latter, whilst very cautious, are sneaky and bold and unforgiving. I prefer sharks as they are much more predictable and can generally be scared off. A great explanation of shark psychology that I read was: Vertical = Prey Horizontal = Other Generally it’s on the way up that one gets hassled, i.e. when we = food Taking out the top predators, whether on land or sea, really stuffs up the food chain and causes the herbivores to take over to the detriment of the whole ecosystem. That is one of the reasons why sharks are protected here in Australia, and why wolves have been reintroduced into some American national parks. A few years back we had a young rower in a surf boat competition hit by something in big surf. Being fit he had little fat, and when he drowned he sank and then was carried along the bottom for 20 kms up the coast and into a protected waterway before he floated to the surface. Plenty of sharks along the route and a lot of opportunity for being nibbled on, but no bites. Nope, none. Another reason for them wanting to eat us is that they are hungry, maybe because we are taking their food. Bummer that we are in their environment, and we then play by nature’s rules.
Please don’t poke sharks. It is completely unnecessary and all you have to do is manually redirect them. This man is not educated and needs to learn how to respect the ocean.
Alexandria N. Fall *Dives with sharks once, now a shark behavior expert... I think I’m going to go with Trevor’s advice who is an actual expert with countless aggressive shark encounters and many years of experience. But that’s just me, and I value my limbs. As he said poking the shark does not harm the shark it establishes that you are not an easy prey item.
Alexandria N. Fall lol ok let’s see how well redirecting goes when u see a 10 ft tiger trying to bite you. At that point you’re not worried about the shark because it’s going to be fine a poke won’t hurt it, you’re biggest concern is your own safety
White sharks are one shark that doesnt give a fuck lol If that was a white that charged him instead of the tiger he poked away he would have been killed or a cripple
"shark attacks that are actual attacks are not often recorded as real shark attacks, they're just people who are assumed drowned and missing." Daaaaaaaayum!! I have been watching shark content for decades and you're the very first person to say that. But it DOES make sense.
Awesome clip and great knowledge on sharks! I had a run in with a pointer on one dive, luckily there were three of us close together so it came and had a good close look but eventually must have decided we were a threat, just how you described. On another dive I had a dugong slam into me so hard that it broke my speargun and gave me a big bruise. Respect for the ocean creatures!
El mejor vídeo que he visto sobre cómo comportarte frente a los tiburones, en especial durante la pesca submarina. Buen vídeo y gracias por compartir tu experiencia y conocimiento.
Great work mate ! I was coming into a beach once after spearing on a reef and it was near dusk and a hugest shark in three feet of water passed in front of me, I was totally unaware but he was probabely watching me the whole time spearing just thought he'd let me know who was boss and it wasn't me that's for sure Your video work is great buddy you are the gun.
The dog analogy is great. When I was travelling out east I happened upon a group of “street dogs” that immediately began growling and coming my way. As soon as they did, my fight or flight response kicked in and I ran towards them with my arms straight out to the sides. All 4 dogs immediately went from aggressive to spooked and they scattered!!!
A lot of aggressive predators get spooked when you stare at them directly in the eyes maintaining the eye contact. It's because in nature, a predator fixes his gaze on prey (a prey would run away), therefore if you hold eye contact, you look like a predator out to hunt yourself.
Wanting to give a big thank you from Hawaii for sharing your knowledge and encounters with sharks. Also loved how you ended it with sharing the nature of sharks and how we as humans should respect them

Interesting, I’ve done a little with sharks in the Coral Sea, spearing fish was my go to, to start the Shark Feed in an area we didn’t normally do it! Once they went into frenzy mode, they’d only stop once everything that could possibly be food was gone! By larger I mean silver tipped whalers, I never really saw them up close. Thanks for sharing and live on.

Started spearfishing at the age of 8 in the Florida Keys. Dove alone 95% of the time . Only had problems when other divers (primarily scuba divers) were around and they were toting along strings of bloody fish. I always speared fish.....took them straight to the surface.......then straight to the boat (or shore). Did have a friend lose her leg to a bull shark in 10 foot of murky water. I compare bull sharks to those pesky dogs that chase you down the street while riding your bike etc. You must be vigilant about constantly surveying what's in your vicinity. Robert Manley great read brother, I’ve just begun spearfishing here in Japan but I’m originally from land down under, only here in japan for a couple more months, and after all these shark videos I’m lowkey scared to go spearfishing back in Australia lol
You did a wonderful job of explaining what you experience. I'm a spearfishing expert in Florida . That sounds like normal behavior. Stay safe and enjoy your time in the ocean.
I got, queastion. Yesterday white tip reef shark following me. after got my maori seaperch i save my fish on the line of my floatbuoy . The fish is in the line about 8 meters from floatbouy. Suddenly shark following me very close about 1 meter from my shaft. The shark keep following me, 10 minutes kept my distance from the shark make sure he didnt bite me, he interested my fish instead of me. Im pretty sure he wanted to attack me, i was thinking to poke him but the same way im so scared he will bite or others sharks. Im about 300 meters from the boat later on boat came and get me i drop my gun get in to the boat. Pulled up my line only the head of the fish left. Please give me feedback Thankyou
Is that the Oceanic White Tip? I've heard they can get very aggressive. Was said to be the ones behind the killing of lots of US sailers during the uss indianapolis sinking in 1995.
This is the first intelligent post about shark lately. So many armchair experts that want to convince you that they're misunderstood matron saints, and others claiming that they're cull-worthy demons. This guy, experienced spear fisherman: you're either a threat, or food; simple. I've been on my share of spear fishing trips as a diver, and am a crappy surfer, and have weighed the odds and risks...I do neither any more, especially in "sharky" conditions.
Really great explantions and Videos. I am getting into this sport, cause I sail around the World starting in 2 Month. I was always so afraid just thinking to go into the water. Now I am getting into spearfishing because you took many of my fears away. I will need food and I must relay on fish too. Thanks for all the good you do.
I have been spearfishing about 25 years in the Mediterranean sea.never see n a shark in my life. You can never predict the psycology of a wild animal in my opininion. My sister dives with sharks. I do not want not even to think about it. Thank you so much for sharing.good dives everybody
This is why I'll take spearfishing in Norway anyday over Australia or NZ. Well great video, now I'm off to become the first spearfisher torn to shreds by orcas.
First proper encounter with sharks while spearing, about a week ago, at a reef about 400m out from Port Gregory, west Australia- good experience, they were chilled, we were calm and Balchin groper were getting smashed. I do believe they followed us around for a while, but no problems. Water was a bit murky, but using shark shield- no Bulls or Tigers seen. Not quite sure what species of whaler, but varied in size from 7 to 10 feet.
Hey great video! I was surfing with a friend and all of a sudden we saw these dolphins hovering beneath us. Then some of them jumped straight up in the air and back down and started hovering and looking down again. There were no fish around so they were not looking for food. Some people have said that this was the dolphins trying to protect us from sharks but i would like to hear from the experts! Cheers
dolphin pods will only protect themselves from sharks, generally a shark will not attack a pod because of the threat it faces. This does not mean pods of dolphins keep sharks away though. You can have those dolphins beneath you and a hypothetical shark will still come and check you out.
Well said. I am surfing a few days a week and if I see a shark I make sure I have a go at it if it comes too close. It like telling a stranger to fuck off that usually makes them walk away. Great video
Sharks have been sharing the marine ecosystem with humans and our precursors for millions of years. They know exactly what we are and, as such, the 'mistaken identity' theory of shark attacks is a myth nearly all of the time. They have such finely tuned faculties that they can easily differentiate between humans and pinnipeds. I've dived with White sharks off Guadalupe and can only say that I agree with your theory that you fall into two classes: a competing hunter which poses a potential threat or a prey item. Some might say, "that's impossible" but I think sharks "intuitively know" that spearguns/bang sticks can inflict harm and pointing them at their face/direction. How do Tiger sharks "know" when to arrive at French Frigate Shoals for the Albatross chicks first taking flight? They just "know." Great vid.
"a competing hunter which poses a potential threat or a prey item." i agree, but interestingly, only in some scenarios as far as the potential threat or prey item. It's possible a shark may not charge after you if you're swimming near a boat, even ignoring you at first, for that same reason. The boat may potentially be a floating dead whale, and they see you as another predator on the scene trying to eat it too, and in which case they ignore you, considering you to be an equal predator after food, that food being your boat. That is until they realize its only a boat of course.
@@DontStopBrent You're not a creationist are you? Humans existed for several millions of years, albeit in slightly different forms. I don't know how long they've been aquatic hunters, but I'd guess at least 1 million years.
Only way to really do some damage to a shark when diving is to always carry a bang stick for protection, I would not be spearfishing without one of these pieces of kit, I've noticed in recent years sharks attacks have become more frequent and aggressive towards humans and have become far more Brazen with their behaviour, I've spoken to many of the fisheries and attacks have gone up a lot more then what's typically normal and about 5 months ago there was a shark attack at Sydney which completely mutilated a man killing him on the spot, you can still find the tic-tok video of him getting absolutely destroyed by this great white shark, apparently there wasn't a shark attack for over 60 years at Sydney so that's a really big indicator for a cull, I've spoken to many fishos and commercial diving welders and everyone for the most part are in agreement that sharks are starting to pose a huge problem for people and a call for a cull needs to happen sooner rather than later, it's not only affecting our local fishing industry's but also other industries that rely on the ocean and the danger they pose towards humans have risen experientially in recent years, THE TIME FOR A CULL NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW!.
Unfortunately, Sharks, unlike us, don't have hands and fingers and the best way for them to test whether you are food or not is to bite you... LOL this made me laugh so hard
I saw from the beach in Jeffreys bay a swimmer get eaten by a Great White. What you said about missing person holds true. If we hadnt seen it happen he could have been presumed missing because there was nothing left of him when the shark had finished.

Thoughts on sharkbanz? Surely they’ll be somewhat effective? ... Please give me hope.
Best Shark education video ever!
What’s your thoughts on wearing the Shark shield? Freedom seven? I believe.
Fearless. Aus is on a different level
Please give me feedback
Thankyou
Is that the Oceanic White Tip? I've heard they can get very aggressive. Was said to be the ones behind the killing of lots of US sailers during the uss indianapolis sinking in 1995.
Top content, thanks very much
Australian heart. It’s somethin. I like making myself “harder to eat”. Great video
how do you keep your heart rate down when a tiger or white shark swim by???
the white sharks normally help with that as their eating you.
on a serious note I've never spearfished in my life so I have no idea
This is the first intelligent post about shark lately. So many armchair experts that want to convince you that they're misunderstood matron saints, and others claiming that they're cull-worthy demons. This guy, experienced spear fisherman: you're either a threat, or food; simple. I've been on my share of spear fishing trips as a diver, and am a crappy surfer, and have weighed the odds and risks...I do neither any more, especially in "sharky" conditions.
Gotta love ya man!! Balls of steel!!
One of the best videos ..👍
Really great explantions and Videos. I am getting into this sport, cause I sail around the World starting in 2 Month. I was always so afraid just thinking to go into the water. Now I am getting into spearfishing because you took many of my fears away. I will need food and I must relay on fish too. Thanks for all the good you do.
Great video mate!!!!!!!
Great video bro...excellent tips and advice on staying safe around sharks.✌️
Why don’t u wear a shark shield freedom 7?
Thanks for the advice on the new speargun we purchased from your store Trevor . Great movie too.
Not quite sure what species of whaler, but varied in size from 7 to 10 feet.
probably dusky or bronze whalers.
What’s shark shield?
What do you think about the Sharkbanz and various products?
Waylan Sands shark band is bullshit shark shield on the other hand is the real deal.
Gosh darn dawg! Great footage and great info about the sharks!
Thanks for a very informative and a well-put together video!
Great video... makes perfect sense.
What a great informative video Trevor
great vid mate
When you poked that great white she didn’t even flinch 🤣
“Awlroyt. they some shahks doyn theyah”
Humans: oh well. Nice day on the boat anyway.
These guys : better dive in pairs.
Its not "Doyn theyah" it's "down're"
It rhymes with they're and we're.
Example;
Where are they?
They're down're.
Well said. I am surfing a few days a week and if I see a shark I make sure I have a go at it if it comes too close. It like telling a stranger to fuck off that usually makes them walk away. Great video
This actually makes a lot of sense thank you !
Awesome info, well presented. Thanks m8! Peace from Canada.
"a competing hunter which poses a potential threat or a prey item."
i agree, but interestingly, only in some scenarios as far as the potential threat or prey item. That is until they realize its only a boat of course.
kmkfiction “millions of years”.......you cannot prove that.
@@DontStopBrent You're not a creationist are you? Humans existed for several millions of years, albeit in slightly different forms. I don't know how long they've been aquatic hunters, but I'd guess at least 1 million years.
I think sharks "intuitively know" that spearguns/bang sticks can inflict harm. Yup. Every creature in the sea knows a stinger when they see one
@@veritasetaequitas4310 sharks don’t think boats are dead whales.
so helpful thanks
great informative well presented video.
well done and thanks
Great vid, have had a bit of trouble with sharks recently, especially bulls. Might give the double diver trick a try. Thanks!!!
I’ve always used a power head 12 gauge or 303 for protection and the occasional feed .ld like too know your thoughts on having one on your leg
Thank You very much..I will follow your advices in south african waters after buy a armored gears..
Such a good video mate, good infos!
Cool overview! Thanks for sharing.
great info! Thank you!
Good video, learned a lot
Honestly enjoyed this video alot, can't say I wanna get into the water with a big shark let alone a bunch of them but the information was helpful
A VERY GOOD LESSON THANX
