I purchased a 2010 XTZ1200 about 4 years ago...I fell in love all over again...S10 had 58,000km when I got her and know 114,00km and hasn't missed a beat.
I'm on my second ST. My first was a very basic machine that I rode from southern Indiana to Newfoundland, Canada via 1100 miles of gravel across Quebec and Labrador. As much as I loved the machine that long ride taught me the need for cruise control so when I got home, I ungraded to a 2015 ST ES. Just turned over 45,000 miles on it and it has been flawless. I once thought "Honda", but now I'm sure "Yamaha" is a Japanese word for bulletproof. And just fyi, I've never set mine on sports mode, leave it on touring all the time. Oh yes, its a simple thing but the availability at the US Canadian border to flip the panel from kilometers to miles was wonderful. And I get about 46/47 miles per gallon. A truly great bike.
Agree with all you’ve said here Richard, I had to fit cruise to this earlier model. The 2015 also has another balancer I believe to smooth it out a bit. Only KPH here in Aus but I didn’t realise they had the switch option or maybe that’s only in the later model. Cheers mate.
Best review I've seen on my beloved bike! I've owned my used 2015 SuperTenere ES for 32 months and have traveled about 34,000 miles on it, paved and gravel, solo, and with pillion. I've averaged about 46mpg with an ecu mod for increased power and smoother throttle response. I've replaced the drive hub seal, mode switch, front brake switch, and fork seals. 60,883 on the odometer now, needs nothing. What a fantastic machine! I've ridden countless bikes and have not found one that suits my big self better. I'm 6'4" 250lbs. A custom saddle and bar risers made it fit me perfectly. I'm comfortable for 10 hours a day. *125mph and still pulling hard, I've read (on a closed course in Mexico). This bike has taken me, problem free, around Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia. I can maintain it myself without devaluing it. It prefers Rotella and does fine on regular unleaded. I might replace it someday if a new SuperTenere appears with updated features. Until then, this is my bike!
Great to see you’ve had such a positive experience with your ST, they are a fantastic machine. Perfect for the type of riding you do, fuel efficient, comfortable & stable on the long hauls. Great review. I believe the XTZ is truly one of the most under-appreciated, under-rated and misunderstood bikes out there. I rode nothing but heavy Yamaha v-twin cruisers until I traded my Stratoliner 1900 for a 3 year old 2017 XTZ with only 2700 mi. (4345 km). I could not be happier. I use mine mainly for touring, but it's so great to know that if I run out of pavement I can just keep going. The other thing I really appreciate is how easy this bike is to service. I tried just one oil change on my Strat and gave up, never did it again. The XTZ is simple by comparison. Seems to me the guys that knock the XTZ are trying to ride it like a dirt bike on single tracks and that's just not what these are designed for. I'm a firm believer in the right tool for the job and this bike does all I ask of it and does it well.
@@standupmoto as an update, I just purchased a '24 S10. Enjoying the break-in and excited about getting some of the kits for it, my wallet is not pleased though.

I bought a 2010 XT1200Z two years ago with 40 000 km on the clock.I have done 15 000 kms on it now.A great bike and I love it.Standard services only.A very dependable bike.
Love the Super Tenere! I've gone down the road of switching bikes for this reason and that, going from lightweight dual sports to heavier adv bikes, always trying to find the perfect bike. Eventually, I wised up and came to the conclusion like many others, that THERE IS NO PERFECT bike. But there is a right bike for me... and that's the Super Tenere. I like to go on week-long trips with my brothers every year and that includes plenty of highway to meetup, then the dirt roads and off road, camping... and that kind of all-around stuff is where this bike really shines! For those purposes, it is more than capable and always reliable. And that's enough for me.
I bought my ST new in 2014, I part exchanged a BMW 1200GS as I got fed up with the constant problems with it, still have the ST and have no intention of getting rid of it, totally reliable.
This was the most useful bike review I have seen. Manufacturers should PAY you to review their machines with production quality and narrative this good.

Sadly many reviews I’ve seen see reviewers passing opinion on bikes after spending five minutes riding them, I guess that’s better than nothing but I believe you need to live with the bike/car for at least a week to honestly pass opinion on it. A very relaxed and ultra informative review which arguably raises major questions about the obsession with mega expensive modern hyper tourer ADV bikes. Has anybody ever heard of shaft drive probems with the ST12? (**cough** BMW ...)

Our Stateside Super Tenere's are now 10 years old(Gen 1). And of course I have the first year 012. I concur with your review 💯%. It is without a doubt the Swiss Army knife of Adv bikes. Great stuff and yes I agree with your comments both of the Tenere and your part of the world, was lucky enough to play in sand sand there on a DT400 back in 79. It was for the release of the then new 400 two banger, it was in if I recall correctly the dry lake area? I own the exact same bike 10 years old. I did a everything with it. Even raced it against superbikes on twisty roads. It 8s absolutely magic. A couple of additions on your information. My panniers have inner soft bags. Very handy and beautiful with some leather touches. Air temperature is not actually air but airbox temperature. That is why some people complain about the accuracy. It doesn't show air temperature. Touring mode is good for city or wet riding. Especially when riding in the city. Makew your life easier. I changed everything to Yamaha LED and head light to xenon, plus many extras. I also put a power commander V with wide band O2 system and a full Yoshimura exhaust plus filter. The engine does 123hp at the rear wheel. Very powerful. As I said in the canyons have nothing to afraid against anyone. Of course a committed fast rider with a Superbike eventually will overtake you but for sure it will have hard time. Plus there aren't many like that. I do ride an R1M, just to let you know my level of riding.

@@DJPTEXAS It is a must for the engine ECU but you are right. This issue is for the old model like mine. The newer models are equipped with regular air temperature. I notice that the sensor is the same as my 2022 MT09 SP. I know this because I Tuned the engine and of course I had to take in account engine air temp/air density.
I just bought a 2013 1200, I been riding a Hoda Goldwing for years. I've ridden dirt bikes when I was young. This bike is great for me, I ride it on the road and back country roads and some off road. I think they are a very good bike, good price used, pretty comfortable, simple motorcycle. I love this bike so far.

I bought a tracer 900 and wish I had bought the tenere and I only ride paved roads. I couldn’t care less about the off road capabilities. As far as I can see and what I’ve read it’s a great touring machine.
Hi, yes they make an excellent tourer. Only thing I would say is maybe get a 14 on with cruise, I fitted cruise to this one but it comes std on the later models. Cheers
I have a 2012 ST. I am the 3rd and longest owner. I LOVE this bike, but it hasn't been without flaws. In 2016 it started having surging problems. It would just jet forward on the freeway, then as suddenly slow down. Then it began stalling and running rough. The Yamaha Mechanics pulled their hair out trying to get it to run right. I finally sent a Lemon Law letter to Yamaha demanding money back for a piece of crap. They sent a district mechanic to my shop and he ran a gallon of Yamaha RX through the engine to clean the ethanol crud off the valves and sensors. It ran great after that. I have to put 3/4 oz of the RX into the tank everytime I put ethanol fuel in it. I I try to find the non-E fuel. Then I got a code 19. Seems like all of us got the Code at the same time. Manual says side stand or computer. But there are more sensors in the start up sequence than the side stand. There is the ignition switch, and that turned out to be faulty. Now the ABS is jammed and I'm seeing a Yamahas displaying this problem. and there is NO information on hos to fix this. So I'm taking the thing apart and deep cleaning it. Keep your master cylinders cleaned out. Because if junk by-passes the master cylinder and gets into the ABS, then you have no brakes. I'm certainly learning about electronic monitored bikes. This bike has gobs of low end torque and smooth on the highway. I've taken it on gravel and dirt. I'm 68 and not so agile on dirt as I was in my teens and 20's. But I can still travel most of the places I want to see off-road. I'm not sure any motorcycle is perfect. But I like this bike. And it doesn't have one of those ugly beaks. However, I'm looking at raising the front fender so i wont clog up so bad. I put a protaper handle bar on so I could comfortably stand. and wider, pivot pegs for standing easy. Saddle is next and soft bags. The stock Yamaha panniers are usable, but heavy. And tired of them jumping off when the bike lands wrong.

@@standupmoto Not to my knowledge. The one time I was confronted with a deep, low water crossing on this bike, I turned around. I did a creek crossing that had a rocky bottom on my 1981 Suzuki GS850G Full tour rigged bike. It was a trap crossing I didn't see until I couldn't get out. I got across thanks to my dirt bike experience. I rode that bike through ditches and various places one is not supposed to take that kind of bike. I'm sure this ST is capable of deep water crossings, but not so sure about me at this time of my life. However, if I ever get in a group and they cross one, I'm going in.
l past my test a week ago, buying a 1200 Tenere tomorrow, just retired from working planning on going from Scottish highlands to Norway for a first trip. l had scrambler bikes as a kid back in the 70's offroad. looked a lots of bikes and this one is so well thought out. thanks for the vid wish l stayed in Aussie you seem to have lots of famous off road trips.
Yes plenty of room here in Aus for adventures for sure, glad you enjoyed the video. Take your time getting used to the Tenere, she’s a big bike. Probably not what I would recommend if you’re just getting back into riding to be honest but if you already have experience just spend plenty of hours getting the feel, it can be a monster if you let it. On the other hand it can be just a just like any other big bike if you’re gentle with the right hand. Enjoy your adventures, I’m a bit jealous I’d love to do that ride. cheers.
A very spot on review. You do ride it hard, so did I doing all the hooligan sh*** with the SS crowd while still on the knobies (to their immense surprise), but lately I find und myself in T mode under 4k RPM (to my immense surprise) with 4.7l/100km (ES version with full protection). Basically this is a V8 truck of the motorcycles: rumbles along in dirt at 2-3k, or slides the gravel corners at however fearless you dare. Tons of grunt down low but a is heavy and tiring on the ATV trails (still good for towing DRZs though). Do not even try to man-handle it or it will man-handle you. Very comfy for long distances, though I didnt take it very far - only about 6k km at most. Yamaha panniers, grip heaters and windshield are very very meh. 12v is only 3A, so NO pump. That said AWESOME bike for what it is designed for and a few things it is not designed for. Btw, I find it rides MUCH better with cargo on the seat instead of the panniers (same exact cargo)

I purchased a used 2017 ES model and I can honestly say it’s been the most comfortable bike I’ve owned. It literally does everything a adventure bike is supposed to do. You will not regret it mate 👍👍
Thank you for the vid - made my mind on a 2013 XTZ over a 2018 Triumph Tiger explorer. Current bike is a 2019 Scrambler XE, but it's a chain drive, and I've heard horror stories of one snapping, whipping around and slicing into shoulder blades!
Hi Derek, ouch! I’ve not heard of that but have heard of cracking the crankcase when a chain lets go or locking the rear wheel at the wrong time. Enjoy your ST, they are a great machine & trouble free if you keep good oil in her. Just get used to the bike before you get too spirited, they (like any bike) can bite and turn off that traction control on the dirt, you can just steer these with the back wheel. It certainly gets the adrenaline flowing then just sit back like you’re on a cruiser on the hwy, doesn’t get much better that that. Cheers.
Thank you for a great review. I have had my 15 ST for 6 yrs now and I love the bike. I drool over all these new adventure bikes, and I have ridden most of them and I still keep my Tenere. I really love the reliability of the bike. Change oil, tires, air filter, and ride. And yes it chews up the miles. I got the dirt bikes to tackle the technical stuff.

Outstanding review! Well narrated, filmed, edited, all-of-it. Fantastic job. Just read through the majority of the comments here from other S10 owners and the word RELIABLE/BULLETPROOF/Carefree are rife throughout. While planning a huge Canadian trip this summer through QC/NL/NS from Maryland, I looked for this kind of mile-crushing, comfortable and BULLETPROOF machine to get me safely there and back. Having seen similar comments for months, I found a 2013 with 10k miles from a dealer I trust completely and started my learning curve on a new bike. Comfort, mileage, handling, quirks, etc. Have ridden less than 500 miles on only a few weekends and got stranded with a shot clutch. Apparently the whole clutch pack is done. Lost a month of riding and cost another $1000. Crushingly disappointed as my trip is now cancelled and I'm not sure I can now travel far from home without a constant anxiety of WTF else is going to go tits up.... which is the exact opposite of what everyone says and the riding I want to do. Any comments on whether this is a fluke or if I got the only lemon in the basket of apples?
Gday William, thanks for the kind words re my review but sad to hear you’ve had this issue. Honestly I’ve never heard of this, even with sidecars fitted. I do know a chap here in Aus that had a total clutch failure on his new Africa Twin (new to him, 2 years old) after only a very short time of ownership. As it turned out the previous owner had serviced the bike and put the wrong oil in it, this was creating slip in top gear. Not enough to notice while riding at speed with the wind & road noise but under load in the ranges it was getting hotter and hotter until it failed. Not saying this is what happened in your case but generally the ST is pretty well trouble free, and some of them have been to hell and back. I guess they are starting to get old but looked after they shouldn’t fail, hope this helps.

Hi, yes the Tenere is a great bike for long travel. Maybe get a slightly newer version with the cruise control, this 2010 doesn’t come standard with cruise I fitted it. Cheers

I had the first edition just like the one being filmed. After four years I upgraded to the ZE model as you can see in my profile picture. It's a very underestimated bike that never got the recognition it deserved.

Prefer the Gen1 dash/clocks with the rev counter...bought a 2017 Tracer 900 new,hated the clocks on that,and the next generation are even worse....might have to black out the silver surround though, that would annoy my field of vision! Great, informative video...cheers!

Thanks Jaco glad you enjoyed the video mate, the Tenere is a big bike as a first adventure bike but I’m assuming your coming from larger capacity road bikes. If your used to smaller capacity bikes I’d go with a 650 or similar for a while to get used to this style of bike, you’ll know what’s right for you. Service costs, I do my own servicing but I’d assume the Yam would be in line with most twin cylinder Japanese bikes. This is an older bike and nothing is to hard to do really, as far as oil (motor & diff) they are easy and accessible including the filters (air oil fuel). Brake fluid change is simple, no special tools really, Pop in a set of platinum plugs and they’ll never need doing again. I guess the only tricky one is the valve clearance but if they’ve been done once or twice in there life according to the service records you’ll probably never have to do them. Seriously this is an easy bike to own. hope this helps mate, cheers.

However, with the local prices in South Africa of the Super Tenere compared to 600 to 800 cc bikes, it is a no brainer to go for the larger bike with more features for the same prices as a smaller bike. However, it is a bigger horse ... I do not plan to go off-road straightaway, but i would love to go touring with other riders. But getting very good advice from very experienced and veteran riders is priceless. Thank you again.

Top stuff Steph, keep good fully syn oil in it and change it & the filter every 5000k or 3000 mls (not sure where you are) and it’ll last you a long time. Get used to smiling though, because when you open the tap you just can’t get the smile off your face. Cheers 👍
Not sure I want a used or new one. But one things for sure… I am getting one. I’m trying to hold out to see if there are updates for 2023. But part of me thinks they may cancel it for 2023 in America due to sales…I hope not. I’m not sure if they sell many.
Gday, they are still available in Aus at this stage but not sure about 23. The Euro heavyweights are selling here but I’m not sure about their longevity, the ST has been around a long time and has definitely proved itself to be a reliable long term bike. It’s big, heavy, powerful, fast etc etc.Slowly but surely it all comes together to the extent that you don’t even think about it’s size, there were a lot of maneuvers that unfortunately I couldn’t show on camera but let’s just say this can be a very exiting bike to ride. What a great review. I don't own one but I might after watching this. There's only one thing bothers me and that's the valve service. I do all my own servicing and I know from videos how hard the top end is to access.
Hi Phil glad you enjoyed the video, yes the valve service is a pain but on the positive side after one of these has done 30 k they don’t seem to vary. You pick a crappie riding day and get it done (if it needs doing) .If you ride one be prepared to buy it because you’ll fall in love with it, I came across a guy recently with a 10 model with road tyres on it, he’d had it since new and never been off rd. He just loved the ride so much he used it as a road bike from the beginning. cheers mate.
This is the most honest and comprehensive review of this amazing bike. However, do you recommend it for a new motorcycle rider (and I mean REAL new rider) to learn on and enjoy it?
Hi, no it’s not a beginners motorcycle. This is a bike that you work your way up to after many years of riding and gaining experience on smaller more manageable machines. I would recommend for a new rider starting with a 250 cc and working your way up with larger capacity motorcycles until you eventually get to the point where you are ready for bikes like the one in this review. Taking a riding course is also a great idea, it teaches techniques, safety and helps you decide what type of bike would suit your needs.

I’ve ridden this bike and for me the perfect adventure bike is one on a trailer behind a car until you get to dirt, and make your adventure. Otherwise it’s a Toyota landcruiser for rough terrain
TX for great Video. I am considering buying a 2018 model. I have always had BMW R1200GSA but recently crashed my bike so my neighbor want to sell his Yamaha and I have never even looked at it in this way. Worried that the Yamaha will disappoint but not sure. Tx anyway
Thanks Adrian glad you enjoyed the video, the 2018 model has cruise as std (I had to fit it to the 2010) it also has an updated instrument panel. I would suggest see if your friend will let you have the bike for a couple of hours and do a decent ride to feel the bike, that’s what I did back when I got mine. My GS was a great bike but I just found the Tenere to be a bit more agile for my style of riding in the terrain I ride, we are spoilt for choice nowadays and it’s a reasonable outlay so find the bike that fits and go with it I’d say. Yes Dan we have very similar circumstances & probably unique to yours and my part of the world. Both animals move fast appear from nowhere it seems and have two hundred plus pounds on their side.
Great stuff, you’ll love it. The latest as you already know comes with the cruise std and a few other refinements, I know there are a lot of heavy weight adventure bikes out there . Some with more HP some with more high performance suspension etc etc , however I doubt very much that there are many with the Yamaha longevity & reliability and as easy to live with.Congrats on your purchase.
@@standupmoto thanks mate, I had my heart set on a KTM 1290 super adventure S, but after taking the Super Tenere for an hour test ride, I went back and sat on the KTM & realised it wasn't for me, plus the service costs on the Yamaha are half the price. Keep those reviews coming.
Excellent review from a review perspective. Reaaally well covered. Hopeing to get my tenere in 3 weeks time ater 10 years of klr650 riding. Really looking forward to it. I started riding on the street about two years ago and I started out with a 1972 Honda cb350f and it is a fun bike but me being 6’5 and about 250 pounds I found it was a bit small and very underpowered so I started looking into something a bit bigger so I started looking into other bikes and I’m really a Honda fan so I looked all over at different ones and didn’t find anything that really fit what I was looking for and all of them were expensive so I abandoned the Honda idea and started looking into others and found the tenere 700 and started searching for them locally and accidentally found the super tenere and instantly fell in love because they were all about $2000 less than the 700 so I ended up finding a 2012 in black with a bunch of add on and low mileage and I’m pretty sure 99% of those miles are just street miles so I bought it and instantly fell in love
I can understand your love affair with the ST, it’s one of those motorcycles that just feels right. Enjoy your ride, keep good oil in it and it’ll last for many years. Thanks for the comment, cheers.
Yes it’s been a while for sure, the later versions have cruise & an additional counter balancer , more nowadays dash but very little else. I have heard a 1250 complete new version is in the wind for 2023, supposedly looking like a big brother to the 700.

The Tenere is a whole new experience in long distance travel, it eats up the miles with ease and seems to get a lot of attention from other adventure riders . You just can’t wait to get back on and ride further, also long steep inclines & head wind issues are a thing of the past with the ST. It doesn’t matter how loaded you are , 1 or 2 up it just blasts past. Try to get yourself a couple of hours on one if you can before you commit but be prepared to fall in love. cheers
I may have to try to find one to test ride. I have a GW for 2up and enjoy the KLR for sgl gravel travel, motocamping and getting to my fave fishing spots with the occasional 2up ride. But I could see the ST doing all of that and still take on some decent 2up hwy riding trips with some considerable comfort. 🤔
Exceptional review....im in the market for an addition to the stable. Have a bmw k1600b but now want a more adventure type bike. Torn between a gsa...and new 2022 triumph tiger. But sheesh.....I keep coming back to this bike!!!!! Give me a reason to strike it off my list??? What a nice bike!!!!!!
You Sir have a problem, first world one I might add but still a problem. All 3 you have on your list are great bikes with a similar purpose, so let’s break it down. The GSA is a wonderful bike with more features than you can throw a stick at (Aussie saying) also stylish classy purposeful with heaps of grunt , I have an old RT at the moment and previously had an early GS so I do like my Beemers . The Tiger is a good mount also, well featured (a bit down on fuel capacity by memory) and that triple is just so sweet and I owned a Bonnie and loved it, I have a triple in my Spyder and it’s just such a sweet motor . And last but not least the mighty Tenere which you’ve seen my review so I probably don’t need to say anymore, all of these bikes have cruise and are made for a purpose. Something to take on board though is they are all tall & heavy as is of course your K1600 but on that you have reverse ( Gods gift to heavy motorcycles) . If I had to narrow it down it would be between the GSA & the mighty Tenere because of their longevity and availability of accessories etc but after that your on your own I’m afraid, I’d love to hear which way you go. Iv only ridden the 21 we haven’t seen the 22 Downunder yet, is the 22 a Thai built machine? Not that it probably matters nowadays with things being built all over the world, it’s just that I’ve had such a good run over the years with Japanese & German built bikes with reliability and accessories that I tend to lean towards them.

I purchased a 2010 XTZ1200 about 4 years ago...I fell in love all over again...S10 had 58,000km when I got her and know 114,00km and hasn't missed a beat.

I'm on my second ST. My first was a very basic machine that I rode from southern Indiana to Newfoundland, Canada via 1100 miles of gravel across Quebec and Labrador. As much as I loved the machine that long ride taught me the need for cruise control so when I got home, I ungraded to a 2015 ST ES. Just turned over 45,000 miles on it and it has been flawless. I once thought "Honda", but now I'm sure "Yamaha" is a Japanese word for bulletproof. And just fyi, I've never set mine on sports mode, leave it on touring all the time. Oh yes, its a simple thing but the availability at the US Canadian border to flip the panel from kilometers to miles was wonderful. And I get about 46/47 miles per gallon. A truly great bike.
Agree with all you’ve said here Richard, I had to fit cruise to this earlier model. The 2015 also has another balancer I believe to smooth it out a bit. Only KPH here in Aus but I didn’t realise they had the switch option or maybe that’s only in the later model. Cheers mate.
Best review I've seen on my beloved bike! I've owned my used 2015 SuperTenere ES for 32 months and have traveled about 34,000 miles on it, paved and gravel, solo, and with pillion. I've averaged about 46mpg with an ecu mod for increased power and smoother throttle response. I've replaced the drive hub seal, mode switch, front brake switch, and fork seals. 60,883 on the odometer now, needs nothing. What a fantastic machine! I've ridden countless bikes and have not found one that suits my big self better. I'm 6'4" 250lbs. A custom saddle and bar risers made it fit me perfectly. I'm comfortable for 10 hours a day. *125mph and still pulling hard, I've read (on a closed course in Mexico).
This bike has taken me, problem free, around Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia. I can maintain it myself without devaluing it. It prefers Rotella and does fine on regular unleaded. I might replace it someday if a new SuperTenere appears with updated features. Until then, this is my bike!
Great to see you’ve had such a positive experience with your ST, they are a fantastic machine. Perfect for the type of riding you do, fuel efficient, comfortable & stable on the long hauls. Great review. I believe the XTZ is truly one of the most under-appreciated, under-rated and misunderstood bikes out there. I rode nothing but heavy Yamaha v-twin cruisers until I traded my Stratoliner 1900 for a 3 year old 2017 XTZ with only 2700 mi. (4345 km). I could not be happier. I use mine mainly for touring, but it's so great to know that if I run out of pavement I can just keep going. The other thing I really appreciate is how easy this bike is to service. I tried just one oil change on my Strat and gave up, never did it again. The XTZ is simple by comparison. Seems to me the guys that knock the XTZ are trying to ride it like a dirt bike on single tracks and that's just not what these are designed for. I'm a firm believer in the right tool for the job and this bike does all I ask of it and does it well.

Yeah it’s a great bike, even the valve adjustment isn’t to hard. The ABS by pass mod is my favorite thing I did to it.

Love the Super Tenere! I've gone down the road of switching bikes for this reason and that, going from lightweight dual sports to heavier adv bikes, always trying to find the perfect bike. Eventually, I wised up and came to the conclusion like many others, that THERE IS NO PERFECT bike. But there is a right bike for me... and that's the Super Tenere. I like to go on week-long trips with my brothers every year and that includes plenty of highway to meetup, then the dirt roads and off road, camping... and that kind of all-around stuff is where this bike really shines!
For those purposes, it is more than capable and always reliable.
And that's enough for me.

I bought my ST new in 2014, I part exchanged a BMW 1200GS as I got fed up with the constant problems with it, still have the ST and have no intention of getting rid of it, totally reliable.
Similar situation here, I had the GS then the Tenere. Reliability was a factor in my decision making also, the ST has never faulted.
After 3 years and 55000 km I can say this an exzellent and reliable bike to ride. Even sporty. Cornering easyli

Sadly many reviews I’ve seen see reviewers passing opinion on bikes after spending five minutes riding them, I guess that’s better than nothing but I believe you need to live with the bike/car for at least a week to honestly pass opinion on it. Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review and yes the new generation of adventure bikes are extremely expensive. I guess only time will tell re their longevity, not to mention the array of electronics on them nowadays.
Our Stateside Super Tenere's are now 10 years old(Gen 1). And of course I have the first year 012. I concur with your review 💯%. It is without a doubt the Swiss Army knife of Adv bikes. And Bang💥for the buck rock solid. Being a Yamaha fan boy, I couldn't be happier with my Big Blue Beast.

It was for the release of the then new 400 two banger, it was in if I recall correctly the dry lake area? I own the exact same bike 10 years old. I did a everything with it. Even raced it against superbikes on twisty roads. It 8s absolutely magic.
A couple of additions on your information. My panniers have inner soft bags. Very handy and beautiful with some leather touches. Air temperature is not actually air but airbox temperature. That is why some people complain about the accuracy. It doesn't show air temperature. Touring mode is good for city or wet riding. Especially when riding in the city. Makew your life easier.
I changed everything to Yamaha LED and head light to xenon, plus many extras. I also put a power commander V with wide band O2 system and a full Yoshimura exhaust plus filter. The engine does 123hp at the rear wheel. Very powerful. As I said in the canyons have nothing to afraid against anyone. Of course a committed fast rider with a Superbike eventually will overtake you but for sure it will have hard time. Plus there aren't many like that. I do ride an R1M, just to let you know my level of riding.

@@DJPTEXAS It is a must for the engine ECU but you are right. This issue is for the old model like mine. The newer models are equipped with regular air temperature. I notice that the sensor is the same as my 2022 MT09 SP. I know this because I Tuned the engine and of course I had to take in account engine air temp/air density.

I just bought a 2013 1200, I been riding a Hoda Goldwing for years. I've ridden dirt bikes when I was young. This bike is great for me, I ride it on the road and back country roads and some off road. I think they are a very good bike, good price used, pretty comfortable, simple motorcycle. I love this bike so far.

I bought a tracer 900 and wish I had bought the tenere and I only ride paved roads. I couldn’t care less about the off road capabilities. As far as I can see and what I’ve read it’s a great touring machine.
Hi, yes they make an excellent tourer. Only thing I would say is maybe get a 14 on with cruise, I fitted cruise to this one but it comes std on the later models. Cheers

I have a 2012 ST. I am the 3rd and longest owner. I LOVE this bike, but it hasn't been without flaws. In 2016 it started having surging problems. It would just jet forward on the freeway, then as suddenly slow down. Then it began stalling and running rough. The Yamaha Mechanics pulled their hair out trying to get it to run right. I finally sent a Lemon Law letter to Yamaha demanding money back for a piece of crap. They sent a district mechanic to my shop and he ran a gallon of Yamaha RX through the engine to clean the ethanol crud off the valves and sensors. It ran great after that. I have to put 3/4 oz of the RX into the tank everytime I put ethanol fuel in it. I I try to find the non-E fuel. Then I got a code 19. Seems like all of us got the Code at the same time. Manual says side stand or computer. But there are more sensors in the start up sequence than the side stand. There is the ignition switch, and that turned out to be faulty. Now the ABS is jammed and I'm seeing a Yamahas displaying this problem. and there is NO information on hos to fix this. So I'm taking the thing apart and deep cleaning it. Keep your master cylinders cleaned out. Because if junk by-passes the master cylinder and gets into the ABS, then you have no brakes. I'm certainly learning about electronic monitored bikes. This bike has gobs of low end torque and smooth on the highway. I've taken it on gravel and dirt. I'm 68 and not so agile on dirt as I was in my teens and 20's. But I can still travel most of the places I want to see off-road. I'm not sure any motorcycle is perfect. But I like this bike. And it doesn't have one of those ugly beaks. However, I'm looking at raising the front fender so i wont clog up so bad. I put a protaper handle bar on so I could comfortably stand. and wider, pivot pegs for standing easy. Saddle is next and soft bags. The stock Yamaha panniers are usable, but heavy. And tired of them jumping off when the bike lands wrong.

@@standupmoto Not to my knowledge. The one time I was confronted with a deep, low water crossing on this bike, I turned around. I did a creek crossing that had a rocky bottom on my 1981 Suzuki GS850G Full tour rigged bike. It was a trap crossing I didn't see until I couldn't get out. I got across thanks to my dirt bike experience. I rode that bike through ditches and various places one is not supposed to take that kind of bike. I'm sure this ST is capable of deep water crossings, but not so sure about me at this time of my life. However, if I ever get in a group and they cross one, I'm going in.

l past my test a week ago, buying a 1200 Tenere tomorrow, just retired from working planning on going from Scottish highlands to Norway for a first trip. l had scrambler bikes as a kid back in the 70's offroad. looked a lots of bikes and this one is so well thought out. thanks for the vid wish l stayed in Aussie you seem to have lots of famous off road trips.
Yes plenty of room here in Aus for adventures for sure, glad you enjoyed the video. Take your time getting used to the Tenere, she’s a big bike. Probably not what I would recommend if you’re just getting back into riding to be honest but if you already have experience just spend plenty of hours getting the feel, it can be a monster if you let it. On the other hand it can be just a just like any other big bike if you’re gentle with the right hand. Enjoy your adventures, I’m a bit jealous I’d love to do that ride. cheers.
A very spot on review. You do ride it hard, so did I doing all the hooligan sh*** with the SS crowd while still on the knobies (to their immense surprise), but lately I find und myself in T mode under 4k RPM (to my immense surprise) with 4.7l/100km (ES version with full protection). Basically this is a V8 truck of the motorcycles: rumbles along in dirt at 2-3k, or slides the gravel corners at however fearless you dare. Tons of grunt down low but a is heavy and tiring on the ATV trails (still good for towing DRZs though). Do not even try to man-handle it or it will man-handle you.
Very comfy for long distances, though I didnt take it very far - only about 6k km at most.
Yamaha panniers, grip heaters and windshield are very very meh. 12v is only 3A, so NO pump. That said AWESOME bike for what it is designed for and a few things it is not designed for.
Btw, I find it rides MUCH better with cargo on the seat instead of the panniers (same exact cargo)

This is an outstanding video and you’ve convinced me to buy a Super Tenere instead of a Triumph Tiger. I can’t believe how great the paint looks after 10 years in the Australian sunshine.
I purchased a used 2017 ES model and I can honestly say it’s been the most comfortable bike I’ve owned. It literally does everything a adventure bike is supposed to do. You will not regret it mate 👍👍

Current bike is a 2019 Scrambler XE, but it's a chain drive, and I've heard horror stories of one snapping, whipping around and slicing into shoulder blades!
Hi Derek, ouch! I’ve not heard of that but have heard of cracking the crankcase when a chain lets go or locking the rear wheel at the wrong time. Enjoy your ST, they are a great machine & trouble free if you keep good oil in her. Just get used to the bike before you get too spirited, they (like any bike) can bite and turn off that traction control on the dirt, you can just steer these with the back wheel. It certainly gets the adrenaline flowing then just sit back like you’re on a cruiser on the hwy, doesn’t get much better that that. Cheers.
Thank you for a great review. I have had my 15 ST for 6 yrs now and I love the bike. I drool over all these new adventure bikes, and I have ridden most of them and I still keep my Tenere. I really love the reliability of the bike. Change oil, tires, air filter, and ride. And yes it chews up the miles. I got the dirt bikes to tackle the technical stuff.

Just read through the majority of the comments here from other S10 owners and the word RELIABLE/BULLETPROOF/Carefree are rife throughout.
While planning a huge Canadian trip this summer through QC/NL/NS from Maryland, I looked for this kind of mile-crushing, comfortable and BULLETPROOF machine to get me safely there and back. Having seen similar comments for months, I found a 2013 with 10k miles from a dealer I trust completely and started my learning curve on a new bike. Comfort, mileage, handling, quirks, etc. Have ridden less than 500 miles on only a few weekends and got stranded with a shot clutch. Apparently the whole clutch pack is done. Lost a month of riding and cost another $1000.
Crushingly disappointed as my trip is now cancelled and I'm not sure I can now travel far from home without a constant anxiety of WTF else is going to go tits up....
which is the exact opposite of what everyone says and the riding I want to do.
Any comments on whether this is a fluke or if I got the only lemon in the basket of apples?
Gday William, thanks for the kind words re my review but sad to hear you’ve had this issue. Honestly I’ve never heard of this, even with sidecars fitted. I do know a chap here in Aus that had a total clutch failure on his new Africa Twin (new to him, 2 years old) after only a very short time of ownership. As it turned out the previous owner had serviced the bike and put the wrong oil in it, this was creating slip in top gear. Not enough to notice while riding at speed with the wind & road noise but under load in the ranges it was getting hotter and hotter until it failed. Not saying this is what happened in your case but generally the ST is pretty well trouble free, and some of them have been to hell and back. I guess they are starting to get old but looked after they shouldn’t fail, hope this helps.
Wear a tear part...especially if the previous owner was a complete mong...can happen with any bike...sounds like motorcycles aren't for you?

Hi, yes the Tenere is a great bike for long travel. Maybe get a slightly newer version with the cruise control, this 2010 doesn’t come standard with cruise I fitted it. Cheers

Also had 4 DRs and loved them never let me down but geeeees the seat sucks on the Suzi, glad you enjoyed the video. I had the first edition just like the one being filmed. After four years I upgraded to the ZE model as you can see in my profile picture. It's a very underestimated bike that never got the recognition it deserved.

As someone who has experience with both models, do you think the ZE is really a necessary upgrade from the first edition? Did you have a lot of negative experiences with the first edition?
Yamaha really need to get their stuff together and bring this bike back with new chassis for reduced weight, revised engine with bit more power.

Prefer the Gen1 dash/clocks with the rev counter...bought a 2017 Tracer 900 new,hated the clocks on that,and the next generation are even worse....might have to black out the silver surround though, that would annoy my field of vision! Great, informative video...cheers!

Thanks Jaco glad you enjoyed the video mate, the Tenere is a big bike as a first adventure bike but I’m assuming your coming from larger capacity road bikes. If your used to smaller capacity bikes I’d go with a 650 or similar for a while to get used to this style of bike, you’ll know what’s right for you. Service costs, I do my own servicing but I’d assume the Yam would be in line with most twin cylinder Japanese bikes. This is an older bike and nothing is to hard to do really, as far as oil (motor & diff) they are easy and accessible including the filters (air oil fuel). Brake fluid change is simple, no special tools really, Pop in a set of platinum plugs and they’ll never need doing again. I guess the only tricky one is the valve clearance but if they’ve been done once or twice in there life according to the service records you’ll probably never have to do them. Seriously this is an easy bike to own. hope this helps mate, cheers.

However, with the local prices in South Africa of the Super Tenere compared to 600 to 800 cc bikes, it is a no brainer to go for the larger bike with more features for the same prices as a smaller bike.
However, it is a bigger horse ...
I do not plan to go off-road straightaway, but i would love to go touring with other riders. But getting very good advice from very experienced and veteran riders is priceless.

Not sure I want a used or new one. But one things for sure… I am getting one. I’m trying to hold out to see if there are updates for 2023. But part of me thinks they may cancel it for 2023 in America due to sales…I hope not. I’m not sure if they sell many.
Gday, they are still available in Aus at this stage but not sure about 23. The Euro heavyweights are selling here but I’m not sure about their longevity, the ST has been around a long time and has definitely proved itself to be a reliable long term bike. They also hold their used prices well if you decide it’s too much bike for you, good luck with your decision. Cheers ps (they’re also a weapon to ride)

It’s big, heavy, powerful, fast etc etc.Slowly but surely it all comes together to the extent that you don’t even think about it’s size, there were a lot of maneuvers that unfortunately I couldn’t show on camera but let’s just say this can be a very exiting bike to ride. What a great review. I don't own one but I might after watching this. There's only one thing bothers me and that's the valve service. I do all my own servicing and I know from videos how hard the top end is to access.
Hi Phil glad you enjoyed the video, yes the valve service is a pain but on the positive side after one of these has done 30 k they don’t seem to vary. You pick a crappie riding day and get it done (if it needs doing) .If you ride one be prepared to buy it because you’ll fall in love with it, I came across a guy recently with a 10 model with road tyres on it, he’d had it since new and never been off rd. He just loved the ride so much he used it as a road bike from the beginning. cheers mate.

This is the most honest and comprehensive review of this amazing bike. However, do you recommend it for a new motorcycle rider (and I mean REAL new rider) to learn on and enjoy it?
Hi, no it’s not a beginners motorcycle. This is a bike that you work your way up to after many years of riding and gaining experience on smaller more manageable machines. I would recommend for a new rider starting with a 250 cc and working your way up with larger capacity motorcycles until you eventually get to the point where you are ready for bikes like the one in this review. Taking a riding course is also a great idea, it teaches techniques, safety and helps you decide what type of bike would suit your needs.

Thanks mate glad you enjoyed the video, they are a great mount for the outlay. Try to get one with the electronic cruise if your doing long hauls, they are very comfortable at high speeds but the problem is you tend to get higher & higher without realizing it then ‘🚓 ‘ . Cheers.

I’ve ridden this bike and for me the perfect adventure bike is one on a trailer behind a car until you get to dirt, and make your adventure. Otherwise it’s a Toyota landcruiser for rough terrain
TX for great Video. I am considering buying a 2018 model. I have always had BMW R1200GSA but recently crashed my bike so my neighbor want to sell his Yamaha and I have never even looked at it in this way. Worried that the Yamaha will disappoint but not sure. Tx anyway
Thanks Adrian glad you enjoyed the video, the 2018 model has cruise as std (I had to fit it to the 2010) it also has an updated instrument panel. I would suggest see if your friend will let you have the bike for a couple of hours and do a decent ride to feel the bike, that’s what I did back when I got mine. My GS was a great bike but I just found the Tenere to be a bit more agile for my style of riding in the terrain I ride, we are spoilt for choice nowadays and it’s a reasonable outlay so find the bike that fits and go with it I’d say. Yes Dan we have very similar circumstances & probably unique to yours and my part of the world. Both animals move fast appear from nowhere it seems and have two hundred plus pounds on their side.

Great stuff, you’ll love it. The latest as you already know comes with the cruise std and a few other refinements, I know there are a lot of heavy weight adventure bikes out there . Some with more HP some with more high performance suspension etc etc , however I doubt very much that there are many with the Yamaha longevity & reliability and as easy to live with.Congrats on your purchase.
@@standupmoto thanks mate, I had my heart set on a KTM 1290 super adventure S, but after taking the Super Tenere for an hour test ride, I went back and sat on the KTM & realised it wasn't for me, plus the service costs on the Yamaha are half the price. Keep those reviews coming.

I started riding on the street about two years ago and I started out with a 1972 Honda cb350f and it is a fun bike but me being 6’5 and about 250 pounds I found it was a bit small and very underpowered so I started looking into something a bit bigger so I started looking into other bikes and I’m really a Honda fan so I looked all over at different ones and didn’t find anything that really fit what I was looking for and all of them were expensive so I abandoned the Honda idea and started looking into others and found the tenere 700 and started searching for them locally and accidentally found the super tenere and instantly fell in love because they were all about $2000 less than the 700 so I ended up finding a 2012 in black with a bunch of add on and low mileage and I’m pretty sure 99% of those miles are just street miles so I bought it and instantly fell in love
I can understand your love affair with the ST, it’s one of those motorcycles that just feels right. Enjoy your ride, keep good oil in it and it’ll last for many years. Thanks for the comment, cheers.

Yes it’s been a while for sure, the later versions have cruise & an additional counter balancer , more nowadays dash but very little else. I have heard a 1250 complete new version is in the wind for 2023, supposedly looking like a big brother to the 700.

The Tenere is a whole new experience in long distance travel, it eats up the miles with ease and seems to get a lot of attention from other adventure riders . You just can’t wait to get back on and ride further, also long steep inclines & head wind issues are a thing of the past with the ST. It doesn’t matter how loaded you are , 1 or 2 up it just blasts past. Try to get yourself a couple of hours on one if you can before you commit but be prepared to fall in love. cheers
I may have to try to find one to test ride. I have a GW for 2up and enjoy the KLR for sgl gravel travel, motocamping and getting to my fave fishing spots with the occasional 2up ride. But I could see the ST doing all of that and still take on some decent 2up hwy riding trips with some considerable comfort. 🤔
Exceptional review....im in the market for an addition to the stable. Have a bmw k1600b but now want a more adventure type bike. Torn between a gsa...and new 2022 triumph tiger. But sheesh.....I keep coming back to this bike!!!!! Give me a reason to strike it off my list??? What a nice bike!!!!!!
You Sir have a problem, first world one I might add but still a problem. All 3 you have on your list are great bikes with a similar purpose, so let’s break it down. The GSA is a wonderful bike with more features than you can throw a stick at (Aussie saying) also stylish classy purposeful with heaps of grunt , I have an old RT at the moment and previously had an early GS so I do like my Beemers . The Tiger is a good mount also, well featured (a bit down on fuel capacity by memory) and that triple is just so sweet and I owned a Bonnie and loved it, I have a triple in my Spyder and it’s just such a sweet motor . And last but not least the mighty Tenere which you’ve seen my review so I probably don’t need to say anymore, all of these bikes have cruise and are made for a purpose. Something to take on board though is they are all tall & heavy as is of course your K1600 but on that you have reverse ( Gods gift to heavy motorcycles) . If I had to narrow it down it would be between the GSA & the mighty Tenere because of their longevity and availability of accessories etc but after that your on your own I’m afraid, I’d love to hear which way you go. Iv only ridden the 21 we haven’t seen the 22 Downunder yet, is the 22 a Thai built machine? Not that it probably matters nowadays with things being built all over the world, it’s just that I’ve had such a good run over the years with Japanese & German built bikes with reliability and accessories that I tend to lean towards them.
