Imagine people who just saw undertale or deltarune, wanted to see what else toby fox made, saw this hack and decided to play it and the difficulty spike immediately at the start of the game just went, "what you wanna play the game?????"
Fun fact: Some of the corrupted tiles and sprites were done by accident because modding was much harder back then. The only reason some things like the Remember Me enemy sprite have corruption is because Toby had to be very careful when modifying the game and thus had to leave some of the sprites and tiles messed up. Yes, I did steal this fact from the Toby Fox wiki. You are welcome.
Man the difficulty is BRUTAL but everything else is amazing. Sure it lost some shock value nowadays but the horror element is still there. Toby is really talented, can't believe he was a teen back then!

Actually the only romhack I still play. Fun Fact: The insanely OP enemies that keep you inside Twoson are actually weak to paralysis. If you paralyze them on the first turn, they become free EXP. The doom shroom and the shadow shrub along the entrance to Peaceful Rest Valley are both worth about 10,000 exp each. lmao
Oh yeah the insanely op enemies are there to make sure you don't wander off too far, but they're kinda tough to paralyse especially since if you fail you're definitly going to die, only reason I never try it is because I want the level progression to be natural (especially in this video)
Yeah that's true. But I've played through this a number of times too, and unlike EarthBound, this game isn't balanced very well, to the point where you pretty much have to grind at one point or another. Unlike the former where you can cruise through without stopping to do so. I just like to do it because it saves time in the long run.
That's very true, I've played this hack (and earthbound itself) a lot of times and I can safely say that the hack is extremly unfair with enemies and relies a LOT on grinding (which I think was to try and pad out the hacks length since if you never died it would only be around like 2 hours long) which is one of the few reasons I think it's not amazing, I wouldn't blame anyone for killing the op enemies at the start for a free 10 levels because of how tediously grindy the early game is, I just personally prefer not doing it because I want to experience how the hack is meant to be played without killing those enemies.
Toby fox was an incredibly talented teenager to make this. Barring the edge lord shit he understood how to write witty dialogue reminiscent of the mother games.
Edginess aside this is kinda creepy. But I'm here to talk about the amalgamates. Literally a bunch of different enemy sprites fused together. Really cool to see how the idea was brought back in Undertale, basically the same. Everyone talks about Megalovania, and for good reason, but there's more here that carried over into his later works.
while a the dialogue hasn't aged that well it's at least evocative enough to be effective and I do love that it starts with lazy recolor enemies in the first zone, then progressively more modified sprites to the point where you almost can't tell that they're edits, until it gets to the COMPLETELY new enemies also there's something really funny about getting blasted by lightning 2 steps away from a present with the Franklin Badge in it
Thanks for playing this so I didn't have to. I made it to the cave near the end of the game with the kraken and died every time, didn't know it was intended to be a metal gear solid demake there.
If you can exploit something, do it, this rom is unforgiving, i abused the hell out of enemy spawning by running away and coming back to get less enemies so i don't get ganked and die.
I'm very impressed that Toby did a Earthbound Halloween hack. Maybe it's edgy but still it's great on its way. I remember when I played some Nes games romhacks such as Darkwing Duck 2 (Super Contra) or Chip n' Dale 3 (Heavy Barrel). Good memories

@@sunshinefeon the hack is pretty hard but its pretty short too and is only kind of long because of how many times you're going to die which is why I usually always beat it in one sitting. It does become easier when you start to learn how the game works and almost every boss has something they're weak to. Altho a lot of areas rely heavily on luck and extremely unfair enemy placements. The only part of the hack that I think is always hard is the blood sewers because enemies love to trap you in a stun loop forever.
(Dad is that really you) huh you don't recognize me why I'm your jeff I know it's been a while since you've seen and, no dad I don't really want a donut dad I must go south a girl named girl keeps appearing in my dreams telling me its my destiny and even though I might still wet the bed can you help me ...! @@geradev9827 The game has a not so presented pacifism mechanic. It's activatated when running anyway, and presently as morally 100% good, but only to certain monsters, like the memory monsters that appear as Mother 2 objects and enemy sprites in the overworld. Ham-fisted, hasn't even spent a class to a morality philosophy lecture about or looked up someone's action, their reason (or rea) and it's effects changing in context. It's not purely good to be just a pacifist in ever situation, and it's technically Anti-Capitalist, which is in it of itself Capitalist, and doesn't help. I don't disagree with Undertale's take on killing for the heck of it on the Bad Kid route, but I find it strange, since it's (archetypically) enemies attacking the player to kill them, and the game assumes defeating enemies is to kill, not knock out as well. But that's Undertale's problems, this one, isn't very, well thought out? Undertale's brilliance is the mechanics - or your actions - affecting the morality system and narrative. It's just that the morality system is barebones, to the point where said bones can break. Halloween Hack is that, but the game doesn't tell the player about the morality system. Never has a subtle mechanical tutorial. The enemies are hard, AND edgey! Toby himself has said he cringes at the game. Can't blame him. A lot of the writing around Andonuts, it's pretty good at bits. Though the game doesn't go too far into Andonuts and his sexuality on a non-subtle level, it's well executed from a teenager in the 2000's era without a mainstream presence of the LGBT+. Hell, I like how it reflects on men realising they're gay when they're married with a wife, combining it with the loneliness and effect of being an underground group of being LGBT+ when it was barely understood and actively and passively ignored by the majority of society that's in power, forcing LGBT+ people and others to be hushed into the obscurity of the subculture, affecting how said people talk about these issues in the modern day. A good example of the latter is the writer Jacqueline Wilson (source: ua-cam.com/video/mmZfmOzBBJA/v-deo.html). It's just hidden amongst the accessibility and clarity issues. Which makes it sad for me, since I quote enjoyed it (until the final boss dialogue, which would fit better in a comedy).
@@harrietr.5073 pretty cool take. but on the undertale part of your reply, i'd like to say you are only seen as EVIL by the game if you go out of your way to kill every monster. this doesent mean killing every monster you encounter, it means genocide route. only on the genocide route does the game actually view you as evil since then you're literally going out of your way to kill everyone you possibly can rather than actually defending yourself. in neutral route you are literally just defending yourself because you arent trying to genocide, you're just trying to survive. and the reason why i dont think the game actually views you as evil on the neutral route is because sans' dialogue in the judgement hall can be summed up as "this is that blah blah blah you did what oyu thought was right blah thats what matters blah blah blah were rooting for u" or something like that. but yeah thats really all i have to add to this. edit: just to clear any confusion this was specifically a reply to you saying ""since it's (archetypically) enemies attacking the player to kill them" which, whilst it is true, the game doesent punish you for killing them unless you're doing genocide route, because then it isnt self defense.
@@electricpants8194 I mean, video games don't really tell the player if they killed or knocked out an enemy, Undertale's way of telling the player is subtle. Subtle enough for players to miss. But still you can still accidentally go on a Genocide route if you defend yourself from enemies, there's an, amount of enemies per area, and simply defending yourself can become the game calling you a mass murdere veering towards genocide. I think there should be a difference between defeating an enemy and killing an enemy to avoid accidentally going Genocide, like lowering to an enemy while say "___'s knocked out!" while killing is something else, like instant-kills maybe? Like, it's an Ailment enemies gain, enemies that are +K.O. from you defending yourself, while you making your enemies +Dead, random villagers +Dead and random menacing objects +Dead makes your route Genocide, or Bad Kid, or Murderer, or Negative.
@@electricpants8194 That quote is from talking about game archetypes, the game punishes you for killing whether intentional or not, E.G. Torial. The punishment with Torial is emotional, but it is still punishment. The abusive practice of parenting.

Oh thank you! I've beaten the hack plenty of times, I think it's fun to play through every once in a while despite how frustrating it can be.
@@Crimson_Carnival dang you've beaten in multiple times this hack looks hard! Yoube died so many times within the bloody sewers and you're telling me you've done it multiple times?
@@sunshinefeon the hack is pretty hard but its pretty short too and is only kind of long because of how many times you're going to die which is why I usually always beat it in one sitting. It does become easier when you start to learn how the game works and almost every boss has something they're weak to. Altho a lot of areas rely heavily on luck and extremely unfair enemy placements. The only part of the hack that I think is always hard is the blood sewers because enemies love to trap you in a stun loop forever.
i like how this is where megalovania originated and not undertale
Was Remember Me supposed to have a splotch of garbage pixels by its foot?

Once you got the the Sea of Eden, it truly was painful to watch. Either backtrack to recover your team or start utilizing all of the PSI caramels and other items you had in inventory. To add, trying to despawn the enemies in Eden is hilarious due to their spawn rate being 100%. Oof, just oof dude.

The game's pretty edgey, also the pacifist thing is given in a very ham-fisted way.
What pacifist thing?
