This game is so simple yet amazing. Also if you like this game you should also play yume 2kki. It doesn’t really carry the same vibe as the original but it’s amazing and it’s basically a massive unofficial sequel done by multiple people.
This is almost like an actual nightmare, it represents the loneliness and trauma of Modotsuki, this dream diary of hers helps her in finding a way to share her feelings without having to communicate, some people are instructed by their therapists to write diaries about how they feel, if they think they'll be blamed by talking to someone about it, Modotsuki's dreams represent how she feels, how her trauma affects her, you often get dreams about something that you often think about, or something you have experienced, Modotsuki's imagination comes from her trauma, she doesn't want to leave her room because she doesn't want to repeat the past, and she doesn't talk to others about it because she is afraid of judgement.
i like your theory, but the game itselfs it's so ambiguous that i believe the game tries to show how madotsuki its actually a mirror, a mirror that shows you how the world of the dreams works
Perhaps this is a lucid dream, or possibly how madotsuki sees the world. Not implying that she is delusional, but implying that it is a representation.

what impresses me is that it really looks like a dream, nothing makes sense if you play the game for the first time. but with time you stop to think about the thoughts of this little girl, because our dreams contain our traumas and thoughts, but all of them are placed in a messy and confused way in dreams. but at the same time they are a real representation of what happened in real life, but, in a way that your head represented the situation. it can be more traumatic and horrifying or it also can be so calm and innocent... depends on how your mind kept that memory and that scene in yourself.
this girl certainly suffered big traumas. because in the way that the events of her life are represented in the dreams, full of weird drawings and people around being disfigured and mean to her, it really is noticeable that real life was not a very pleasant place for her. and those traumas and bad memories that she had to suffer out of her room ended up getting even more disturbing in a dream form. so when she finishes going through all those memories, she ends her life. ending years of pain and leaving one of the most painful prisons that was her own mind.

I don’t really agree with the whole rape theory, but these are definitely the dreams of a clearly troubled person. This is not even because Madotsuki commits suicide or whatever. The atmosphere of almost every area is eerie and melancholic. There are only a handful of places which don’t give off a persistently creepy feel to them. One example that comes to mind is the Pink Sea, but even that area leads to the house containing the Uboa event. There are pretty nightmarish events to be witnessed all across the game. FACE, Uboa, the crazed Toriningen. Lesser known are events like the FC wall “glitch”. But what intrigues me most about Yume Nikki is the feeling of loneliness the game gives off. You’re thrust into these bizarre places with either very few NPCs or NPCs that you can’t interact with, ignoring you. This ties in well with the likelihood of the main character being a shut in and likely not interacting with very many people at all. Perhaps Madotsuki either got tired of these chronic nightmares or her lonely lifestyle and decided to put an end to it all...
Because Madotsuki deserve to have some fun with her friends(probably) after spending like a bunch load of time exploring her subconscious and kill herself at the end.
oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa oh ye ooh yaa
(I guess technically spoiler warning) So I just spent an hour watching some girl bike around, pick up objects, meet god, lay eggs that ARE the objects, then yeet herself? I'm new, forgive me.
People said that Yume Nikki is a super dark horror game. All I can see, however, is an artistic avant-garde game with scary elements. Am I missing something? To me it, lowkey, feels like a bunch of people tried to be 'mature' by seeing 'how dark' this game was but, instead, they just acted edgy. This game honestly feels like a dream that can be interpreted however you want. As far as my opinion goes, I think it is just a dream, that's it. I mean, I have no trauma but I can have some fucked up dreams because 1) Dreams be like that and 2)I watch a lot of anime and play a lot of games. So, for all we know, it could be just dreams.
It really isn't considering we have plausible theories as to what's going on and the MC literally kills herself at the end idk about you but this just seems like there's more to just "dreams"
I wouldn't really call it "edgy" or a horror game. The game is really fairly tame with it's imagery, and while the game has some creepy or frightening elements, that's not what the game is about. It's about exploration and experimentation. All the praise the game gets is from people trying to figure out what it all means, and why fulfilling the only real "goal" of the game leads to the character committing suicide, and trying to figure out what role the characters and events you see play in the decision. The mystery around the game is really the big draw for people. Even the sole creator of the game itself is a mystery, never having said a word about the game or the rumors/theories. (Although they probably just don't respond to westerners) If you want something that's actually dark and edgy, look into ".flow" which was inspired by Yume Nikki. Everything in that game is a lot more blatant in it's intent to scare/creep you out. Yume Nikki? not so much.
I've always found this game to be more sad than scary; I feel the same way about the Lavender Town music. A young girl escaping reality and hiding in her dreams, but even her dreams are overwhelming and dark. Reminds me of the Lisa games. It's really just depressing.
Its just like dreaming. They change so fast from normal stuff to scary inner thoughts. But they aren't nightmares. Nightmares are dreams that are scary or unnerving from the beginning. They peel at your darkest secrets and your worst thoughts...
Gooey Rainbow I would make a theory on this but idk how it would make sense Maybe the dens just got lazy and just slapped multiple decals on there or something
@@EndermanPierce Yep, it's the exact same bloodstain. On one hand, people did use that fact as springboard for theorizing Madotsuki didn't actually die, just killed herself in an another dream layer. On the other hand, chances are Kikiyama (the dev/creator of Yume Nikki) just went ahead and reused that blood splatter, since it does reappear on a completely unrelated area.
playing YN and its fangames religiously as a tween definitely shaped me in a peculiar way into adulthood, but i wouldn't have it any other way. the atmosphere just cant be beat! playing these alone in the dark at night when i felt like garbage definitely put me into a zen like state... (or a .flow state? lmao) i hope other people have as fond memories as i do playing this amazing game!
I first discovered this game when I was 19. At the time, I was morbidly depressed, and my life was in shambles. You'd think a game like this would make me feel worse, but honestly, I kindof felt like this game understood me. I'm 32 now, and while I'd be lying if I said the depression went away, I always check back on this game every now and then, because it left me with so many fond memories.
12thChosen name I put hours in this game and found a surprisingly decent amount of effects, I even found the space ship, the mall and some other characters. I just missed subtle things, like for HOURS I had no idea I could press a button to use an effect, and since I didn't know what my objective was I got stuck at some point and looked up a walkthrough instead.
I wish there were more games like this; and I'm not talking about the fan games, what I like is this sort of abstract symbolism and atmosphere Omori a shit
While omori gave the vibe "there is still a chance to repent" Yume nikki gave the vibe "you're hopeless and alone. No one will come to save you. This is your entire life. Do it :)"
There’s a lot of different interpretations of this game out there, but I feel like they kinda miss the point. Most theories about what this game is about focus on why the main character is a shut in, but I don’t think that’s the point. I think it’s about exploring *being* a shut in. Wether she was raped, has survivor’s guilt, or was bullied are all besides the point. It’s less about traumatic experiences and more about the experience of being traumatized.
Yeah you're right, it all kinda just, feels like the essence of being in that traumatic moment. Nothings right, it'd unnerving, scary, and you never really know what's happening or gonna happen next, and those elements still play into the trauma responses and how you feel afterwards and the longing affects
2004 was around the beginning of internet horror stories, creepy animation like salad fingers, and indi horror games that grew into what they are today. I feel like amateurs are better at horror then actually movie producers and AAA game companies.
There are a lot of inspirations, but I can't understand if they're taken by a common source or if Omori was inspired by Yume Nikki. For example in both the games hands are used to get out of the rooms.
I saw a fanart of omori, Undertale, Yume Nikki and Earthbound protagonists in one place. I knew about Nikki's existence since like 2018, when Undertale popularity still was around, but only now in 2021 with some Omori influence and the fan art i decided to watch Nikki.
The soundtrack at 9:45 combined with the images and patterns really remind me of the Mochica Empire from my home country Peru. That music sounds Andean for some reason, and I love it
Yes, there are lots of references to old Mesoamerican civilizations (a lot of designs take inspiration from Peruvian textiles) like the Aztecs, Paracas, Nazcans and Incans, just as there is Japanese culture. Whether or not this has meaning is up for debate.
@@marioandtyler It would be interesting to believe that out protagonist was of meso-american heritage. Maybe she got bullied at school because of it; moving from her homeland to Japan.
I see a lot of similarities with omori, omocat definitely took inspiration from this game :) (only continue reading if you have played omori if you don't want spoilers) the creepy stretching arms, the bridge, the vasts seas of nowhere with just a few things scattered around, the creepy backgrounds you see in some rooms, the cryptic symbols and wandering monsters that refer to a trauma, the doors, the red maze, the fact that the protagonists are "dreaming", ...
I'm speechless. This is... amazing. The bizarre imagery and haunting soundtrack. I want to know more and understand. Even though, i don't think understanding is really a requirement.
when i was much younger i was at some place like a big doctors office and i started to wonder around and the ac cut on and it sounded like the ambiance in the red maze it gave me a really good feeling because it reminded me of that i was like this sounds familiar lol
This game is exactly what dreams feel like! Weird places and the fact that you go random places could be a reference to that dreams sometimes change...

This game is a work of art.
this game is a masterpiece. it really shows the potential of gaming as an artform, in my opinion. this is an experience that can only be had in a video game. of course there are movies and books that are confusing, abstract, and filled with heavy symbolism (eraserhead and house of leaves are great!) but they can't really immerse you like this game does, because it's not you who's exploring a strange world, you're just watching other people do it for you. it's incredible. you could show this game to 100 people and all of then will have different interpretations of it.
Her dreams could've possibly be daydreams (maladaptive daydreamimg -> trauma response coping mechanism). Her leaving all the effects and waking up could symbolise her realising that all her progress was not real and that she has nothing in real life. :(
this game definitely makes me think of black space, from omori, with all the different doors and the fact that it’s a very weird-core like environment that isn’t real. i really adore this game
This game is amazing for what it is. It is an atmospheric exploration game and the best thing is that you don’t have to go a specific path. It’s just doing your own thing. too bad so many people in the comments section can’t appreciate the simplicity of this game. Apparently everything has to be an epic FPS game with 100 billion different game modes and skins Games should be judged for what they try to be and how they accomplish it and not for what they don’t want to be.
It’s also nice seeing people discover this game from Omori :) Edit: okay, the whole idksterling thing has made me transform into an elitist. Hate those annoying kids
I think it's best if you don't think about what you're "supposed" to do. Just focus on exploring and taking in the sights and sounds at your pace and on your own terms, rather than thinking about "completing" the game
My favorite is the Pink Sea. It has a calming soundtrack but hides a terribly deep secret in a normal house in the middle of a sea you wouldn't expect anything terrible from. It's so mysterious but calming and peaceful. Sometimes I wish I lived in the middle of the Pink Sea, but that would be hard since there is no food and the atmosphere is mysterious. Sometimes I feel like I don't have any safety when turning off lights like there is a monster haunting me. That's the circumstance of UBOA. What about you, guys? Your favorite soundtrack and place?
This game in my head Cannon, takes place after the defeat of Giygas. Madostuki, is a young woman living alone in her own apartment room. Lonely and depressed, she contemplates over the thought of taking her own life. Or just continue to live. Out of options, she goes to sleep, after playing with her video game. Too depressed to go outside too. She goes in to her own dreamscape. To find the pieces missing in her Id. Unbeknownst to her, she actually has psychic powers. Fortunately, these powers are not being used to fight evil like Ness and his friends. These powers are used to fight The evil that is her own depression. Those pieces that must be used, so that her sanity and common Sense can be restored. So that she may change her mind or go on with what she wants to do with herself......
@@tasya3771 It's a pain in the butt to run on a Mac :c I figured it out but I've had some unpleasant things happen - Nasu crashes the game, some events cause it to freeze, and certain events caused tremendous lag.
Purest definition of a child undergoing trauma and madness at a very very young age. Like I'm talking like 3 or 4 years old, not enough to fully talk but enough to keep a cursed memory
To be honest.... this game is really confusing. why suicide at the end? "its a dream" your only in dream with the items, but at the end, your awake. Are there any other endings? whats the reason of the worlds? who are those characters she sees? why cant she get out of the room? Its all so confusing. i dont think its trauma. something deeper is in it. Not exactly dark, but something else... Altough, beautifull game.

I think that this is just a lucid dream simulator. I always have dreams like this, and they give me the same eery feeling.

I think they're talking about the most popular plot line when they say it's 'dark'
(Although they probably just don't respond to westerners)
If you want something that's actually dark and edgy, look into ".flow" which was inspired by Yume Nikki. Everything in that game is a lot more blatant in it's intent to scare/creep you out. Yume Nikki? not so much.

This is almost like an actual nightmare, it represents the loneliness and trauma of Madotsuki, this dream diary of hers helps her in finding a way to share her feelings without having to communicate, some people are instructed by their therapists to write diaries about how they feel, if they think they’ll be blamed by talking to someone about it, Matdotsuki’s dreams represent how she feels, how her trauma affects her, you often get dreams about something that you often think about, or something you have experienced. Matdotsuki’s imagination comes from her trauma, she doesn’t want to leave her room because she doesn’t want to repeat the past and she doesn’t talk to others about it because she is afraid of judgement. This game is a work of art.
why did you copy paste ?
this came out all the way back in 2004? thought it must've come out in 2011 or something. god that makes it feel much sadder somehow
I found this through a fan game of this same game called “Dream World” in roblox. I really want to play this game soon.
Same like Omori
this game is a masterpiece. it really shows the potential of gaming as an artform, in my opinion. this is an experience that can only be had in a video game. of course there are movies and books that are confusing, abstract, and filled with heavy symbolism (eraserhead and house of leaves are great!) but they can't really immerse you like this game does, because it's not you who's exploring a strange world, you're just watching other people do it for you. it's incredible. you could show this game to 100 people and all of then will have different interpretations of it.
Those videos with weirdcore images with music, and OMORI’s Blackspace led me here, I’m so glad that happened.
Her dreams could've possibly be daydreams (maladaptive daydreamimg -> trauma response coping mechanism).
Her leaving all the effects and waking up could symbolise her realising that all her progress was not real and that she has nothing in real life.
:(
I always hate it when I lurk on UA-cam while trying to sleep
this game definitely makes me think of black space, from omori, with all the different doors and the fact that it’s a very weird-core like environment that isn’t real. i really adore this game
there's something so comforting about this game that always keeps me coming back
This game is amazing for what it is. It is an atmospheric exploration game and the best thing is that you don’t have to go a specific path. It’s just doing your own thing. too bad so many people in the comments section can’t appreciate the simplicity of this game. Apparently everything has to be an epic FPS game with 100 billion different game modes and skins
Games should be judged for what they try to be and how they accomplish it and not for what they don’t want to be.
It’s also nice seeing people discover this game from Omori :)

One of the greatest games with one of the greatest endings of all time.
