I grew up in Germany. Served in LRRP (Fernspäh 100). Immigrated to SA in 1990. South Africans are the most amazing and capable soldiers I ever met. Salute you all!
Hi Hannes the last time I saw you was at Cuito. You are still looking good after all these years. Honoured to have served with you sir. I was Piet Nel's gunner.
I found it amazing to hear Hannes Nortmann himself - up till now I have followed a lot of stuff about him and the legend. What a priviledge to listen to him firsthand. Koos you are doing an amazing job, thank you. When he dsecribes the night advance towards the infantry and later the tanks across the shona, he put us right into the moment to an extent I have not previously felt it. What a priviledge. If I were Hannes Nortmann I would be probably be an arrogant sod......so his humility and humanity really impressed me. In fact Koos that is what I like about your guests and indeed your own persona, it is all pepole who have lived beyond the arrogance of youth and have come out as rounded and gracious people.
Jissie... what a shot, ek sé! Thanks for sharing your experiences... goose bumps stuff! Koos, it would be great if you could do a group chat with the four gents who made up that special team! Mind you - they make the lads from Kelly's Hero's look like amateurs which of course, they were!
Hey Hannes! Really great to see you again after all this time! I was at 101bn in 1984 when we spent some time together at Miershoop. You were still a Captain at the time and I remember organising a Koevoet cap (with the orange dayglo) for each of us. I still have mine. Also remember one quiet afternoon when I convinced you to test me for my samil licence 🤣🤣 so I still have that signature of yours on my blue SADF licence. I also have fond memories of our order groups every night, especially those nights we shot fire plans with the 81s and 60s…… Glad to see you are well!
I thought the same thing when I read about the account. I assume the missile may have detonated against a metal step or stowage bin. I know the optimal stand off distance for a HEAT round is about one and a half times the diameter of the widest part of the copper cone in the shaped charge. It seems like it detonated just out of that range.
@@henklotz6480 But the ZT3 fired wire guided ATGMs which are hollow charged and HEAT, which rely on the Monroe or Von Neuman Effect. Depleted uranium is used as a penetrator in high velocity guns and rely on kinetic energy for their effect. The Rooikat with its high velocity gun uses depleted uranium penetrators.
The latest simulator on the rooikat is like real life and that thing at least the latest version of the rooikat scares me if ever you are back in SA Koos i fill try get ypu in the simulator but it might not be easy
Thanks you your story, amazing listening to bravery in the line of duty. I was at a base close to ruacana and my doctor had to go suddenly to somewhere and he grabbed my nco bag. It turned out he was taken to calueque and he left my nco bag somewhere and went for a drive in an ambulance while he was driving the mig bomb hit and all that was left of my bag was a kidney dish
Another great and interesting interview. Thank you.
Great chat always had huge respect for the armour crew so brave
Great to hear
I'm not sure, i think the Mirage pilot that was hit by the frontal attack was Arthur Piercy.
Legend! Baie geniet dankie.
Hannes....Koos that was terrific
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️'s
...... left a can of Coke of the roof of the commanders vehicle ..🤣😂🤣😂
Great recount, interesting. Brave bunch of guys.
The German tank commanders of WW2 also used to keep their heads out of Coppola. The Russians didn't.
Great interview. Thanks.
Hannes goed om van jou te hoor het jou laas by Leer Kollege gesien. In 1977 of 78.
That was great it would be interesting to hear more from the armor division
absolutely awesome!!!
The missile used was the "Swift" with 600mm penetration capabilities at zero degrees.
Salute / Saluut.
Riveting, thank you gents
Kol Hannes was awesome om te luister my pa het my baie van Kol vertel julle was saam by akademie Lt kol Henk Rheeders hy was ook panser gewees
Dankie manne
Ho major i salute you were your driver in 1987 ops modoleer
Kom vertel ons jou ervarings, Koos
Odd that the 90mm HEAT didn't penetrate. The kinetic speed has no relevance on the HEATs penetration value.
