I notice you use a lot of bevel iterations when you set your edges. I have found a solution to sharp corners using the bevel modifier that generates much less geometry and arguably looks even better. When making the bevel modifier, you want to set your segments to 2, then go into the profile dropdown on the bevel modifier. The shape is automatically set to .5; Set it to 1 instead. This preserves the actual angle of the corner being beveled, but adds geometry to either side of that corner. This essentially 'tricks' the smooth shading and preserves flat surfaces while making the corners look rounded. Discovering this has been a godsend for me.

I must have clicked on your wrong video because it is the first one for me, but my mouth got draw of constant jaw dropping how fast and professional you are. I did not understand all fully, nor I wanted to, but man, you are someone I enjoy watching :)
At the 35:00 mark, after you make your walk path, make sure to apply any rotation or scale, otherwise when you do the bone constraint, it does weird stuff.
maybe thats what i need to do. Been trying to get this thing to follow that path. Once I click the path my leg jumps pointing straight down.. and wont move
bro you have helped me learn so much about blender since I just started a few days ago..the first day it took me hours just to make it 3:00 into this video and I struggled badddd man it was frustrating I had to take so many breaks to "re-collect" my thoughts lol.. now though I can do that part in seconds and even though I'm still only around 7:00 minutes into it now, things are getting so much easier and faster by lightyears. but lemme tell ya though it was just a really super funnnn time learning all the shortcut buttons and trying to navigate everything.. "pause" "rewind", "stop" "freeze frame" "play" "stop" "rewind" lol ur videos been on my screen for almost 2 days now pretty much.. anyways i got the hang of it now so I just wanted to say thankyou bro because this video could potentially change my life and I appreciate it , and you
Hello, TIP FOR BEGINNERS at 36:13 when it says "be sure that everything is selected" before to apply the linear extrapolation, it means that all the channels of the Dope sheet must be open, all the Offsets selected by clicking on the line (appears in green), all the dots selected (appears in yellow) 🤘😁🤘
I love that Blender has someone like Blender guru and his donut. to get new people into the program showing off how to use the program then releases them into doing their own projects. once you feel you can't break the ceiling on your own anymore you can find this kind of tutorial that assumes you know what you are doing and just explains how to master it. it is amazing! most of the tricks go way over my head at the moment but I will come back and i will become better!
I love these insect robot tutorials 😊 Just a quick idea for the floor: when you increase the array count to not run out of floor, you don't need a long floor actually. Instead you can animate the texture mapping. Let's say you move the floor 5 m in X direction between two keyframes. When using the "Object" texture coordinate, you can move the texture with the Mapping node 5 m on X (or -5) and the floor can stay in place. As long as the texture is set to repeat, the creature can run forever 😁
Thanks for watching!! Hmm in my experience animated texture mapping doesn’t support motion blur! I have previously solved this problem by making a conveyor belt, which is especially useful when working with a lot of particles that would otherwise slow down the render: ua-cam.com/video/CYiokE-4onU/v-deo.html
@@Polyfjord Yeah, I thought of a conveyor belt before, too - but then I deemed the texture solution to be easier. But damn, I guess you're right, the motion blur could be a problem.
I have been waiting for this from so many days .. Finally it's released Can't wait to watch this amazing tutorial and I'll start my own version of this 😀
I've never used blender aside from messing around with tools I've never seen before, watching the first 30 seconds of him modeling the joint was like black magic.. And honestly I want in. I'm a Freshman in high school and Blender was already going to be a hobby that I take up over the summer and beyond, this should be fun.
Excellent video! But I have one request for the future. I understand that you can't go into too much detail on modeling every time, but for beginners like me, it would be VERY useful if you just turned on the display of keystrokes. Some manipulations are not always possible to catch, even if in general you explain what you are doing)
You are an absolute legend. Not only did this tutorial work it taught me a ton about rigging. THANK YOU!!!!! I will also add I am using Blender 4.2. and it was still all relevant.
for those who can't redo the rigging at 28:40, delete parenting in object properties (relations). In pose mode, subdivide the last bone, reparent the meshes and then (tricky part) you need to rename the bones so that they follow the right order. Blender uses their names for the hierachy of bones!
When I move my object or the empty in object mode my whole rig just moves with all the bones just gets misplaced. In the tutorial when he moves the empty his end part of the bone stays in the same place and only is empty is moving but that's not happening for me any solution for this ? Will be great full
Still working on this as a first time user (after the donut tut) and it's really striking how powerful blender is. Thanks for the great tutorial, altho it would be nice if you kept the shortcuts on screen for the whole thing... Appreciate it man!
jeez watching you work in real-ish time is incredible. obviously there are probably a bunch of cuts for brevity’s sake but when you’re talking and casually flying through shortcuts it’s actually very inspiring. edit: aw man, idk what happened to my armature. the movement starts at the second joint, not at the first z-axis one. edit 2: LOL nvm I figured it out. the chain length was the same as yours but you forgot to add the last bone. got iiiit.
I am new to Blender. I just made my donut, and then I saw this video. It took me a couple of hours, but I actually did it. I need to render animation next. Thank you for the tutorial. This is a pretty creative spider creature.
This tutorial is gold ! Thanks 😀 ( Would be nice to see the pressed keys as sometimes it's a bit hard for us noobies to figure out what's going on, but it's amazing )
Very good totourial with explaining all the details with examples , good job , I also loved the fact that instead of some crappy nerve breaking ai , its actually a normal human voice
I love how in the beginning the video feels like, straight-edge, super-effective and focused professional, but with every piece created it drives him ever so slightly more crazy, until ... ...in the end, he's like a maniac in some kind of a creative trans.
@@Polyfjord CTRL+L -> Copy Animation Data. And you can then make local under: Object menu -> Relations -> Make Single User -> Object Animation or Object Data Animation (idk the difference between those two)
Fantastic tutorial, as always! 48:18 do you have Persistent Data enabled for renders? If you go to Render Properties -> Performance -> Final Render, there is a checkbox titled "Persistent Data" which sends the scene data to the GPU only on the first frame and keeps it in the GPU's memory for the next frames in the animation. Not sure if that would help your situation, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
As a newbie trying out Blender for the first time, I didn't realize just how many times Blender would crash until I finally began spamming Ctrl+S. This will be the third time I've tried this tutorial!
is it possible to have the legs automatically step toward the body when the body is the only thing that has keyframes for movement are rotation? Without having to animate the legs manually
Having trouble at about 32 minutes in. I have all 6 legs, the IK seems to work fine, but when I use the child of constraint to attach a leg to the body controller it just moves the leg around instead of using the IK and bending it. It seems like the small controller bone at the end of the leg stays in place when you move the body controller, but mine just floats around. Any idea where I went wrong?
Found the problem. There are Bone Constraints and Object Constraints. the Bone Constraints tag you can only see while being in Pose Mode, so go into Pose Mode and add Bone Constraints instead of Object Constraints, even tho if they looks the same, so thats a little bit confusing. But i hope i could help you.
I'm at 3 minutes and already learned something new! Alt to loop select, it will make my modeling so much faster! I'm a beginner. Will try to make it complete. Thank you
Is there a reason why you use shift + d to duplicate the actual geometry instead of alt + d which duplicates the object and uses the same geometry? With alt +d you would just have edit the original not every duplicate and it should perform better overall as well.
Thank you, I needed this video. I've been working on Blender for while and is in a slump. Seeing your enthusiasm and amazing idea gave me some much needed energy.
31:55 Im having trouble with attaching the armature leg to child of the body controller, whenever i do it and move the body controller, my leg is dead stiff and moves in a straight line, (it doesn;t bend at the joints) anyone know the reason??
I've figured it out and I'm kicking myself for not realising what it was for this long. The reason it isn't working (at least for me anyway) was because I was using the object constraints panel on the right rather than the bone constraints panel. Hope this helps!
First u should join both bezier curves if you duplicated them in object mode (select both of them then press Ctrl + J) then select both of the top vertices and press F to fill between. Then you'll have a weird thingy u'll know when you see it. Select one of the two vertices and delete it by pressing X -> Vertices. Hope it helps :)
Hello, i have a problem, i'm at 32:30 and when i hit scale my bones are all moving toward the same Y-axis, they are not going towards the center as in the video, any idea why ? I have checked the center point and settings Edit, they seam to keep the same distancies beetween them
Hey please someone help 35:05 ,when i do the same ( using follow path constraint ) and select that curve the leg gets straight up, i mean its just becomes vertically up, please someone help
@@fitertom9930 I have the exact same problem but after searching the internet: nope Edit: I found a solution! On the path and bones just hit ctrl+A and select Location, that fixed it for me
for beginners : the hot key at 12:25 is just press 'F' to connect two end points. If you encounter error 'cannot make segment', here is why: The 'F' key is used for creating segments within a single curve, not for connecting separate curves. you need to joint the two curves in object mode (ctrl + j) first.
Returning here 2 years after I first saw the video, I realised just now how much I have learnt. I am so grateful for your channel, everytNice tutorialng
Can't express how happy I am with this tutorial and making this robotic inset come alive. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I'm learning blender and i'm fascinated with your channel.
Bro, you just got a new sub. You have just taught me new things about blender, and you have also gotten me into a new type of creature. This video helped me make my own type of mechanical spider of my own. Without your help, I would have never learned how to rig things in like, 5 or so minutes. This video was just great all together, I love your interpretations of mechanical creatures like that!
THANK YOU Polyfjord!!! I finished my very first animation and render(s) with your help. Plus it was my first time doing anything with the armature. I got Blender because I needed something to make models with for my 3d printer. I chose it for multiple reasons, one of them being that I knew that it is capable of that, this, and so much more. I also knew that if I had it, I would almost have to learn. It's just so hard to find the time. Yeah, there was a LOT of valuable information given in a short period of time, but you can pause/rewind any time you want. That's just one of the benefits of learning from UA-cam videos. Also you were there for me day and night at any moments notice. Thank you. I want to add that I started watching your "next" video. I think the first thing I noticed was that you moved your "chat" window so we can see the keystrokes displayed onscreen. It must have helped because I remember looking at it quite a few times. I see you have streamlined the whole process from presentation all the way down to more of the powerful mechanics built into Blender now. The timing feels perfect. I am glad I went through all of the steps to finish this. I feel like I understand more of the underlying fundamentals than if I went straight to the new quicker and much easier approach. I am confident that it will go quickly when I get back to it. I'm just thinking I need to add a little bummpety-bumpy audio to this one first. I am so excited and happy. I will create!!! I will create good things! (I hope) :)
I just have to say, thank you so much for this tutorial. I was making mechanical spider (yes with 8 legs xD) for my final project at faculty. And this tutorial helped a TON for riging and animation of spider! I had to watch some other tutorial to rig pistons for leg movement, but overall this one was a charm! extremely well explained and really easy to follow along, even the modeling part! Great work!
With the mistakes and all in the video has actually made me learn more about how to do something like this in the future. Saved this video to come back to whenever I get onto Blender. Which is very often. I definitely am happy to have come across this video which I find very helpful.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, turned out to be one of the coolest things I ever made in blender. Also love the spider design and the aesthetics.

I swear, you have the most inspiring and amazing tutorials. Thank you for uploading these - I get ideas and learn something new every time.
OH thank gawd. that was it! been trying ot figure that out all morning. Thank you
bro you have helped me learn so much about blender since I just started a few days ago..the first day it took me hours just to make it 3:00 into this video and I struggled badddd man it was frustrating I had to take so many breaks to "re-collect" my thoughts lol.. now though I can do that part in seconds and even though I'm still only around 7:00 minutes into it now, things are getting so much easier and faster by lightyears. but lemme tell ya though it was just a really super funnnn time learning all the shortcut buttons and trying to navigate everything.. "pause" "rewind", "stop" "freeze frame" "play" "stop" "rewind" lol ur videos been on my screen for almost 2 days now pretty much.. anyways i got the hang of it now so I just wanted to say thankyou bro because this video could potentially change my life and I appreciate it , and you
im stuck at 2 minutes .
Im unable to bevel my thing :(
been waiting so long for this, can't wait to learn! 👍
I've watched hours of rigging videos and you're the only dude I've found to talk about the locking rotation in the IK menu. Thank you.
Hello,
TIP FOR BEGINNERS
at 36:13 when it says "be sure that everything is selected" before to apply the linear extrapolation, it means that all the channels of the Dope sheet must be open, all the Offsets selected by clicking on the line (appears in green), all the dots selected (appears in yellow) 🤘😁🤘
I wanted to watch just a little bit and save it to "watch later", but I couldn't stop watching it, it's amazing
I have been waiting for this from so many days ..
Finally it's released
Can't wait to watch this amazing tutorial and I'll start my own version of this 😀
I've never used blender aside from messing around with tools I've never seen before, watching the first 30 seconds of him modeling the joint was like black magic..
I love fast tutorials like this, often i watch them whole without blender and then start again in blender, makes me learn so much :)
I only wish my artists in the studio were as talented as you are, sir. Amazing job
I bet they wish bigger salary :)

Sounds like you need a more competitive offer for hiring.
I'm available for remote work... over 20 years experience. I'll give you a day for free to show you what I can do. Just let me know what you need ...
Will be great full
im having the same issue did you ever find a solution for it?@@RohitKumar-yj1cn
I dare to say that I learned more in one of your videos than in all the other videos combined that I've seen about blender. simply the greatest
Still working on this as a first time user (after the donut tut) and it's really striking how powerful blender is. Thanks for the great tutorial, altho it would be nice if you kept the shortcuts on screen for the whole thing... Appreciate it man!
For me, as a beginner in blender, it was a revelation how you can master all its tools)). Thank you, now I know what I'm aiming for.
jeez watching you work in real-ish time is incredible. obviously there are probably a bunch of cuts for brevity’s sake but when you’re talking and casually flying through shortcuts it’s actually very inspiring. edit: aw man, idk what happened to my armature. the movement starts at the second joint, not at the first z-axis one. edit 2: LOL nvm I figured it out. the chain length was the same as yours but you forgot to add the last bone. got iiiit.
I am new to Blender. I just made my donut, and then I saw this video. It took me a couple of hours, but I actually did it. I need to render animation next.
Thank you for the tutorial. This is a pretty creative spider creature.
This tutorial is gold ! Thanks 😀
( Would be nice to see the pressed keys as sometimes it's a bit hard for us noobies to figure out what's going on, but it's amazing )
Very good totourial with explaining all the details with examples , good job ,
I also loved the fact that instead of some crappy nerve breaking ai , its actually a normal human voice
poly, ever thought of using screencast keys for your tutorials? it makes making tutorials so much easier for beginners
It amazes me how much you can get done with a relatively few amount of modular parts for these types of mechs. Thanks for the tutorial.
You never fail to impress, my man. Quality over quantity every time
54 minutes for a whole tutorial, and its really informative compact, AMAZING
if your bones and mesh move at 33:01, make sure your cursor is at the exact center of all your armature, or else scale around the median point

...in the end, he's like a maniac in some kind of a creative trans.
36:03 you could copy animation (but would of separate datablock afterward to offset animation individually)
Niiiiice! I was suspecting there could be a way to do that.. Will definitely try this, thanks!!
@@Polyfjord CTRL+L -> Copy Animation Data.
And you can then make local under:
Object menu -> Relations -> Make Single User -> Object Animation
or Object Data Animation (idk the difference between those two)

DUDE!! How do you even do this?!?! It´s just incredible!! Your hacks and trick ACTUALLY work!!
Thank you, this will be needed
It is pure joy to watch your level of skill with this software. I'm enthralled.
Really need help with the path 34:45 ... I am stuck when I make the bone follow that path my bone automatically moves toward the curve.... :''')
same here..
Pls reply if you found a solution
in the object mode. select the path you want to follow. ctrl+a . select all transforms
Like this: ua-cam.com/video/imbIsNAvUpM/v-deo.html ?
This tutorial is the god of all tutorials. Change my mind.
Have the same problem. i will tell you when i found out how to solve it.
@@yannick5116 Thank you, I have been trying to find a solution for ages, you're a lifesaver.

@@yannick5116 Thank you!!
With alt +d you would just have edit the original not every duplicate and it should perform better overall as well.
came here looking for this!
Nope but I'm having the same issue so I'll say if I figure it out
I've figured it out and I'm kicking myself for not realising what it was for this long. The reason it isn't working (at least for me anyway) was because I was using the object constraints panel on the right rather than the bone constraints panel. Hope this helps!

How did you connect the curves on 12:24?
Just Press "F" for fill
If there's one thing I always take away from these videos it's that watching a master at work is just awesome.
12:23 please does anyone know what hotkey he uses here?
Press F
First u should join both bezier curves if you duplicated them in object mode (select both of them then press Ctrl + J) then select both of the top vertices and press F to fill between. Then you'll have a weird thingy u'll know when you see it. Select one of the two vertices and delete it by pressing X -> Vertices. Hope it helps :)
Even if it doesn't feel like a tutorial, it's great to see how real process of making something cool in blender looks like :)

Congratulations on your animation!! Thanks for watching! 🙏
for beginners : the hot key at 12:25 is just press 'F' to connect two end points. If you encounter error 'cannot make segment', here is why: The 'F' key is used for creating segments within a single curve, not for connecting separate curves. you need to joint the two curves in object mode (ctrl + j) first.
Thnx !!!

The old expression "passion translates" is perhaps the most fitting definition of this channel. It's pure and beautiful. Great stuff :)
Guy does a detailing and quality work.
I definitely am happy to have come across this video which I find very helpful.
product will be awesome when you love your job
Thank you so much for this tutorial, turned out to be one of the coolest things I ever made in blender. Also love the spider design and the aesthetics.
