I thought Grey building the hex board off of tiles is insane, little did i know that he is going to record and animate like 100 videos for rock paper scissors
On the original hexagons video I remember thinking "Hey, what about hexagon Minesweeper!?" and considered making it. However I found Globesweeper which not only had hexagons, but also solved the issues caused by the border by being on a globe. I found that hexagon Minesweeper was NOT that great, actually. This is because you need more clues per corner. A hexagon has 6 sides, but each corner is only adjacent to 3 tiles, as opposed to the classic square where it only has 4 sides but each corner is adjacent to 4 tiles. The interesting logic puzzles only occur when you have at least 3 clues to compare against. With the hexagons, it was usually either perfectly clear or impossible to deduce. So, though you CAN hexagon Minesweeper, you really shouldn't bother. But then that same game really blew my mind when it gave me triangles! Now that's where it's at! With 6 tiles to a corner, you have a lot to work with. And for you hexagon enthusiasts, don't worry. The hexagons are still there, they're just hiding among the triangles.
You should try the Hexcells games! It starts out as hexagonal minesweeper but as a puzzle game, so it's always possible to solve, but quickly gets even more interesting as it adds other fun rules and mechanics.
The Black Bishop couldn't take a square next to it. And White's Bishop could have killed the black queen even if the White King couldn't. Edit: Capitalization for easy of reading.
I absolutely love that chess nerds will always tell you when you did something wrong, even in a game you’ve never seen before 2 minutes after the video drops
I'm not smart enough for regular chess, but I do love hexagons, so I bought Hive and just call it "bug chess" 🤣 maybe one day I can aspire to real hexagonal chess
The king is limited in movement because communications will collapse if he moves around too much. He leads the battle, after all, and every unit has to look to him for commands and sending status reports.
the problem with making any chess variant is that the only thing that actually makes chess good is the high number of people that know the rules of the game, so as soon as you change the rules you have no one to play with
However, like any popular online game, getting into chess can feel intimidating because people are so good at it. You can get in at the bottom in the online Hex Chess community! (There is an online community, right)
@@djhakasethere's always more than enough players at your level to play with in chess. With more niche games it's harder to find players at your skill level
Bit of a question about pawns. You describe diagonal motion really clearly in this video, and I agree that it’s really elegant on a hex board. But shouldn’t that mean pawns attack that way as well, teleporting to that corresponding color? I trust that this was playtested to not be the case, but just curious to know how that may affect things!
It's important to the game that pawns build a line of defense that allows low value pieces to defend each other and prevent a chaotic blood bath at the very beginning. The translation of their movement isn't as literal, but the way they serve the game is the same. I believe diagonal movement as shown with bishops would not allow an effective wall.
Please bring back comments Grey. The comment section is one of the many factors that contribute to why the UA-cam watching experience is so special to me. Reading what other viewers' thoughts on the video, both the good and bad, then also reading others' thoughts on those comments does really elevate the experience. As a student who doesn't have time for other social media sites, nor the processing power to even engage with them (my devices are always slow), UA-cam is the only site I often use. Putting Reddit as the main way views can engage in discussion is inconvenient at best, and at worst, destructive. This video is a clear example; it is mostly just regular praise for the content, and maybe one or two thought-provoking comments, but that's it. You can never expect most people to put more thought and effort than the bare minimum to comment, of course, but that's what reply chains are for. Without it, the video, while still very well-made of course, just feels so much emptire; it is not much better than turning off your comments entirely. I dont't even know if you will, or can, read this, and you do not owe your non-patron viewers like myself anything, but I do sincerely hope you'll really consider going back on this decision. I'd rather deal with bots then take away the magic of the comment section. Sincerely, An avid, non-patron fan.
Not happy with the multiple membership levels. Saw that a video as restricted, "members only", clicked "become a member", became a member, and it was STILL restricted, because apparently I needed a higher level. In the browser, I now see it is clear when you click a video what level is required, but in the smart TV app it's not. You make great videos, and apparently I was even prepared to become a paying member, but this was a bummer :(
I recently started watching your videos and I really like the poetic way that you speak sometimes. Plus your opinion on things is quite interesting to listen to beyond the manner in which you speak.❤
I loved learning about Hexagon Chess!! Over time I felt increasingly disinterested in getting to know more about Chess than I already do (i.e. pretty, pretty basic) cause like... It *feels* as if everything is already kind of discovered? Or should have been? Not to mention computers, player AIs, etc. It's been around for such a long time and it seems like everytime I make an opening move, an experienced opponent knows EXACTLY what it is and exactly how to counter and knows what I'm going to do, how it's going to go - or, I mean, I could always be unpredictable but that would only happen by making a mistake, I guess, which is _worse_. So I don't feel very excited to learn how to play better... But this seems like a shake up in that it opens the game so much that creativity is more rewarded than mechanical manipulation of known patterns.
You've really opened up a whole new way of thinking about other games. What would hexagonal baseball look like? Football (soccer)? Football (rugby)? Football (football)?
Two ideas for how you could get different colored hexagons 1. Can't you buy uniform board game pieces that are hexagons? 2. You can definetely buy tiles meant for tiling walls and floors that are hexagons and matt. Might be dificult to find ones that aren't too big or small.
That would be really fun but that would without a doubt take way more of his time. Even a pessimistic estimate would be that each game would take about 30 minutes, plus the hassle of finding a time when both players are available to play, with 100 people.
the problem with this is that chess was designed to be on squares. Grey mentions that hexes are often used to get rid of diagonals. I think then, if you convert chess to hexes, you should get rid of the diagonals. such a big change may seem outlandish but if your going to try and upgrade the game with the board, reflect that in the rules, otherwise the hexes don't really serve much purpose.
I come to this comments section to speak not of this video, but the one that comes after: one-in-a-million. Having to do so only because the comments on said video are turned off. I get CGP Grey's mentality most of the time, but not this time... not now. I will say it is very cool that you uploaded all of the results videos days in advance.
Hexagon is chessagon!
The obvious portmanteu would be chex.
Chexagon?
I agree
Welp, that’s a game changer right there 😅
As a square chess lover, thank you for explaining this in classic easy-to-understand Grey style. Now I have to learn how to play!
more like find a way to play holy crap i can’t find anyone else anywhere on the internet to play it 😔

I have watched this so many times, and only just now noticed that at 1:02 Grey says "That's a hexcelent question" 😂😂
Can’t the white king at 10:35 just capture the black queen? She’s not protected by the bishop
My brain was clearly too melted by that point -- I got my hex diagonals confused. CURSE YOU DIAGONALS!

"Can Chess, with Hexagons?" is such a wonderfully minimalistic video title. I love it.
I do enjoy the Internet's tradition of coming up with ways to condense question grammar. “Why is chess?” is another common formulation.
I was sold as soon as you said hex chess includes en passant
I'm not smart enough for regular chess, but I do love hexagons, so I bought Hive and just call it "bug chess" 🤣 maybe one day I can aspire to real hexagonal chess
Hive is wonderful, though. It's got a real "faerie-chess" vibe all on it's own.
Honestly I think buying all those hexes and building that board was worth it for how clean the video turned out.
Ooo, this would make for an amazing Battle Chess game on PC

Sounds like a fun coding project to make an AI for this. Wonder what the chess notation for this would be?
Can Shogi with hexagons?
Can Go, with hexagons?

That's a pretty hexcellent question you answered.
"That's a *hex*ellent question." ~ 1:00
Ha! Love it, Grey.
2:21 Sneaky Sting sighting! Love to see it.
Shouldn’t pawns’ capture move translate into diagonals in the same way as the bishops?

How could the humble Hexagon, the Bestagon, not be a true Chesstagon?

@2:21 I know a Sting replica when I see one! Cause I have one too! Does it glow blue when hexagons are near?

I would go see what is there now but very hard to find the location, I was on that street once tho.
I wish i knew Grey was looking for a chess board, i would have loved to make one out of wood.

so that's what was happening in your parking space, Grey... I just realized that must be where that huge board was at
