Super Shelter 2: Winter Camping Trip

  • Sam and I head out to the woods in late December to perfect the art of winter camping and make a super shelter. Along the way we do a lot of wood processing and cook up some good food.
This is Sam and my second time ever attempting this super shelter technique. We think we got the dimensions and tarps set up correctly this time to successfully build a super shelter. We set up camp, collect lots of fire wood, and cook up some tasty food from the warmth generated inside the super shelter.
Be sure to check out some of the other winter camping trips I go on!

Seeing two young lads out in the bush as opposed to staring at their devices on the couch is exhilarating! Good job fellas. For those of you offering constructive criticism? Thank you and for those just criticizing? Piss-off!

Here's some constructive criticism... Why don't you practice in the summertime, when your not freezing your nuts off. That way you can stand back, look, and redo anything you don't like. Taking your time and figuring out what works and what don't along the way. It's a lot easier to tie knots without gloves on also. lol Best wishes in the future

@@zettle2345......This is some great advice, that I hope these young kids take to heart. I agree with Geography in Action as well. Good too see them outdoors. I've been trained by the military and been camping for almost 30 years now, and I'm still learning new things.

      Drew Sanders
Nobody is born with wood/bushcraft or any other skill for that matter.
We try something and, if it doesn't work, we try something else.
Perseverance is what counts and most of the haters probably live in cities, have never been out of them, but feel qualified to criticise, because they've seen a few videos on utube.
      Armchair/computer warriors. Lol.

Next trip get a new saw blade for the bow saw. That old one is making you work too hard.

    • @bbarker5766
      @bbarker5766 7 років тому +2

Miss Glenda how about they learn to sharpen their blade instead of buying a new one?? It's nice to go out and buy whatever you desire but often times a resharpened blade (knife, saw, axe, hatchet, machete, etc) is better than a new one. I always sharpen new tools when I get them because they are made in a production line to be "just sharp enough" to sell in big retail stores.
The sharper the blade the easier the work!!

I'm gonna stop the video at 6:40 it's good yall are trying to collect wood but you NEED to insulate yourself from the ground. a sleeping pad & sleeping bag isn't enough. if you don't have conifers/pines in your area use anything you can to get your body off the cold ground. second yall are wasting time & energy sawing the firewood into small chunks. saw it into 6 ft sections and let the fire "cut" the wood for you.

You do realise smaller logs are more convenient to stack and feed a fire and maintain than six footers.
Using a pad and reflector is more than enough under a sleeping bag for insulation. Been doing it for years. Hell when I was in the service as a grunt it was a ground sheet with a sleeping bag over top, laying underneath a pup out in the snow. Warm enough!!
      Live and learn.

Nice video. Thanks for the gear rundown.
The main "roof" blue tarp needs to wrap around the front cross pole to avoid snow coming in and melt water from running in. I've used exactly this kind of shelter in the Alleghney National forest (NW Pennsylvania) backing the '70s. With a clear front "door" you get a lot of heat in the shelter with a reflector fire in front.

Next time maybe use logs for the fire. Lay down a log a foot or more thick lay 5-6 log on top of the one on the ground have the logs stick out over the log on the ground by foot & half to 2 feet. Have all the ends that are over the log touching at the other end have them about 2-3 apart. Then start a fire under the logs sticking over the log on the ground. It will save you from feeding the fire all night but you still will have to a few times. And you only do one cutting instead of cutting the whole log up. It may take you once or twice before you get down packed but you'll find less energy used. More time eating lol

Me and my friends always did survival weekends we called them where we would do similar things for 2-3 days. And just some recommendations, I saw a lot of people saying insulate yourself against the ground and that could not be more true, because all the body heat that comes off your back Is going straight to the ground. And make it way smaller.

Good job guys, it's so good to see young folk out in nature like that rather than glued to a computer/games console/ phone. Your shelter was so simple yet effective. Maybe you could use two logs to stack your dry fire wood just to keep it off the ground and not absorbing moisture. Also don't leave your axe laying around outside. Just constructive criticism not hating. You'll pick up more hints and tips from experience too. Good job guys 👍

Nice video a couple of things I would like to add, get a silky bigboy 2000 saw they are amazing and way faster and way less effort than a bow saw, also with that amount of plastic in the shelter make sure you have good ventilation especially in very cold climates.

Not to Bad ... But ... Do you know how a door frame is constructed w/ "King Studs" and Jack Studs"??? See you need to support that "ridge pole and not just tie it to the two trees. It could come down on you. So you need to support that ridge pole w/ a forked branch (of the right length) to support the ridge pole. If you angle it from the rear it will lock the ridge pole against the tree (ie: the King Stud) if done right you don't need the para cord. That was what I was taught in Boy Scout Wilderness Camp back in the 60-70's ... other then that "Good Job"

37 year old father of three here, I used to do the same kind of stuff back in the Welsh mountains when I was probably just a bit younger than you, I'd love to do the same with my kids but I live on a small densely populated island now, there's nowhere for us to practice fieldcraft, one day I'll find a little spot and get them off their damn computers, you take care lads and keen on keeping on, kind regards from Jersey, Channel Islands 🤝

nice going guys, looks like a fun little adventure.
i did wonder why you didnt add a few extra cross sections to your roof. i knew you would have to clear the snow off or risk the shelter breaking due to the weight of the accumulating snow. glad you noticed it start to pile up up there lol.
very cool heating system, even if you do need a lot more wood then if you had the fire inside some how.
i have seen some very clever improvised shelter stoves on youtube, one guy even made a mini stove made from some metal ducting, with a few feet of flexi dryer hose tied to stake as a chimney. you'd get away with collecting a lot less wood and still stay warm. anyway, thanks for sharing, i thumbs uped you and subscribed to your channel.

good work, done it several times, I generally make a frame and a space blanket "wall" opposite the shelter a couple feet back.. wind dictates size n height but at a bit of an angle you can hang clothes on the fire side .. I've gotten good results as it bounces some heat back to the shelters front and drys your gear. . just keep an eye on the gear as nylons will get damn near melting point if the fires hot.. stiff gloves suuuck.

some helpful hints, make a upside down fire later before you go to bed as this will burn about 5-6 hours so you don't have to get up to keep feeding the fire. Build a small fire in front of your upside down fire to cook on and preheat your shelter. Always keep extra wood near by and cut a little more than needed, you can also use this in the future. Good work.

Bear Grylls knife, it's what $60? you can get a Mora Bushcraft Black/Stainless for $40 then you can get one from the Craftline series for under $20. both will feather much better than that BG knife.

a lot useless things in the video(too much wood, then you turned wood into small size so you just spent a lot time for nothing, why you have barrier between fire and you guys)..but keep up you will learn
