- Les Stroud is stranded in the Norwegian mountains. This will prove to be the most difficult survival expedition of Les’s twenty-year career. With no food or water, no safety or camera crew, Les must haul 65 pounds of camera gear down the slick wet mountainside in the hope of finding shelter. Scavenging what he can from the barren landscape, exhausted and starving, Les draws on his years of experience and the will to survive in order to make it the full ten days.

Bear's tactics would likely get him and certainly the average Joe killed in mere days. After he's done filming his completely irresponsible and dumb decisions, he goes back to the resort and has steak and sits by a pool for the next day (bystanders have seen him doing this while filming an episode).
He's not a survivalist by any means. No doubt he was part of a top military program and is an EXTREMIST/adventurer, but not a survivalist. Stroud meanwhile has been a survival training expert for nearly 30 years and trains the military in survival skills. It really goes to show that most people want flashy "OMG WOW explosions!" on TV than anything with substance.
I love the implications of his half full peanut butter. Either they just grabbed whatever they had in the pantry for his rations, or bought fresh peanut butter only to intentionally scoop out most of the peanut butter. Both possibilities are hilarious to me.

I guess I’d die super fast then. I have excessive sweating due to hypothyroidism. I usually wake up drenched in sweat every morning lol

Yes he was the original. I watched him even before that, in the early 2000’s on OLN here in Canada. 20 years later and I’m still watching him. He was always honest and realistic. Unlike the Hollywood joke of man vs wild.

@J Kerr I spend a fair bit of time in Northern Norway. It's bitterly cold in Winter. For a survivalist, it makes no sense that he's forgotten the basics. He should have brought a large can of petrol, boots, dried foods and blankets. The hours of clear daylight, Suggests he's not as far north as I go. It all appears very staged.

Genuinely appreciate that Les goes against his own training and puts himself in a worse position in the hopes that if a viewer ever made the same mistake they’d recognize the consequences or at least have a strategy to remedy the situation
No pomp and frill, just survival. Seen him get excited to stumble on a rusted (but working) lighter and that made his day. He’s a real one we are lucky to have grown up with him teaching us real survival.

During my Army carreer I've spent many long weeks/months out in the elements. Jungles to Deserts. By far the worst is cold and wet! In an old M60A1 tank with a broke heater, in the cold, never ending rain. Just warm enough that it wouldn't snow. Snow is way better than cold rain!
We had great mountain type equip in the US Army, lay down in snow in our down sleeping bag. Bought the same from Army surplus for my kids camping in our wintertime climate. Bulky but light?

Something for viewers to remember: A sleeping bag's temperature rating is the temperature that it should keep you ALIVE, not the temperature it will keep you COMFORTABLE... vast difference!
I actually got a good reminder of that when I was buying a sleeping bag for a hiking trip. The guy who was in charge of the hiking section came to ask if I needed any advice and I asked him about the temp ratings. he just said "Yeah they are technically good for that temperature but if you're not sure, pick one higher. It'll keep you alive longer if the situation turns bad."
Or just buy the sleeping bag with the most goose feathers and you good.
Still always good to have an emergency blanket too so you could wrap yourself in it before getting into the sleeping bag.
@@MrShnazer until it gets wet, then you freeze. The new synthetic fills feel a lot like goose down but are a little cheaper and still insulate when wet.

I'm from the south and I always have my sleeping bag and a few things in the trunk I cannot imagine living anywhere that cold and not keeping a winter kit in your car at all times
Agree. I live in Norway - always have thermo hunting bag; fire kit; med kit; woollen hats gloves; cooking kit etc etc - just never know when you need it.

I travel all over the country for work. I’ve carried a bug out kit for years because of this man. Last year I was in TX for their big storm. Les was my man that trip!
What makes Les Stroud the real deal is he is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about teaching survival skills. He makes it so everyone can easily learn what he’s teaching. Not saying what he does is easy because it is not but he’s the real deal for sure!
I’ve got a pretty well stocked survival kit in my car. Extra clothes, plastic bottles, fire starting materials, tools. It’s mainly because I haven’t cleaned my car out since fidget spinners were a thing and not because I’m a responsible adult.

MrBallen has just told a true story on his channel about a family that found themselves exactly in this same situation on a very remote mountain road in Oregon. It didn't go well for the family, at least not for the father - he was already weakened by lack of food and warmth by the time he left his wife and two young kids in the snowbound car to try to get help. But instead of going back, he went further along the mountain road, tried to make a short cut through the wilderness and perished. His family were luckily found by a SAR helicopter out looking for them and were saved, but the father waited for days on end before he went for help - during that time they had run out of fuel and food and he was physically exhausted even before he left. I would have gone back down the road as soon as I realised that we were stuck and that nobody else was coming along that road, but of course in hindsight that's easy to say.

I remember that. It was on bear camp road which gets a lot of snow during winter. Still don't know why they thought going that way was a good idea.
And in that situation staying with the car saved the wife and 2 kids, leaving the car cost the husband his life.
@@ray.shoesmith the SAR heli found the family because they saw the husbands footsteps and followed them back to the car, so no, him leaving saved them.
The road the family went down was closed for the season but vandals had torn the warning signs down 😢 Les did an episode on the tradegy and it for me was his most profound episode . Really stuck with me f personal reasons
This episode felt like playing "The Long Dark", you guys should check that game out, very realistic survival simulation.
Waaay back when there was some sort of "controversy" over what survival show was best, Les was always The Man in my world....I couldn't believe some of the very entertaining conversations I had then! Now they have all fallen, and the Master is still doing what he does. Strong work, Survivorman. I highly value everything you have taught me. Thank you, for everything.

Sweet episode. By the way, I actually had to use a candle in a car for heat overnight. What I came up with was hanging my little frying pan over the candle flame, letting it heat up. Bigger surface area of the pan gave me a decent amount of heat. At least way more than just the candle flame. Actually worked well. And yeah, had two candles the size of the one he has here. Used one at a time, but heating up a larger piece of metal over it radiates much more heat.
Indeed it does work. You can actually keep warm if you have some tea candles, a small (maybe 4" diameter or so?) flower pot (like the little orangish ones) and some tiles. Stack some small tiles/pieces of tile on each side of the candle (all of which should be on a larger tile), and put the pot on top of the stacks, spanning the gap between, and have the little tea candle under the pot. Will heat it up and radiate that heat outwards. Works rather nicely

no joke, in my day when i wwas younger my mum n' dad used to have a small travle kit in there car. a basic 1 with road flares and thoes things u open up and put by your car. among a few other things... now with me older no i have everything in a get home bag with is about 90l just for 1 person. (tho its normaly just me anyway) i have far more shit thenthis guy did.. lol not a sleeping bag more like a quilt since i am a big guy with few cans of food bag of batts and alot more stuff..

I once spent the night in a car in winter with no real coat as I was dressed for clubbing. By morning I was hypothermic. The kicker is that as the car cooled it became a barrier to the exterior air which was actually warming due to incoming winds. But I thought I should try to "keep the heat in". I didn't realize it was atually warmer outside of the car than in!

I want reality I wanna see people learning what they have to do to survive when their ass is truly backed into a survival situation with nothing but their wits and mother nature to bail them out...

That's what I loved about the original 3 seasons of Survivorman way back when he was on TV. Looks like he decided to get back out there and reboot the old series, only add an extra 3 days to his survival misery this time. Used to be he only needed to last 7 days in the old TV series. That was a hell of a survival kit to keep in a car I think that’s more stuff that I have in my everyday driver
I practice your skills all the time with my brother. We have been winter camping with next to nothing, go into the wild with nothing but the clothes on our backs, and water in our packs. We arent as experienced as you so we take a little water and food with us. When we leave, we always clean up, and we always take cans we find out of the woods, because its a popular spot for offroaders and party animals. Always leave it cleaner than it was when we went out. Take care of dear Gaia, and she will take care of us. Thank you les, for making me how i am today.

You should watch him trying to make a fore in simulated artic slush and wind using a giant fan like an airboat would have and water hoses he couldnt get the wind blocked to start a fire. It was very intense and he cried because he failed. That was his mist precarious situation and the entire crew was there. Ive been watching this for close to two decades

When me and my brother used to get home from work around 7 or 8 pm from the oilfields we would unwind with a 40 oz of whiskey or 24 of canadian beer and watch the survivorman series 1. I dont indulge anymore , neither does he. Still watching survivorman

I've been wondering, has Les ever been accidentally found by anyone while filming the shows?
I think I remember the dog sled episode and Alaska being some of the few times he was found.
He mentions in the commentary of the Amazon episode that one point - while filming - he saw he was being watched by a native elder, who just wanted to make sure Les was doing alright!
And in the Polar Arctic episode commentary, he also mentions that a local Inuit kept watch on him through a long distance scope of his gun for much of the shoot (which is not unreasonable in deep Polar Bear country)
He was found by some fishermen on like the second day of filming or something in Alaska, ended up having to go to court or something because they had inadvertently picked a protected wildlife area to get lost in, or maybe the authorities misunderstood where he was actually at. But basically he had to turn down the fishermen for rescue since he had only just begun filming.
A friend of mine that grew up in Ontario said they saw him making shelters in the bush a couple times while sledding, not sure if he was filming at that point yet

Always loved watching Les Stroud. He is doing real survival, not sleeping in hotels like other people 🤣
Your advice is always the best and most realistic of all the survival shows I have ever seen. So many other ones require some insane physical ability or ridiculous scientific knowledge most people would never figure out. I, like most, could do what you do and that's the most important learning tool.
The entire Surivorman series is a go-to for me when I want to just put something on and relax. I've watched every episode many, many times.
I think the Norway two part is my favorite of all of it that aired on TV.
It’s generally not safe to sleep/camp in a car with the windows closed and with the engine running. Many people die doing that..
I think the most important part of this scenario wasn’t addressed, trying to free your car before you decide you’re ‘trapped’. You have a hatchet and are in a forest, and can easily cut branches and sticks, put them under your tires for traction and try to free yourself first.
I thought the same thing. Step 1 for me would be to get the car unstuck. At least from its current position. In that amount of time you could have dug out most of the snow that stopped your car from moving. However with the amount of gas left in his car I don't think it would have helped very much if he tried to get unstuck.

I had a similar experience 180km from any towns on a seasonal rd that's open from june to dec. This happened a day before closure . I took a wrong turn the and ended up going down a steep spur ,there hadn't been traffic and there's was 12 " of snow on the rd, once the rd started dropping, I felt the "oh sh*t I can't turn around. It did flatten out but there was big snow drifts . After sleeping through a windy snowy night ,the drifts had grown. I shoveled around the car.jacked it up and pulled the front calipers off and tied them out of the way to make room for rope that was to be used for chains , I also did my best at clearing the snow up of hill. This worked.I did have ski touring equipment and overnight winter camping gear and I did think of skiing out and getting the car in the spring. The only mistake I noted in this video. He didn't melt snow on his engine or using body heat for drinking water. I'll watch part 2 and see if he's still drinking beer....I'm joking!!

He could of made extra foot beds for his boots to change out and dry in you armpits while traveling

My luck, as soon as I finished tearing my car to pieces looking for useful items, a friendly snowplow driver would roll up right then and offer me a lift..

One thing, that NO survival show talks about is PANIC. If your by yourself or with others PANIC is what happens to everyone. And how you deal with that decides wether or not you come back.

I lived in my van over a winter once. How I kept warm was making sure I pulled the cover over my head. Your exhaling gases are warm and really helps to keep you warm. Sometimes it wasn’t enough, but 95% of the time it was the best thing I could do. Have tried the candle but since it was a big van, all it did was spit out a little light and was a fire hazard so I only tried it like, 4 times maybe. Best time of my life if I’m being honest.
Yes. You feel fully alive, scared to death yet completely at peace too. Totally free somehow. Hard to describe.

@Thru-VIKING I haven't seen part 2 so I don't know about the cabin, but if you are traveling through remote areas or live in rural areas having a small toolkit in the car with survival tools is incredibly common. I live in an urban area now but I still have a first aid kit, an extra set of clothes (which has been a lifesaver on road-trips once or twice), a jump starter that doubles as a USB power pack, some basic repair tools (enough to at least change a battery), a blanket (to protect the back seats when hauling stuff), a flat tire kit, and a knife. And after bingeing some episodes realize I should probably add a matchbook or two.

Man, I remember the Norway episodes. The end of Part 2 is what always reminds me to check the expiration dates for emergency supplies when I head out on longer trips.
U have a beer can, u cut the bottom of then put 3 to 5 holes on the side at the bottom an one on the top, put the candle inside the can so the flame pulls cold air in from the bottom and hot air comes out the top what will heat up better plus the can gets hot aswell
I've been living in my car for 4 years now. Winters are definitely a challenge.
I’ve experienced a few stretches of living out of my car through a few winters, so not full winters. Also camped out during winters too. Two cheaper end sleeping bags help tremendously. Good luck, be safe.

Also;
If you are ever stuck in a similar situation in a car, if you have the means, block off sections of the car with jackets or a blanket or some other clothing to create a smaller space whereupon the heat from your body and breath (and maybe the candle!) can have a greater effect.
You'll have less cold leeching the heat since the blankets/jacket etc. work as somewhat of insulators.
Food for thought
When i lived in Scandinavia i always had a spade, warm clothes, extra food, a fishing rod and standard survival gear in the boot.
A spade is good for digging a car out! And if not a pole at least some fishhooks.

If you have to leave your vehicle to seek rescue etc., leave the car unlocked and leave a visible note with your info and intentions.

My car currently has a bottle of water, blanket, foldable shopping dolly, a pair of rain boots, reusable shopping bags, face masks, sunglasses. I rarely wander more than 5 miles from the house, I’d just walk home.
It may look silly but so would my feet with less toes XD
Even after watching you do this for years/decades it still leaves me with a sense of awe, seeing you do these things and take these chances... it's genuinely inspiring. There's no better qualification in your "industry" then doing it a long time and still being alive ::)

Ive lived in the snow belt of New York my whole life. The first thing my dad taught me about driving in the winter was to never have less than a half tank of gas, keep food (granola bars, trail mix, jerky) water, and blankets in the trunk. Along with a shovel and some kitty litter. Obviously I'm more likely to be found a lot sooner in a populated area, but these tips could save my life if I end up off the road somewhere.
99% of the viewers have no idea just how STRONG both mentally AND PHYSICALLY Les truly is!!! As an avid back packer and outdoor survivalist of 20 years myself, I am astonished at the sheer mental fortitude and display of endurance and stamina Les Stroud shows while starving in the process. This man is the alpha of alpha males. I just wish there was a way for people to truly understand what this man goes through.
He goes through it because he's made of it. That means he's also enjoying it. Cheers!

Hey couldn’t you have put up garbage bag behind you to cut off “heating” back part of wagon/hatchback?
A garbage bag is basically no insulation at all. Any heat it "blocks" is probably completely negligible.
At least it's a thought that's headed in the right direction no?

That's actually not a bad idea. It could work if you remembered to insulate under the front seats. That's where it's ALWAYS cold.

Didn't see a snow shovel or any traction aid (at least a couple handfulls of coarse sand) in your car kit, Les. Being able to get your car unstuck and drive out of trouble would have saved a lot of people over the years. Old school tire chains or some kind of modern light weight tire chain would also be an extremely good idea.
He said that there were a few items not included that he would have liked to have.
Depending on how much gas was left it wouldn’t be worth the energy to try to get it unstuck.

To start out with you don't drive up on a bandened road in the winter time. Number 2 you do whatever takes to turn the car around and you drive back on the tracks you came in on before it snows any more...unless your a dam fool you get the hell out of there as fast as you can...
