In Mexico it is believed that Mexican players who go to the MLS only do it for money If you are young and you go to the MLS then that means you no longer have the desire to compete and just live the good life The exception was Carlos Vela, he is the only player who continued to be called up to the Mexican national team despite being in the MLS. Canada played mostly MLS players in Copa and getting as high as they did shows MLS has quality players that can compete with the world best. The Canadian core are or went through the system are MLS players, but 2.
The growth of Canada from where its players pool was prior to MLS and MLS academies to now is nothing short of remarkable. They did not have a goal from open play in three straight Gold Cups from 2011-2015, and failed to get a win in the 2013 and 2015. They lost to Martinique. In WC qualifying, they failed to get to the Hex from the 2002 cycle through the 2018 one. At this point, it is a league with proper professional faculties and training/development/recovery. It has coaches who aren't just mercenaries taking any old check. It offers the combination of pay and access to non-domestic players that has allowed the level of play in the league to be pretty good. It does not actively hold back players from developing, and it just seems silly given the situation with Canada where that opinion is still so commonplace.
