*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*
That’s all I ever used in the 60s/70s except for my little UL spinner. I have a new NOS one now just for fun. I had a Penn rod with the big wooden handle so after you casted you could pull your hand out of the way of the crank. Nice 👍 video!
Beautiful outfit.Heartwarming video. You know current tackle salesmen will tell you there is no way you will catch anthying with that these days. Cheers from Australia.
I just picked up a Penn 109 Peer with red slide plates and the dual green spinning handles, it barely and I meant BARELY even turned when we picked it up. Took it home, used some WD40, and now it'll spin for a good 3 or 4 seconds if you you give it a good turn. Slick as glass. My buddy and I enjoyed taking it apart and fixing it so much were going to go get another bait caster today to do the same. Thank you for uploading this video, it's cool to see the smaller ocean reels being used for a more.. inland type of angling. Cheers and tight lines.
I have the 109 and a Mag 10, which is the 109 with a higher speed retreive. They cast very well. Mostly I use them for jigging for blackmouth on the salt chuck, where you cast upstream against the running tide, then bounce it along the bottom, then repeat. Thos young kings are layin down at about 90ft and really go for a Point Wilson Dart (3 - 6oz depending on the tide). Oh, and yeah, they are superb trolling reels. Pretty impressed with that 1/4oz load, though.
Haha, that's funny. Without a true free spool, I don't think I'd find much use for a 109. I do like my Penn 10's, I have a bunch of them for trolling walleye.
Buenas! Soy de Bs As Argentina.
I have a 109 but it has to reel handles and the cranking noise it makes I thought something was broke in it but after your video I guess it's what an old reel does
Mike, I like what you do with those reels. I don't recall ever using a Penn conventional in fresh water, except once when my father took us to opening day of trout season with our fluke rods :) But seriously, I am encouraged by your example to explore some of the bigger bodies of water around Philly for flatheads with a Penn 10. Do you do any magging on those reels?
Yes, I've magged a Jigmaster, a Surfmaster, a 259 Live Bait Caster, and the little 109 in this vid. The Penn 10 is a killer catfishing reel...and comes magged stock! here's a link to how the 109 was magged: alantani.com/index.php?topic=18306.0
Help...tengo un carrete penn peer 109 que me regalaron desmontado pero no encuentro ningún video en youtube para montarlo si subierais algún video montandolo os lo agradecería un saludo españa
This of course is many years later after this post but I am wondering about what weight you are putting on your Carolina rig? I tried using my 109 to fish hair jigs and power grubs with a 1/8 oz big head for crappie. Lets say casting is pretty crummy. Wondering if the Penn 109 has a sweet spot for best casting?
How old is this reel you? And you should get the shakespeare ats conventional reel or level wind reel it's like 40 bucks I want to see how good it performs
Mike what is the magnet you used and the source? I have two similar 109 set ups and would like to just copy what you have done vs experiment (in general i need less time tinkering and more time fishing)

500 what?
Mu step father used to fish with these all the time in Texas back in the 70's. Everything from bass to small shark.
Nice! I have a 109 with the short Bakelite green handles - I have had it for 40 years.
Thing is gorgeous. Bought one, probably last forever, made in USA.
Glad to see the old dog still being used. I have a 209 and a Jigmaster 500 that I use for rock fish and salmon.

I wish someone would make a video on how to cast some of these older reels
A lot of practice and some patience

must have been a Penn screw up, the 109 is the only knucklebuster in the 9 series. I agree I have a 10 and a 210 among other of my Penns
Just ordered me an old reel to restore and bring back as new love old quality
That music....I was waiting for you to say "go ahead punk, make my day" and it's all over!
It turns out that most fish do not care what your rod or reel looks like, and most of fishing marketing is a total scam.
So cheerful.

Love those reels.
Sweet reel, nice job.
Nice casting lesson fur me and cool music too 😎
what can I dot do I won’t have a bird nest when I cast it can u pls tell me
Slow the spool down with your thumb just before your bait hits the water.
because you have imagination. seems that many lack in this trait. nice 109 there
I’ve been throwing big swimbaits on my no 9 and 109 befor big baits where cool
I use this for channel catfishing it's a very good reel
Beautiful lake
Hay bud great video thanks 🐟
Reel nice fish you got there :)
I just bought a 309 at a yard sale. He had a 209 which I think I needed more than the 309
Daniel Guajardo have both, 209 you can use for practically everything
Man you should have grabbed the both of them if cheap enough 🐟
309 is a lot of reel.
I have a 109 but it has to reel handles and the cranking noise it makes I thought something was broke in it but after your video I guess it's what an old reel does
Wish they still made the Mag 10 great for musky fishing

I have a BUNCH of 109s,210s and 310s
I got 209 309

I think it was a 3/8 oz. sinker.
1/4 oz. and up
very cool! what kind of rod are you using? wanna get me one of those :D greetings from holland.
The rod is a Browning Silaflex.
thank you so much :) i like the old stuff
Penn 109
are you using the clicker? while you cast?
Oh no...it wouldn't even cast with the bait clicker on...what you're hearing is the anti-reverse dog.
@@mikeshaver1288 is that clicking noise able to turn off or no? That noise would be a deal breaker
Is there a clicking when you reel in?
I troll in the mid west for anything that will bite a lure so do you think a penn 109 would be worth buying as a trolling reel?
hmm I bought this Penn 40 years ago, now you have it?
Coffee can !! Cool post man
How old is this reel you? And you should get the shakespeare ats conventional reel or level wind reel it's like 40 bucks I want to see how good it performs
Are the penn rods used for saltwater fishing?
Yup
Yolo
Classic old school. I have a couple of those old girls. Best reels ever when you get the hang of using them.
Nice
Mike what is the magnet you used and the source? I have two similar 109 set ups and would like to just copy what you have done vs experiment (in general i need less time tinkering and more time fishing)
Check eBay...there are gazoodles of magnets on there. I used some that are 3mm x 13mm...anything close to that size should be fine.
thanks!
Maybe a Penn peerless #9 would be better. Smaller reel
Why do you have the clicker on? You'll cast further and have less racket if you turn the clicker off.
What are you talking about? The clicker ain't on...it wouldn't even cast with the clicker on! That is the anti-reverse you're hearing.
Dude I can’t find this reel anywhere
I have one and I will sell it to you for $45
@@laurasamuelson7433 with shipping? I'll take it asap
All over ebay...
can one cast an old penn 49 like that
if they have the will to
I don't believe the knuckle busting 109 to be the best reel for bass. I prefer my abu 5000.
I don't think the fish knows or care....😅
Penn 109? Are they still available?
Lots of used ones on eBay, but Penn still makes the 209 and 309.
You can turn the licker off
The clicker is off. The click you are hearing is the antireverse.
👍🏻
I Had One Like This,I Used It For Big Lures...Wish I Still Had It😢
Wirms are cheap
