    I think, based on the scene, that Patrick made her focus on something else, in this case naming the presidents, so that she loses focus on the position of the cups, so that when he asks her to open her eyes, she, by instinct, look for a second at the cup that she had to remember. If you look closely at the scene, when Lisbon opens her eyes, for a second, she looks at the table, and I think he uses that reflex to locate the cup.

    I think that Patrick Jane asked the question about the Beatles because no Mentalist is going to take a risk without having outs, and besides, that scene is only comprising of Barnum Statements, also that question threw the fake psychic off, because he didn't know how to explain that.

    • @Roman-gy7pr
      @Roman-gy7pr 3 роки тому +9

      Actually, just to make it clear. The other guy is not a psychic, he is an agent from the CBI (same bureau Jane works in). Jane wanted the files on Red John and Boscow (that is the other guy) told him that he is not a cop, he is a victim and a fake (or something like that). To make the point clear, Boscow did the "cold reading" based on what he knew from Jane's files. Jane asked him "Who is my favorite Beatle?" to let him know it's not working because he knows the tricks.

      @@Roman-gy7pr I know he is not a psychic because he was using strategies known to most mentalists; Barnum Statements. And what he was doing might count as hot reading, because he is getting information from Patrick's files.

    For TV, they were using the Handles of the cups but, if I were doing it, I would use the Printed makers mark on the bottom of the cups. these are not printed in the same direction on every cup, so the handles would be in facing different directions, making it look more random. The more difficult to read, the more random and honest this trick will look to the observer and the Target! and because only You know the secret, even if the bottom is difficult to read, even a Single letter, if lined up with the others, will make this trick WORK!

      Bicycle cards, specially the Seconds that don't have obvious issues, have some slight misalignment, where one of the edges is thicker than the other. It's systematic, the whole deck has the same pattern (at least every deck I've seen with that problem). And it's subtle, people don't see it, but you can train to recognize it and get very fast at it. I've used that way to many times to guess a card, by laying some random cards then when the spectator is not watching I turn the deck 180 and make them chose any card, then I do some other stuff to fluff it up and make the spectator exchange locations sideways between the cards. I can see it from like 3 feet away no problem. And it's like having a marked deck, well it is a marked deck of sorts, so you can do miracles with it.
      Btw, it should also work with a stripper deck, but honestly as I have a couple of standard decks with that "issue", I never tried with a stripper. Hope my wife doesn't read my comments.

    Very good, Spidey.
    As for the Beatles question - my guess would be that not only is it a complete distraction, but because they can't get any information out of you; no matter what they say, it won't go in their favour. So, I guess it puts them on the spot; and they can't give a definitive answer.

      That’s exactly right! Concrete facts are the enemy of cold reads 😊

  • @sapach1406
    @sapach1406 3 роки тому +36

    I think that the guy was cold reading Patrick Jane right. So when Jane asked him about his favorite Beattle, there would be 2 options: getting it right or getting it wrong. If the the guy got it right, then Jane could simply say "Wrong, I hate the Beattles". If he got it wrong, then the guy backed himself into a corner. Either way Jane turned the tables from a 75% win towards Jane, into a 100% win towards Jane. And by the guy failing in his Beattles guess, then that would be enough evidence into put the guy's initial cold read into question. At the end of the day it would go something like this: "If your cold read was right, then you would answer the Beattles question correctly; but since you got the Beattles question completely wrong, then that means that your initial cold read was completely wrong."

    • @brianware8934
      @brianware8934 3 роки тому +1

      That’s the idea. Sapach even said it. There’s no out for the cold reader, so there’s no recovering, period. He’d HAVE to make a definitive statement with no outs and Jane could turn it on him by saying he’s wrong no matter what the cold reader says. Think of it like this: a cold reader is a fisherman using nothing but dynamite and matches with no other way of catching fish. They’re just tossing it in the water after lighting it and hoping they stun some fish. Jane asking him for something that specific where there are no outs for the cold reader, you just took away the matches and the dynamite. There’s no recovering from that, so he just heads back to shore, done for the day.

If you guess wrong, you don't have an out for such a specific failure, if you guess right - I'll assume you guessed and can totally deny it if I want to be a jerk, and there's no way you can prove you guessed right if I don't cooperate".

    Awesome video. I suspect the Beatles question is just about breaking his train of thought it's hard to continue in a stream of consciousness address if you have to engage your brain to remember who the Beatles were and figure out which one PJ may have liked. As for Lisbon, her posture was such that it's possible he was reading that as the scene starts she is adjusting herself into position and her head is canting slightly - couple that with the handle option and you have a pretty good chance of knowing which mug was used

    That "Beatles" thing is such a brilliant trick. It suddenly makes the other guy question on at least a subconscious level if he understands ANYTHING about Patrick Jane. It disrupts his flow, basically overloads his circuits and establishes a fundamental doubt, even if meaningless.

  • @nzhook
    @nzhook 3 роки тому

    So the favourite Beatle question works with numerous things, firstly it's a dead stop - when someone is on a roll throwing something in front of them forces them to lose concentration and stumble. It's also a direct question - making a bunch of observations is easy enough but answering a direct question is tougher because there's no starting point for getting the read. It's also multiple choice - essay answers allow for interpretation of the listener but answering one of a limited number opens the possibility that it could obviously be the wrong answer and it's hard to back away from looking like the fool, especially if there is no correct answer - maybe Jane doesn't like the Beatles at all.

  • @roxylindholm5179

    7:07 I think most people run into the trap, where they felt like being read but they aren't. I think because the guy who was reading Patrick obviously has conclusions about his personality. So in order to guess which of the Beatles Patrick liked, he would use the traits he thinks Patrick has to match up with a particular Beatle. But, obviously everyone is different and therefore, Patrick's personality would be such that one attitude of his would match one Beatle and another attitude another Beatle. We rarely ever use hesitation or speaking patterns for anything. Quite simply because that hesitation can be due to 1000 things. Asking what's my favorite Beatle is akin to Caesar Milan, snapping his fingers at a dog, first it derails the course of the questioning since it is so different than what was being talked about., It would catch someone off guard, and the Beatles are very widely know, that person, may not have even thought who there favorite Beatle is, and start to rationalize who their Beatle is, then realize that wasn't the question, but who is "my" favorite Beatle. Then the person would naturally flow from thinking who their favorite is to now, how would I figure out who yours is? By then, it's too late, the original line of questioning and having the upper hand is gone and that person looses traction and the edge of being the aggressor or dominator in the conversation. How did I do?

    Sorry. I couldn't find my original comment. A pattern interrupt in NLP is basically just an unexpected question that throws the other person off their current train of thought. I suspect Jane did this because he doesn't seem to like when other people mind read him. This is evident in several other episodes. He does get more playful about it later though.

    To be honest at first I was thinking about the handles at start, but yea! You reminded me the head tilting think, which I have used a couple of years ago and completely forget about it! Well, I would think if he would be an actual mentalist would combine the two, but in this case I think it was just time misdirection and to confuse her with a bunch of meaningless information so it wouldn't be obvious. Just imaging she hides it, you turn back and just grab the mug, she would notice the difference, because she was ready. You know how it is, at the start of first part of the trick they want to burn you, the audience are not stupid, no matter how good you are or fast your moves will not be invisible. That is why we need misdirection, otherwise you would just do the effect right away.

    • @SpideyHypnosis

    Beatles
    Jane asked the question to throw the other person off balance while the person was cold reading which would make the situation in Jane's favour, as Jane can lie if the cold reader gets it right or Jane can tell the person that it was a trick question as he does not like any of The Beatles which would make the cold reader leave and not continue with his cold reading as he might feel that reading Jane would go wrong, if he intended on continuing after the question.
    That's my thought.

    It's hard to say something specific on the spot using cold reading.
    You can fish out delicate or personal information using cold reading but it takes time. You ease into that information. So in the case of Beatles .....it is a specific information with no context. I can guess but I can't fish. There's no time for me to set up a way to get back on my feet incase I get it wrong. There's no starting point for me to put my nose in. Any specific information a psychic says to you.... It starts from a generalized foggy area which gets clearer and clearer with each step. This sort of principle makes it hard to say something like your fav Beatles member, pretty hard if not impossible.
    Atleast that's what I think it is. I present this reasoning cause I was trying cold reading after reading a book ( full facts of cold reading by Ian Rowland, this is most beginner friendly book I know off) I started trying it out almost immediately and this type of personal questions were the ones that stumped me a lot.
    I have to say tho, I got such questions cause I presented myself wrong. Instead of a smartass who can guess all your personal info..... A dude who can "read some parts of your aura" flies better.

    i believe that this kind of mentalist just says random things that apply to almost every person . Guessing the beatle is hard because it may be a random choice , a choice based on a memory or a feeling , or it may be not a choice at all if a person doesnt listen to this kind of music . Finding the right beatle requires the exact reason why patric chose him at the first place . And i also believe that there arent many peaple who would doubt about metalists ability to read minds after he would be correct to the first guess so this may make mentalist feel unprepared , uncomfortable and increase the possibility of making a mistake .

    Probably a dumb question, but why couldn't the cold reader just say "I don't know"? I have not seen the full scene so maybe I am missing something, but he never seemed to claim to be able to read detailed thoughts. Wouldn't a seemingly honest statement like "I don't know. I'm having trouble nailing down such a specific thought" work just fine? Or was the point of the scene that the cold reader was trying to prove a point and got in over his head?
    In a performance, that also could lead to a more traditional mentalism performance with billets or something to reveal the exact answer. Although if the participant was clearly trying to throw off the reader I wouldn't see a reason to continue the read anyway.

    • @SpideyHypnosis
      @SpideyHypnosis  3 роки тому +3

      Yep in a performance we would probably have them write it down. Your question about “I don’t know” it’s also sort of part of the answer. It shifts the control of the situation from the person doing the read to the person being read. The reader in this case was very arrogant.

      @@SpideyHypnosis : I think the "answer" you're looking for is in there too, though. The editing of that scene is clearly intentional, and they put in that overhead shot with all the handles of the mugs in almost the same direction to show us something.
      Personally, I'd guess he was using all of the techniques at once, both for in-character and out-of-character reasons. In-character, it provides redundancy if one of them fails for some reason and it also provides lots of "if he did it this way, why did he do that?" distractors. The distractors are also useful out-of-character, and having the "tells" in place for a lot of techniques means that it's a little more likely for viewers to get the "Oh, I see how he did that!" reaction -- which obviously they want people to have since they're putting in the tells at all and using plausible tricks.

    Actually, if you look at the mugs before and after you will see that the one the money was under was the SECOND from PJ's left (NOT the 3rd). As you say, there are a number of ways this trick could be done, but since this is a TV show it wasn't actually done in any of them - it was just scripted! I think that’s honestly a continuity error in the filming. Because look at where that cup is positioned and look at the cup he lifts to reveal the money. He goes straight forward. Whos my favorite beatle, I assume works in the same way Derren Brown mentioned he has diffused a tense situation by cutting them off and posing an unrelated question like “these walls aren’t 4 feet high? In europe walls are much smaller...etc”. Throwing the person off, cutting off their train of thought.

    • @SpideyHypnosis
      @SpideyHypnosis  3 роки тому

      That’s one reason but there’s a reason that a question like that is very effective against a cold/warm reader

  • @BrooksMoses
    @BrooksMoses 3 роки тому +1

    Randomly, I think there's a reasonable comeback for the "Who's my favorite Beatle?" question: Rather than addressing the question, immediately talk about why they're asking that question and what they're trying to do with it and what that says about their thoughts. "That's a fascinating question. You don't think this is real, and you're trying to trap me with a question that you can deny the answer to...."
    It should be particularly useful to emphasize the "this is an intentional trap" part of the response, because then you can be directly responding to that and dismiss the fact that it's a question at all, and thereby shift the focus away from the fact that you never give them an answer to it while you talk at some length about it.

Because it's portrayed differently across all media so I feel like average people don't know what's true if that makes sense. Like one movie says it works like this and another says it works like that so people watching magic shows can't be like "oh he did this, I know how it works. That's how they do it in every movie." Like, there are simply no cluess on which you could take the 25% or whatever the chances to do a cold-reading guess without using some additional tricks? It's just not possible to guess it right on the spot which is what can stop the "reading person" in their tracks for a moment at least. With the cold reading, I also thought it would be a kind of pattern interupt or doing the unexpected. Derren Brown describes an incident where he distracted an aggressive person, which made sense, as does this one. I've done it successfully on multiple occasions (once before seeing either of these) with aggressive husbands of domestic abuse victims I was helping. The fellow was on a roll, accusing me of influencing his wife (she'd asked for help) and presumably talking to me as he talked to her. Simply bringing in something that made him stop to think broke his momentum and allowed me to walk out of their home with his wife without any drama (I'm a menopausal woman - getting aggressive wasn't an option). I interpreted it as he didn't know what to make of me, and we walked out before he figured it out. Then I saw Derren's video and was like well, that was what I did...
