    Hey thanks for watching! If you enjoyed this episode, check out the entire series here: ua-cam.com/play/PLnSGJ0XeWUB-JP6qnIX7_QCkxcQjmzUvK.html and if you took something away from these, it would be amazing if you shared these to other artists, both aspiring and pros alike! Thanks!

    Criminal how well made this is. You could tell me you were a videographer and editor filming someone else’s art process and I would believe you, it’s that well done. And this is so relatable. I haven’t worked in the big 2, just some comics and animations to promote a brand as the day job, but I can’t believe I GET to do art for a living so I say yes to absolutely everything, because I’m scared this opportunity will disappear. And so I haven’t gone fishing or done my normal hobbies in I don’t know how long.

      Thanks so much, Brandon! Filming and editing this has become a passion of mine and is an amazing creative outlet using the same storytelling skills as a comic book artist. The tech aspect can be a bit mich though. But I feel ya. Freelancers greatest fear is saying no and never being asked again. But legit, my daughter once did an imitation of me and my catch phrase was "I need to go to work" lol I knew then I needed to make some changes. Also life really does inform your art. You come at it fresh. Anyways get that fishing session in soon!

    hits close to mine, especially with a family and a baby, and I haven't even had a major 'break-in' with the big 2 comic publishers, and it feels like I can't. Thanks for the inspiration

      Hey, yeah it's a lot to juggle. Between pursuing something and being with the fam. I'd say just do you, let them come to you.

    Great video. As always! Your standard for producing these is off the roof! This subject is very special for me. I'm not in the industry. I already rock a lot of grey hairs and it's so hard to find enough time but also enough balance to make it work and not go crazy while doing it.

    I'm an artist but also a full-time 9-5 Sr. Director of Operations at a company and I needed to hear this. I feel like finding that balance in life is not exclusive to artists. It includes all those who have a job with blurry boundaries. I really appreciate this video and I can honestly say I'm a work in progress too. Thanks for this Francis! P.S. Been a fan of your work for years!

      I think you said it perfectly. Anyone who's job blurs the lines of boundaries... the job always takes over. Specially when you're in the right "season" career wise. Thanks again for watching, Zach!

    Hey! I've finally had a chance to watch your videos. I enjoy your "how to videos" as they are very well done but I really enjoyed this WORK/LIFE Balance. This one really hit me. I'm a storyboard artist and you cover a lot of the things I've had to deal with in my work. Nice to hear someone else talk about that experience. Please, keep these coming!

    Excellent video, Francis. This is something I struggle with a lot. In fact, I'm writing this on a weekend, as I prepare to start a full work day haha. At the moment, I don't have a family or anything, but seeing you able to make the balance work as best as possible, with all of your home obligations, it's definitely inspiring. Thanks for making this.

      Yeah its tough man... the boundaries I set are meant to keep me in the game longer but also to be more than just an artist and fulfill other aspects of me as a human being, from a partner to a dad, to a son. Gotta be all those things you know?

    I just love these videos, i'm working hard to make my way into the industry, i'm still giving very small steps and sometimes i get frustrated because of the time is taking me and the lack of opportunities given to me, but watching your videos really helps me to find some peace and understand a bit better this beautiful comic business. Keep up the good work!

    What a video man, great topic, appreciate the honesty, you genuinely bring up some issues that are hardly talked about when you become an artist (and a dad!) I find myself doubting and wondering and rethinking as you mentioned, also, you are like 3 videos away from becoming a filmmaker! haha😂 kudos man!

      Yeah it always feels like you're either letting work or family down. Can't please them all. But in the end you kinda know what really matters. So long as you get enough done to pay the bills, you know where you need to spend more time at. And thanks! Still a lot to learn in this medium and I'm enjoying the ride.

    Man, this episode really hit home for me, thanks Francis! For your pace, it looks like you are doing one page of pencils and inks per day? I wish I was that fast, I definitely would love to work toward that. For your environments, do you ever use 3d models or sketchup, or is it mostly from your head and photo ref? Thanks again for the great episode!

    • @FrancisManapulArt
      @FrancisManapulArt  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, Jeremy! Yeah it's a good pace, but for this deadline just wasn't fast enough. I don't really use any models for backgrounds, I find them too time consuming and cumbersome. I tend to just make it up. I look at reference every now and then just to see different types of windows or little details to make them more real. But I find it easier to just make stuff up.

    • @jeremydelagarza8317

      @@FrancisManapulArt Awesome, thanks so much for the feedback Francis! Makes total sense, I tend to get lost in reference at times and am always trying to find a more efficient method to backgrounds, etc.
