  • In art there's this old adage often said, and said for good reason: It took me years of drawing many lines in order to learn how to draw fewer. In this video I discuss the concept of minimalism in comic book art and how you can use it to make your art stand out.

A lot of artists when they're new use lots of detail to hide their deficiencies because when you do less and go for a graphic style your mistakes or lack of skill will stand out more. That's not to say busy artstyles are unskilled or hiding mistakes I'm just saying that you can use it to hide lack of skill. Your graphic style definitely pops and stands out. My two favourite artstyles for comics are the graphic style(when done well) like yours and then the very loose, messy, inky look which is the complete opposite.

Exactly. I think what young artist took away from the art back in the 90's was only surface level and didn't quite study why the artists they liked drew this or that. It's almost like misinterpreting a movie or an album. Usually once they take a step back and have greater clarity young artists discover who used details correctly and who doesn't. Also I feel like you're in my mind, as I also really enjoy unrestrained loose lines. That takes a different kind of self control not unlike using a graphic style. Different look, but I believe it's the same principles.

I just wanna say I became a fan of your work for exactly this reason. I come from the early 90's super detailed world and still love it but the emotion and movement you got from your minimal lines during your flash run made me a Manapul guy!

At the Kubert school, this is the advice I was given regarding my female figures and faces! Ever since then I have been experimenting in minimalism even though I was inspired by Gary Frank for a long time, now I look at more abstract artist like Clayton Henry's art for example etc. Lot's to be learned from any and every artist it seems!

    • @FrancisManapulArt
      @FrancisManapulArt  4 роки тому +1

I love Gary and Claytons work! The key is to to remember that to do details AND minimalism well, you're still required to have strong fundamentals. So both styles basically require the same amount of knowledge and where you go from there is more of a personal choice.

Awesome Video and explanation Francis. This helps me understand why your detective run feels so much different from your early work. I'll have to check out Mike Ringo's Flash run.

Yeah man. Every run I've had looks pretty different. Flash was inked almost entirely in brush to keep fluidity. Detective was nib inking to give it a scratchier look.

I feel bad I'm just finding this video now. I enjoy your takes on different artist topics because they're so relatable. I listen and I'm like *nodding* "yeah, and don't you hate it when this is going on too"... Maybe it's the misery loves company principle but it's nice knowing professionals experience the same concerns and doubts and hearing them work through them like how you do is pretty validating too -- makes you feel like you're not going down the wrong path when we so often worry we are.

Another awesome video, thanks Francis. I can totally see Ringo's influence in your work! He's one of my favs as well man, Mike was a fantastic artist. I really love your current style man, such a great blend of rendering and graphic shapes. Like Bruce Lee says, “Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own.”

"How do you improve your art by drawing less and achieving more?"
The answer is by "drawing more". Not in a counter intuitive way from a minimalism point of view. What I meant was "learning more".
You said that your approach on minimalism has its hit and miss. It means that you learn more to draw less by drawing more.... I guess... Haha...
Anyway, your covers from your run on Detective Comics were insanely beautiful!
My wife and I share the same passion in art, albeit having different approach and style. When we were still dating back when I showed her your Detective Comics covers and interiors and it blew her mind! Especially for a character so dark like Batman. She was the one who introduced me to minimalism concepts and focal points in a composition. So, to see your graphically, simple almost retro-like, colorful covers on a Bat-title comic really pushed her gleeful eager excitement.
Seeing something different and a unique approach so contrast from the usual is so refreshing. Something that I also commented on Dustin Nguyen's watercolor artworks whenever I see those kinds of approach is: "Delicious" and I don't know why that word always pops in mind whenever I see your artwork.

I grew up with George Perez, the master of details and large numbers of characters. But more recently years, I also appreciate more stylized or minimal style, especially the shadows - like Frank Miller 's Sin City and others.
But as an artist, I think it is important to be able to do both.
By the way, those Superman torsos are great. Let the viewers fill in the details...😊😊😊

Yeah I grew up during the 90's boom and was was massive fan of very intricate art work but have been fascinated with the art of reduction. Just feels like so much self control and restraint has be applied which I sometimes don't have lol
