This is a very deep topic! I'm a new aspiring artist! and I've always had this conflict of wanting my freedom To be able to create my own work and series. But at a risk not having a stable income and being able to at least make a living doing my own work at this time of my life. I've always battled working for a studio. Not because I completely reject it. But because of the fact, I don't wanna stay bound to something forever if I CANNOT create what I truly desire to make!
It's definitely a decision to make. I think if you're in a position to work for a corporation to start your career, it's a great opportunity to continue to expand your skills while making an income. But it's not one size fits all you'll find what fits you as you traverse this field
These are great! Yeah, I took the route of Marvel and DC. Had no choice. I was a single father of four. Now, at 55 years of age, that is not an issue and I have to say that having drawn Batman, X-Men Forever, Marvel Adventures Hulk and tons more, I got to travel a lot. I think that it would have taken a nice royalty check....Like, really nice, for me to have done the big jump. The residuals make a difference. Still working at the board and glad to be doing so. Just doing it Europe now. Cheers
Traveling was definitely a surprise perk of the job to which I'm eternally grateful for specially since I was expecting to never leave the art table LOL! It was definitely a leap of faith to have left dc when I did having such a young family. Luckily as you said, the residuals from my past work do still come, and we were fortunate enough to retain 100% of the rights for this book as well as get our big 2 page rates which helped soften the landing from the leap we took. I definitely enjoy working on the iconic characters and still dip my toes here and there these days.
@@FrancisManapulArt Even working for the Big Two is very scary. I was a paid Fire Fighter of 16 years while doing comics for part of that. Some it was JLA, New Warriors...etc. It was so very hard to make to jump out of the dependable job to the passion of storytelling but a Hurricane disaster made it easier for me to call up DC Comics and put in my notice at the department. I had just made Captain so they thought I was nuts. Regreted it a few times since but overall, very happy. My next big jump was moving to Europe six years ago. On rates, yes...Getting the old DC Comics rate most times and it is good to do, for sure. Sometimes it is less but only if I really want the project do I take those. Either way, busy at the board is good.
Love the video and I'm excited to read Clear! Can't wait to see how much the comics industry innovates in the next few years with projects like this leading a new charge for indies.
You really motivated me to publish my own book one day. I’m still learning to draw, but I hope to start professional in a year. Do you have tips on how to start self publishing? (I mean, after you got the artwork fixed) love your videos man! You’re a very inspiring artist!
Sweet, just bought it and can't wait to read it!! Great video idea. I personally went the Indy route and worked for about 5 years barely getting by before I was making a good living. I get the majority of my money from a company that publishes and promotes my comics but I still own the content. They are still my boss in that they dictate how much work I have to do and give me deadlines. Once you get things rolling Indie is such a dream but it's terrifying and extremely difficult when just starting out in the industry. Honestly, I've been waiting to see Manapul do some Indie content, I'm excited to read this issue. Good luck man!!
Great video and SUPER insightful! This topic has actually been on my mind for the past 2 years, ever since I completed my studies in Illustration & Design. It's a very interesting subject to consider and research, and having your take is very awesome. So thank you! I'm currently trying to break into the industry, and if all goes well, I could only hope for a fraction of your success. Best of luck for you and the rest of the team! Dream big and always be creative!
Looking forward to the series. Wonderful video with some great insight into the decision-making process. From an art process, I was trying to figure out how you were doing the perspective work. Program, settings, etc. :) Can't wait to hear and see more. Cheers!
Have always enjoyed your videos and your work, while Australia doesn’t have access to the unlimited subscription I’ll be sure to purchase the single issue and give it a read this weekend, congrats and all success to you and the team on Clear.
Enjoyed this video. Was great insight that I think a lot of people needed to hear, myself included. I always called myself a sold-out graphic designer because I worked corporate, but a big factor that played into my decision was stability. I’m now looking to try peel back away from that to try fill that creative cup again. Anyway thoroughly enjoyed the video and the multi-format vlog stuff. Hope to see more and will definitely check out Clear soon! :)
Yeah man, I never understood the negative connotation of selling out. Even within the corporate structure true talent can find ways to infuse themselves even into the most corporate of jobs.
Awesome! Glad to see you back on here. I've been really struggling with art as career. I got screwed out of my first gig and was burned hard. Excited to hear your thoughts on the difference between corporate and indie
From my perspective absolutely. That said it will be tougher in the indy route rather than the mainstream route. Both have its pros and cons. I've made what I think is a good living from this for over 20 years and have a family of four. So yes it's definitely possible.
I would recommend building a social presence with your art and wait for them to come to you. My best advice would to to create your own thing and put it out there. That way you're generating your own work and has the added benefit of being discover by a publisher.
It's definitely shaky these days, but at the time of making my decision to move into creator owned work I had a very steady contract so I was just sharing things from my experience at that time.

The production on this video: Amazing! I was so engaged, it even had some drama with the kid feeling bad :l
So inspiring!
Hey thanks so much!
Awesomeness sir. And congratulations on the creator owned book
I thought you abandoned this channel . Glad your back.
Not quite! Hoping to produce more, editing just takes me forever.
Love the video and I'm excited to read Clear! Can't wait to see how much the comics industry innovates in the next few years with projects like this leading a new charge for indies.
Thanks, Kyle! I think the plains are wide open for creators to pursue their passion. Great vids by the way! Really enjoyed your most recent vlog!
Clear looks amazing. Can't wait for the release!!! Amazing video as always

Great video. Comics will go through interesting paths over the next years, looking forward to see your work!
Yeah the ground feels very unsettled, but I suppose it's perfect to plant new seeds and see what grows!
batman will soon be public domain. you bet it is

Best of luck to you as well! The industry is like a prison break with infinitely more break in points than ever before.
This is such a great video! Congrats on the book and definitely subscribed 🤗
Thanks so much!

Thanks! Yeah I'm using this plugin called LazyNezumi. I'll try to do a quick run through of that in future videos.

I hear you man, same in Canada. Although I keep hearing if you have the kindle app and an amazon prime membership you could get it.
@@FrancisManapulArt so in Australia I’ve been able to download it for free on the Kindle App, will be giving it a read tonight, looking forward to it!
Great video

Thanks man, and sorry to hear this. I think it's a great time to make a go at it for yourself. Best of luck, Hunter!
I loved this book, have to ask is there another one coming out... Ouuu BTS of the comic world from the creators perspective.
Hey thanks! Yeah actually if you check out my Work in Progress playlist you can see more bts stuff.
Wish I found these video earlier.
Very insightful and inspiring.
Thanks! Better late than never I hope.
@@FrancisManapulArt Yeah, great looking work too. Thanks again and have a good holiday.
its been a while! for me independent hands down
It has! And agreed!
I love these videos
Thanks so much!
Great video of n the topic. Do you think currently it is possible to be a comic artist while financially supporting your family?
From my perspective absolutely. That said it will be tougher in the indy route rather than the mainstream route. Both have its pros and cons. I've made what I think is a good living from this for over 20 years and have a family of four. So yes it's definitely possible.
very good
Thanks!
What if you don't have publishers to show your work? Is there publishers online?
I would recommend building a social presence with your art and wait for them to come to you. My best advice would to to create your own thing and put it out there. That way you're generating your own work and has the added benefit of being discover by a publisher.
♥️💯‼️✌️🇵🇭
corporations aren't stable hahaha HAAHAHAHAA
