TFT Connectivity Issues and Run-Through on the R1250GS Adventure - Solved?

Many people seen to have issues with connectivity between the BMW TFT screen, the BMW Navigator 6, their Helmet and Phone. Here I try and pick my way through the issues and give you a clear view of connections that I find successful. I also outline some issues I've learned from the dealer that exist today (October 2020). My equipment and versions:
TFT software: 022_005_041
iPhone 11 Pro running iOS v14.01
Sena SRL headset: V1.9.0
Nav 6: Software v5.80 (Bluetooth firmware 3.0.11 P32)

I found this video just this week (in March 2024), and shared it with a friend in Tennessee. He paired his SENA 50S, iPhone, Nav VI GPS and the TFT on his 1250 GSA today, then went for a 180-mile ride in the mountains. He navigated a route on his Nav VI, and ran the BMW Motorrad Connected app, to record his ride, and display speed limits on the TFT. He said everything worked flawlessly, and also eveything paired back up with no issues, after a gas stop, and a lunch stop. THANK YOU NICK! You'ce onbiously cracked the code! I plan to do the same with my devices, right after I pick up my new 1250 GS next week.

Hi Nick. I struggled with this exact issue and the BMW dealer couldn’t fix it - they said it’s one or the other. I found your video today , did the steps and problem solved. Clear, easy to follow and I didn’t even know my Sena 10s has 2 phone Bluetooth channels. One issue I had, was the TFT froze after I changed the Navi Settings (when connected to the bike) and I had to reset the whole TFT back to factory setting then start again. After that it worked fine. Great job, and many thanks.

Once again, great video! Workers perfectly. One more helpful hint, if not already covered, is I allow the tft, phone and NAV to pair, then I turn on helmet. Things all seem to connect properly in that order.
Hi Brent. I’m not sure the order matters although you may be right. I think it’s more that the BT connection is about the last system booted. Often 30 seconds after ignition and many don’t wait presuming it won’t but thanks for the comment and glad it works 👍🏻
I’ve watched this several times now! Just changed my phone and had to watch it again. I would never of worked out he issues I was having without it. I agree with you that with the amount of money we spend it should be straight forward!!
Hi Kenny. I get some “it’s a motorcycle, ride it” comments but what could be so good is flaky. There is a new version of the app (last week) and the TFT software on mine is due an update so I’m ever hopeful 🤣👍🏻

I do have a problem. Hope you can help. I’ve got the Sena slr2 and previous to following your advice I was able to get my hey Siri by holding the button on the side of the helmet. I know can’t. Any advice if possible. Cheers
Hi Richard. It’s because you should have no connection from the headset to the phone. If you have that you’ll likely lose the connection to the TFT. Try it but I suspect that’s what will happen. It does with the SRL
Quick update. Glad I’ve found your channel. Lots of interesting subjects. I’ve just ended up with iPhone to slr2. Loved using the joy stick but being able to ask for song choice on Spotify and asking to directions on Waze outdid the BMW technology of the wheel etc. but big thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with your GS connectivity.
I love the look of the GS but just too many problems with it especially with it costing $31,000 in Canada.
Glad I bought a new 2019 Super Tenere ES for $16,500.
I use a TomTom 400 GPS and an IPhone 7Plus for music and run everything thru my SENA 20S and it works perfectly all the time.
The Tenere doesn’t have all the electronics like the other bikes , but what it does have, works perfectly.

Must try a Tenere. The Africa Twin is gaining traction here it seems but I saw a BMW, Yamaha, Triumph, Honda test a year or so ago and the BMW romped all but cost and the Yamaha seemed to drop into 2nd in most categories. It’s probably not as big an issue as us ‘prima Donna’s’ make out but your right. It should work all the time at that price. Many do what you do and use the Nav as everything and that seems to work better but you then lose handlebar control. Ride safe and often 👍🏻

Glad it working for you Jim. The system is still not fool proof, particularly on some iPhones, but the theory of the connections to make in the video have proven sound
Wish I’d watched this when you first posted it Nick.. as I thought it was just me! 🤣 my iPhone kept unpairing and dropping out (have a 2020 r1250gsa). Only a month ago (May 2022) I asked the dealer to update all of my
Software and firmware. It turn out it had never had any updates.. and this (though as you say it took about 6 hours just for the updates), it seems to have fixed all of my issues. Though, it still seems slow IMHO to lock onto the iPhone and my headset. Sometimes a few minutes. But at least I’m not pairing them every other time! J
Hi John. Part of the issue was the unreliable connecting so they seem to have moved it to the end of the TFT boot queue. Does seem more reliable there but as you say can take a good minute 👍🏻.
Hi Nick, thanks for the very well explained video I have a 1250GSA from 2021 and the sena SF4 and it worked, I was struggling with GPS and TFT.
Now it makes sense to use both.

Nicely done video. I followed your steps and got things working. I use N-com B 902 R on a Nolan 100-5 helmet. It’s based on same Sena technology as the SRL/SRL2 technology. I have a neotec 2 helmet as well with the SRL2. I’m not a big fan of Sena and these modules are based on their S20 which is an older model but it gets the work done.

Hi Nick, you Sir are a Legend. Why are there so many conflicting routes to full Bluetooth Connectivity out there & unfortunately I have followed a few that providential connectivity only to be let down a few miles down the road when either the music stops or we get no further voice navigation commands. My Son just gave up a long time ago on his 2020 1250 GS & now using his bike as a daily commute just connects his Sena to his phone for uninterrupted music on demand & I was sticking to my guns to find a solution. Followed your sequence to the letter this afternoon & all appears to be connecting straight away. The issues I was facing was Music would stop after 20 or 30 seconds or 5 mins other times my Sena would be shown as Pillion & have to discard the connection & reconnect as rider. I honestly have had for the past 2 years the most expensive paperweight the Garmin V1 but now I can also use this along with my TFT. Thank you very much for your time & effort.
Hope it works for you David. There are still issues with certain combinations of iPhone, headset, TFT software version (generally Android is good) but the theory holds. One issue to be extremely sure of it there is no helmet connection direct to the phone. It seems sometimes that ‘steals’ the connection while riding if that makes sense? Another thing is also if you have Sena the default name is Sena SRL 1.2 or similar and although they have unique Bluetooth IDs it helps when connecting rider/passenger helmets in the TFT. To do this TEMPORARILY pair the helmet and phone. Open the Sena app and go to intercom pairings in the app. There you’ll see a pencil by your ‘headset name’ (eg Sena SRL 1.2). Click that and edit the name. (No special characters). Mine is Nicks Shoei. Note: no apostrophe or it won’t save. Now delete the headset/phone pairing and the helmet pairings from the TFT and re-pair the helmet and TFT and this time it’ll have your new name and better to identify 👍🏻

Thanks John. It’s still not the most reliable tech and they’ll be better when they incorporate ‘full’ Nav in the TFT (as the 2021 RT) and ditch the external Nav which complicates it but this works (mostly) for me 👍🏻
Excellent video Nick, I use the same method for my 1250 RT, a little bit tricky because I have the radio on the bike and a Bluetooth dong specially to pair music from Spotify to the radio. the only difference is that I start from the bike and then to the Garmin VI. Appreciated the “trick” of disconnecting the “media” on the Garmin VI. Sometimes my system also gets confused so, turning that off might help. Another thing I always do, otherwise thing will go crazy and I wont be able to answer phone calls, despite I see them coming, is to always connect the helmet first (mine is SLR2) then the bike. This is easy to follow .. going to try it. Noticed the BMW app has now been updated ! Then just have to fix the Sena SRL2 issues with crappy speakers .. can5 listen to music over 50mph💩
Andrew. I think your issue there is the volume. My speakers are fine so long as you’re one click off full. 1st. Connect everything, start your music (this is important as otherwise this next step turns up the ringer). Turn the volume to full on your phone. This is actually turning up the BT channel volume. Now turn it up full on SRL until it starts bleeping. Then back one press to stop it distorting. That works for me up to the speed limit (at least 😉). Unfortunately you also need to get someone to call you on phone and when answered turn volume up to Max that channel also. Both these settings will persist at least until you use another BT device (eg home speaker) to listen to your music 👍🏻

Devices that communicate with each other, and sort out the connection hierarchy directly
We pay enough , and they sell enough, for them to be better than currently.

Thanks for a great video. I have repeatedly reset the connections only for the music to drop out after 10 or 15 minutes and the phone is unreliable. I hope this works but nonetheless I’m grateful for your assistance.

@@hartley383 I’ll almost guarantee that particular connection drops (not phone or media) if you have a version of iOS passed 13.1

One issue: I’m having trouble changing music choices. That is, once I start playing an album, I can’t change the music choice via tft. I have to change the music using the phone, which defeats the purpose.

Patrick. Is this on Apple or android? If it’s on android no you can’t, if it’s on Apple you can but only with Apple Music. I use Spotify and just play a playlist for my motorcycle in random. That works great and if a track appears you don’t want (somehow grandma got run over by a reindeer got in mine) you can skip the track using the wheel 👍🏻

Hi Mark. It’s frustrating for sure. It’s still far from plug and play. I’m hoping future iterations of the GS may start to improve it as it is likely they will at that point take out the extra complication of the Nav6, by building full functionality between app and TFT like the new RT (although that too seems to have some issues but hope that is V1 type issues)
@@nickhodgeUK what order do you power everything up, when i turned on sena first, everything would connect except rider helmet on TFT. bike and nav first seemed to be ok.
@@markjones3361 hi mark. I generally make sure helmet is on before triggering ignition. There are lots of posts with certain sequences but I’ve not found any better or more reliable than others frankly

I need a tutorial like what you have just done as having trouble with the Nav 6 / phone / helmet connection on a 1250 2019 GS.
The Sena is a 10U made for an Aria helmet. Everything worked fine until I added the Nav 6 and paired to my Android phone.

@@nickhodgeUK Bandwidth. BMW right from the start made it clear, Its an either or. Use the smartlink to connect Nav to Mobile device for traffic and Weather radar, but Do not connect headset to Nav. The only benefit is annoying navigation prompts. There may be software in the future to enable this connection, but as it stands its dont. Also, BMW Motorrad have moved away from a stand alone Nav unit and incorporated this into the TFT.
Bin the Nav Connection, All will be well.

I just use my iPhone 7 for the connectivity to TFT through app bmw connect and to listen Spotify in my cardo Packtalk..my setup is iPhone connect TFT and cardo to my phone....for some reason navigation app was losing connection to TFT, than TFT just went frozen...the connection would go back if i restart bike and phone...very annoying...it happened a few times...yesterday i did reset TFT to factory default (default was never modified before)...than i did reset all iPhone bluetooth connections...i went for a 640 km ride and everything worked great! Woohoo...back in business none issues!

Hi nick. Great explanation. I am quite new in this motorbike business and came across BMW1259GS with SC1A Sena intercom inside Schuberth C4 Pronhel by met. I cannot make Intercom function when pairing Dena and TFT, even having iPhone just paired to TFT (not to Sena). It seems TFT is blocking any externa communication coming into my Sena, except TFT playing music from my iPhone. Even FM radio. Is blocked by TFT. I would appreciate some help with this. Thanks in advance!
Manuel. Can I be clear. The connection to the TFT and helmet I demonstrate only handles Media and phone calls via your phone. The radio (if provided by your headset) will not work at all via the TFT and the rider to rider intercom should work but that uses a different channel and setup on the headset
Nick, great instructional video. Many thanks!! One question: if I don't connect the Sena to my phone, does that mean that all Sena functions (linking Group Mesh, etc) needs to be done via the jog command and buttons? They're a pain and more 1980's tech... Thanks!
Hi Tom. You can connect, set up the mesh and then disconnect the phone but likelihood is you’ll notice the TFT will disconnect. My Sena doesn’t have mesh (it’s radio I think) and all mates have same so we just click the middle button on one headset and we’re back connected 👍🏻

TFT firmware ver. 022_007_020 with iPhone iOS 14.7.1... Nav VI (Garmin) and Schuberth C4 Pro helmet with builtin SC1A (Sena) both updated firmware 31 Jul '21. Had all the described intermittent connectivity including immediately after updating firmware on iPhone, Nav and Sena however, the following morning, today, did a 200 km ride retaining connectivity the whole time and still connecting and staying connected now on a couple of short rides after turning off TFT / bike and restarting again... I'm feeling very optimistic, though not sure why it's working now vs. when I first did the updates yesterday. Regardless, operating the TFT 022_007_020 with latest updates available today from Sena, Garmin and iPhone appear to have resolved issue, which I'm fairly certain was attributed to iOS firmware. Wish me luck going forward... I have a 8,000 km road trip planned in US in September and I'm counting on TFT Nav operating vs. having to use Nav VI.

I have paid a subscription to Garmin for French dangerous roads , but they don’t come up on my Sat Nav. We are currently in France and my friend has Garmin Zumo XT and his shows all the “ dangerous roads “ and he hasn’t even subscribed to this. It’s part of his deal.

I’d struggle to know I’m afraid. Do you have the Garmin smartlink app installed on your phone and logged into your Garmin account. Then on the nav ensure you have ticked smartlink as a connection. I do fear that it may not work as the Nav 6 is Garmin but heavily customised to the BMW. You could try Garmin support too. They’re usually pretty helpful
Hello, i have same intercom srl2 and when the Navigator BMW VI tells me commands where to go, but it interrupts and almost disconnects me from the other rider I have it all correctly connected is this normal?, is there a way for it to not interrupt and just play at the same time? Thank you for your answer.
Hi Roman. Yes that is normal I’m afraid. All these things have a priority order so phone is at the top and will overrule all, then GPS and then media and lastly intercom (which is generally using radio or wireless). There are settings in the SRL that adjust the sensitivity at which intercom is interrupted but in theory the Nav will always interrupt. It shouldn’t disconnect you though but sometimes takes a while (1-2 seconds) to return. The other rider(s) should get a beep to warn you have another connection
Thanks for your help but I managed to resolve problem with disconnecting intercom during Sat nav commands. The issue can be solved by. In sena menu, press 3x button + (paring GPS). GPS can't be parried as mobile phone first or second. If it is parried as GPS then you can hear intercom all the time without disconnecting. Intercom will be disconnect only when using phone for phone calls.
Just in case someone experienced same issue.

Hi Nick. Bruce in Wagga Wagga Australia. just watch this UA-cam on the TF Connectivity issues etc. Although it is now May in 2022 I think it is still very relevant to me. I have a 2019 R1250GS. iPhone 12 and a BMW Navigator GPS (Garmin) I have the BMW Motorrad Connected App on my phone and it has not recorded any trips for over a year. At the bottom of that screen on the App it says There is “no devices connected”. I also have a Shoei Neotech and the same Senna headset integrated as you which I have not used due to similar issues.
I am going to uninstall all connections and follow you instructions and see if this sorts it out.
Hi Bruce. The ‘no device connected’ in the app is not related. That’s a new things for the BMW connected cradle which you can use with your phone rather than the BMW Nav 6. Hope you get stuff sorted though 👍🏻
Hello Nick and thank you for another good video. I’m not trying to grovel, but the thing I like about your videos are the great depth you go into, explaining absolutely every detail for idiots like me who require that. So who better for me to cheekily ask your views on the bmw sat nav 6, which I am assuming you have? I have just got a r1250gs, and although I bought it without the sat nav, I am now contemplating getting one, the only thing is, reading the reviews, it seems there is quite a split as to whether they are worth it or not. So, if you don’t mind taking requests, could we have your views please? I fully understand if you deny me, I won’t unsubscribe! 😊
No problem. I find it frustrating and even more so at £600!!! Here are the pros:
1) Telemetry from the motorcycle. I use this mostly as it gives accurate speed, range, consumption, altitude (surprising how many times that’s been an interesting stat!) compass direction. That sometimes is good confirmation that you have a correct direction
2) Pre-planning routes and sharing prior to trips
3) live traffic cameras, speed limits and traffic delays - particularly in unfamiliar routes
Negatives
1) not simple to operate. Often you can plan a route and it takes you the weirdest way (that may be because it has so many settings the algorithm is too complicated)
2) often just goes haywire (I’m not alone in this. Almost like someone is tapping the screen)
3) not as smooth an integration as you would hope for a BMW branded item
Years ago, the fact it allowed stored media and phone calls was probably ground breaking but now the TFT looks after that fairly well and better without the Nav 6. I’m trying to use the TFT Nav which I think has great potential but it keeps disconnecting. I’m hoping November sees this fixed????? The only downside is currently no live traffic or cameras.
I would suggest this. Buy a cradle to clip your phone in the Nav fitting (just the cheap ones £25/£30) and use Google maps for a while. You can pair your helmet directly to the phone (I advise against this if using the Nav) to hear Google. If you’re happy with that, happy days. If you then want to try a Nav 6. Wait until you have a decent trip and then borrow one from another rider or the dealer. It’s a £600 purchase they should have one. I’d be happy to lend mine. I’m encouraged that they are looking to build all this in (see the 2021 RT) and do away with the separate Nav 6. Read into that what you will 👍🏻 Ride safe

I was thinking exactly as you have suggested, the cradle that clips into the nav fitting, I’ll order one today and see how I get on. It’s a good suggestion to see if I could borrow one when going on a longish trip, and I really appreciate the offer of trying yours.

Hi Nick. I own a 1250gs hp, and I'm having problem with connectivity with my phone and helmet(sena30k). When I receive a phone call, there is a phone and helmet displayed on the TFT, inmediately the little phone display becomes blue, what is the meaning of that color change? By the way, the phone sound start s skipping, sound is no longer clear. Your comments please. Thanks.

Eduard. It goes blue when you answer the call. The skipping is likely more a signal issue than connection. Just be sure all is updated. Firmware on Sena, Software on phone, TFT and connected app. Rumour has it a TFT update is due to resolve issues in the February/March timeframe (now)
thanks a lot for this video. as i'm buying a BMW GSA 1250, i'm hesitating between the BMW helmet + BMW communication system versus NeoTech 2 with Sena SRL2.
BMW seller told me that i couldnt use the BMW GS Wheel to navigate to my phone contact to perform phone call if i had a neotech2 + Sena.
Is it something you are facing ? looks like you dont have this kind issue

Hi Hugo. The only benefit with the BMW helmet is the wheel operates the volume. It still works to pause, change tracks, answer phone, etc. They are saying that the proprietary part of their Bluetooth protocol that handles that will be released to major manufacturers but we’ve not seen it yet 👍🏻
Hi Nick just found this. How are you getting on with the connectivity on your K1600. I'm trying to connect my Packtalk Slim to my TFT whilst having my Garmin Zumo also connected but it doesn't want to pair? Any suggestions?
The 1600 (and 1250) are a treat in comparison. Connects fine more than 90% of the time and not known it drop on a call. The mapview on the TFT makes such a difference. Surprised they’ve not fitted it on the new 1300 GSs 👍🏻
Many thanks Nick. We got serious problems on Cardo side too. I belive noone figured best practise of using Cardo Packtalk - iOS and R1250gs. Altough there is no Nav6, music keeps like stopping and continuing. If i dont connect Cardo to Tft, then there is no problem but this time i loose lots of features. Do you know the “connection rule set” here? If so please kindly share it…
Ahmet. I suspect it is that you have your phone connected to cardo too. You cannot do that and even if you have the connection disconnected, it can connect automatically. If that’s not it make sure the firmware/software of the Cardo is updated and then delete all pairings and reset the TFT and start again. The music should be fine. It’s the navigation that generally disconnects. Good luck

I’m having trouble when I connect a bike to bike intercom. My phone, helmet etc seems to all work ok until I have the Sat Nav 5 in the loop. It will connect then disconnect and just generally play silly buggers for 15 mins and the settles down and seems to work for the bike to bike. However sometimes not all features are available on the TFT, and the wonder wheel won’t access the Sat Nav when bike to bike is active. Any suggestions, thoughts, advice??? Thanks in advance.
Andrew it’s tough to know as the intercom should use a totally different channel. Couple of important things. Make sure everything is fully patched. Never connect a phone directly to the headset (as that generally kills the TFT connection) and then delete all connections (headset, phone, Nav and TFT). Reset the TFT and reconnect everything 👍🏻
I own a 2021 BMW R1250GS Adventure. I keep seeing a notice on the TFT that it can’t read my keyless fob which is in the carrying tray on the bike. I have changed batteries, stored in other locations when not ridding carried in different pockets, disconnected my Smart can 2.0 . Do you have any experience with this problem?
The only time a get that is in my tank bag. I have also had the ‘battery level low but not affecting functionality’ error but nothing major. Sound like either key or receiver may be dickie. I’d show dealer and ask them to investigate

Trying for the last few years with 2 RT,s and two GSA,s to try and pair the ,Sat Nav, TFT, Phone and Schuberth C3 pro with the Sena system and could never get it done right and have looked at numerous videos here and no joy until I looked at your and thank you so much and working like a mouse's heart beat and perfect and thank you so much. Would it be okay to post you video on the BMW, site that I am a member of on facebook ect ?.

Hi Michael. No worries, post away but thanks for asking. Bear in mind the system is still a bit flaky but you have accurate theory to get it working again when it decides it doesn’t like you anymore. Ride safe 👍🏻
Hi Nick, thank you so much for you informative and helpful video. I struggle and struggled with this issue and basically just gave up. I have a Sena 20S Evo so adapting some of your instructions was a bit taxing but having now done so it all just works. Hi, this is all very complicated. I don't understand the technology like so I hope you can help me. I have 1200 Gs woth tft. Really like the connectivity features of the Tft. I have the Cardo freecom 2 paired with my mate. The cardo has two channels, I basically tried to use the second channel to pair woth the bike. Basically if I have the bike connected to my phone and the bike connected to my hemet, I have connection issues with talking to my friend. It worked at first but kept dropping out and we couldn't communicate. When we got out of range or I'm on my own it all works fine. I did at first just use channel 1 but same thing. Please help. The only work around is to use the freecom 2 only and have nothing connected to the bike which is disappointing.
I sense that’s an issue with the Freecom 2 in that it can’t ‘shared’ it’s Bluetooth channel and channel 1 probably takes priority over channel 2. I’m afraid I only know the connections on Sena but maybe ask Freecom for a technical explanation 👍🏻

I have Nav V, Sena helmet, Android phone, Spotify, Valentine Radar, R1200 GS. I pair phone to helmet, phone to Nav V with Smart Link, Radar to helmet. Works perfectly for everything I need. I dread the thought of trying to pair the TFT screen or the new app if I get the 2021 GS.
It’s much better Joe although the Connected app for Nav on the TFT with an iPhone is still poor 🥲
I gave up with the crappy Bluetooth connectivity. I don’t have the GPS rather I use my iPhone for that. Having a direct connection to my phone only means I can use Siri and just ask for everything. Directions, call people, play something on Spotify etc. What do I miss out on, not a lot. The bmw connected app but who cares. I cant see my lean angles in a recorded ride and I can’t see speed limits as you said in your video but I can use Waze and that shows that perfect too. Do yourself a favour and don’t bother with any of the bmw connection or connected app rubbish and just enjoy your riding while being fully connected.
For sure that’s one way although having stuff available on the whizzy wheel is nice. I do still enjoy my rides though 🤣👍🏻
Hi Nick ! Congrats for the video, it helped me a lot to do the settings on my 2018 R1200GS. I also want to ask you something related to TFT. Do you have any ideea why on my TFT the NAV menu is not active and I am told to check connection when I try to select it. The phone is connected during this procedure and if I push and hold the menu button upwards, it will work on my Navigator VI. With the hope that you may have a solution for my problem, I thank you for your video and wish you a good night ! ... this is an edit ! ... I couldn't stay still,... ;o), and I have founded the problem,... I did not configured the BMW Motorrad app. Once again, thank you and wish you all the best !
Marcel. It’s tough to know but iPhones have an issue of dropping the connection to the connected app (which is needed for the TFT navigation function). If this is not the case try resetting the TFT in settings and re-pair everything 👍🏻
Hi Nick. I also have everything set up as you decribed with a Nav V and TFT. However, whilst Nav instructions are loud (via the Nav V), phone calls and music or virtually inaudible. Have you come across this? Thanks
Hi Mark. Yes. You MUST turn up the volume on the phone while LISTENING to music or TAKING a call (or else all you do is turn up the ringer). Each part of the connection has its own volume. I start my music before a ride. Turn up the volume and store phone. It normally remembers the setting 👍🏻
Does the SRL have GPS only pairing (after the 2nd Phone pairing on my 30K)? If so, that might be better for pairing to the NAV VI so you get barge-in-audio from the NAV VI no matter what's going on...
Hi Marc it does but I never managed to get that working as well as Mobile 2. It also has ‘media’ and ‘remote control’ pairing 👍🏻
i have spent hours trying to get this to work. BMW should be punished for not publishing the definitive paper on this. Thank you for explaining that the various connection types in the helmet are simply different protocols. are they explained anywhere? The way i set it up the map shows on the tft and the navigator is ignored, as i recall. Im exhausted. I spent three months in europe on a yamaha tenere. 17k km. just my iphone and google maps. the individual phone sims were a nightmare but the google maps can download locally and google maps is pretty good although planning trips is not its forte and mymaps is a bloody nightmare. The Tenere gave me not a seconds worth of troiuble Often i was alone an miles away from anyone and more than once i wondered what would happen if i lost my phone or the bike conked out but even though i often lost cell service because of idiotic warring phone companies, the downloaded maps kept me going. i love motorcycles. Just bought this 2018 GS Adventure after a lady from Illinois listened to her GPS which told her to make a uturn in the middle of the intersection i was crossing. Lost my 1980 R100S. I feel like i bought a huge jet. it is so smooth and so fast. I hope it is reiiable. 'My R100S had two coils, a condenser and a set of points and there wasnt any thing i could not do and did not have to all that often.
All perfectly true Robert. The issue I find with Google maps is it’s fine for town to town but if you want a certain route along certain roads it lacks a bit but for sure none of the BMW solutions are good frankly 👍🏻
I have just bought 1250GS and waiting for delivery. I have Shoei Neotec 2 helmet with Sena SRL 2 and IPhone 12. Almost everything are the same 🤗 I am very happy and love this video. Solving connection problems between motorcycle, helmet, iPhone is really a big f...ng challenge. Luckily we have Nick 🙏❤️
Alim. I’m currently testing an android device and get ZERO disconnects from the TFT to Connected app for navigation so this is absolutely an Apple iPhone issue

Andy. May be a bit of a trawl. But check the recent comments. I vaguely remember an issue with that headset and someone gave an answer to it
It can be a little aggravating when you get more information from customers experiences then you can the actual dealers that sell these. I just bought the 22 R18 bagger…. From a Harley dealership that are now starting to sell BMWs 😊 so getting anyone that has any knowledge on how these bikes are set up and operated is an adventure on its own. I haven’t really messed too much with the TFI display besides setting the app up on my phone ,but I was wondering on the headset in my helmet if it could be linked considering it is the Cardo brand? but I agree having a second phone to set up and use it as a designated operation source would be a good choice, besides my max pro will not fit in the compartment they have on the bagger. I know the bikes are still new and have a lot of bugs to work out but I’m patient! So great video and information. Thanks
Hi Donnie. It’s frustrating the issues that are there however you may find the R18 will be fine. For sure I don’t hear much from S1000XR riders for example. The Nav 6 does not help for sure. The system will only work if you pair a headset and the cardo will be fine. Good luck 👍🏻

Two Sena 3s Intercoms for rider to pillion. Communication is on all the time which I like but every time a Direction comes from Tom Tom it plays a ringing notification, but cuts off the beginning of the direction info. 🤦🤯 any help appreciated.
That’s more an issue with the headset and contention with the sat Nav. Tough to know every combination but expect you have a setting in the Sena for intercom sensitivity which you can lower so the Nav instruction ‘channel’ opens quicker and with less volume (more sensitive) 👍🏻
3 years later and we still have the same problem. My Cardo Packtalk Edge, iPhone 15 and the TFT on my BMW F900XR connect but we lose voice commands on the Cardo and media payback. So for now I only connect the phone to the Cardo and all the Cardo features work fine. The only things I miss on the TFT is the speed limit right next to my current speed on the TFT and the voice recorder on the Cardo app
Does the cardo have mobile phone 1 and 2. Try connecting mobile phone 1 to the TFT and 2 for you helmet 👍🏻

Just watched your video on connectivity i gave up trying long ago but may try again my iPhone is currently using 14.4 so I hope it works at all. You must have more patience than I have and a dealer who cares. By the way I also have the Shoei neotec with built-in Sena works great with the phone and tomtom hates BMW tft.
Give it a whirl Paul. It shouldn’t be this tough but gradually I think it’s moving forward and as the RT will HAVE to work as it has no other SatNav integration other than the TFT we just hope any fixes are applied retrospectively 👍🏻
Hi Nick, great video and was interested to see the issues BMW owners are having with connectivity.
I own a Triumph Rally Pro and people are also saying they are having connectivity issues, whereas I didn't and I know its all in the way everything is connected and in the correct order.
I have to say it seems very convoluted the way any of these things connect.
What I found best was to remove all pairings from helmet to phone (I use Android) and then pair phone to TFT then pair helmet to TFT and it has worked flawlessly.
I'm surprised BMW don't have it so that the Nav pairs to the TFT along with the phone and helmet, if it did I feel these issues would be resolved. Just seems too compilcated.
Also hate to say but the common theme is that most problems are with iPhone. Especially the camera failing due to vibrations when mounted to the bike, more specific, iPhone 11.
I can’t argue with any comments there. Certainly I travelled recently with a new Rocket 3 owner and he’d live my issues (we called his ambient temperature guage a random number generator). It’s frustrating but I find when you get a ‘way’ that works it’s at least manageable. For sure Apple are a big negative contributor 👍🏻
Would help if at the end you "typed" something out like
GPS to Sena > phone 2 turn off media.
GPS to Phone > Media and phone calls off.
TFT to phone > pair and sync contacts.
Sena to TFT pair phone 1 >
That is if I got that right and that is the way you do it ?

Hi Nick I have followed your instructions and everything is connected and working. However, with telephone calls I can hear the caller but they can’t hear me … any ideas what the issue might be?
Not sure Matt. Normally the other way. Be sure you do a trial call and while on the call turn the volume up. The other things you can try are to look at the headset settings and whether it’s ‘opening the mic’ for example. If all else fails reset the TFT. Delete all the Laing’s on the phone and lid and start again. Good luck 👍🏻
Hi Nick I share the same woes and it think when you pay 20k for a bike it’s very disappointing that it down so just connect straight up, however I have got the same setup and can get everything to work but when I answer the phone with the wiz wheel I get no audio and the caller can’t hear me it’s frustrating
In a way I’m glad I’m not alone 🤣 some thankfully too seem to be ok. There’s a new iOS version 14.6 going to try this weekend after resetting everything again 👍🏻
.......yes it is still flaky with my iPhone, no matter what channel you use. (GPS or Phone2) Anyway, I hope BMW will adapt the new 10.5inch display asap to other models like our outstanding GS.
I hope they also fix the issues they have with that too as apparently that’s not all ‘sweetness and light’ 👍🏻
I don't use the Nav - I have my phone connected to the TFT and my helmet connected to the TFT - which seems to work - but it means that I lose connection to my phone when I switch off the bike - would it make sense to link my phone to the helmet via a second connection? seems that would create issues - so I guess bike off you have to use your phone normally? This is a pain for me as I have my phone mounted where the Nav goes via one of those adapters.
Yes. If you connect the phone to the helmet you will lose the TFT connection
Hi, I did everything according to the instructions. i hear nothing when i answer or dial a calls. Sena 50s and Samsung S21Ultra. pls hlp.
I expect the volume needs setting but you can only do that when on a call so get set up and before you leave get someone to call. Once the call is connected turn the volume up full on the phone. It should remember it and you can then control volume on Sena 👍🏻
Hi Nick, great video, thanks! Just a quick fix I found, if you start the bike but NOT start the engine, and you wait until everything is paired, everything will more times.

Hi Joao. I agree I just worry with all my lights and stuff when it’s cold with 30-40 seconds to pairing the battery may struggle to start if I’ve not ridden her a while. Probably unnecessary on my part. I love the fact you spotted the automation. That’s viewing in detail to see that pop up on my phone 😂😂👍🏻 ride safe

Hi Aaron. That’ll separate from this system (unless you phone her!). You both need to connect headsets. On the Sena that’s BOTH of you press the centre button in your headsets at the same time until you hear “intercom pairing” (about 5 seconds). Once you both hear the beeps from your headset, one of you single-press the middle button and wait. You should then be connected 👍🏻
Dear Mr Hodge, extremely useful for me as I encountered the same issues as you, Connected App spotty, sketchy connections with Nav6 and TFT (and as I happen to have the same helmet in the same colour...). I will certainly try out your configuration. I also want to echoe what another follower posted on another very helpful video on these connectivity issues "WheelSpin Produktions", out of my head I cannot tell you as whether you came up with the same solution, yours in any case seems very plausible. @@nickhodgeUK Hello again, in the meantime I have been able to try out your set-up and I can confirm that it worked. I had the Nav6 prompts on my headset but could still get telephone calls and -very important to me- control the volume with the wonderwheel on the handlebars if I had the setting on "TFT" while I could zoom in and out on the Nav6 if I put the setting on "NAV" (I mean the Menu button you operate with the left hand thumb). Audio for the prompts was crappy but I think it is always like that, never mind the set-up. Kind regards Carlos

Hi Juan. Helmet to Helmet is easy if they’re Sena. Press and hold the centre button in both helmets until it says ‘Intercom Pairing’. When both helmets are bleeping, press the centre button on ONE helmet and wait. Then they’ll join. If they are different manufacturers helmets you’ll need to use another method but it’ll work for Sena to Sena (most models) 👍🏻
hello nick watched your video and just bought the latest sena 50s which used your instructions but just wanted to no why didnt you use the gps connection for the satnav instead of mobile connection just wondered

No reason particularly John although the 2nd mobile phone is ‘richer’ in features and higher up the priority order so would ‘dim’ the GPS channel when operative 👍🏻

I find it strange the there is no other name for the BMW color dash than TFT. Why don't we call tires rubber or the motor aluminum?

Hi Nick. Thanks for an excellent tutorial making everything simple. Having recently changed my bike to a 2018 1200 GSA Rallye with TFT, a BMW Nav 5 and replaced my helmet to a Shoei Neotec 2, I thought a Sena SRL2 would compliment the whole set up and make the most of all I now had. After hours of pairing and unpairing, crossed wires and functionality dropping out I found your page and the light began to appear in the distance. I’ve watched this video about three times to fully get to grips with the tech but I feel I’m there now although I still need to road test as it stands at the moment. One thing that is different from your video is the SRL2 I have does have a Nav Connect function within the connectivity menu so; phone pairing, second phone pairing and Nav pairing. I was wondering whether it would be ok to pair the phone to the spare phone channel on the SRL2, even though you say not to as It’s probably not needed or, can this be used to pair a GoPro? Rich.
Hi Rich. The original SRL also has the nav channel. It’s just a slimmed down Bluetooth protocol. You can try pairing but I think all my caveats still apply. You may want to find a friendly dealer who would update the software on the TFT too but with a six year old bike you may be out of luck 👍🏻

Hi Nick, I have a 2019 1250GSA HP, and I've had awful problems getting the TFT dash to remember that it's been paired to my phone, so not quite the issues you have, mine will forget that it's been paired to anything and BMW cannot seem to fix it. I have however been told about another software update newer than yours (I'm on the same version as you) that specifically targets bluetooth connectivity and specifically iPhones. Just thought I'd mention it. Apparently there's a new "PUMA" notice on the system for the issue, they've asked me not to give out the PUMA number publicly but happy to pass it on.
I gave detail of that toward the end of the video (I don’t blame you for baling). That may help loss of connection from start and hopefully crackly calls. There is also issue with the connected app after iOS 13.3 which I hope is addressed soon as I’d like to use that Nav instead of the Nav 6 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK I'm currently on a Teams work call so haven't had a chance to watch the video yet Nick, I have had quite extensive interaction with BMW Connected Ride in Germany about my issues, like I say I haven't had your issue as mine is a little more fundamental but thought I'd mention as this new update is allegedly very iPhone specific although they didn't give me specifics but apparently its a further update beyond the TFT version we both have.. Will watch the video in full shortly :)
Hi Nick thank for the video, I have followed it to the letter, updated, restarted But my GSA and Packtalk Bold are so intermittent, music skips and fast forwards, sometime no map prompts then all of a sudden she goes nutz in my ear telling me directions from miles away from where I have travelled from until it catches up to where I am ??? I have a Nav6, Iphone 12, all the updates are complete and BMW have updated the TFT etc, the other thing is you cannot sometimes use the wheel to start music playing it has to be done from the phone... I am at a total dead end now !!! Just been on a 10 day trip and it was sooooo frustrating, BUT the bike its self is just so good its just the connectivity issue Thanks great vids
Hi Andy. That’s not an unusual experience I’m afraid. Here’s what I do. Delete all pairings. Reset TFT via settings. Factory reset the headset and re-pair everything, starting phone to TFT. Headset to TFT. Now try that without connecting to Nav. I’m finding it important to have phone accessible to TFT (breast pocket). If all that works then connect the Nav (disconnecting the phone and media channels). There is a 14.6 for iPhone and an update for the app too last week. Good luck👍🏻

Any idea why the audio quality between my Nav VI and my Schuberth Helm (with SC 1 Advanced) is very poor?
It sounds like sent through a Coke can 😀. Music is okay. Not great but way better compared to the N6-Commands.
Not much use but if your only using the nav6 for turn commands perhaps try a GPS channel on the headset. Presuming the TFT is paired to mobile phone and there are two channels?

Hi Nick. I’ve just had my software updated and now find that after following your above guidance, I now have to routinely reconnect the SRL via the TFT. It also jumps to the ‘passenger helmet’ when connecting.
I use channel 1 on my SRL when connecting. Any idea how to prevent constant reconnecting?

I can suggest a few things. Reset the TFT. That’s via the settings menu. It just reboots the TFT. It will clear all the pairings and possibly reset some of the ‘units’ which you can change back (eg pressure maybe reset to bar where you may want psi). Then factory reset both SRLs. At this point be sure the SRL firmware is at current version. Now I would connect the SRLs one at a time to the Sena app. In here, and in here alone you can edit the default name which is normally SRL and the firmware version number. Change that to Bruce or whatever. This will allow the system to see them as different SRLs (they should be doing this with MAC no, but in case). IMPORTANT: once you have renamed the SRLs delete all pairings with the Sena app on the phone. Now do the pairing as instructed and that may fix it?? I no longer have my GSA so it’s tough to know if this will work but I’d find it staggering if they’ve introduced more issues. Good luck 🤞🏻

Another couple of question if I may - I've followed your connections and it all works except my Navigation on the TFT is still greyed out? I'm not running the BMW Connect app if that makes a difference? Also is there a way of still running the phone/contacts through the NAV as the contacts control via the TFT is a bit basic (I think)? Thank you.
You have to run the connected app to enable Nav on the TFT. The TFT has no maps/routing in it. That is supplied by the app (and for me the bit that disconnects most) 👍🏻

I have an 2018 gsa with tft...been unable to effectively use it because I would have to go back to the videos to double check I set it up right. I don't think I'm the only one...I have the SRL as well. Perhaps you could do a video on how to simply link up with the Cardo Packtalk bold.....most Cardo owners press a button they are connected....Thanks again
Hi kevin. It should be easier for sure and issues still exist today. It’s not really the headset that is the issue it’s the contention between connections particularly with the iPhone. The only key is not to connect the phone to the headset. Connect phone and headset to TFT and use it as a hub 👍🏻

i saw in an american video that first the navi 6 has to be linked with the helmet and then the tft screen.
It is also recommended to use the mobile phone link 1 and 2.
I’ve never found the order particularly matters. I agree on mobile 1 and 2 although if you don’t have that you should use mobile 1 to the TFT and either GPS or Media connections to Nav6 👍🏻

If I connect helmet (Cardo black edition), to tft and nav 6 it drops one of the connections usually the first one it established. The Cardo I have has mobile 1 connection and also a GPS connection so I am using two separate channels as you have. Totally at a loss and so frustrating. Let me know if you have any ideas. I will be checking all the firmware tomorrow but I can’t imagine that would be the issue.
Does your Cardo have a mobile phone 2 setting??? I think you’ll find that the GPS setting is ‘stealing’ the mobile phone 1 channel and disconnecting the TFT. When you’re connected the way you have it, go into the BT settings in the Nav6 and untick the headset connection. Try the media/phone check boxes first and if that doesn’t work then the checkbox to disconnect the complete connection. If that switches on the TFT that’s your issue. I now have no connection to the Nav as all it gives is audible turn commands and violent dings every time there’s a speed camera from the Smart Link app. More trouble than it’s worth to me but switching off some settings in there and/or using phone 2 should fix it 👍🏻

I see that this was mostly about connecting the sena brand, but having the Cardo Bold now, will I follow the same directions? There are 538 comments or I would read back to see if this has been asked. 2nd..my display shows “not possible “ when attempting to connect helmet #2. Even before it knows what I am connecting. Weird. I will start and follow your directions and see what happens. I had it all screwed up. Great video! As always
Hi Robert. I know it’s a huge set of comments as I try to answer them all 🤣. The theory should hold. I would however start by resetting the TFT and deleting all pairings and then start from scratch. That should clear up the Passenger helmet with the TFT 👍🏻
@@nickhodgeUK even the bmw dealer here in Daytona said he has never seen that message before. Definitely will clear all! Bike, gps, helmet and phone. Hope to be able use these Cardo units soon. They are too sensitive to sound, wind, etc.. the Victory magnum we just moved out of was a definite no-go. Again, thank you!! I am a fan!
