  • Many people responded to the video where I almost lost my Phantom 4 to the rising sea, that I had to give throttle to speed it up.
    I expected that in Sports Mode RTH would also be faster. So I have to test it to see what's fastest.
    It turns out they were right! And that means I could have battled the head wind a lot better and would probably have made it if I had speeded up.
    That video is here: • My €1500 quadcopter ru...
    CONCLUSIONS
    * strangly enough RTH goes at the same speed either in P- or S-mode.
    * You CAN speed RTH up by giving 'throttle'.
    * With a head wind, it is important to go as fast as possible since the wind speed slows the drone down and that uses battery power of course.

    If you want to do a useful test then you should travel a few kilometres in each mode and see how much battery is used up. That will show you the most efficient way to return home in an emergency. It's all about battery consumption not speed.

    • @NeverMindYourOwn
      @NeverMindYourOwn  7 років тому

      Yes, but in the situation I mentioned I had to battle a strong head wind. In that case speed DOES matter.

    • @CodFatherPart1
      @CodFatherPart1 7 років тому +3

      More speed would have used more power. Would that have got you home? Only a battery consumption test between the flight modes would find that out. Great videos by the way. Please keep it up :)

    • @NeverMindYourOwn
      @NeverMindYourOwn  7 років тому +2

      With a head wind speed DOES matter. Imagine a head wind of 10 m/s. If it flies in P-mode at 10 m/s it will just hover. If it flies 15 m/s in S-mode, it will come home at 5 m/s.

    • @CodFatherPart1
      @CodFatherPart1 7 років тому +3

      Flying faster than the headwind goes without saying. In the case you are talking about you needed more speed but that would not necessarily mean you would have made it home or in fact much further at all as you would have used up the battery faster. How fast would only be calculated by a battery consumption test in various modes to find the best method back (RTH with stick forward or sport mode). I believe sport mode would be better as the positioning system would not be used (drawing power) but I think it would be negligible. I'll leave it there as I feel I am banging my head against a brick wall.

      BUT, does the RTH feature make it fly at 10m/s? If so, head/tail wind would make no difference as the P4 would fly at 10m/s regardless; if the software makes it RTH at 10m/s. Therefore, if it encounters a 10m/s headwind, would the P4 increase throttle/pitch to give this? I'm not sure you're correct assuming a 10m/s headwind will make it hover in RTH. The P4 uses ground speed/GPS reference and not a pitot tube for airspeed.

    Man, the most exciting drone video I have seen was the mission you landed on your house after flying 8 km !!
    The guy that described it as the Apollo mission during landing made the perfect comment.
    At some previous video you said that can accept suggestions for videos, so, my suggestion is that you do some similar vídeo , but this time with some intermediate landing somewhere, take off and then the next landing at the final spot. Would be something for thousands and thousands of views. :-)

    I wouldn't be so sure you would still get back...you may be flying quicker but you would also be consuming more power from the battery. Then the Phantom may tell you "Landing" sooner than flying slower whether you like it or not, still short of the home. I wonder if you test battery consumption over distance at the different speeds. Slower may end up giving you more distance.

    • @CarlosAustin
      @CarlosAustin 7 років тому

      I agree...the more aggressive flying would burn the battery up faster. You simply went out of the range of the battery to get home. Hope your DSLR survived the fall. Looks like the tripod not heavy enough to hold it up with the wind you had there.

    • @NeverMindYourOwn
      @NeverMindYourOwn  7 років тому +5

      Imagine flying at 10 m/s with a head wind of 10 m/s. It would just hoover. Imagine flying in sports mode at 20 m/s with a head wind of 10 m/s it would fly home at 10 m/s. So YES: flying faster for sure would have made a big difference and at that distance would have brought me home safe.

    • @oakilydokely
      @oakilydokely 7 років тому +7

      The test was in the scenario of getting back quicker and making the distance on limited battery power. You didn't make it on "Auto Home" and it did travel against the wind at whatever speed it was going at. The P4 has the intelligence it needs to move to get back by increasing its power automatically. So it wasn't hovering. If you sped up it would use more power to cover distance quicker but for how long/distance at the faster speed? That would be the test. 5 metres short over water would be a disaster.

      Hi Brett & NMYO ;¬)
      I have a battery modded Inspire 1 and can confirm that the DJI software does take it's speed into account when returning home at low power and so by increasing the speed, AT THE TIME of the warning would not work most likely as it is calculating when to warn you based on complex algorithms which would take into account self-regulating speed... the only possible 'benefit' might be if you thought it was going to fail over water, by boosting speed, although bad for draining the batteries critically (and maybe even damaging/killing them) you might just get a small distance boost due to overcoming the wind speed by a higher ratio - the interesting bit (although I suspect the clever folks at DJI do include it in the algorithms) is whether flying at a lower ratio drone speed:wind speed has a bearing on distance/mw travel..... I imagine some complex calculations are needed lol

    • @oakilydokely
      @oakilydokely 7 років тому +1

      Paul Strawford thx for your info. I thought there would be some DJI power management involved with the Return To Home function. However against the wind is unprecedented and increasing speed to power consumption to get back safely is still the big question. The test that was undertaken here is not conclusive imo.

    Nog een goeie tip voor als je met tegenwind boven water vliegt en je moet zo snel mogelijk terug is om je hoogte aan te passen, in de vorige video bleef je ook op dezelfde hoogte vliegen met als gevolg dat je veel meer wind vangt, als je lager vliegt heb je in 99% van de gevallen beduidend minder wind en dan kost het je drone ook niet zoveel moeite om de terugreis te halen.
    Tweede tip voor als je boven water vliegt of een langeafstandsvlucht doet de volgende keer is dat je maar beter alles 3x nakijkt en dus 100% zeker bent wat betreft je drone en je controller dat alles werkt naar behoren voordat je begint te vliegen en dat je het ook nog even hebt getest op locatie voor nog wat extra zekerheid en ook dat je voorbereid bent op eventuele doemscenario's die zich kunnen voordoen, in ieder geval zou je op zijn minst een plan B moeten hebben klaarliggen voor het geval dat het nodig is.
    Je moet weten dat boven open water vliegen je niet veel opties geeft voor het geval dat er eens iets mis gaat om dan nog je drone te redden, persoonlijk denk ik dat boven water vliegen met een peperdure drone je moet vermijden zoveel mogelijk juist omdat het een te groot risico met zich mee brengt omdat het simpelweg einde oefening voor je kan betekenen, tenminste ik denk niet dat de meesten mensen zich een €1500 foutje kunnen veroorloven, toch?
    Typisch geval van niet nadenken over wat allemaal invloed heeft op de drone, waarschuwingssignalen negeren, het niet goed instellen van de return to home functie voordat je begint met vliegen en rekening houden met alle variabelen die je op locatie zou kunnen verwachten.

    Thanks for your video-so was a conclusion made as to which mode of Operation will get you further distance (as opposed to faster as I'd say longer distance is more important than speed when trying to get back home) in a low battery situation? Slower in rth mode (non sport speed) assuming using less power or faster in sport mode (or rth with sport mode full speed) assuming using more power? Common sense would say flying slower in rth mode would still get you further since the battery will last longer.. how does the dji auto rth option work or calculate when to kick in otherwise and does it know about which direction the wind is in and make it's calculations based on whether flying into wind or downwind? Thank you

    Have you ever wondered why windmills are so tall ?
    It´s because the wind is weaker at ground level.
    I just thought that information would be usefull, when flying home against the wind on a dying battery.
    Another thing: Flying fast = less time in the air and that might be important too, as it uses power to just stay in the air.

    It seems to me, the best strategy would be to turn off all the unnecessary sensor functions, go to a low but safe altitude, then accelerate for home. Think of it this way... if you fly forward at the same speed as the wind is pushing you back, you burn battery power and get nowhere. Going slowly against a headwind isn't really saving you battery power.

    10 m/s(23mph) vs 15 m/s(35mph) vs 22 m/s(51mph).
    The fastest speed uses 150% current, but for 40% of the time(1.5 x 0.4 = 0.6) saving 40% power.

    The basic aviation thought here goes as follows. If you are hovering, you're using power but getting nowhere. If you have a tailwind, you're getting free distance - so reduce power and go much further.
    Let's say, then, that you have a 10 Kt headwind and you fly 10 kts (airspeed) into the headwind. You'll stay absolutely still but consume fuel. (battery power).
    So, 20 kts (airspeed) will give you 10 kts ground speed.
    30 kts (airspeed) will give you 20 kts ground speed.
    As you can plainly see, higher speed is worth the "burn".
    Unfortunately we don't have airspeed sensors on these drones. With such someone could quickly build tables and determine the power curve of the device and from that drawing a tangent on the graph to the curve will yield the best speed in any head or tailwind for max distance. Max endurance would be the bottom of the power curve.
    If the wind is perfectly still, then one could get those curves with a lot of time and patience (and re-testing and independent verification). Also need confidence in the battery percentages (how "true" are they).
    Otherwise plan flight into the wind so you have a lower power return option if the batt gets low.

    The next question this prompts is.... if you advance the throttle to return home faster, that obviously uses more power and drains the battery faster...so, is the DJI speed of 10m/s actually the optimal speed for maximizing battery power? I think you need to fly somewhere that's like 20% of the battery away, then return to home and see how much battery that uses with and without throttle assist. Note that the battery gauge may be slightly non-linear at the top end so best to do around the same state of charge (say 70% to 50%) each time. I would do the test myself, but the weather here in the UK is not good right now for this kind of test :-(

    • @NeverMindYourOwn
      @NeverMindYourOwn  7 років тому

      Yes good question indeed. I did a test like that on Tenerife, but never published the video. Roughly it takes the same amount of battery per km. But because it is very sensitive in Sports-mode and one easily makes too large tweaks/turns, I think P-mode is more reliable/straightforward. But... it also depends on whether there's a lot of wind and whether that's head or tail wind.

    • @Richster64
      @Richster64 7 років тому

      Interesting. I guess, under ideal conditions (no wind at all) there is a 'sweet spot' where a certain amount of throttle will get back in the quickest time. Drag increases as the square of the speed, and that applies not only to the drone, but to the props too, so the faster the drone/props, the drag increases as a square of the speed, defeating the object of going faster. At the other end, travelling very slowly, the power required to keep the drone 'up' far outweighs the drag, so there must be a sweet spot, or ideal speed. Maybe 10m/s is it for the P4 in ideal conditions.

    • @Richster64
      @Richster64 7 років тому +1

      I should say before other people jump in.... that 'drag increases with the square of the speed' applies to 'turbulent flow'. For very aerodynamic objects, it's more directly proportional. Because drones create a highly turbulent flow through their props, the square ratio is more appropriate even though the P4 is pretty aerodynamic.

    • @Richster64
      @Richster64 7 років тому +1

      D'oh! And of course a better way to test the speed v's battery power easily is to set the P4 into a big Orbit around a POI, time how long it takes to use (say) 10% battery at a given speed, then simply increase the speed for the next 10% and faster still for the next 10%. Because it circles, the wind speed and direction largely gets cancelled out making it a better test. Now to wait for the rain to stop...

    faster is not usually more efficient more resistance for motor blades more drag on drone body, true you would have covered the ground quicker but the battery consumption would have been higher so I think at best you would have got to same point but probably in reality not as far. same principle as driving a car, 56mph gets you much further on 1 gallon of petrol than driving at 120mph does, just not as much fun. great videos btw keep it up

  • @FlyingMerf
    @FlyingMerf 7 років тому +1

    Interesting. Just a small correction in your terminology though. You were changing the pitch, not the throttle. The pilot can't control the throttle (power) on a Phantom. The pilot can only control the rate of altitude change (left stick) or the pitch angle (right stick) on a Phantom. On a conventional quadcopter you would increase both the throttle (left stick) and the pitch angle (right stick) at the same time to go faster.

    In the video where you almost lost the drone, you returned at almost 70m altitude if I recall correctly. Most likely there will be much more wind in that altitude, so if I had been in your situation, I would have disabled Return to Home as soon as I started realising/doubting if it would make it back, lowered it to a much lower altitude and hope I would have better headway (you were over the sea anyways, so 5-10 meters would be plenty altitude).
    You spent a lot of time wondering and reacted late, in these kinds of situations, it's important to quickly identify any plan b and c and since you were not over land, the most obvious is to reduce the wind if possible, and lowering or changing altitudes could help with that. You could keep flying manually while trying different altitudes, but most likely around 5-10 meters would be much much less wind.

    In order to get the best range out of a charged battery I recommend using the app "FPV Camera" (iOS). This app shows realtime power consumption (per time unit) while adjusting speed and course. This enables one to adjust the speed and realtime watch the corresponding flying time. Watch this video in which I am doing a risky range test over water without landing options using FPV Camera:

      When you have to battle a strong head wind it is best to fly as fast as possible. Image you fly 10 m/s and the wind is 10 m/s... then you would just hover. Better to fly asap.

    Energy comes with a price. If you run out of battery power you are caught between a rock and hard place, I.E The faster you want to go the faster you drain your battery. Think of it if it is a car, more speed more petrol required. And that does not work linear. So Increasing throttle makes no difference. You would still have lost it. You also have to take the drag factor in consideration.

    Am I right in thinking that speed is related to pitch so does sports mode actually use more power? Is it not more efficient to fly fast and get the benefit of the props in the air like wings? Can you do side by side in sports and gps mode over 2-3 km? That would be a really useful test. If the props don't actually spin faster but pitch more? Is it really more power hungry to get double speed?

    • @NeverMindYourOwn
      @NeverMindYourOwn  7 років тому

      I've done such a test once on Tenerife, but didn't publish the video. The battery usage per km is similar in P- and S-mode. But it was not a very accurate test.

      I didn't have trouble with the drone on the airplane. I was sent away from El Teide since it was not allowed to film there, which at that time I didn't know. The best info I found later is here: www.icarusrpa.info/mapa.php?opt=all

    • @NeverMindYourOwn

      Exactly. And my issue was that if I RTH in Sports-mode it would go faster than when in P-mode. It turns out it is the same speed. Which is kinda strange.

    From memory you ran out of battery power. The test really should be, which mode uses less power for the speed. what is the most efficiient speed to get home?...thanks

    • @NeverMindYourOwn
      @NeverMindYourOwn  7 років тому +2

      I think that doesn't differ very much. But the whole issue in that running-out-of power-video was the head wind. Because it had to overcome the head wind, it is best and most economical to fly as fast as possible. Let's say the wind is 5 m/s and in P-mode it flies 10 m/s and in S-mode 15 m/s. Effectively this is in P-mode 5 m/s and in S-mode 10 m/s. If normally it consumes the same amount of battery per km in both modes and it could fly 1 km per 10%... with the wind in P mode it would fly 0,5 km per 10% and in S-mode 0,67 km. Because in P-mode the wind consumes 50% of the power/km and in S-mode only 33%.
      That's why I most likely would have made it when I had speeded up.

    • @JeffMeden
      @JeffMeden 7 років тому

      Drag increases geometrically with speed, not linearly, so faster is not always more efficient. Same reason cars lose fuel efficiency quickly as speed goes up. Drag coefficient per unit speed increases 4x. Of course the "sweet spot" for a phantom drone might be at a different point on the curve vs a car so you might still be right that the fastest you can push it is the most efficient.

  • @TheDocweddle

    Yes, full throttle is faster....duh....BUT it uses your battery reserve MUCH faster. It does not take much genius to figure out that you would have still not have gotten back to land no matter what mode or speed you were flying in. The conclusions reached by this pilot (he says, "lessons learned") are false.

    If youy want to get back at speeds above the wind yiou have to race the copter faster ATTI mode, SPORT and disable return to home in menus and yes you will need throttle up to achieve max into wind speed. But if you read the manual you should know this. Nobody learns lessons like this by flying over water- you always learn over land and get good there. You flew into wind at 9m/s in return to home mode... its no wonder you nearly lost the copter. I hope now you finally understand. Whicjh is why i would delete you video where you nearly losty you copter because you should have done this kind of test FIRST! That sand looked potentially dangerous to walk on so why play games over such a bad place to lose your copter again.

    • @Sabre2493
      @Sabre2493 7 років тому

      Hi Matthew,
      Whilst I agree with you somewhat (defo about learning over land) - I believe that the video should stay as that is part of this channel and may well prevent someone else making the same mistakes....I don't think this is being shared with us for us just to bash the channel operator (I'm embarrassed to to not know whether he has shared his first name??) - It is about a community learning and enjoying the footage - he has often asked if anyone knows better about things and also he had tested over land prior to that if I remember correctly (although hardly the point).
      I personally read manuals and watch the tutorial videos and have still made mistakes - some of which were down to events taking place in real time and causing a kind of 'panic mode' - I went from a top model P3 to the Inspire 1 and with the massive increase in speed comes increased stopping/maneuvering distances which although I know makes sense on paper, caught me off-guard when flying.... luckily a crash into a very leafy tree only cost me a gimbal ribbon cable and some new rubber mounts for the gimbal frame.

      I suppose the difference then is some of us prefer to learn in little steps safely and some out there like to be gregarious pillocks who want to seek negative attention for doing it the wrong way whilst appearing to be "asking for help". Is that it?
      I just dont get it. What is it. Penis size? You must test your drone by sending it out over water to the maximum distance possible and nearly losing it for an adrenalin rush. To get views on youtube. What is the point. The footage of some stupid boat - like any other boat. You can film hundreds of boats in a harbour or marina but no, lets film a dirty ugly boat miles off shore and risk the drone in doing it. What is actually the point. Some stunning hillside sure... some pictureesque beach, but boring sea... flat... grey.... and some shitty boat. Really. What are we saying here folks... "I have no eye for a decent picture and I like to risk my drone". Is this really what its all about. Then being ambarrssed by paying 100 euros ransom money to be made to look like a fool. And then putting the video of looking like a poor artist with no keen eye for a nice shot and no drone skills and a sucker who pays ransom money to recover his drone... actually putting this video online to embarras yourself. Sure. yeah... whatever floats your ugly boat, I suppose ;-) hehe.
